[Q] Data Connection Problems - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey
For the last day I've been having problems getting my data connection to work.
I recently disabled HSPA to reduce battery consumption, just leaving it at 3G via the service menu *#301279#. It worked fine until I had updated my firmware (to Darky's Rom 9.5).
I'm back to Darky's Rom 9.3 (which worked flawlessly for weeks) after having disabled all lagfixes and doing a full wipe of /system; /cache; dalvik etc. Now, I can't get a working data connection, be it EDGE, 3G or HSPA. Only very rarely will it connect, and when it does the actuial connection seems to work.
In the service menu, under phone information, GSM Disconnects:
========DATA========
State: DcInactiveState
Disconnected at [various times]
fail because Insufficient Resources
The Question:
Is there some way to completely reset the service menu to defaults? And undo whatever silliness I've caused?
Phone Details:
Model: GT-I9000 (8GB)
Firmware 2.2.1
Baseband: I9000XXJPY
Kernel: Speedmod-k13c-500Hz
Darky's Rom v9.3.XWJS5
Update:
Flashed back to to Stock Firmware to rule out issues related to that. Still can't establish a connection.

Problem and how you describe it sound for me that it is not your phone which is causing this but your service provider... do you have this issue everywhere all the time?

I haven't had a chance to leave the house yet, but I'll see what happens in the morning, and go for a nice sunday stroll .

If it worked then its the rom you flashed .
It requires a full clean install of a stock rom with pit and repartition .

That's precisely what I did. Didn't make myself clear enough.
Just the rooted and removed the sim lock from the phone and inserted a SIM from another provider, using their default APN; that worked just fine. this leads me to conclude that it's, as MPKO said, not the phone; but rather the original APN settings, the SIM or indeed the provider.
Thanks for your suggestions, guys, it looks like it's pretty close to being sorted out.

Its most likely you have the wrong CSC for your network .
Rom Kitchin can build your rom and include your choice of CSC .

I had a look at my CSC files and found that they, while present, were outdated. Fixed that. Sadly, what isn't fixed are my connection woes.
It turns our that the provider is doing some infrastructure upgrades in the area and forgot to mention this to anyone, including local staff, until this morning. Offline-ness for a another week. Sigh.
I'd like to say: BIG THANK YOU to everyone who offered suggestions. You've been great. It was good to be able to try things rather than sit around being frustrated and wondering whether I should let the insurance handle it...

You r welcome, niceto be able to help.
Fyi that info what you provided was helping with the conclusion, "insufficient resources" sent by your modem.
Cheers!

[Q] No network connection?

Hey everyone,
I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S from Sasktel sometime in mid-october. This is the first android phone I've ever had, and after a few days i decided to try to root it. The rooting process went fine and I had absolutely no problems with my phone. However, i eventually decided to try a custom ROM. I went with Darky's Raw Steel Edition from this forum but after i successfully installed it (v2.2) I could no longer connect to the data network. I could still make calls and receive texts, but any sort of internet connection wouldn't work. When version 3.0 of the rom came out I installed it but had the same problem. I thought my best option at this point would be to just restore to the stock 2.1 firmware. I wasnt exactly sure what my phone had been on when i bought it, but i decided that I9000XWJM9 from samfirmware would be my best bet. I flashed with odin, and now I have no network connection at all! Does anyone know what my problem could be? Thanks so much to anyone who can point me in the right direction!
Find your apn settings from your provider or google it and it is is this forum aswell where theres list of them just enter your apn settings for your provider manually.
Go to www.tweaker.com and get the settings for ur network

Thanks for the help! However, I'm having some trouble finding the APN settings for sasktel, if anyone could post a link or something that would be great. And gadgetcheck, I think you gave me the wrong link, it takes me to like a media site with nothing about APN settings as far as I can see.

I am really sorry man!
I actually miss tiped the url in my last post.. Now this url will help u out...
If u need more help mention me http://twitter.com/gadgetcheck

the SaskTel i9000m stock firmware is JH2. If you're going to use a custom rom, use Doc's. That's what I'm currently using, no issues whatsoever (also on SaskTel in Saskatoon ) If you need the apn settings, let me know, and I'll just copy them out for you, but I'm pretty sure Doc's rom already has them, as I never had to add them. Though maybe they just carried over from my JH2 install?

csc unknown??

