Firstly, may I apologise, I know this has been covered, I've trawled the internet for hours but just can't seem to get an answer.
I recently updated my UK, unlocked Galaxy S to Froyo via the registry hack, all was fine (ish). Because Froyo had been delayed in the UK and wasn't as great when it was running on my phone I thought it would be safer to revert back to 2.1 and wait until the official UK release came out (I know some will ask me why I did this, I just felt that Froyo was held back for a reason and I couldnt get an answer as to if I could update to the UK version if I already had the Scandinavian one). So I did the reg hack again and was offered 2.1. Everything seemed to go smoothly until the phone rebooted after downloading from Kies. Now the phone's animation starts then the flashing S symbol displays for an extended time. After that, the screen goes black. If I touch the two touchscreen buttons they stay on but do not go off. If I hold the power button the phone turns itself off and when the phone is powered off and I plug it into my PC with a USB, the battery charging sign comes on.
The phone was rooted and I did have the OCLF on but uninstalled that and un-rooted before changing the firmware so it was back to stock.
Before I get 20 people telling me to put the phone in download/recovery mode I must tell you that I can't. My phone has never been able to do it. I've tried every single way and button order suggested. I'm not the only one who's phone won't do it either so it's not just me. The only way I ever saw recovery mode on my phone was when I used the one click root on the PC.
I'm at a total loss. Debugging was turned off because Kies won't let you do anything with it turned on and so ADB recovery is out also.
Please help if you can.
Many thanks,
Ryan
Boot to download mode, do a repartition with Odin and 512 pit flash, remove battery and boot again to download mode and then do a odin firmware flash to which ever firmware you want.
thanks intratech but I can't boot the phone into recovery or download mode (sorry should have stated that). Believe me, I have tried every combination. I did a lot of research and discovered that there are quite a few people for whom that feature was disabled.
if the 3 button combo is not working on your phone, you should not do these risky stuff actually
take a look at this thing

thanks Noobproof. I remember coming across that thread last night. Although I consider myself ok with software, soldering and slicing just isn't my forte. I haven't got a clue about soldering, etc. I've just come back from the Carphone Warehouse (Samsung suggested I go there as they are the service centres listed on the Samsung UK website). The engineer had the phone for half hour and said that the "board was faulty". Haven't got a clue what he meant by that, unless he meant the internal SD which a few people have had go on them. Anywho, he told me to ring Samsung and send it in for a repair. I did that and need to send my phone special delivery to a company called regenersis in Scotland.
I knew rooting and flashing custom roms was a risk, that's why I never touched Odin, etc. I used Kies to upgrade to Froyo and Kies to downgrade back to Eclair. You would think that sticking to official Samsung software would be safe. I must admit, when it was going well I loved my Galaxy but more and more I'm starting to wish I'd opted for the Iphone. It just seems that there have been so many glitches and bugs, I mean, why should there ever be a need for lag fix in the first place? I often found myself keeping my fingers crossed when downloading simple apps as that was usually touch and go!
Feeling a bit deflated now. Was hoping some clever boffin had designed a software solution that would recognise the phone and force it into download/recovery mode.
Ah well, thanks for taking the time to respond anyway.
Best wishes,
Ryan
You know i was very happy when i for the phone for the first time and while i was doing a research (i live in turkey and there is no stock android market here) i came along this forum. And i have learned that i havent got the 3 button combo. I downloaded the 3 button fix abd took the phone to samsung centre.
They told me that they cannot flash it and i made a huge fight then they accepted and i have my 3 buttons. Never give up your phone. I dont think the internal sd is faulty it is just corruppted if you can access the recovery menu you could fix it. Any way you have to find a service centre that has an anyway jig box other a jtag box otherwise they will have to replace the motherboard. Good luck

I would like to know how many of you had successfully updated their SGS (Samsung Galaxy S) to Froyo. I think this will help us understand the failure rates so people who do not want to risk bricking their phone.
1) Updated with no problems
2) Updated with problems
3) Tried to update and having problems
4) Did not update at all
If you are talking about roms.. Well most are a 1. I habent heard of an official froyo update. And.if.you by chance do.brick it, there are ways to unbrick it pretty easily.

