ADP 101 (More questions than answers)

Im getting myself a ADP - just waiting for it to arrive and now it has made up a few questions in my mind - please dont bash the hell out of me if they have been asked before
First off, im not completly new to all this flashing, SPL etc, I would say i know the basic of flashing a WiMo...
So it kinda the same when you want to flash a "custom rom" to the G1, you need the first flash a custom SPL?
If thats true is it also true that the ADP have some sort of open SPL wich would allow any rom to be flashed, custom or not (Even WiMo)?
What are the downside of having a ADP rather than a T-mobile - besides the "small" problem with paid programs at market?
More questions prolly arises in the near future, but if anybody would be able answer thise Id be really glad

On Android there are two ways generally to flash a device: through the recovery (which checks against some Android crypto keys) and through the spl (either through htc-signed nbh or fastboot). Since you are getting an ADP, the device has the test-keys which mean you can flash whatever you want using the first method.

Yes, it is also referred to as the engineering bootloader (not technically the correct name, but close enough). It allows direct flashing of the entire flash from the spl using fastboot. You could not flash a winmo rom, since the fastboot protocol, afaik, does not allow changing the existing partitions in the onboard flash.

You can also modify the system software to show paid programs. That is no longer an issue. In fact if you flashed a T-Mo firmware, for all intents and purposes it would be identical to a G1. Only downside, I suppose, is you have to pay $400.

The downside to using adp images vs tmobile images is you lose some of the tmobiles specific applications. Currently they are myfaves, amazon mp3 store, and the IM app.
The current JF ADP 1.5 image, as well as the other cupcake images, do allow "protected" apps, so the marketplace restrictions aren't an issue anymore with ADP images if you flash one of the custom builds.

Ive now read a whole lot of the stickies in the development section - however i still have kinda few questions
So now that its an ADP and therefore have the engineering bootloader i dont need to flash a custom SPL - however both on the wiki and in the stickies the custom one are still recommended, is that only when youre on a "normal" g1 or what are the reason for me to flash a custom SPL rather than stick with the engineering?
As far as i recall from my WiMo days it wasnt too easy (Not to mention safe) to do a flash back to the orginal SPL once you have flashed a HardSPL - is that also the situation for "the common guy"?
How does flashing a custom SPL affect the warrenty?

The "HardSPL" for G1 doesn't work the same as for winmo. In the winmo world. HardSPL prevents other programs from normally writing to the SPL. Rewriting SPL would have to be done with a backdoor. In G1, the capability to restrict writing the SPL hasn't been implemented yet. The only difference between HardSPL and the Engineering SPL is the former is capable of accepting DREAIMG.NBH from all regions, as it spoofs a supercid.
Once one's SPL can perform fastboot nand flashing (which Engineering SPL can do) then there isn't much else that needs to be done.

Right now i want to make sure its the official rom - what do i need to look for? The info are as following:

That is the latest ADP1 firmware / baseband from HTC ( i just verified the version strings to the ones on my ADP1). You are good to go for now.

One modification to do is to A2SD (apps to sd). Doing an A2SD mod puts installed applications on the sd card giving you more space and fewer writes to your adp1's precious internal flash chips.

Currently I see very little to gain from the custom roms on the ADP1, I installed one of those custom roms to get closer to 1.5 before 1.5 was final and the custom rom seemed buggy and slower. The custom rom I used also defaulted to Chinese once installed that was tough to fix.
One Positive thing about custom roms though is that there is a custom ROM floating around that enables multi-touch. Android currently supports multi-touch but Google has disabled it in the source code (patent issues with Apple).
Since the ADP1 has the open boot loader, feel free to play around with custom images. The chances of bricking the ADP1 are much less ( as long as you are careful and flash things properly)

Help The Noobs

Will someone be kind enough for all the noobs out there and post a complete video of how to get from a completely stock firmware to (well in this case) this hero build, or the newest, latest, or best working hero build. While showing the order to flash radios, spls, and such using the ADB. It will help out a lot of people trust me. And from the looks of all the noobs right now youll have so many views, subscribers, followers or whatever your motive is. Please help noobs out.

If I were to root my phone with the latest Hero ROM that has flash playet 10, will I still need to upgrade the firmware to 1.5 or is this particular ROM built on 1.5 or what??
Also, does this latest Hero ROM have the famed HTC virtual keyboard or no??

