[Q]Backup Carrier ROM - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Peeps;
Ok so you used to be able to use the Kies Patcher to spoof the firmware and reinstall carrier roms to the i9000.
I want to flash a few roms maybe darky's or one of romkitchen. However it would be great to know how to do a backup of my rom currently installed. Or a source to download a Three UK i90000 Froyo Rom (H3G)? Or how to compile my own now we all have to use Kies 2.0.
Any and all help would be great
Cheers

[Q] Is there point in updating

Hello,
I have a Galaxy S and I was just wondering, is there much point updating to a custom ROM as it's on the latest firmware from OTA (2.2) & if so what's the best custom rom available at the moment?
cheers,
Kevin.
Hi...
Im new in the SGS rooting too, but I guess my answer goes for any brand of mobile, when regarding to running a custom ROM.
With a custom ROM you get a "cleaner" ROM. you can choose which one suites you best, and often, the ROM is deoxed e.g. and is running much smother, than any stock ROM.
Regarding my choice, Im going for Darky's ROM.
I often look at which ROM people use the most, but also, if its build on stoc ROM og stock android ROM. If it is stock android ROM and you are planning on using a custom UI (ADW launcher e.g.) hte phone wont take up place with Touch Wiz UI
okay, so I've decided to use Darky's ROM - but on the tutorial it says to install Recovery2e (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108) I downloaded it and extracted it but it's a zImage file as opposed to a .tar file

Questions about Bootloaders, Kernels and Modems

I am new to Galaxy S but have had experience with roms, kernels and radios from a G1.
I started with Samsung 2.2 firmware and rooted it using Cyanogenmod wiki page and flashed the latest MIUI. I know kernels change speed and include Voodoo colours and sound for Galaxy S. I also now radios can change signal and gps accuracy.
1)Are modems the same as radios and if so where do I find a list of them?
2)What is the best bootloader and why does the Gingerbread one not have sd cards work? Also what else doesn't work?
3)How can I check which radio I have and if I flash any bootloaders how do I check that?
Radio, Modem and Baseband are all the same thing. You can check which one you have by going to Settings >About Phone and checking the Baseband Version.
A new modem is easy to flash as a zip file from Recovery and you can find lots of them by searching in the Dev forum, however make sure you flash a modem that is for CM7 since you have Miui installed. For guidence you can search for Modem in the Miui or CM7 thread in the Dev forum.
As for bootloader, there is no way to check which you have, but as you installed Miui directly over 2.2 you should have the froyo bootloaders. CM7 and Miui were designed for froyo bootloaders. Some people say that GB bootloaders have better battery life but if you have GB bootloaders with CM7 you can't access you external SD card and other things may not work properly. I would suggest staying with froyo loaders for now and seeing how it goes.

I have read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9579987&postcount=11945
but I don't know if it still JPP is the best radio as this was back in December. For people in the UK what would be the best overall radio?
can anyone answer me which is the best CM7 modem for ORANGE ROMANIA? tks
Try jvp or jpy, I'm on orange uk, insanity cm and they both work fine for me don't forget you need cm7 modem, there are 2 threads in dev for this

About bootloaders
I have a SGS GT-I9000, and following
directions from ROM kitchen, I installed a Froyo 2.2.1 version.
It's I9000XXJPY with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22 kernel
and it says Rom kitchen v11.1-ZSJPK.
I wanted to install a Gingerbread version from ROM kitchen as well, but it says I have to make sure I have at least JVH bootloaders. Ummm, do I ? And what to do so i could install a gingerbread to my SGS ?
I installed a 2.2.1 froyo also from ROM kitchen I9000XXJVO with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22, build number XWJSD, hoping i'll install newer bootloaders with it.
But, i had problems with messaging so i'm gonna have to revert to previous one.
Do i have proper bootloaders or not and what could happen if i tried to install Gingerbread and don't have proper bootloaders.
Thanks in advance

connecting to samsung kies not working

hey guys... i have a strange problem. im using siyah 2.0 kernel and i cant connect it to samsung kies on my pc.. same thing happened when i installed the cyanmod rom...
im currently using villain rom, and whenever i flash back to cf-root E7.. i can connect to kies.. but when i flash the siyah 2.0.. i cant
how can i make my phone connect to kies with the custom rom and custom kernel that im using?
rom: villainrom 3.0
kernel: siyah 2.0
tks in advance
me too! i'm using MyICS v2.1.8 and cant connect to kies
@flashmz and untamedkid
when you flash unofficial, cooked and AOSP ROMs kies does not recognize them.
IMHO this is not a bad think, Kies is not such a good program, there are more functional and free on the market.
If you want Kies functionality back, you need to reinstall a stock and official rom and maybe install a rooted kernel (such CF-root to keep the rom as stock as possible).

[Q] Clean Install

Hi everybody, i've a question about installation of kernell and roms.
I must flash my phone with Ufficial Samsung Firmware before install new kernel and new rom?
And i have another question (i just used search but i didn't find anything) about differences on XWJW1 JVZ and go on.. which are differences?
Thank u
u dont have to instal an official firmware before instaling a custom kernel or rom. its obvious that if u didnt flashed the phone yet, it has an official rom on it jvs jvz jvt - depends on the location where you bought the phone (i think) i am kinda a new too
Ok thank u, then about jvz jvs jvt i should know the corrispective locations..
I think jvt is the most stable, works really well with latest semaphore kernel, waiting for next stable release, then hopefully ics will be worth a try

[Q] Stable GM ROM? Opinions?

Hello,
I am looking for a stable GM Rom with everything working for a friends Galaxy Mini.
I will not be home for several months so he will not be able to modify smth as she doesn't know how to flash Roms etc.
Thanks in advance.
The Gxy Mini is on Stock 2.1. Anything special i should know before flashing?
I believe you first have to upgrade to Gingerbread before flashing custom roms. Also, install clockworkmod recovery via Odin before flashing custom roms.
That's about it really.
A pretty nice rom that sticks close to default is Chocobread. (Current emanom is too buggy right now, although v6 is in the making).
. Installed Stock 2.3.6 then Creed's Rev. 1.3. Interesting that the contacts didn't sync from 2.1. Then, (didn't checked on PC before) i found out that i have no phone contacts on the Google account although i synced them on the old 2.1 before wipe.
Creeds ROM feels laggy than stock 2.3.6 somtimes. I overclocked it to 710 mHz. Angry Birds Space doesn't load past the "Space birds" loading screen.
I told her to test it for a few days but i consider other options?
mebitek's cm7 rc 1 or kitten's cm7 base on mebitek's deodexed or MORe v3
i would recommend Stock ROM!