I had loads of problems installing jpu and basically had to give up on using odin . I eventualy got it installed bit by bit and its working fine. My only problem is the Csc shows as unknown, will this cause any problems or do i not need to worry .
do you still have a network signal? if yes, then csc unknow should not really be an issue and more of a nagging annoyance of you seeing it as "unknown".
you can get your CSC back though BUT this will do a factory reset of your phone meaning all the apps you have installed will be removed so please back them up first.
all the necessary details you need are in the first few pages of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787163
The automatic method will work for you. I am on JPU as well and it worked on me
Yea I have a signal and the phone is the best its been since buying it. The more I think about the trouble I had putting jpu onto the phone I'm just going to leave it until the next MAJOR update is available.
Thanks for the reply.

SOLVED - Sasktel (bell) phone running Darky's ROM

Ok so I'm running Darky's 7.5 ROM just loaded it and it's flying . i'm having issues connecting to my carrier. I"m from canada and run on a network owned by Sasktel. We get our phones from Bell and our current release is JL2 I think. I was running this ROM fine but wanted to see what all the hype was about .
Now the only problem i'm having is I can't register on my network and thus my phone isn't working as a phone, lol. can someone help me set it up. here are the frequencies we run on.
SaskTel
GSM - N/A
UMTS/HSPA - 850/1900
I went into the APN and set that up so I should have data I just need to get registered. I can see the network Sasktel but it wont let me register. I get the exact message when clicking on it
"Registering on Sasktel......You SIM card does not allow a connection on this network"
any help would be great, thanks
I tried going in here *#2263# but didn't know what to pick so I left it to automatic
I don't know.
When you flash back to official firmware, everything works fine again ?
This may sound funny but try 'sim unlock' your phone.
after flashing, your phone might have reverted back it's original lock which is to BELL.
I agree with the other reply stating for you to have your phone unlocked.

I unlocked my phone a while back and it's unlocked still, Network lock = off. and yes flashing to other roms specifically for my phone will work fine on the network. Is this because Darky's ROM is based on a European ROM JPY and i'm supposed to be running a Canadian ROM JL2?
Hi. I have a SGS straight from Sasktel here in SK. I checked my setting under 2263, and it is automatic (top one). After I checked it, it lost cellular connection for about a minute, then eventually came back (phew!).

awesome what happens when you go back into 2263 and click on the wcdma band, which ones are stared in there?I have 2100, 1900 and 900 starred but 850 is not.....Also could you post your APN settings. those are in settings, wireless network, mobile networks, access point names and then click on the inet.stm.sk.ca one and if it's not too much for you could you post them up here along with the wcdma band settings. Thanks bud
can we actually install darkys rom on BELL vibranat i9000M
i would like to find out if darkys Rom works with Bell vibrant thats i9000M from canada ?
well his rom is up and running fine yes, I just have to get the right setting to run on my carrier....I own a i9000m it's a bell phone that my carrier gets supply from. So yes his rom works great on this phone, it's so fast, I might try flashing a modem for the canadian phones and see if that works i'll post back
SOLVED - Sasktel (Bell) running Darky's ROM
So I figured it out, I was running JL2 and then flashed speedmod kernel to get 2e. I then upgraded to Darky's 7.5 ROM, when that came up I was unable to get on the network. I was getting an error "Sim doesn't allow connection on the network" error when looking in providers. anyways, I just flashed the JK3 modem and i'm back on the network with Darky's rom
I grabbed the modem from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846237
I used JK3 because they were having issues with JK4 bricking for some reason and didn't want to risk it. now to just get JL2 modem some how
There is a JL2 modem floating around somewhere.
I am also running jk3 modem with xxJPY, love my phone now.
No more bridling issues

