So what is the general consensus? JL2 defaults to 850 while the others seem to require a staged flash to work... So it seems out of the 3 JL2 is the only one "mean" to be used for 850 right?
Anybody here that moved away from JL2 to another modem? what benefit did you get?
I don't see much difference between modems. I found wifi to be buggy with jl2. No issues with any others. I've used jpy and now jq1 and no issues with wifi or anything else. I still get 850 gsm just not 850 wcdma.

3G is a must. There is a way to get JQ1 on 850 WCDMA. Try here

Greetings. Please read my comment in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12297290#post12297290
seems like overly complex when jl2 just works and i am not having any issues with it on 2.2.1 ?
you´re probably right.

Just wondering what you guys think the best modem is for Rogers in Canada when using GT-9000 modems. KP1 had bad GPS, terrible reception and bad call clarity so that one is out. JL3 is good for everything, but calls seem to lag when going out and information takes a bit to start flowing to the phone. I haven't used JK4, but will try it soon.
What have you guys used and what are your experiences?
Hi
I'm also looking for this information. I recently updated to Rogers stock Android 2.2, flashed the speedmod kernel so that I can have the BLN and now when I try to do voice over bluetooth in my car all I get is static. I've done a bunch of reading and this seems to be due to the use of the stock i896 modem with the i9000 based speedmod kernel, correct?
So, in light of this, what modem should I be using on my Canadian Rogers Captivate i896?
Thanks
Jason
I was just about to post a similar question to this until I found this thread googling "KP1 i9000" sweet.
Really itching to flash Fireball 2 but I don't feel like trying all the modems :l
Subscribing......
User LimaI896 has this in his signature:
Samsung I896 Captivate
ROM: Serendipity's 4.0.1
Kernel: Hardcore's SpeedMod K12P
Modem: JL3
Might try flashing his ROM, kernel and modem over the weekend..
I am running Perception 10.2 with the latest Firebird kernel and JK4 modem. I get decent phone and GPS performance with either JK4 or KP1. The only issue I am facing is that when the network switches to 1900 band, I do not get 3G signal.
The phone would be perfect if I can find a way to disable 1900 and just use 850 or 2100.
I'm running my own custom concoction of the Rogers Stock Rom with junk removed, battery mod, Glitterballs' Kernel, and JK4 and couldn't be happier.
I'm considering packaging my ROM and releasing it.
Jk4 is where its at.

Using an i9000 modem and the WCDMA 850 band:
The UGJK3, UGJK4, and TLJL3 modems have rendered the below obsolete. Use one of them and you will have 850 WCDMA enabled by default.
JK4 modem provides the best signal and lowest voltage when unplugged therefore saving on battery. JL3 came in second and was just a tad bit higher in voltage use than the JK4. Both JK4 and JL3 stayed under 4000 while the other modems listed were about that threshold with a weaker signal.
trueish so you have to use an i9000 modem (jk3, jk4, jl2, jl3, jpd, kp1..etc) refering to i9000 roms, which most are using
and in my own testing it solved any issues i was having. although with these phones.. you never know and your phone might just hate whatever modem you put in it until one day it stops acting like a d*** for no apparent reason.

Thanks for the explanation. just flashed jk4, the calls are definately louder and clearer now. data is about the same.
SO.. noob question: JK4 would go well with my 2.2 running Cognition?
this is for damian. thanks
bumping this..
Is JK4 still the best modem for I9000M? thanks in advance
I'm running cognition 3.02 speed mod,and jk4 or kp1 and can't seem get the H signal, is it the rom Im using and is H all that much better than 3g. Thanks

H is basically like 3.5G. The speeds are all relative, and unless you are looking directly at the speeds, It's basically the same when your surfing the web. As for your connection, I haven't run cognition in a while so I don't know about that.

I don't think it is a part of Cog., but is part of Perception. I personally like Phoenix and it has HSPA enabled.

Pheonix wass my first rom. Very very stable rom, I liked it but couldn't get over the unreliable battery. I'm on Ultimate JPY v5.6 right now (speedmod, tweaks, lagfix) and I'm getting about 18 hours with heavy usage.
Ok so if I want the H signal I need to change roms correct, not modems right? Was thinking of flashing perception anyway and using speed mod and jk4 modem. That should get me H?
Also, (for some crazy reason) it's possible when making the ROM to turn off the H and have the 3G only.
Just FYI.

The HSDPA/HSUPA is not actually part of the ROM.
It's the Kernel/Modem that your using. It's only available on the i9000 based setups.
So if the ROM your using is i9000 based it will be enabled by default
Ya that's what I figured but when cog starts up it says i9000, but anyway I'll try perception see if it activates H.Thanks
I just flashed Perception 10.3 a few days ago and i get HSDPA.
3g/h depends on the modem, not the rom. most of the modems already have the h enabled.

But captivate based roms wont ever display H.

Battery consumption drops significantly if you lock the phone to UMTS 3G.

