I've got a few questions, hope no one minds answering. If it's a simple case of RTFM then lock the thread and trash.
1. I've rooted and am using the latest JF build but when I go to telnet I can't connect to localhost anymore. Is this normal?
2. I'm running stock SPL and Radio (not too sure what the radio is btw). Is it best I update before flashing anymore roms?
3. I'm wanting to flash to Cyanogen Mod rom, it looks a lot more complex than simply renaming the rom to update.zip then flashing. Is it safe to assume that there is a lot more work to do? (if so a general point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated).
I really appreciate any help.
Thanks
1. I'm not sure as it has been some time since I last used JF's build I'm afriad...
2. Its advisable at the very least to upgrade your radio (look at my signature for a link). You can upgrade your SPL too providing you have flashed the latest radio FIRST and that you are on a PVT motherboard.
Boot into the SPL to find that out (turn off/reboot the mobile, Hold CAMERA+POWER). It should say at the top.
3. To use Cyanogen's ROM its like flashing any other ROM. Just make sure you have the latest Radio FIRST. Also I believe it works fine for non Apps2SD users so no need to partition your SD card etc to use it.
Hope that helps.
Stock SPL? do you mean HARDSpL?

Unless it was updated while rooting it's probably "G1 Original SPL"
Thanks NeoBlade, I'll update the radio and spl tomorrow then probably try and get nandroid running so I've got a backup in case anything goes wrong.
No worries digital, just do your usual pre-checks before flashing the SPL and remember Radio first ^_-
You'll enjoy the new features and performance improvements using the latest cooked ROMs out there. Most of the info is in my signature but you can also flash the new Recovery image too by Cyanogen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523558).
Not only can you create a Nandroid backup from there, you can also restore it too all from your mobile ^_^
Not to be an @ssh*le, but if you root your phone don't you already have the HardSPL? If you follow Koush's guide you were told to flash the HardSPL which isn't the stock SPL at all. Care to shed some light on this?
He could have had the engineering SPL, I remember having that briefly myself in the early days. The main thing is that he just wants to run Cyanogen's ROM so as long as he updates the radio and flashes the ROM without issues it should be fine. Unlike some Hero ROMs it doesn't require the latest SPL to create space for the ROM.
Granted though, its often always nice to have the latest stuff ^_-
Ok well if you DECIDE to update to the latest radio and SPL just go to my guide below and go to the second post. That will tell you how to install the radio and spl updates!
Good luck!
Indeed ^_^ And once that's done, perhaps change the title to SOLVED so people know. We shall have to wait for digital to get back to us about it.
This is the guide I used:
http://haykuro.theiphoneproject.org/?page_id=35
Sorry alritewhadeva:
I'm on the HardSPL so I guess I don't need to bother updating that again. I didn't get to the point where it said to update to the newest radio.
Reading a bit further it also says that I can do a backup easily using adb which is already setup. At some point in the process it must have installed the things needed for nandroid backup. I think it was the recovery.img part.
Thanks for the great link Nephron, I used it before to setup adb on my netbook (running win7 on my main machine).
Before I flash the latest radio is it safe to do this *after* updating the spl?
Thanks for all the great help, I really appreciate it.
As a thumb of rule, always flash the radio first before the SPL and the ROM.
Tell us how it goes ^_^ If you've managedto do it, could you please edit the title then to add SOLVED? Good luck.
Soo do you have to flash the radio and SPL everytime you want to flash a rom??? i already have the latest radio, i just want to make sure i dont make a mistake

No you don't. Only once... then kind of keep an eye on the forum to see if better radio or SPL comes along. So far I had to update my radio once. What recovery image do you have (home+power), is it still JF1.43? You should update that to CM 1.4, you get a lot more flexibility with that... read up on it in development forum. All in all, unless you plan to install Hero anytime soon (and I personally don't recommend it, too slow and buggy) you should be good with (in that very order)
1. Flashing newest RADIO (Haykuro has it in the link you provided, only need to do it once and you already did it!)
2. Flashing HardSPL (you already did that too! no need to do it again)
2. Updating your Recovery Image (once more, this only needs to be done once)
After that - flash any rom you feel like at any time you feel like doing it.
Hope that helps, good luck!
I agree with everything borodin1 said. If you're on a 1.5 ROM you really should have the new radio already, but you can always go back and flash it. Afterwards you'll want hard SPL or haykuro's. Haykuro's is what you'll need for most HTC based ROMs (Hero, Rogers). Most people brick when flashing Haykuro's ROM because they don't read. Aslong as you have the new radio and a PVT phone (go to the bootloader - home + camera - and it should say PVT) you will be fine.