It's very simple, TURN OFF ANY/ALL lag fixes!!!!! Back your **** up. then you can begin
You phone should be unlocked but might not have to be.....mine was, you can grab sgs unlocker form the app market also, You have to be running 2e recovery. so check on that first by powering your phone off, wait till it's actually off, froyo vibrates when it's shut down. After it's off, hold volume up, home button and power till you see the i9000m then let it go. it should boot into recovery. If you were running Froyo then you will have a 3e recovery, we need 2e. Also you should check and make sure you can get into download mode, by powering off, volume down, home and power key. If you can't get inot download mode you have to fix that first. if you can proceed:
So grab the recent stable speedmod kernel from hardcore here DON'T get the development version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756&highlight=speedmod
depending on how you want to flash grab either the CWM or the other one which needs to be flashed via odin. Flash either or and your phone should boot with 2e. follow the instructions hardcore has posted and make sure you hit the thanks button for him .
After we have 2e installed you can grab Darky's ROM located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
I used the non wipe one and didn't have issues, make sure you back your **** up before flashing anything. If you notice battery drain after you flash you could flash the wipe version just to make sure. anyways, Follow Darky's instructions to the T and dont forget to thank him
After his ROM boots, I grabbed a modem for our phones (bell, sasktel) I used JK3 because the search wasn't working last night but found this morning a link to JL2....i'm not sure if this is legit JL2 because I haven't used it but give it a shot if it doesn't work flash another on top (I can confirm JK3 works)
JL2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...1&d=1293577837
Grabbed that from a link Samdroid_G_S posted so thank him for that.
JK3: was from docs link located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846237&highlight=bell
you can thank him for that. I used JK3 because of the issues JK4 was causing. I wouldn't use JK4 but that' up to you.
again you can use either odin or CWM to flash the modem. once you flash the modem you should be able to register on the network. you might not have internet, so you will need to go in and edit your access point name. Located in your phone here:
Settings | wireless and network | Mobile Networks | access point names
If it is blank click the menu button and New APN, all you need for sasktel's is a name, can be whatever and APN, the APN should be "inet.stm.sk.ca" without the quotes. Leave everything else default and save it. you will have to click the bullet after you created it so it knows to use it. should be good after that. For bell just do a quick google search for bell apn or bell access point name, i'm sure someone has posted on xda also.
I am not responsible if you brick your phone, this is entirely on you if that happens.
Thanks man
That's what I have been looking for . A step by step tutorial how is the rom working for you I will give it a shot . I hope sd card Won't die on me again .I can deal with other problems but what could u do when sd card dies
on u .Thanks!
Hey no problem, by default the voodoo lag fix is disabled but honestly you won't need it.....

Nice, one of the great posts ever on xda. Is there any advantage to running darky's ROM? My SGS on JL2 has been good, and battery life seems awesome now that I turned off automated email checking.

Pretty much preference I guess. I love Darky's ROM but JL2 was good, Darky's seems faster it's built upon 2.2.1 and I read Samsung did some kernel upgrades so that's why it's faster. If you do try it out just make sure you can get into recovery and download mode first.
i can confirm that Darkys rom works, I'm running 7.6 atm. I did notice that the APN settings in my original settings were missing ports numbers for data.
I tried this and it did not work, I still don't have data connection and I am on Bell canada.
Are u still getting text's? If so then you are registered on the network, all you have to do is go into your access point names and create an entry, then highlight it after it's saved. See my post above

