Hspa+ ? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I read that it was not possible ti get a captivate modem/rom to support 4g/hspa+
However I read several ppl on here get the h+ with their captivate?
I look thru the roms but none say hspa+...
Can someone help me out and tell me which rom I can get the h+ with?
3g ib my area is terrible I get 50kbps if I'm lucky, and h+ is available here...
Thanks so much. I really hope its possible, I love captivate and would hate to have to get a new phone...

Unfortunately, our phones don't support H+. We can get HSDPA, and the i9000 modems can get HSUPA, but that's not true H+. However, if HSDPA/HSUPA is acceptable, try flashing an i9000 modem/kernel/rom setup and see if that works for you.

if 3g in your area is that crappy, dont think that hspa is going to fix it. it all rides on the same bands/frequencies. hspa+ is just an increased 3G. in my experience with all my '4G' devices, excluding my LTE ones, obviously, its no different than rocking an i9000 rom/modem on my captivate.

To clarify this one thing for ya...
Those reporting the "H+" on their Captivate were more than likely running one of the previously leaked i897 firmwares, that had that built into the leak itself. So nothing official and probably someone thought it would be cool, funny, etc. etc.
The latest i897 leaks are back to just showing the "3G".
Anyway, just an fyi.

Stupid newby question "H or 3G" ?

On my ATT TILT with custom ROM on ATT network in NYC I can see only "H" icon and never "3G" icon.
On original TILT user guide it says you get H when HSDPA is available and 3G when UMTS is available.
Is it "ok" and means I am getting fastest data access possible or should I be worried?
I tried to do some search here on forum and some research otherwise but frankly it's a bit confusing.
Thanks in advance
Anyone want to set this guy straight? I would do it but it seems that ATW has a problem with my corrections. I am 100% sure I have seen this question, what, about a dozen or so times?
**Please note my sig has a great link**
I knew that question was stupid from the start

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people .
H is better than 3G. I have not seen a 3G icon since I parted ways with the stock AT&T ROM 10 months ago.

I've not seen the 3G icon WITH the stock AT&T ROM in months. I don't think the ROM has anything to do with it.

I just used KaiserTweak to get HSDPA. It is definitely better.

Better rom, better radio, better signal. Of course the rom has something to do with it. I live in a small town outside of Boston that thinks that cell towers are a blight on the landscape ( they are probably right ) but we have no cell towers in town. I have had stock and custom roms.
With the stock rom and stock radio I get 3G most of the time but sometimes only E . With the upgraded rom and associated upgraded radio, I got 3G all the time and sometimes H . 3G and H are the same (to me anyway ).

best AT&T Radio for Signal and reception?

what is the best Radio for At&t reception and signal strength?
Thanks guys

Well sounds like we have an WM user. On Android they are modems and to be honest it is a best one for your area. I use jk4 in Alaska
actually never has a winmo device I have dell streak, first droid device.
but Im asking so I can flash the wife's cappy, she's complaining about signal strength, let me check what rom she has, I believe she has 500mhz speedmod kernel on a i9000 based rom.
I though I saw some HTC droid's , like Evo refer to modem as Radio

oh ok that makes sense. HTC use radios and not modems. just make sure that the rom fits the kernel and modem. it will be trial and error.
Not to be a stickler but doesn't this belong in the q4 -q1 modem thread?

Isn't zel a mod? He seemed alright with it's placement haha
It is like zelendel said it is mostly trial and error for your area but I would give JL2 and JK4 a try they have given me the best results JL2 better signal but JK4 almost the same signal but slightly better battery life for me anyway
I made some changes to build.prop to my Dell Streak on AT&T, based on a thread I found on xda, it seemed to boost my 3g speeds, will build.prop tweaks boost signal reception as well? possibly??
edit: nevermind, didnt find the tweaks in build.prop, or defualt.prop, are they somewhere else? or are they missing from build.prop?
the lines like ro.ril.gprs_class=12, etc.
and ro.ril.hsxpa=3, etc.
Dont forget the 3 new ones, kc1 and the 2 jp9 modems.

Question regarding Fasty 2.5 ROM Modem (Horrendous upload?)