I just tried to install the newest Haykuro SPL on my rooted G1, and now it stays at the T-Mobile screen. I can access the recovery utility, but when I press Home and Back to restart it just goes back the recovery menu..Any help?? Can I apply the offcial cupcake update?
First, please use the search feature of the forums and do plenty of research before attempting to mod your phone next time.
In recovery try wiping (alt+w) then reboot, If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas, search will probably return useful results as I've seen quite a few threads pertaining to issues with this SPL.
No my phone was already modded, it worked fine when I wrote over JF's 1.51. But when I tried to use this SPL it didn't work. I need to reflash over JF firmware for it to work. But I don't have a MicroSD Card Adapter, damn..
Can the G1 access via USB by putting it in BootLoader mode, or something??
I think(am no way certian tho) that you can access the sd via adb shell while in recovery mode, you'll need to do some looking into it tho. If I were you first thing tomarrow I'd pick up one of these even if you do manage to fix it by then. I use mine alot due to funking things up with modded themes and what not.
EDIT
Got it working, I reflashed it with JF's newest build. I wonder what I did wrong though when I tried flashing the latest Haykuro's SPL. I want to go to the newest Hero build but I am scared I might mess up my phone again.
Good to hear. I'd do alot more research before going any further. SPL's are where bricking turns from nearly impossible to easy as pie. Check out all the brick posts to see what NOT to do. Can be very helpful info.
ps. next time for pete's sake put something more useful than "help.." in the title of your thread.
First things first, check if you did get the spl to load. Turn off your phone and hold camera button and power. The screen that comes up should tell you what SPL you are using.

You didn't do anything 'wrong'. Flashing a new SPL repartitions your phones internal memory, destroying your ROM, thus requiring a ROM reflash after the SPL.
Honestly, what are you doing flashing a SPL when you do not understand what it does or how it works?
Excuse me Mr. Perfect. I didn't know that I had to reflash a ROM right on top of flashing the new SPL. Thus if what you are saying is true, I should have the new SPL than since I reinstalled the JF Rom?

Not trying to be a ****, but this is how people end up with bricks. Believe it or not, I'm actually trying to save you from doing that.
And yes, if you flashed the new SPL then JF's (or any ROM, really) than you still have the new SPL.
I know what you mean, I thought I had bricked it last night because of the SPL install. Alright I checked and indeed do have the new SPL. What ROM do you recommend using, that doesn't require Apps2SD as I cannot even use without a Class 6 MicroSD Card? JF's ROM is pretty bland, if you know what I mean.
wipe and re-flash the rom you want and please click the link in my sig
Thanks but what ROM do you recommend that doesn't require Apps2SD to run good and looks cool and customized? Does Cyanogen's require Apps2SD to run properly?

yes a2sd works on 3.4.
but if you would like to know more about Cyanogen's rom... click the link to it!
also click the other link i have
Aight, one more question. Does it require Apps2SD to run properly though? Or can I install it and expect it to run good without Apps2SD ?

that was two questions btw...
1. NO!
2. YES!
LoL, sorry I meant two . Thanks for the help, I'll try The Dude's Cupcake 1.3RC1 first, and if I don't favor it I'll try Cyanogen's.
First of all forgive me if this question as been asked a million times but to be honest I'm finding the Dream section a mess.
Now onto my question.... I've rooted my G1 and I'm currently running JF 1.51 with hero skin, now I'm I correct that I will always be rooted as long as I stick to custom roms?
The other thing is when I go into recovery mode I get a message at the top of the screen something like "Unable to find /system/command/recovery.cmd" am I correct that means I'm unable to proform backups? which is no big deal for me.
Finally whats the deal with this new spl, do I really need it to run a hero ported rom? I only ask because in all my years flashing windows phones the spl is something you should flash once and leave alone to avoid errors that can brick your phone.
Yes you will always be rooted. Not really sure on the recovery thing...You might want to try to fix that by flashing another recovery image. Yes you need the new spl to run the hero ROM since its HUGE

Thanks for the fast reply, as for the recovery thing like I said I would never back anything up and restore it anyway (I've always started afresh with every new rom)
Now going back to the spl thing.... Ive already updated my radio to the latest so when I do finally go for a hero rom and do flash my spl is the new spl a custom one which will allow me to reflash back down to a non-hero rom? or do I have to go back to the orginal hardspl first?
The new SPL was released by haykuro and it allows you to have about 30 more mb of space on your system partition. It still allows you to flash non-hero ROMs as well as hero ROMs. Sorry for the slow response >.>
Thanks alritewhadeva everything is clearer now.
I have a G1 running CM 4.2.9 with RAs recovery and want to try some new roms.
I have downloaded the proper radio update and the hard spl
Do I install the radio and spl before the roms and do I need to do it every time
or is there another way
Please could someone give me the best way to install a rom and make it run its best.

