I have a quick question, and this may be completely based on the crappy service in my area as I usually get around 2-3 bars. I absolutely LOVE this ROM, but I'm not sure if the problem here is in the ROM or just my service. I have read that non I-9000 ROM modems are generally capped around ~300kb/s upload, however it's showing my phone using HSDPA, so I'm a bit disappointed with the results of my speedtests. My friends have showed me SS's where they have speeds of ~1.5 mbps (with the same signal strength). Is this due to them using different ROMs or modems? Or is it just the bad coverage in my area? I'm grandfathered in the old AT&T unlimited data plan, so I used the phone a lot as a mobile AP so any suggestions how to increase the speed if possible would be greatly appreciated. I realize it won't be as good as a broadband connection, but 300kb/s upload seems a bit ridiculous.
Since I don't have the appropriate number of posts to embed, I'm attaching the screenshot if someone would be so kind as to take a look.
Thank you

Fasty 2.5 uses kb1 modem, perhaps it's not good in your area.
If you liked Fasty 2.5, then i am sure you ll love Fasty II v2.0 it uses kh3 modem, try it. It might solve yourarea issue.
Flashing an i9000 rom should get you the higher upload speeds (Mosaic is pretty good). I went from 300 to 1000 upload.

I've Seen several Post that Contradicts the New JI2 Leak Modem & After Testing I truly think it worst than the Old one.
With that Being said I've Packaged the Modem.bin into a ODIN Ready file to be Flashed..
Please Let me Know the Results.. I'm now Getting back my 6Mbps Downloads again & no longer stuck at 3.5Mbps to 4Mbps downloads.

I get basically the same results you see Eugene. I can't break 2.1-2.5Mbps on JI2 modem in the same room that I can get 4.5+ Mbps on JFD modem.
Thanks for your hard work, cheers

Thanks for letting me know.. I spoke up in another thread & a guy Called BS on what I had said about this... Glad it's not just me seeing these results.
Some of this likely has to do with the actual service quality in your area..I get fairly similar results regardless of which modem.bin...
Tested just now and got 4.1Mbps down/1.3Mbps up with JI2, which is basically what I had been getting with JFD.
Though speed doesn't seem to be impacted for me here, at work where my reception is marginal to say the least, I get better data connections consistently with JI2.

See I'm just the Opposite in the same Location / Same spot with out moving the Phone... I get the same result on my Phone.. 3.5 /4 with new & 6+ with old.
Only thing I can figure is the older modem bin is more tolerant to higher noise to signal ratio..
Likely what's going on in my case is that I'm limited by backhaul capacity so that I simply cannot see the faster speeds you are with the original modem.bin from JFD.
Still, at the no-man's-land I work at, JI2 will allow me to have some sort of data connection (usually Edge) when the JFD modem will not, so I'm sticking with JI2 for now. Just works out better for me.

No I totally agree, use the one that works best for your area for sure
So I'm running your R3 Hybrid Rom and my speeds are a lot better than any other rom I had. If I want to try this out and I end up having worst speeds, then how would I revert back to my original settings?
Well I wouldnt call bs on you but my results are that with the New JI2 Leak I can reach a speed of ~6mbps Before on the old firmare i was alway ~3mbps. My upload went from ~500 kbps to ~1.5 mbps. My Ping is also down to about 85. The speed test on my sig is outdated and was done through tethering on a stock JFD firmware.
I think that not all these phone are behaving the same just like jac oc kernel on some phones it works on some it just simply doesnt. I was running your rom before and even though it was a lot snappier i wouldnt sacrifice the GPS, Battery Life, And browsing speed I get with the New JI2 Leak. Others are not so lucky with the new firmware, But calling BS is TOO General of a stement because every single hardware is slightly different.
These are the new results i thought I would quickly share just to show the improvement the new firmware made for me compared to my old one in my signature:
anyway to get this so it can be flashed via clockwork?
ok im trying to understand how this works. if i were trying to pull this modem.bin and push it to my phone using adb it wouldn't work. is that right? Is that because the kernel doesnt support the newer version? i was thinking of pulling it from a clean nandroid of the update and going about it that way... or would i be wasting my time?
Thanks
I'm getting 4-5Mb/s on the new firmware.
That's pretty much the same i was getting on the old JFD.
I don't know if it has ti do with the service level in your area; I am just posting the results i'm getting.
On another note, Eugene, my compass was working fine in JI2, but not in your Franken-Twiz rom.
Nice I also hope we can get the new update broken down into three files for odin and not just one. It seems to work better that way.

I am getting 5MB down and 1MB up on JIT2. bassically the same if not better then the stock.
Im in the USA on tmobile.
okay, might be something odd then in my area.. Same Results though with BarakinFlorida. Tower issue?
might be, even though i am in Florida too.
lol
or maybe there are some phones with hardware issue?
it's very strange
what do you think eugene?
and sorry i called BS on u in the other thread
lol
My speed test results are wildly inconsistent with the leaked firmware, but the phone seems a little quicker. Thanks for this, will have to flash on my lunch break.
Anyone else getting dropped calls lately after flashing franktwiz or is it just me?

it caused by hitting Volume down & up.
I've not been able to track the issue as of yet.
I'm running cognition 3.02 speed mod,and jk4 or kp1 and can't seem get the H signal, is it the rom Im using and is H all that much better than 3g. Thanks

H is basically like 3.5G. The speeds are all relative, and unless you are looking directly at the speeds, It's basically the same when your surfing the web. As for your connection, I haven't run cognition in a while so I don't know about that.

