Hey, so I had my nook auto-nootered (1.0.1) and just factory reset it (1.0). I haven't messed around with it in a while and things have changed since I last messed around with it and I really cant seem to find a tut on how to get clockwork mod to run and then flash a rom. From what I understand nookie froyo is the most popular rom but it needs an 8 gig card though I read it can be made to fit on a 2 or 4gig card? Anyway any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, just picked up my NC. Messed around a little bit, got it to root fine, running Froyo off my SD. Want to get CM7, was thinking of going the phiremod route.
I'm a little bit confused with the CW version and ext4 compatibility. I'm just a little worried cuz I ended up in a CW boot loop when i tried flashing Froyo to internal mem. But I think its cuz i had flashed the old recovery? Anyway, got back to stock and upgraded/re-rooted.
So can i just go from Rooted 1.1 to burning a bootable clockwork 3.0.1 on to my SD card? Then flash a ROM and Gapps?
The bootable SD card thread says something about the partition needing to be ext4, which is what's freaking me out. Is there a kernel to flash before? am i skipping an entire step here?

Thats what I did and it worked perfectly. Phiremod has gapps and market built in.

Don't forget that you will need a uSD for 'data' after as well as the one for installing.

I have CM7 running on my NC, but I find that I'd like to read the magazines that I subscribed to (dumbly, without noting that I'd be unable to read them after the transition). One possible solution would be to use an old MicroSD card as a boot point for the stock ROM. Is that possible? Can I put the stock software on an SD card in such a way that it will boot and save state when it's inserted, but will otherwise boot to CM7? I've looked for this... I've seen similar scenarios, but not quite this one. Many thanks in advance, whatever the answer ends up being.
Does the Nook App not work for your magazines?
No, sadly, it doesn't. From everything I can find, only the Nook Color can read them, not the other forms of software such as iOS, Android and PC.
Just do the dual boot option. I have cm7 on partition 1 and stock rooted on partition 2.

So I just got a nook color and obviously I want to root it, but heres what I would like to know. Should I upgrade to 1.2 first? I figure if Im going to root, then I dont need the features of 1.2 If I root and install CM7 with CWR and all that good stuff to the eMMc can I put it back to stock nook at any point (like in case I want to return it)? My understanding is that autonooter is to install android to an microSD card and you still have stock nook when not booted from sd, correct?
Im not looking to run HC and Id think Id like to keep the features that the nook has, but is booting off SD really that slow? Can I still over clock if booting off sd? Besides CM7 is there a stable working froyo or GB rom? I run Chevy's SS 5.2 on my D1 which is GB with some tweaks and would like something similar.
I know its a lot, but id appreciate the help, search for all of these is very overwhelming as most of the answers are buried in 100's of replies.
Running from SD can be at least as fast as eMMC and does not require rooting, and you can upgrade stock without worrying. The "Android Odyssey" blog post linked in my sig has links to all the resources you'll need for a fast and painless CM7 set-up.
Maybe you'll still want to root afterward, but I started out intending to just 'try out' CM7 on SD, and couldn't be happier with my system as-is.
I have been lurking and reading for a couple of weeks now. I bought a used NC with 1.1 and used Autonooter to root it. Works great.
I bought a second NC which had the 1.2 s/w on it. I used the manualnooter process to root it. That works pretty well.
Now I'm thinking about getting into the nightly CM7 game. I'm wondering is there anything I need to watch out for with the 2 NC's I have if I do this. Do I have to take them back to stock? Can I just follow the CM7 instructions?
Any insight and guidance would be appreciated

You can run CM7, stable or nightly, off of an SD card. You don't have to change anything on your Nooks to do this. In fact, they don't even need to be rooted. Running CM7 on the SD card will not change anything on the built-in memory of the Nook.
Look for the "size agnostic" thread, follow the directions, and you're good to go.

yeah, just follow the instructions on flashing cm7 for the first time. and make sure you understand the CWM instructions. you may want to try a stable rom for now. there are lots of battery and kernel issues right now with the nightly builds. but not to fear the devs are working hard to fix them. just stay with the stable's and your be fine. Well, I went ahead figuring "How hard could it be anyway?".
I did the nand backup with CWM 3.0.2.8
I then ran ROM manager V4.2.0.2 from internal memory.
I choose the option that allows me to download ROMS.
I chose CyanogenMod, and then chose 7.0.3.
I downloaded the ROM
I then chose Install ROM from SD card
It asked me about clearing caches, etc and I chose the default values already checked.
It installed without errors.
I rebooted and it got to the last part of the boot process where the word "color" is rapidly changing and stayed there indefinitely,
I rebooted with CWM on the SD card and tried to reinstall the Manualnooter I loaded on this NC a week ago.
Rebooted. Still hung up.
I copied my nand backup to the CWN SD card and chose restore.
It booted back to my manualnooter install successfully.
So I'm successfully back where I started.
Can someone help me understand what I did wrong on what I need to do to make it work? Thanks
Not sure what went wrong, but I would also suggest trying verygreen's size-agnostic approach. You keep your manual nooter and can run CM7 from an SD card to see if you want to go all the way and remove the stock BN software.

Or, if you want to go crazy, you could try racks' dual boot SD card image of Phiremod 6.2 (a variation of CM7) and Honeycomb. That's what I'm using and Phiremod works great (aside from battery life ) and honeycomb is just plain slick to use.

I have read and watched and searched different ways on rooting the nook and they all either don't seem to work or are confusing. Can someone point me in the direction of complete step by step instructions for rooting my nook on a micro SD card. I feel dumb while trying to do this because its my first ever root even though I have assembled computers. Its the software that makes me nervous. Thanks for any advice.
I totally understand how you might be hesitant to jump in. I came here a few months ago from a windows phone and had no clue about Android devices. Get yourself a Sandisk card (4 or 8gb ought to do the trick). I went with a cheaper card at first and was very disappointed with the way it worked.

It may be a little daunting at first (I'm a new NC owner myself). But just keep in mind, the NC is setup to boot off the SD Card first. So you essentially always have a recovery method there. Also, if you don't flash CWM (Clockwork Mod) to be your recovery, you can always use some methods to restore the device ( 8 failed boots for example). The methods are listed on the forums quite a few times. But, basically... android is just another flavor of *nix. Though it does have its own intricacies.
As long as you backup your current setup through CWM's backup operation (AKA: nandroid). You can do pretty much anything and just do a restore to get back to where you started. It's almost like ghosting a computer... It just doesn't redo your partitions.
Get yourself a copy of CWM Here's the most recent 1gb image. This basically gives you a bootable SD Card that can backup/restore the internal memory, format it, and flash images.
You can get the latest cyanogemod rom's nightlies here. You also need Google Apps if you're going to flash the new rom though.
And here's a guide to revert to stock.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with the SD Card system... I would just root the internal rom and flash back if you don't like it.... or flash a different rom, like CM7, if you want the nook to be more of a tablet than an e-reader... just keep in mind... it wasn't meant to be a tablet...

Ya just wanted to chime in. Its pretty hard to mess up on the process of rooting and if you do there's ton of threads to help you out along the way! Even the NC wasn't meant to be a true android tablet it does the job well and well worth the money. Maybe ill go better later down the road, but after what I paid for this NC brand new on CL I SOOOOO happy!