I have the Bell Vibrant which is the I9000M.
I thought that Bell released an official update for their new Froyo. Check it out here
mobilesyrup.com/2010/12/08/bell-samsung-galaxy-s-vibrant-upgrade-to-os-2-2-froyo-coming-december-10th/
Did update my Bell Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000M with Bell release Froyo available using Kies and all seemed to be running smoothly until I had issues connecting my bluetooth and trying the voicedialing features that did not work in my case and after got Force close on every apps. Did a shutdown and got the device in a loop at boot up.
Will try tonight to reload the device with 2.1 and see from there to retry 2.2.
Finger cross !
I upgraded with no problems but I did do a factory reset as things started to get a bit slow and from what Ive read it is a good idea to do a reset to get rid of any residual 2.1 stuff on the device. Since then the update has been working well for me...
KNOCK ON WOOD!!!
I have 2 SGS phones so you'll just have to add another vote to the "successful upgrade" option in addition to the one I was able to cast
I've flashed the following 2.2's without any problems so far:
- unofficial JK3 (Canada) via ODIN
- official JK4 (Canada) via Kies
- straight JPU via ODIN
- JPU Doc RomMOD v2 via update.zip recovery
No problems with flashing.
And yes, clearing data & cache is helpful (mandatory?). Backups are good!
there is NO problem upgrading.
the Internal SD failure comes AFTER you have SUCCESSFULLY upgraded the phone, a few hours to a few days later

Cool. That makes this type of poll misleading then because someone reporting success today may have issues tomorrow (we can't change our vote correct?).
That's right. I saw your post about your phone going bust. Sorry to hear that.
I just can't get Kies to work -- it just says "connecting to device" and it hangs
Also can't install MPT USB drivers -- always fails. I installed the correct x64 bit Windows 7 drivers and everything.
Ughh
Wow. I didn't think people would have problems after the update. Man, I really should wait until we all know that its okay to update. I am new when it comes to the SGS so if I fail at it, I don't want to start crying. This is such a nice phone....so if it works, why break it?

Same - I am hessitant now to upgrade.
I had one of the original phones, it sucked, no GPS, etc. and it died on me.
I got a new phone, for free, my buddy works at bell, GPS works fine, and this one I think had the internal card failure b/c one day it just went black - reboot and the bottom lights light up but it doesn't boot in.
I did a recovery mode -> hard reset seemed to fix it -- tho i lost all my apps and contacts etc.
Now I haven't rooted or lag fixed, but I REALLY want froyo.
But what's the point ? I already had to do a reset b/c of internal card failures in the past, that means im almost guaranteed to lose this one if i upgrade,...

If your card is gonna die its gonna die no matter if you upgrade or not....Flashing just seems to speed up the corruption.
Thats a good question. People seem to be having big issues with this new Froyo update here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867157. I really hope Bell gets a fix for this new "firmware Froyo 2.2" that they just released.
If the Nexus S is the so similar to the SGS I9000M why dont we have Gingerbread (2.3) yet?
Again people. It's not the froyo update that's a problem it's bad internal SDcards. These phones were dying before froyo came out and without ever flashing anything.
If they're gunna die, they're gunna die. Flashing just helps to speed up the failures. SO flash away and hope it blows before your warranty is up.

If I was you I'd flash the crap outta your phone. If your black screen was due to a weak internal SD then it's gunna go. So flash it and hope it goes so you can get a new(repaired) one. Of course the wait time is a bit long right now for repairs. And there's no guarantee that the newly repaired one won't blow.
Damn this phone....

my phone upgrade went well..but i have occasional force closure on apps. Then one day it just hang using Msn Talk Pro and I had to pull the battery out to reboot and it never came back on - stuck after the bootup S logo. grrrr..
how long does the warranty repair usually takes?
Anyone in Vancouver Canada that are non Bell subscriber have any problem bringing it in? Which store do you guys go to? I will try the same store for hassle free repair job. Thanks

There's no way to know for sure. Some ppl seem to have a bunch of force closes bfore it dies and others just turn it on and it's dead.
The USB cord was removed from my phone in the middle of an Odin restore (it was stuck at factoryfs.rfs). Now the phone won't boot and it isn't recognized by my computer when plugged in. Did I find a way to brick this thing? Any help would be appreciated. This is my fourth Captivate and I'm sure AT&T is going to start to give me a hard time. Thanks.
build a jig or buy one on ebay. you need to get into download mode and reflash to sotck.

Try all 3 methods to get into download mode first
yes, you can try the key combo first. but as i know, build 1010 or later wont work for the key combo.
Got it back to d/l mode. Now it's stuck at factoryfs.rfs-same as last time. I'm finished with this phone. AT&T can send me another. This is what happened to the past two phones. Stuck on a Odin restore and can't get it up again.
Edit: Just booted up. That's a relief. Thanks.

If it had happened on more than one phone, you may consider looking at odin...maybe remove and reinstall our check your drivers or computer...just double check all of little stuff that might be so obvious that they are not obvious

so if your potentially bricking the phones, what do you tell AT&T that happened? and do they not ever check or whats the deal?
As far as I know at the wareenty centers they check for physical and water if they do attempt to boot as long as nothing looks custom they wont bother with checking the recovery or key combos samsung takes care of the rest they just want functional hardware..oh dont mention anything about modding. If anything syncing crashed is the best explaination. Tested.

