H is basically like 3.5G. The speeds are all relative, and unless you are looking directly at the speeds, It's basically the same when your surfing the web. As for your connection, I haven't run cognition in a while so I don't know about that.

I don't think it is a part of Cog., but is part of Perception. I personally like Phoenix and it has HSPA enabled.

Pheonix wass my first rom. Very very stable rom, I liked it but couldn't get over the unreliable battery. I'm on Ultimate JPY v5.6 right now (speedmod, tweaks, lagfix) and I'm getting about 18 hours with heavy usage.
Ok so if I want the H signal I need to change roms correct, not modems right? Was thinking of flashing perception anyway and using speed mod and jk4 modem. That should get me H?
Also, (for some crazy reason) it's possible when making the ROM to turn off the H and have the 3G only.
Just FYI.

The HSDPA/HSUPA is not actually part of the ROM.
It's the Kernel/Modem that your using. It's only available on the i9000 based setups.
So if the ROM your using is i9000 based it will be enabled by default
Ya that's what I figured but when cog starts up it says i9000, but anyway I'll try perception see if it activates H.Thanks
I just flashed Perception 10.3 a few days ago and i get HSDPA.
3g/h depends on the modem, not the rom. most of the modems already have the h enabled.

But captivate based roms wont ever display H.

Battery consumption drops significantly if you lock the phone to UMTS 3G.

Just like everyone is saying, HSUPA is enabled once you install an I9000 modem.
On stock captivate ROMS (like Cognition), an "H" symbol will not appear, but you still have an HSUPA enabled if an I9000 modem is installed. Only I9000 based ROMs will show an "H".
The best way to check if you have HSUPA enabled on a stock captivate ROM is getting an internet speed test app and checking your upload speed. At my fastest, I get about 500kbps upload speeds with only 3G enabled.
I have an I9000 modem installed, and HSUPA is enabled, as you can tell from my internet speed test results, but my phone still shows "3G" because I use a ROM based on Rogers stock Froyo release.
Wow, good to know. All this time I thought the "H" was sub 3G speeds..
You'll have to excuse me, I'd been using an unlocked G1 on AT&T's network for almost two years; never had 3G until now.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or because of Cyanogen's Froyo rom, but ever since the 11th, I've had H a lot more often than 3G on my Nexus one.
I noticed H within a couple hours after flashing Cyanogen's RC1 Froyo rom and it's been mostly H with some 3G and E here and there.
Is H faster? I did a speed test* on H and got just under 1Mbit. I don't remember what I got on 3G last time I tested (Months ago).
*I was using the Xtremelabs Speedtest
Edit: I forgot to mention, that I've never seen H before Cyanogen's mod. I've used stock roms all the way up to Froyo before the 11th and only had 3G max.

the stock rom doesn't report H, it continues to show 3G, the only way to determine if one is on H in the stock rom is in the info panel(a ping test will cause it to switch from UMTS to HSDPA)

In speed, is 3G faster than H? I know T-Mobile was rolling out HSPA+ but that was supposed to run 7MBit (I think).

H is faster.

Just wondering what you guys think the best modem is for Rogers in Canada when using GT-9000 modems. KP1 had bad GPS, terrible reception and bad call clarity so that one is out. JL3 is good for everything, but calls seem to lag when going out and information takes a bit to start flowing to the phone. I haven't used JK4, but will try it soon.
What have you guys used and what are your experiences?
Hi
I'm also looking for this information. I recently updated to Rogers stock Android 2.2, flashed the speedmod kernel so that I can have the BLN and now when I try to do voice over bluetooth in my car all I get is static. I've done a bunch of reading and this seems to be due to the use of the stock i896 modem with the i9000 based speedmod kernel, correct?
So, in light of this, what modem should I be using on my Canadian Rogers Captivate i896?
Thanks
Jason
I was just about to post a similar question to this until I found this thread googling "KP1 i9000" sweet.
Really itching to flash Fireball 2 but I don't feel like trying all the modems :l
Subscribing......
User LimaI896 has this in his signature:
Samsung I896 Captivate
ROM: Serendipity's 4.0.1
Kernel: Hardcore's SpeedMod K12P
Modem: JL3
Might try flashing his ROM, kernel and modem over the weekend..
I am running Perception 10.2 with the latest Firebird kernel and JK4 modem. I get decent phone and GPS performance with either JK4 or KP1. The only issue I am facing is that when the network switches to 1900 band, I do not get 3G signal.
The phone would be perfect if I can find a way to disable 1900 and just use 850 or 2100.
I'm running my own custom concoction of the Rogers Stock Rom with junk removed, battery mod, Glitterballs' Kernel, and JK4 and couldn't be happier.
I'm considering packaging my ROM and releasing it.
Jk4 is where its at.