Honestly idk but maybe someone will see this thread and answer that for you or you can start a new thread

So instead of using JF 1.31, simply use the Hero ROM of your choice, rename it as "update.zip" and put it on the root of your SD card. Turn off your G1, hold the HOME button and press POWER to get into the Recovery image. Press ALT+W (to wipe) then ALT+S (to flash the ROM).
EDIT: I forgot some very crucial information >_< IF you are going to Hero from Stock you do require a few other things. Namely the new Radio and the new SPL (depending on which Hero ROM you pick). Make sure though that whatever you do, you upgrade the radio first to avoid bricking your G1. Look at my signature for links to what you need, like the Radio, SPL etc.

Hero is basically Cupcake (1.5) but with a different interface created by HTC using custom code. So you just flash the Hero ROM of choice and that's it.

YouTube has plenty of view on rooting that's where I learned how to do it, they also have the files u need to root it right there for u to download. Just search it and u will find it. The guy who's vid I followed is tony moreno look for his bids. I don't recommend jumping from 1.1 to hero. Go from 1.0 to 1.1 then jump to 1.5. Also hero is built from 1.5. I myself have tried it but even with all the optimizing its not fast enough for me. It also has the famed HTC IME keyboard. I myself use JF 1.5 APD. With the Hero theme in the themes section with the HTC keyboard. Flash would be nice but it still has issues with speed and force closings. Like I said YouTube the rooting process and search around the thread for other stuff like and and how to use fastboot.

I forgot some crucial information, namely to upgrade the Radio first and that you might need to upgrade the SPL. Have edited my post.

That is in part something that threw me for a loop.
I've seen multiple vids for rooting but none of them seem to address this whole "Radio" issue that you brought up and the steps surrounding that. From what I have been reading this is the most important part.
I love this site but the type of people that post here are guys that already know what their doing in most cases and they speak and post as such.

Yeah, well...what can you do. I read over the posts here, watched youtube videos, and searched the web as well. Read and viewed everything I could until I couldn't take it anymore. Then...I tried. Tried and failed? No, tried and died.
MAN, I WANT HERO! I am more jealous with every video I see. I don't care if it's a little slow. It is pure Android beauty. But...
There is so much information out there, not just at this forum, but all over the net. And although there are many similarities between the instructions (I use that term loosely for some), many have different steps so it's hard to tell which to follow. Apparently taking what you feel are the best from each is not the way to go. Really, I'm not stupid about these things...well...
So, here is where I started; a T-Mobile G1 running the latest OTA 1.5 update and the 2.22.19.26I radio software. Used Parted Magic to create a 5GB FAT32 and a 1GB EXT2 partition on the SD card. I downloaded everything I though I would need or could find. The original boot and recovery img's along with RC29, RC30, and Cupcake zips. Then I got HardSPL and a bunch of files from Hayruko. I got JeseusFreke, CyanogenMod, and JACHero stuff. Hell, someone said to download the Telnet.apk and put it on the SD card as well. Did that. I found a great thread for installing the JACHero, but it did not go into rooting your phone first. Did that need to be done? I guessed it did. So I started there. Downgraded nicely to RC29. That was easy. Then even went through the telnet and terminal emulator steps. Then trouble. Which recovery.img to use? Some instructions reference the testkeys and some don't when rooting. Figured I would do it that way. So I went through those steps. Loaded CyanogenMods 1.3.1 and 1.33.2005 SPL on the SD card. Flashed (I thought) the recovery.img. Rebooted to get ready to install the SPL. Stuck at t-Mobile G1 now! They really do call it a brick for a reason.
So now that I got that off my chest, a few questions. First, I want to run HERO. I want it! However, I would like to make a request this time. Could someone please post step by step instructions for taking a stock G1 to the JACHero 2.3.4 release. Not just "flash the recovery and SPL" files. I would like more detailed directions. If you know of a good link to send me, please tell me. I thank you in advance for your time. I know it's a real pain in the ---, but I promise I will pass your knowledge along to another such as I!
A few questions first. I believe the steps are something like this:
1. Downgrade to RC29.
2. Copy recovery_teskeys.img and some recovery.img along with some SPL update.zip file to the SD card and "load" them properly. Which files should you use (does it matter), which order should you do it and how?
3. How do I do a Nandroid backup at this point? Do I need/want to?
4. Do I wipe now? Need to ever? Doesn't the image overwrite everything anyway?
4. Copy update.zip (the renamed JACHero 2.3.4 zip file) to the SD card and load it. Do you need to load any other image first other than JACHero 2.3.4.?
5. Enjoy HTC Hero goodness!
I know I am asking a lot, but I need the steps so I can replicate this easily. I am going to want to do this a lot based on what I see out there. Always something new to try and a lot of great developers out there. Thank you in advance for all of your time and effort. I promise to pass it along.