I have a quick question, and this may be completely based on the crappy service in my area as I usually get around 2-3 bars. I absolutely LOVE this ROM, but I'm not sure if the problem here is in the ROM or just my service. I have read that non I-9000 ROM modems are generally capped around ~300kb/s upload, however it's showing my phone using HSDPA, so I'm a bit disappointed with the results of my speedtests. My friends have showed me SS's where they have speeds of ~1.5 mbps (with the same signal strength). Is this due to them using different ROMs or modems? Or is it just the bad coverage in my area? I'm grandfathered in the old AT&T unlimited data plan, so I used the phone a lot as a mobile AP so any suggestions how to increase the speed if possible would be greatly appreciated. I realize it won't be as good as a broadband connection, but 300kb/s upload seems a bit ridiculous.
Since I don't have the appropriate number of posts to embed, I'm attaching the screenshot if someone would be so kind as to take a look.
Thank you

Fasty 2.5 uses kb1 modem, perhaps it's not good in your area.
If you liked Fasty 2.5, then i am sure you ll love Fasty II v2.0 it uses kh3 modem, try it. It might solve yourarea issue.
Flashing an i9000 rom should get you the higher upload speeds (Mosaic is pretty good). I went from 300 to 1000 upload.

[Q] Modems how do they work?

so i have a captivate, i love it. however my carrier has limited service where i live. i have seen people say they get better download and upload speed with different modems and i myself have flashed different modems and used speedtest app to see these differences. my question(s) are really as follows
can a modem give you better reception?
is it possible to make your antenna in your phone work harder to pick up better signal strength?
in general is there a way i can learn how modems work?
thanks smart peeps!

First, a modem us the binary file that runs the antenna. So if we were able to control and edit the binary (which we can't) you could potentially make the antenna "work harder".
so a modem works by controlling, software wise, the frequencies the antenna uses. For example, I9000 modems tell the antenna to also pick up hsupa, and that is why I9000 based roms have faster data. The modem needs to also be compatible with the kernel so it can run properly. This is why e can't use modems like JK4 on captivate based Roms.
flashing a modem can increase signal. It is all about where you are though. JK4, which is a great modem in Boston, might not be a great modem in San Francisco, or Detroit.
there is a sticky thread in the development section for this with a website that will help you pick out a new modem. Make sure it is compatible with your kernel first.

There is not an easy answer to this (I don't think) but here is an interesting read that may be of some help (or at least an interesting read )...

True... Detailed.. However, mostly irrelevant..
When you flash a modem, you're flashing an operating system for the communications chip. It's an entire stand-alone operating system designed to minimalistically receive and transmit data. The communications chip is capable of running an entire device. This is evidant when you examine the binary. It contains keyboard, mouse and display drivers.
When the Captivate was released, it was released as a 3G device, not H, so its communications chip was configured to work as a 3G modem. This was likely a marketing decision as "3G" was all the rave at the time.
A modem won't improve your reception unless your old modem was configured incorrectly
As far as signal strength, it won't improve unless your old modem was configured incorrectly.
There are several tweaks which are applied in each version of modem firmware for different devices. Unfortunately, the communications chip is locked down/Closed-source Qualcrap.. So, we will never fully understand what configurations are available, nor can we do anything other than test and see which one works more effectively.
hey thank you so much guys, this is really interesting, sadly a little depressing but interesting. i have one last question then, since i am running my i897 captivate... with the ICS rom, does this mean i should use i9000 or i897 modems? i heard that i9000 modems were just better then i897 so i am using them... but if the above is true, i shoud be using i897 to get proper configuration of my device.
you guys are all awesome and ill be mashing the thanks button!

U have to use the specific modems for ICS... See here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16843698&postcount=1
And more specifically...See this page... http://soggycashew.weebly.com/cm7miui--ics-modems.html
yea im flashing a few of the ics i897 vs the i9000 i was using... still though... i have full bars with my old blackberry bold 9000 compared to my cappy which has 1 or 2... i dont understand why.

[Q] Modems,optusAUS on CM9

trying to break this down so that i get my questions answered. here it goes
im running CM9 build 17 all stock. on the optus network in Australia. a bit south of Melbourne but it shouldn't really matter where i am as long at im near major civalisation right? i mean i could go anywhere in aus and get the same results for reception and calls as long as im near the towers?
im looking for a good modem for me to use on the network, i have been looking at the voodoo majick that is nexus s modems and dont want to go there, they look silly. no 2g sometimes and no one is realy testing them. there all getting half baked results. and who knows what problems they havent encounterd yet.
ive tryed a few modems including offical optus modems and they dont seam to be the best performers sometimes. bad batterylife or slower network switching or bad call quality. what bands should i be looking for. i see alot of people looking for 850 bands but i dont think optus uses that one. what networks do here anyway? i know telstra do.
links or information will help give us anything and everything. ie try this/read that so on. i want to be informed for the future as well as a good kick in the general direction of go do it yourself in that direction.
Look for siky_dude 's modem thread, get radio-cm-7-ics-SGS-XWJW1-signed.zip and radio-cm-7-ics-SGS-XXJW4-signed.zip, try them, and read the thread for more info. Also look for the Australian thread. Good luck. And search moar