Using an i9000 modem and the WCDMA 850 band:
The UGJK3, UGJK4, and TLJL3 modems have rendered the below obsolete. Use one of them and you will have 850 WCDMA enabled by default.
JK4 modem provides the best signal and lowest voltage when unplugged therefore saving on battery. JL3 came in second and was just a tad bit higher in voltage use than the JK4. Both JK4 and JL3 stayed under 4000 while the other modems listed were about that threshold with a weaker signal.
trueish so you have to use an i9000 modem (jk3, jk4, jl2, jl3, jpd, kp1..etc) refering to i9000 roms, which most are using
and in my own testing it solved any issues i was having. although with these phones.. you never know and your phone might just hate whatever modem you put in it until one day it stops acting like a d*** for no apparent reason.

Thanks for the explanation. just flashed jk4, the calls are definately louder and clearer now. data is about the same.
SO.. noob question: JK4 would go well with my 2.2 running Cognition?
this is for damian. thanks
bumping this..
Is JK4 still the best modem for I9000M? thanks in advance
what is the best Radio for At&t reception and signal strength?

Well sounds like we have an WM user. On Android they are modems and to be honest it is a best one for your area. I use jk4 in Alaska
actually never has a winmo device I have dell streak, first droid device.
but Im asking so I can flash the wife's cappy, she's complaining about signal strength, let me check what rom she has, I believe she has 500mhz speedmod kernel on a i9000 based rom.
I though I saw some HTC droid's , like Evo refer to modem as Radio

oh ok that makes sense. HTC use radios and not modems. just make sure that the rom fits the kernel and modem. it will be trial and error.
Not to be a stickler but doesn't this belong in the q4 -q1 modem thread?

Isn't zel a mod? He seemed alright with it's placement haha
It is like zelendel said it is mostly trial and error for your area but I would give JL2 and JK4 a try they have given me the best results JL2 better signal but JK4 almost the same signal but slightly better battery life for me anyway
I made some changes to build.prop to my Dell Streak on AT&T, based on a thread I found on xda, it seemed to boost my 3g speeds, will build.prop tweaks boost signal reception as well? possibly??
edit: nevermind, didnt find the tweaks in build.prop, or defualt.prop, are they somewhere else? or are they missing from build.prop?
the lines like ro.ril.gprs_class=12, etc.
and ro.ril.hsxpa=3, etc.
Dont forget the 3 new ones, kc1 and the 2 jp9 modems.

I have a quick question, and this may be completely based on the crappy service in my area as I usually get around 2-3 bars. I absolutely LOVE this ROM, but I'm not sure if the problem here is in the ROM or just my service. I have read that non I-9000 ROM modems are generally capped around ~300kb/s upload, however it's showing my phone using HSDPA, so I'm a bit disappointed with the results of my speedtests. My friends have showed me SS's where they have speeds of ~1.5 mbps (with the same signal strength). Is this due to them using different ROMs or modems? Or is it just the bad coverage in my area? I'm grandfathered in the old AT&T unlimited data plan, so I used the phone a lot as a mobile AP so any suggestions how to increase the speed if possible would be greatly appreciated. I realize it won't be as good as a broadband connection, but 300kb/s upload seems a bit ridiculous.
Since I don't have the appropriate number of posts to embed, I'm attaching the screenshot if someone would be so kind as to take a look.
Thank you
Change Your Modem, The Jl3 and Jk4 are my personal favourites.

Fasty 2.5 uses kb1 modem, perhaps it's not good in your area.
If you liked Fasty 2.5, then i am sure you ll love Fasty II v2.0 it uses kh3 modem, try it. It might solve yourarea issue.
Flashing an i9000 rom should get you the higher upload speeds (Mosaic is pretty good). I went from 300 to 1000 upload.
I know the data speed on captivate GB bootloader based rom will always be less than i9000 based roms. I recently switched from apex to pinnacle and I never get H just 3G which has horrible speed.
Can I fix by using i9000 modem? Are they compatible?

No. I try it and data and text work but cant make any call
You need to combine modem with Kernel. To my knowledge no I9000 gb kernel works on i897 rom. Also the speed difference is just upload.

i noticed speed difference in basic internet surfing too. I dont H anywhere now which I used to have everywhere on i9000 roms...
Captivate roms, with the exception of the very latest leaks, don't show H, only 3G.
H= HSPA wich is only a upload speed increase. You can try different I897 modems see if you can increase your bandwith in your area. Personally I get about 3Mbs download and 300Kbs upload.
Edit: My observations are based on ATT network.

So by latest leak you mean KJ3?
sent from my cappy rocking gingerbread
I think it started with ki1, then the next couple had the H+, but the last one didn't. I think it is kj3.
H and 3G usually have about the same dl (HSDPA)speed. The difference is in the upload (HSUPA), which is capped at about 350-375kb/s. The i9000 modems don't have that upload cap built in. The H+ is only cosmetic at this point, until att starts increasing speeds through the towers.