Sorry I'm late getting back. My phone is up and running again. Got in to D/L mode and flashed back to stock. Got stuck on the AT&T logo, but used Odin one more time and it booted right up. The first time I brought in the phone, the tech took it to the display for 2 minutes and called the warranty dept for me. I think that it helped that the Chiefs playoff game was on. They didn't seem to want to be bothered! The phone rep asked about water and physical damage. No questions about modding. The second time I did it at home over the phone. Again, no questions about modding. I told the rep both times that I was trying to transfer music to the phone via Kies and it crapped out on me. It always help to play dumb and act like you don't know too much.

I had the same exact problem when i was just starting to mess around with roms and my biggest issue was the sequence that it took to flash properly. i kept opening odin then putting my phone in download mode and THEN plugging it into use as opposed to how it should have been which is holding vol up and vol down pressed then plugging in usb.

That's the weird thing. I'm somewhat new, but have been flashing my Captivate since Sept. When the original Cognition came out I was flashing daily. I think my problem was, it took longer than usual to flash to stock, I got impatient and didn't realize I could get to D/L mode by taking the battery out, holding power and inserting battery. I always used the button combo. Live and learn.
same problem
Ok i have the same problem as the original post stated, running odin and disconnected right at the beginning of the rom flash! this phone wont power up, and my jig (which i have used before) will not work! Is it done for!?
Ur last hope lays in adams Am I bricked thread, where u'll find an app that checks what state ur phone is in (linux or ubuntu needed)
nevermind, I tried harder and the jig worked, its one of the homemade jigs, where you cut up your charger, and use resistors to create the circut . . . . jankety but i got it to work thanks anyway though
Glad you got it, but I would buy a jig and keep it in a drawer. Just in case.
surprised it took this long, had counted myself one of the lucky ones.... even though i was one of the unfortunate saps whose phone came with the three button recovery disabled, (a two week trip to samsung for repair).... was running darky's rom 9.3 and various eaarlier versions since october with no problems... today google voice started force closing so i tried to reboot the phone and it would not boot up again... i went into recovery and tried a wipe, still no go.... then i tried to reinstall the rom, still no go.... when it is booting up it just keeps looping the loading screen and vibrates once, then pause, then three times... i can get into recovery and download mode.
anywhose my questions are this,
A) best way to determine that the SD is in fact bricked.....
B) best way to get a bricked SD card back to stock so i can send it back to samsung for warranty.
C) if i get it back fixed from samsung, should i try to off this piece of Sh*t phone that has given me, and others soooooo many problems. that is to say, has anyone who has had their phone fixed recently had their new SD card go corrupt again??
P.S. never buying anything samsung ever again, PERIOD!!, had a 30 inch monitor of theirs recently go bad as well, like i dont care if they cure cancer, bring peace to the middle east, and resurrect jesus!!! i still wouldnt buy a rememberance day poppy from them!!!!!!!
Do you know what bootloader was running when it bricked? ie was it JL2?
I'm on Darky's ROM since 9.2 and I've been flashing different stuff with 100% success rate... So far.
My girlfriend also bought a Galaxy S (the I9000, just for info) and me, considering myself a "veteran flasher" (but in real life, still being a tutorial-following guide monkey) told her "Hey, you know what - I can make your phone ten times better, just give it to me overnight".
So I prepared the phone... factory reset, etc. The 3-button combo didn't work (hmm, strange) but I looked around for a solution anyway - found one involving Odin, ADB and updating the bootloader, but since a lot of people bricked their devices this way, I skipped it.
I got the phone to boot into download mode via ADB and then started the guide to instal Darky's Ressurection Edition. Connected to Odin, the phone was recognized and added, then I started it and Odin spat out an ERROR message, then the phone was stuck at the "black screen of death" (a phone and a PC connecting).
So... why the hell did this happen?
I've already flashed my own Galaxy S so I've done this maybe even twice... got drivers, Odin, everything! What went wrong and can I even fix this or I gotta buy a new phone?
you can probably use a jig to get the phone back to download mode.
buy one on ebay or make one yourself. theres plenty of guides online for that.
as for odin having an error im thinking you might have a corrupt file? try downloading it again.
can you go into recovery mode or any 3 button won't work?
But why did you just dont installed the 3 button method which gives you the change to flash other roms e.g.
Yes you risk to brick but you also risk but in my mind much bigger to brick your phone without 3 button so if something went wrong you have the change to go with the 3 buttons to the recovery menu...

