"You asked, we listened. This spring, use your NOOK Color to send e-mail and explore popular apps like Angry Birds, Drawing Pad, Lonely Planet Phrasebooks, and Wine PhD. Stay tuned here for news about these exciting new features and when the firmware update will be ready. (P.S. Yes! We said Angry Birds!) What apps would you love to see on your NOOK Color?"
I feel so giddy!
Hmm... but Angry Birds is available. I even have AB Rip lol.

Why would Facebook let you down. I have it working on my nook.
I think he means for a non-rooted Nook.

I meant that on the nook official facebook page B&N is reporting that hey are updating the NookColor in April with flash and their app store. since this seems to be in confirmation with the HSN information I was hoping that what they said on facebook was going to come true. which means that people who love the B&N launcher so have just stock rooted will be able to get flash. also supposedly angry birds for the nook color will have a character specific for B&N. I was trying to suggest that i was placing all my hopes on the facebook page of B&N. obviously i failed in my effort because once you explain it, it loses its magic.
I think most importantly is the fact that this likely have newer kernel from which to develop better roms by the Devs or at least roo t it to a froyo with everything working properly.

I'm quite content with the idea of getting a Nook Color for my birthday, but I think I'd fall in love with it if it had flash capabilities.
Does it?

Not as of yet but neither does the ipad. You will do fine without it unless you play those annoying flash games

One great use is flash video. >.>
Doesn't the Nook Color have ARM 7?
And comparing an iPad to a Nook Color is like comparing apples and oranges...

I thought the lack of flash would be a bummer too. The only thing that sucks is trying to do flash videos as you were saying. This won't be possible until the NC gets a 2.2 upgrade. I think I read somewhere that it should be in the next month or so, can anyone confirm this?
You can still watch flash videos through various apps like skyfire... i think

Actually I can confirm a 2.2 release.
Engadget:
"And, thankfully, there might be a much easier way coming, with Barnes & Noble reportedly telling Smartphone Mag that Android 2.2 will be officially coming to the Nook Color in January. Yes, Android 2.3 is what's happening, but this is still an exciting upgrade as it will finally also allow access to a traditional Android home screen and even enable the Android Market."
But in the same article, it says that froyo has already been hacked on...

That's not a confirmation, it's just the rumor we were all talking about a couple of weeks ago that's been subsequently debunked by B&N.

Yeah, you're probably right. >_<
B&N has said that 2.2 will come in 2011 at some point.
Patience young Jedi.
In Devs we trust...they will get it done....
Relatively speaking the development on the NC has been quite active given the low user base, and short amount of time it has been on the scene.

getting 2.2 doesn't necessarily mean nook will support flash. I have a feeling it won't be fully supported and may be like the archos with choppy flash playback.
but will be interesting to see what happens.
i think people need to realize that the device is meant to be an ereader and I don't think B&N is going to spend money to make the device into a tablet.
Well flash has already been proven to work based on the 2.2 build here.
While it may not be completely smooth, it will be useful for sure.
My netbook doesn't even run flash video completely smooth either but its perfectly acceptable.
I purchased a Nook last Friday at BN. The BN employee was giving me his entire sales pitch which I let him because I wanted to look at it before I was going to buy it. He went through the usual stuff of being an awesome e-reader but then went through another tangent that it will be able to moonlight as tablet.
He showed me some of the extra apps and web browser then he said that the nook will be getting an update later this month and that you will be able to install apps. (I remember hearing about the Nook rumors and denial. ) I asked him you mean the Nook will get the Google market place? He said no, it will be a more controlled environment by Barnes and Noble. We want to prevent things like porn and malware going to your device. So that means a Nook App Store? Interesting, huh? I would rather have Google market place but for the average consumer this would be huge.
I guess this already known: (You can delete the post)

This has pretty much been known from the beginning. It will be an update, but it will not be a 2.2 update...
I really see no point for B&N to ever got to 2.2 if they are going to keep a closed type of App store.
I don't know anything about Android, other than 2.2 has flash. That's the biggest reason I want 2.2. To me the web without flash is very 10 years ago.

Understandable.
I have been hearing something about a switchover from Flash to WebM..Not sure what its all about.
I am certain at some point the Nook is going to get Flash with 2.2 or 2.3, but probably later than sooner...