Just like everyone is saying, HSUPA is enabled once you install an I9000 modem.
On stock captivate ROMS (like Cognition), an "H" symbol will not appear, but you still have an HSUPA enabled if an I9000 modem is installed. Only I9000 based ROMs will show an "H".
The best way to check if you have HSUPA enabled on a stock captivate ROM is getting an internet speed test app and checking your upload speed. At my fastest, I get about 500kbps upload speeds with only 3G enabled.
I have an I9000 modem installed, and HSUPA is enabled, as you can tell from my internet speed test results, but my phone still shows "3G" because I use a ROM based on Rogers stock Froyo release.
Wow, good to know. All this time I thought the "H" was sub 3G speeds..
You'll have to excuse me, I'd been using an unlocked G1 on AT&T's network for almost two years; never had 3G until now.
Old
good to know, i am using that rom too. you can try speedmod kernel also, for the modem, it needs to be i9000 compatible.
I have success with both firebird kernal and speedmod kernel with the kp1 modem and the jk4 modem. You could tries these modems and see if they work for you. Not every modem will work the same for every phone in any location. You will just have to keep trying them out until you find one that works for you
well about every modem ive tried. aka or rom. works. just the poor call quality or slow network speeds. i tried speedmod last night. no go on ji6. whats wierd is on cognition or the leaked 2.2 froyo they work perfect on ji6. no matter the kernel. which i tried speed mod. glitterballs .4. so ill go out and find an i9000 kernel.
I am running dill's 6.0 with kp1 modem, 2 days now heavy phone use talking, texting, browsing and downloading. Absolutely no connection issues with kp1 at all so far. No voice quality issues either.

hi everyone. I have a captivate. live in america. Well i have had slow network speeds with jk4 jk3. jl1 jl2 plus poor call quality on the other end. ect. but the stock jh7. and the froyo leaked ji6 modems kick ass where im at. it even relialably plays youtube while on on the edge network.
Ive come down to di11is roms are the fastest. smoothest and the BEST gps. no bugs. has any one tried that modem on those roms? ie 6.0 . well i use that modem on some other roms and i know you need a matching kernel. so i flashed kernel then modem. still boot loops. anyone found a combo that works? is there a voodoo sound/lagfix kernel that works with this rom/modem. on cognition 3.04 i used .v4 gb kernel/ji6. and worked great. just have much love for di11is roms

If you read around, the pattern for modems is location based. It seems some modems work better in areas that other modems bomb out. I am going to take a chance and say you are in Kentucky if I read your user name correctly. It is helpful to others when talking about the modem that works best for you to be a little more specific then "I live in America". America can mean many different countries. (unfortunately in todays world climate it really only means one place)
Sorry just a pet peeve of mine.
For me in central florida jl2 has been the best. I will test ji6 to see how it goes for me. Hopefully it will become a preferred modem.
Again I am not trying to be a troll, sorry if it sounds like it.

I don't understand that at all..... the only real difference is if the area covered is 850/1900 or 1900 only..... otherwise how can there be a difference?

I do not disagree with what you say. But reading around there are very similar findings in specific areas. I will look for the threads in the morning. Nyquil kicking in.
im auctually from indiana. sorry for putting up america. At first this modem stuff didnt make sense. How 5 different modems will have 5 bars but each one has different results. would be nice if it was like a pc. windows or linux or mac. where if the drivers installed they just work. Its just such a deal breaker when i get to work and the net is just slow even with 5 bars. (jl1 jl2. jk3 jk4) but with ji6 it works great. and speed test are wayy higher. am now checking out deviant roms. found i9000 with voodoo and ji6. hmm might be able to get di11is working with ji6 here in a minute!
well tried firebird 2.0. tried few other kernals no luck. i flashed kernal first. then modem. no luck. firebird says works will all modems. ive tried. both 959 vibrant ji6 and ucji6 cappy modem. same result. sends it to boot loop. its something easy. is it because its a i9000 based rom? cog 3.04 it works with all those kernals ive tried on dillis
soo heres my newby question. what exactly is a modem? ive never heard of them until i came to the captivate

not modem, "modem.bin" it is the file that controls the radios. the reason for changing it is either for frequency settings for your location. north america other than t-mobile uses 1900 and 850mhz some countries like austrailia and new zeland use the same. europe uses 900mhz instead of 850 and many of the roms ported to out phone have the european modes. for that reason we use the canadian bell and telus modem.bins for the i9000 roms.
also the captivate modem.bin versions dont have hsupa conectivity and the captivate roms are not compatable with i9000 modems, the bluetooth calling doesn't work in that combination. it is also recomended to match the kernel to the modem but i find that the chinese captivate i9088 modem and the telus t959d modem work better for me than any i9000 modem available.

Hey sorry if I'm posting something that has already been talked about, I know I'm new. After I installed serendipity I have been having really bad reception (I had excellent service everywhere before). I'm with Rogers in Ontario, I've read that my phone may be looking for a faster/more powerful tower, and disregarding a closer slower one? Any way to fix these settings? I would prefer not to reflash haha.
Thanks for any help
Could always try a different modem [Modems] - (Froyo & Gingerbread) - WCDMA 850 enabled
Just found that the JK4 modem works best for me in my area. Anyone in southern Ontario should try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867309