Try getting the battery out for 1-2 seconds, put it back in and then try getting into download mode manually by holding first volume down+home and then also the power button.
If you can get into download mode, which is something I've found not to be pretty easy to erase, as it's independant from boot settings and files, all is still OK.
Yeah, I'll be out in the morning to buy the mats for a JIG, found a pretty easy guide how to make one, with pictures and everything.
The files being corrupt is something I didn't even think about, I'll re-download them if/when I manage to get the phone working.
Battery pull didn't do the trick, left it out of the phone for 4 hours, no dice.
After all, the phone is still under warranty and was recently 2.1 untill my gf updated it. Maybe I can tell that it's her fault, messing up Kies update or what? Then I'll get a free service/replacement, but I'll need a solid excuse to tell them. Any ideas? (yeah I know I'm an awful person but I can't afford a second Galaxy S, and the thought of giving her *my precious* because of my stupidity is just as awful)
rolfmao you made my day bro, my gf just bought a SGS as well but she saw me almost crying with the bricks i created, so as soon as i asked her if i could update her phone
she almost kicked me in the nutsack.
building a jig is pretty easy, you just need to practice touching the correct pins and you will be good to go.
as for the odin, it happends....i bricked my phone so many times
i just forced download mode and then reflashed with THE SAME FILES and it worked
my guess is that the connection is interrupted or something...causing it to abort or fail
FYI: Bricking means turning it to a brick, you can't revert from a "bricking"... Bad flash, ok! Black screen, ok! Brick, hum... if you can "unbrick", well, that's not bricking my friend!
All this to say the SGS is ALMOST unbrickable! With Jig, download mode, ADB, etc, there's so many way you can undo/redo things right!
You can say a lot of thing about the SGS, but the thing is made for developpers and flashers!

Build a jig and do it yourself. Then if you run into trouble in the future - hey! you have a jig, no problem. Warranty situation is a bit iffy, sometimes they see that you screwed it up yourself....

Yeah, I know, but I read in another thread that if I get this screen AND can't get into download mode then I'm toast. That's why I used the word brick.
I decided I'll send her return the phone, equipped with her cutest and n00biest face so that they won't even think that there's a real idiot involved (me). And if they don't fall for that, I'll build a jig and try myself.
THIS IS WHY I HAVE NO GIRLFRIEND!!!

But man... I didn't think you could actually brick the SGS. I mean, I always screw my rom up somehow, but the 3 button combos always work... Guess I'm just lucky... I'll try to be more careful from now on lol.

LOL, np
Anyway, I just sent her to return the phone, maybe it's a common problem because the guy there didn't even listen to her explaining the crude story I made her tell ("PC froze and then rebooted itself while updating" - yeah right!).
They said it'll be ready next week (hopefully).
This also thought me a lesson - maybe even two.
1) Never try crazy stuff on a Galaxy S without 3 button combo working properly.
2) Always have a JIG ready for use
When she gets it back next week I'll see if the 3BC works and if it does - yeah, I'll try to flash a custom ROM again
Thanks for this highly amusing thread lol the moral is.....don't mess with the womans phone if you want to live AND love

Best I've heard all day
But I must ask - how the ... did you manage to talk her into returning the phone herself...?? If that would have been me screwing up my gf's phone, she wouldn't let me in the house until I had fixed the darn thing myself.
I gave her mine - already heavily tweaked and loaded it with games like Plants vs. Zombies and Let's Create! : Pottery (she just loves that game). Plus I equipped MY cutest and n00biest face when I showed up to tell her the *cough* results.
This made my day. Apparently I thought only girls can put on a cute face and disarm anyone. LOL!
Regarding the brick, what I did was to repeatedly tried doing the 3BC then held all of it until the brick icon goes to download mode. Held it for 5minutes. No jig needed! If you keep it held down for some time, the phone resets itself. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR SGS IS CONNECTED VIA USB!
Good luck!
Sent using this XDA App thing from my awesome SGS
i think this is why all flash posts say make sure 3 button combo is working before you start... but I have had to use a jig to get mine back from the brink/brick once, almost made me cry as i needed my phone in 2 hours to meet up with friends
Oh yea... you will have to let us know what they said when she took it back. I am curious if they ask questions about how it got there and if they believed her... don't want to make things difficult in there but I know some companies who have products that are highly customisable (if "hacked like this") are suspicious of most software related problems
But getting the soft-bricked phone back to a new state with a new ROM would have been a great gift while returning the phone!
Dont u think so?
The whole idea was to get rid of the stock firmware and flash something epic ( in my case - Darky's 9.2).
They didn't ask her anything at the service centre so I/we got lucky with that, and even better - I formatted the internal SD card before flashing so even if the phone isn't hard bricked there won't be any evidence of software modifications (because I rooted the phone to backup everything with TB and to be able to put it in download mode via ADB).
Next week I'll report what happened and if I finally managed to flash a custom ROM (if not, expect a new thread: "Can't believe I bricked my Galaxy S... again!")