My wife loves my NC, she wants one for herself but doesn't want all the glitches I keep hitting due to my constantly trying the newest thing posted here on XDA.
So my question is what would be a great setup on a new NC for a non-techie type to use that is rock stable, has B&N/Android Markets, can play games like Angry Birds, still function as an eReader and if possible play Youtube videos?

Imho Autonooter 3.0.0. The only issue for me was the wifi-dead-after-sleep-thingy.
Just use the nookie froyo or honeycomb builds that run off a Microsd card and leave the stock nook software as it is for the lady. Just boot off the microsd card when ever you use it and boot the stock off the emmc for the wifey.
or
You can also get another nook color. If you are like me, you don't like to share or hear complaints.

Picked up a second NC yesterday. Had to drive 45 miles to do it but I wasn't giving mine up...lol
I'd actually suggest 1.0.1 rooted, since I've found it has greater compatability than 1.1.0 and theres no real reasons to upgrade to 1.1.0 (you can get pinch zoom without it)
I'd suggest Stock 1.0.1 rooted (or 1.1.0 rooted if you prefer), with overclock.

What are the compatability issues MattJ951? Can you point me to a thread discussing these?
For those of you running CyanogenMod, do you still have the full B&N Reader experience? I'd love to run CM but my kids have books on the Nook Color. Not regular books but the nook kids books that only run on Nook Color and iPad.
unfortunately you have to stay on auto-nooter (rooted stock eclair rom) to keep the B&N stuff.
Right now the NOOKcolor app that comes with the stock OS and supports newspapers, magazines, and kids books does not work on anything but the stock OS. There is ongoing work to try to get it going under alternative ROMs. Subscribe to this thread for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976270
Unfortunately the best you can do right now is set up dual-boot between CM7 and stock.

Thank you for pointing that thread out to me. I absolutely will subscribe to it. That is exactly the kind of think I wanted to see. I very much appreciate it.
Let me make sure I get this right. Say you abandon B&N stock and run something like NookieFroyo or CM7 then download the B&N app from the market. The downloaded B&N app does not work on NF/CM7 ?!?!!
The Nook app works under CM7 but will not read magazines, newspapers, or books that self-read. This last one leaves out many good kids books.

The videos of CM7 I've seen on Youtube look fantastic, but if I can't read my Economist subscription, then it's a deal breaker.
I just rooted my NC last night with Autonooter and it's a real thrill to suddenly feel like I finally own my Nook Color (an un-rooted Nook feels more like Barnes and Noble is lending you the device). I'd love to go full throttle with something like CM7, but honestly, I primarily bought the NC as an eReader+ so I'm just happy to be able to play the occasional game of Angry Birds. Now, if Popcap will just get off their butts and release Plants v. Zombies for Android all will be awesome in my world.
http://www.slashgear.com/bn-nook-tablet-firmware-update-blocks-app-sideloading-20203500/
Is it new or the news was old?
If it is true, then wonder how NT owners think about it?
Got so hype b4 release with false info (rumor 1.2GHz dual core), then released with 1.0GHz one, B&N hardcore fans said it's ok, not too bad, then discovered the bootloader is locked and now, side-loading also locked.
Is it rooting an only way out?
I'm so glad that I'm not jump on the bandwagon.
My thought
1. NC is more value than NT (wink wink)
2. B&N heads into the wrong direction.
You can sideloaapps on the Nook Tablet. I've done it with the unit sitting under our Christmas tree right now.
As to the value of doing so, it depends on how tied you plan to be to the B&N walled garden. If you:
Subscribe to magazines or newspapers through B&N and like the auto-delivery features.
Are interested in their enhanced pubs like children's book with Read to Me, or Conde Nast zines such as Wired.
Need the free read in store capability.
Then the B& N firmware can be pretty compelling. For now at least, the Android Nook Market app is woefully short of being the same experience.
If none of these apply, then sacking with the B&N firmware offers little.
Isn't installing from unknown sources blocked with the stock rom?
It was on the Nook Color when I got mine. I had to root to enable unknown sources

That was hole was blocked with todays OTA update.

From what I've read, the new update will block you from side loading apps, but any apps that you have side loaded BEFORE the update with still work (for now)