I don't think it is a part of Cog., but is part of Perception. I personally like Phoenix and it has HSPA enabled.

Pheonix wass my first rom. Very very stable rom, I liked it but couldn't get over the unreliable battery. I'm on Ultimate JPY v5.6 right now (speedmod, tweaks, lagfix) and I'm getting about 18 hours with heavy usage.
Ok so if I want the H signal I need to change roms correct, not modems right? Was thinking of flashing perception anyway and using speed mod and jk4 modem. That should get me H?
Also, (for some crazy reason) it's possible when making the ROM to turn off the H and have the 3G only.
Just FYI.

The HSDPA/HSUPA is not actually part of the ROM.
It's the Kernel/Modem that your using. It's only available on the i9000 based setups.
So if the ROM your using is i9000 based it will be enabled by default
Ya that's what I figured but when cog starts up it says i9000, but anyway I'll try perception see if it activates H.Thanks
I just flashed Perception 10.3 a few days ago and i get HSDPA.
3g/h depends on the modem, not the rom. most of the modems already have the h enabled.

But captivate based roms wont ever display H.

Battery consumption drops significantly if you lock the phone to UMTS 3G.

Just like everyone is saying, HSUPA is enabled once you install an I9000 modem.
On stock captivate ROMS (like Cognition), an "H" symbol will not appear, but you still have an HSUPA enabled if an I9000 modem is installed. Only I9000 based ROMs will show an "H".
The best way to check if you have HSUPA enabled on a stock captivate ROM is getting an internet speed test app and checking your upload speed. At my fastest, I get about 500kbps upload speeds with only 3G enabled.
I have an I9000 modem installed, and HSUPA is enabled, as you can tell from my internet speed test results, but my phone still shows "3G" because I use a ROM based on Rogers stock Froyo release.
Wow, good to know. All this time I thought the "H" was sub 3G speeds..
You'll have to excuse me, I'd been using an unlocked G1 on AT&T's network for almost two years; never had 3G until now.
Hey sorry if I'm posting something that has already been talked about, I know I'm new. After I installed serendipity I have been having really bad reception (I had excellent service everywhere before). I'm with Rogers in Ontario, I've read that my phone may be looking for a faster/more powerful tower, and disregarding a closer slower one? Any way to fix these settings? I would prefer not to reflash haha.
Thanks for any help
Could always try a different modem [Modems] - (Froyo & Gingerbread) - WCDMA 850 enabled
Just found that the JK4 modem works best for me in my area. Anyone in southern Ontario should try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867309
.zip can be found from jhnstn00 a couple posts down
I know the data speed on captivate GB bootloader based rom will always be less than i9000 based roms. I recently switched from apex to pinnacle and I never get H just 3G which has horrible speed.
Can I fix by using i9000 modem? Are they compatible?
sent from my cappy rocking gingerbread
No. I try it and data and text work but cant make any call
You need to combine modem with Kernel. To my knowledge no I9000 gb kernel works on i897 rom. Also the speed difference is just upload.

i noticed speed difference in basic internet surfing too. I dont H anywhere now which I used to have everywhere on i9000 roms...
Captivate roms, with the exception of the very latest leaks, don't show H, only 3G.
H= HSPA wich is only a upload speed increase. You can try different I897 modems see if you can increase your bandwith in your area. Personally I get about 3Mbs download and 300Kbs upload.
Edit: My observations are based on ATT network.

So by latest leak you mean KJ3?
sent from my cappy rocking gingerbread
I think it started with ki1, then the next couple had the H+, but the last one didn't. I think it is kj3.
H and 3G usually have about the same dl (HSDPA)speed. The difference is in the upload (HSUPA), which is capped at about 350-375kb/s. The i9000 modems don't have that upload cap built in. The H+ is only cosmetic at this point, until att starts increasing speeds through the towers.
So I read that it was not possible ti get a captivate modem/rom to support 4g/hspa+
However I read several ppl on here get the h+ with their captivate?
I look thru the roms but none say hspa+...
Can someone help me out and tell me which rom I can get the h+ with?
3g ib my area is terrible I get 50kbps if I'm lucky, and h+ is available here...
Thanks so much. I really hope its possible, I love captivate and would hate to have to get a new phone...

Unfortunately, our phones don't support H+. We can get HSDPA, and the i9000 modems can get HSUPA, but that's not true H+. However, if HSDPA/HSUPA is acceptable, try flashing an i9000 modem/kernel/rom setup and see if that works for you.

if 3g in your area is that crappy, dont think that hspa is going to fix it. it all rides on the same bands/frequencies. hspa+ is just an increased 3G. in my experience with all my '4G' devices, excluding my LTE ones, obviously, its no different than rocking an i9000 rom/modem on my captivate.

To clarify this one thing for ya...
Those reporting the "H+" on their Captivate were more than likely running one of the previously leaked i897 firmwares, that had that built into the leak itself. So nothing official and probably someone thought it would be cool, funny, etc. etc.
The latest i897 leaks are back to just showing the "3G".
Anyway, just an fyi.