no connection with my sgs, please help! URGENT

Hi there, i have a really annoying and strange problem with my Galaxy s.
the phone can not establish connection with my simcard, wich means i cant call, text, or receive and calls or text messages. the simcard works good in my old htc hero and my xperia x10, and other simcards work fine in my galaxy too..
the phone seems to discover the card because it asks me for the pin code and it shows it has connection in the status bar.. but it never shows the gprs/3g/h icon anymore.. though i can connect to the internet with my phone.. and sometimes in the status bar it shows a little r (wich means roamin i guess) but i have roaming switched off in the settings.. wtf is happening ?
when i was on darkys 8.0 and 8.1 i had no problems, but when i upgraded to 9.0 the hell came loose :/ right now i am on the stock xwjs3 samsung firmware with no root or any other customizations.. everything is stock. what do you think is the problem? i had a thread started in a swedish android forum, and nobody could help me, so you guys are my last hope.. what the hell is wrong here ?
edit: i forgot telling that i can browse the web with my phone with no problems, but it doesnt show me any 3g/h/gprs icons when data active..
Try to go tommorow to your TELE2 provider store in Sweden, and ask for a new SIM card.
If that doesn't help, go back to darky's v8.0.
For example,
i'm also on TELE2 in Croatia, i have done the upgrade on darky's v9.0 no-wipe with lagfix turned on.
All of my APN settings stayed same, i can connect to the internet, really no issues.
Can u try the no-wipe version?
i have already aksed for a new sim card, but i dont think that would help.. because my sim card does work.. with every other phone i tryed, but not with my own
when i flashed darkys i did everything exactly like it said in description, 8.0 wipe > 8.1 nowipe > 9.0 nowipe
my apn settings are also left there in the settings, and when i check the info about the phone it says connected to sweden 3g (wich is tele2 3g in sweden) and it discovers pretty good signal, the problem is that i cant sms or call, or receive any of those either.. it says connected but not active.
Well it looks like, nothing is wrong with your SGS...in the hardware meaning.
Your 3G/H icons will only be displayed when you have internet traffic active.
And check your SMS settings and call barring options.
If that doesn't work, you can go back to v8.1
but the phone doesnt show the 3g/gprs/h icon even when i have data traffic active..
that is the only think working btw.. i can surf the web with my phone but it doesnt show the connection icons.. and the call barring options are all ok.
Well...you can always go back to v8.0
have tryed.. no luck
LOL...then put back in the stock firmware, then go to your providers store, and ask for new SGS
right now i am on stock firmware actually.. and if i cant find any other solution i will probably use the warranty..
good luck )

Nothing new you put on Darkys rom and its buggered up your phone join the big crowd .
Have you tried asking Darky .
Your only solution is a complete wipe of internal sd card system and data .
Install a stock Eclair and see if it works .
Otherwise darky bricks are priced at 150 dollars .

Thats what the phone was built with so less complications when something is wrong i find .Upgrade after if phone works OK or even take the chance to official upgrade via Kies Registry Patcher and save your official rom .

No Data Connection After Darky's 2.3 Update

Got myself into a bit of a problem here, basically I upgraded my phone from 2.2 to Darky's V10 beta today, all went well and the phone is working fine, except I can't get it to connect any kind of mobile data connection. Wifi works fine, just not mobile data. Calls and texts come through fine as far as I know.
I've tried reflashing the firmware with a wipe, and have also checked the APN settings are correct, yet I still can't get any connection.
Any suggestions here guys?
I had the same problem, after trying a bunch of different things found a modem to flash, and sure enough it worked perfectly! See attached file.
Also if you're on the Captivate there might be some other options as well- I think my phone had some sort of network lock put on it that I had to fix by following some instructions involving a bit of hex editing and adb. If the new modem doesn't work I can link you to that.
EDIT: I want to clarify that it may mess up your phone as well, although I assume that at this point you know how to run odin in those kinds of situations and such
Check your APN settings for Data/internet
(menu > settings > wireless and network > mobile networks > access point names)
if these settings are blank... he will have no internet/data conection.
One its BETA .
Two have you the correct Modem and CSC in the rom for your area .
Three Ask Darky but Darky never answers helps .
Four Darky kills more phones than any other method .
Five the usual kill Darky rom fix is .
Flash Froyo 2.2 via Odin with pit 512 and repartition checked .

Yeah I know it's a beta, doesn't stop me wanting to try and make the most of it though . Thanks for the help though, turns out it was quite a funny problem. During the time I was flashing Orange's 3G network went down. So once I finished flashing I couldn't get any connection and assumed it was a problem on my end, turns out it wasn't! This morning the problem is fixed and it's all working.
If only I knew this before I spend a couple of hours trying to fix it! Oh well