[Q] Few ROM and SPL Questions

I've got a few questions, hope no one minds answering. If it's a simple case of RTFM then lock the thread and trash.
1. I've rooted and am using the latest JF build but when I go to telnet I can't connect to localhost anymore. Is this normal?
2. I'm running stock SPL and Radio (not too sure what the radio is btw). Is it best I update before flashing anymore roms?
3. I'm wanting to flash to Cyanogen Mod rom, it looks a lot more complex than simply renaming the rom to update.zip then flashing. Is it safe to assume that there is a lot more work to do? (if so a general point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated).
I really appreciate any help.

1. I'm not sure as it has been some time since I last used JF's build I'm afriad...
2. Its advisable at the very least to upgrade your radio (look at my signature for a link). You can upgrade your SPL too providing you have flashed the latest radio FIRST and that you are on a PVT motherboard.
Boot into the SPL to find that out (turn off/reboot the mobile, Hold CAMERA+POWER). It should say at the top.
3. To use Cyanogen's ROM its like flashing any other ROM. Just make sure you have the latest Radio FIRST. Also I believe it works fine for non Apps2SD users so no need to partition your SD card etc to use it.

Unless it was updated while rooting it's probably "G1 Original SPL"

No worries digital, just do your usual pre-checks before flashing the SPL and remember Radio first ^_-
You'll enjoy the new features and performance improvements using the latest cooked ROMs out there. Most of the info is in my signature but you can also flash the new Recovery image too by Cyanogen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523558).
Not only can you create a Nandroid backup from there, you can also restore it too all from your mobile ^_^

Not to be an @ssh*le, but if you root your phone don't you already have the HardSPL? If you follow Koush's guide you were told to flash the HardSPL which isn't the stock SPL at all. Care to shed some light on this?

He could have had the engineering SPL, I remember having that briefly myself in the early days. The main thing is that he just wants to run Cyanogen's ROM so as long as he updates the radio and flashes the ROM without issues it should be fine. Unlike some Hero ROMs it doesn't require the latest SPL to create space for the ROM.
Granted though, its often always nice to have the latest stuff ^_-

Ok well if you DECIDE to update to the latest radio and SPL just go to my guide below and go to the second post. That will tell you how to install the radio and spl updates!

I'm on the HardSPL so I guess I don't need to bother updating that again. I didn't get to the point where it said to update to the newest radio.
Reading a bit further it also says that I can do a backup easily using adb which is already setup. At some point in the process it must have installed the things needed for nandroid backup. I think it was the recovery.img part.

Before I flash the latest radio is it safe to do this *after* updating the spl?

As a thumb of rule, always flash the radio first before the SPL and the ROM.

No you don't. Only once... then kind of keep an eye on the forum to see if better radio or SPL comes along. So far I had to update my radio once. What recovery image do you have (home+power), is it still JF1.43? You should update that to CM 1.4, you get a lot more flexibility with that... read up on it in development forum. All in all, unless you plan to install Hero anytime soon (and I personally don't recommend it, too slow and buggy) you should be good with (in that very order)
1. Flashing newest RADIO (Haykuro has it in the link you provided, only need to do it once and you already did it!)
2. Flashing HardSPL (you already did that too! no need to do it again)
2. Updating your Recovery Image (once more, this only needs to be done once)
After that - flash any rom you feel like at any time you feel like doing it.

I agree with everything borodin1 said. If you're on a 1.5 ROM you really should have the new radio already, but you can always go back and flash it. Afterwards you'll want hard SPL or haykuro's. Haykuro's is what you'll need for most HTC based ROMs (Hero, Rogers). Most people brick when flashing Haykuro's ROM because they don't read. Aslong as you have the new radio and a PVT phone (go to the bootloader - home + camera - and it should say PVT) you will be fine.

