Hey guys, I updated my Galaxy S [GT-i9000] today to 2.2.1 via Kies. I managed to grab the firmware files during the update. A .tar archive containing the .rfs files and also the packed binary which Kies 'decrypted' and uncompressed, generating the .tar. I'm thinking it's possible to add a simple setuid root shell/su/something like that inside this official firmware. I've read around here that it's possible to mount rfs files on Linux and this should allow me to put my root shell. My questions are:
1.Can I flash these modified .rfs files with Heimdall, Odin or anything like it ?
2.Can I perform Kies updates after I do this operation ? (Does it checksum the firmware or something ?)
Thanks.
bump ! bump !
Last year i saved firmware via Kies update .
Saved as JP5_JP3_U_JP3.tar
Installed via Odin
Open Odin
- make sure you UNTICK Re-Partition Checkbox (which is the default choice)
- Choose "s1_odin_20100803.pit" as PIT
- Choose " the tar file you saved as PDA
- PHONE Use MODEM.bin
- Leave CSC blank
- Start Phone in Download-Mode
- Connect Phone via USB
- "Start" Flash using odin
- Goto Recovery mode (see image at bottom) and do Factory Reset / Data Wipe
- Reboot, and wait for full start up. Unplug phone from USB.
- Close Odin.
problems with modem after flash remove modem from tar file then flash tar and modem .

Hello friends
i have recently applied an update.zip file via recovery mode, and after that my phone doesn't turn on any more, it hangs on galaxy s screen and vibrates frequently.
i can go to recovery mode(that only has 4 selection:
reboot now--- apply sdcard:update.zip---wipe data/factory rest---wipe cache partition)
and i can go to downloading mode too, the file that crashed my phone was a part of call recorder application that i have installed, and then tried to apply the update.zip file, and in the page that describes the installation guide(that is in this website.....) has a recovery update.zip file that i think if i can apply the new file, the phone can turn on, the problem is that i can't replace the old damn update file with new one because i don't know how to do it with computer, i try to connect via usb but only when the phone is connected to phone that is in recover y mode, pc recognizes the phone(the phone memory and external sd card cant appear) and only "adb devices" command tells me that its recognized, but i can't copy and replace the new update file with adb command either. so can anyone help me to move and replace the new file via downloading mode or ordinary recover mode OR to install Clockworkmod when it's off??!!!
thanks....
Wipe Cache that fails Factory reset.
That fails flash stock rom via Odin pit 512 and repartition checked .

ok, my rom version is JPJPG, is this compatible with my rom? and please tell my how to use it, i know that i should use it via odinn, but in which part? (PDA or CSC or phone or pit?) and which selection should be ticked? (re-partition, auto reboot or f.reset time?)
thanks alot

How do I load the ROM, can make a tutorial? There is a possibility of colcorem to load directly through the Recovery?
no one answers....
Make proper back ups first.
Then go here and download heimdall suite 1.1.1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967175
Follow everything except the part where it says "Files you are going to flash on the tab". You dont need to download these files.
Instead you will need to download GB2.3.5 Galaxy Cubed zip file and unzip it. Inside the unzipped folder are the files you are going flash over to the tab using heimdall.
Files goes to following slot in heimdall:
DO NOT PUT FILES IN THE INCORRECT SLOT(you will brick your device)
cache.rfs > Cache
dbdata.rfs > Database Data
factoryfs.rfs > FactoryFS
param.lfs > Param.lfs
recovery.bin > Recovery
zimage > Kernel(zImage)
Click Start. When its finished your tab will reboot. After boot you need to wipe data and cache. Restore your back ups.
If you're unsure how to do any of this I recommend you find someone that can help. You dont wanna brick your device.
was installing jvq for darkyrom via odin and got the following errors below after the flash. now getting the same thing with the stock rom downloaded the jvt from sammobile.com flashed via odin rebooted to recovery and same errors please help im phoneless

Flash a ROM with 3 files. Generally all the firmwares with 1 file only miss the DBData file.
Why JVQ? There are many newer firmwares out there.
Use odin 1.85.
Pun in download mode (press down-vol + home +power together at phone off)
Download stock rom.
Use pit file and put it in PIT.
use CODE file and put it in PDA
use PHONE file and put in in phone.
use sgh-* file and put it in CSC.
mark repartition flag.
lean bootloader empty
flash it.
So, i rooted my original galaxy tab p1000 with odin3-v1.8, but when im in clockwork mod, and i want to install roms or WHATEVER thing i choose, i get an error similar to E: can't mount. Whether i try to clear cache or reset, it says this and i have no choice. It seems like a brick....ANYONE Help me, Much will be appreciated.
It seems like it was not rooted correctly. Did you run titanium backup after rooted?
Can u tell us what was the latest working firmware u had? FROYO,,GB? 2.2, 2.3.3, 2.3.6?
Anyways, Follow these steps carefully to fix almost all kind of softbrick:
1a. Download Fus Check Downloader 2.1 on your computer from url]http://fus.nanzen.se/[/url] , start it up and and downloaded a Firmware for your region. It will automatically decode the .enc2 file to.zip file
1b. Download this pitfile from following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=631856&d=1308653969
1c. Download this dbdata from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=631856&d=1308653969
2. Extract the .zip file generated from decoding file to a folder and I got tar.md 5 file.
3. Start Odin - put the .md5 to PDA
Put the pitfile from step 1b to the PIT
Check repartition. Leave everything else as is.
4. Go to download mode on the G-tab, connect to ur computer
and click start on Odin. It takes about 6 to 7 minutes to do the flashing.Once done flashing it will reboot but mostlikely you still have problems with your tab.
5. on your Odin, put the dbdata file from step 1c to PDA, leave everything else as is.
Reboot your tab to download mode, connect to computer, and click start on Odin.
6. Once done, reboot to recovery mode, do a factory reset wipe, and data cache wipe.
Reboot again, wait for about 5 minutes for the tab to boot, you should be all set.
Thx

Seems like the problem for me was resolved by following these instructions:

Thank you for your help too,
I installed CM10.1, and now I want to re-install my mobile company ROM back (Orange / Partner - Israel).
I found download here:
http://hotfile.com/dl/178646361/163ea0f/Samsung-Updates.com-GT-I9000_PTR_1_20111209152100.zip.html
But the file is a .Zip file.
How to flash it? from Odin (if yes, how)? from CWM?
Thanks.
Extract zip file. There might be a tar file to flash via odin

Have one .tar file and one .dll file.
how to flash it with Odin?
start odin - press reset
put tar file in PDA
put your phone in download mode (start phone with holding - vol down + home + power)
shut down kies and it's processess (if you have any)
connect to PC with USB cable (in odin you should see addedd!!) and hit start in odin.
and forget about dll file - you don't need it.
But if u're going back from cm10 you have to flash 3 file rom with pit and re-partition checked - there's a lot of tutorials on this forum
Thanks!