Wait your flashing the hard spl? Why not go all the way and do the Haykuro spl?
Adn it goes radio>spl>rom in that order. And it needs to be done once, after that the spl and radio stay until you want to update them again, but why would you do that?
thanks
thank you sir.
I bought a G1 2 days ago and i've been reading a lots of tutorials on how to root the phone, i have hacked/Modified every phone i've had so far (Motorola/Sony Ericsson/Nokia) and i would like to do the same with my G1 (That;s why i bought it for) the problem is that every tutorial i see wants me to downgrade to RC29 which isn't complicated but the problem is that it has the DMD64 update.
1- Is the rooting process the same for DMD64 or do i need something special to downgrade? i read about the goldcard but i also heard it was not necessary all the time.
2- Since this is my first time rooting , is there a way to make sure i don't brick my phone? like making a backup of the OS or whatever i need to fix it in case i brick it.
3-What are the latest/best files to root it things like Recovery, ROM, SPL (i don't fully understand what this is and how it is different from the recovery)
Thank You.

1: I have no idea if the rooting process is the same for DMD64 or not, but I do not see why it would be any different. But, I could be wrong. I was lucky enough to have RC29 when I purchased mine.
2: The only thing that you can do to make sure you do not brick your phone is to FOLLOW EACH STEP CAREFULLY! Do not skip steps, or add your own. This mainly applies to flashing the Radio and SPL. If you f*ck that up, you're bricked, heh.
3: This confused me at first as well.
What is a SPL? The SPL, or Second Program Loader, in conjunction with the IPL comprise a device's bootloader. Aside from bootstrapping Android, the bootloader also fulfills various diagnostic functions. One of these functions is the manipulation of data in the device's internal flash ram. Depending on the SPL installed, the user can apply a signed NBH file, flash nand images, and more. Note that the SPL is installed and operates independently of the Android build that runs atop it.

The recovery is kind of like pressing F8 when you are booting into Windows. It lets you make changes to your system, w/o booting the the complete Operating System (The Android OS in this case). Using the recovery menu, you can flash new ROMs, format your SD card, enable the USB Mass Storage so you can see the SD card within windows, do a factory reset on the device, open up a terminal to manually input commands, perform a backup of your device (you can back up most everything on it) which allows you to restore from that backup if you mess something up.
But, then there is your FastBoot screen as well. FastBoot is where you need to be to flash your SPL and Radio. I am not 100% sure as to the correct order of the flashing off the top of my head, but google around (or simply search this forum), and you will find all the info you need.
Not all ROMs require you to have the "Danger/Haykuro/Death SPL" though. Many of them will work on a stock SPL. However, if you do feel the need to try one of the ROMs that require you to use the Death SPL, you can find all the information about it here: http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/SPL.
Good luck with your new G1, and do NOT be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Nobody likes to see one of these devices get bricked
Thanks a lot for helping me I thought that the recovery was the f8 in a computer too but I still have my doubts about the spl and the radio. I'll try to root my phone tomorrow i'll give you guys an update after I get to 1.5.
Wish me luck xD.

Remember, always RADIO BEFORE THE SPL. If you do decide to mess with SPL, make sure to flash engineering (or hard) first, and then flash Danger/Death SPL thru fastboot. This eliminates 99% chance of the brick.
Good luck.

Lol how is he going to know what fastboot/adb is? OP, don't mess with the SPL and radio until you know what your doing. Flash a rom like cyanogen or Enom's AOSP if you don't want to mess with them.
Ok I've done it i am running 1.5 now so if a person comes asking about DMD64 (G1) now you know what to say. You don't need a goldcard or something else just the dreaimg.nbh and there is nothing to worry about.
I still don't fully understand the SPL and Radio part so i'll keep reading until i am ready to use a custom ROM.
so just root DMD64 the normal way?
I have been trying to flash the CM7 Rom to my G1 and continue to get the same error messages... I tried uploading a pic but the app wouldn't let me, so I will try and get the pic posted asap

what is your radio/spl?
also have you flashed many other roms before?
Please using following combination for Radio and SPL. Also note, flash radio first and then SPL otherwise G1 will not boot. Also make sure you have Clockworkmod recovery for CM7. This recovery helps for smooth flashing for CM7.
update_2.22.28.25_S - Radio

OK, this might be sorta a strange question, but this looks to be the best place to ask it.
Will the Dream be bootable if you flash only the Radio and SPL, leaving untouched the stock Android 1.6?
While I am a Linux geek, I am new to android and prefer to take things one step at a time. That explains why I have a Rooted dream with Amon RA with the stock 1.6 backed up with nandroid.

never tried, theoretically it should be as if you did a factory reset and you would just use your recovery to replace anything lost. but if you want to be safe maybe someone who has will chime in.
besides the point go ahead and flash a new rom, even if you stick with 1.6 firmware the developers have come out with much superior roms over the stock android. if you want only 1.6 try super d or super csdi
ok so i decided to test this out, updating a g1 to the 2708+ radio/spl and not flashing a new rom -------- stuck on g1 boot screen, hit call+menu+power then hit home to reboot to recovery, reflashed rom and gapps, rebooted, now everything is good as can be, so to answer your question --- yes it appears you need to flash a rom after you update your radio/spl