I ordered a G1 off Ebay recently, it has been shipped, but in the mean time, I was wanting to research the rooting and flashing process..It looks very involved...Very involved..lol
I've read the guides and such but was curious about the rom/radio bricking issues. With WinMo theres alot of radios..How about Android(My phone is an unlocked T-Mobile)?? Are there still known issues?? I like this rom http://lb.vg/fVl3w
Are the guides for rooting on here currently up to date(I think they are, and they probably are)?? Do I have to root to flash a new rom on there(I think I do)??
Sorry for the n00bish questions, but I really don't wanna kill my phone.
Can all bricks be fixed via the user??

First root (did it yesterday for the first time, phone was rooted when I got it).
You need root for certain apps, for installing another spl, custom roms.
Root installs recovery (if I remember ok).
Upgrade spl from stock to 1.33.2003 (zip file in recovery). Now you can use fastboot (safer!).Reboot in fastboot and flash first another recovery, then another radio (2.x) radio (needed for spl 1.33.2005), reboot again, go to fastboot and flash the dangerspl 1.33.2005 (or use MTDpartitions, but I got problems with it). Then flash roms.(no need for the old hardspl).
Flash not supported(arm incompatible).
Bricks can only be fixed with an JTAG, so be carefull (always wait) ! ROMS can't brick your device, only the officials can (which contain spl and radio).
Read for flashing the spl's (if you have rogers(canada) it's different).

Idk what this user means by saying that flash isn't compatible with the arm processor.
But yes android 2.2 supports flash all the way to flash 10 but on the g1 I don't think it would be so good on 528mhz because flash is pretty bloated on system resources. But flash videos are fine hulu runs fine for me.

Should I do any sort of formatting or partitioning on my SD card or just let the G1 do it??
I've got an 8gig SDHC Class 4 card also.
I've also been reading about J-Tagging the G1..Theres an adapter on here http://miniurl.com/49008 and it's 20USD for the adapter but I think I have to heek it up to an Omnia Repair box..Is that right?? This video http://miniurl.com/49009 shows em hooking one up to a white box..and the only white box on there site is for the Omnia Repair one and it's 229 Euro's(304USD).
Does the first reply have the correct steps for rooting my phone?? Is that for all versions. I'm not sure if mines a R29 or lower.

[Q] CM Radio on Stock rom?

I know this question is probably incredibly n00bish, but bear with me.
I want to flash CyanogenMod 6.1RC on my Nexus One. Right now I am running Stock FRG83 froyo.
I recently re rooted with SuperOneClick and followed by checking out the CM wiki to find out what I need to do to get CM on my phone. It had a note saying that I must flash a new radio to my phone.
This is different from a few other threads I have read on the matter where they just instruct the user to flash the CM and GAAPS zip files.
If I am required to flash the radio, will the radio also be compatible with the stock froyo rom? I will probably go back to stock whenever Gingerbread is released to try that out, and I don't want to have any problems backtracking.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That radio is the froyo radio, last I checked. I don't know how superoneclick whatever works. If it involves a downgrade, it may have downgraded your radio, so you should go ahead and flash the recommended radio. But you can always go back to stock; if stock builds require a certain radio, they generally ship with it. Here at XDA, we like to remove the radio from OTA builds, in case people want their own, or don't want the risk of flashing the radio unless necessary. (you should always do a md5 check on radios before you flash them, to make sure the download isn't corrupted).
Oh, and forget super-click-whatever root. Seriously, just fastboot oem unlock. Less likely to run into trouble that way, and if you're going to be hacking your N1, you should want the sdk (or at least adb & fastboot) anyway. mmmmkay?

From what I've gathered, SuperOneClick uses the RageAgainstTheCage method of rooting. I don't know what that entails, but it seems to be generally accepted around here.
I just got my N1 3 months ago, and I've heard of people having problems with the power button early on. I plan on waiting to unlock the bootloader for at LEAST another few months. I know that HTC has a history of taking phones back and honoring the warranty even after the phone is unlocked, however I just don't want to take the chance on a phone I paid close to 600 bucks for. That was my entire summer job salary (broke college student reporting in here )
As much as it may not have seemed like it, I do know how ADB and fastboot work. I'm just cautious. (I actually rooted my N1 using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710842 which got me fairly acquainted with the SDK).
Thanks for the information though, I appreciate it and will keep it in mind.

You don't have to flash anything. Your radio after 2.2.1 upgrade is 5.08 - which is fine.
