[Q] Go from stock 2.1 to custom ROM - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I apologise if this has already been recapped elsewhere but I am really struggling to find an solution that I can actually use.
Basically, my partner has a SGS GT-i9000 running 2.1 update-1 and it has become unusable due to lagging and short battery life.
I have a Desire HD which I have managed to root and install CM7 on and I want to be able to help her install a custom ROM. Based solely on looks I would like to get her Darky's ROM.
I have searched around the web and have come up short as to how to go from basic handset all the way to having a custom ROM installed. Can anyone advise the easiest and safest way to get this done?
Again, apologies if this is the wrong forum or if this is answered elsewhere.

Basically follow the instructions in the individual rom post FAQs etc
2.2.1 may be available from the Kies update function for your phone .

do you need to have a firmware already installed like jm8 for instance or can you
just wipe my phone and install from fresh .
thank you
Just flash JPY from samfirmware.com as a PDA without a PIT file selected.
can i do it even if my galaxy doesnt have a firmware already installed i was wanting
to do it from a fresh wipe then just install the jpy

i would suggest to flash Darky's Rom. it's easy and you don't need to use odin or heimdall. plus its a really fast Rom!

or do i need one already on the phone i have read on a lot of post people saying

whats the best way realy

Kies 2 is the easiest way........... If you want to flash to a custom 2.2 I suggest reading through these forums for a few good hours.
How does your phone work if you have no firmware .???
Suggest A Froyo update is normally via Kies . Why do you need to flash ??
Suggest B If you are flashing custom roms please please read all the posts regarding flashing and save breaking your phone .
Suggest C questions go in the Q& A section not development .

<----- says the best way to flash FroYo if you are a woman is to wear a t-shirt with FroYo stencilled.
Seriously, if you want an official 2.2, try one thats correct for your country & region. General section has a sticky.
If you are adventerous & want to experiment, try one of the MODDED ROMs available. There is a sticky here in dev.
If you want a 2.2.1 without ant modifications, try to search for it here in dev with a title [MOD][CSC] or something or try my desi link in my signature. I will search & add links later.
PS : how old are you?

Search Forum
ROM Download

just flash CF-Root via odin, then clockworkmod, create a backup and try the romkitchen or darkys rom. best roms imo
But in this tutorial : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939752
Just tells how to falsh custom firmwares, how do i do to install darkys rom for exemple ?
I need to install first a custom firmware ?

Well the simple answer is look at page one of Darkys posts where oddly enough the instructions are written as how to flash his rom .
Bit of advice dont flash until you really understand what you are doing unless you want to join the IBSGS club short for i bricked my galaxys an now it does not work .

Shouldn't that be IBMSGS club?
This is becoming way too common. Flashing before reading.
I dont want to brick my phone, if that happens i will cry like a b*** xp I will do step by step
You should look out for Darky's ROM, best ROM out there! It makes your SGS so damn fast
They even have a great step by step tutorial on how to root/flash your SGS. Don't have the link by hand, you should look out for it ^^
One advice: Never ever flash the official 2.2 Update from Samsung. My phone was nearly turned complete useless because I had since then terrrible performance problems...

[Q] 2.3.3 ROM

Hi,
I install Samsung Leak ROM 2.3.3.
And I would like to install new custom ROM.
Can you recommend me what ROM I should install and what are the steps ?
I have Galaxy S I 9000
Best advice for you is to look around the Development section at what ROMs are available. All are very well made and the threads for them are usually very informative and give easy to follow instructions to allow you to flash the custom ROM.
You should be careful posting questions like this, some people may flame you a bit as they'll tell you that you should just look into the threads and learn

They post that stuff because someone who doesn't know how to get back to 2.2.1 shouldn't have installed 2.3.3.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
should help you out abit mate, remember any 2.3.3 will not be completly stable,, im on darkys 9.3 Rom with 2.2.1 i think i wil wait till Gingerbread is official and a good rom like Darkys V10 is final before i make the jump.
Official gingerbread as of now .So it will be in the rom kitchens soon and adapted by the end of the week .
Best rom choice build your own in the rom kitchen .

Or read the threads on roms in Development and read the help posts on the forum to see which roms continually break phones .

Gingerbread JP9 stock to overcome jupiter

Hi,
I have updated to JP9 uk stock rom using kies. I would have to say that I am not that happy with it (freezes, seems slow compared to 2.2). Having read about overcome, I think it is time to give it a go. Overcome Jupiter requires root, it does not seem possible to root (using superoneclick). So how do I get there?
Do I use CF Root, then overcome - has anybody else done this? Is there anything I should be watching out for?
cheers

First read the faq posted in question & answer section!
Then read the guide for overcome rom you'll understand everything!

Thanks lordrdx666,
I assure you that I have read many posts, and searched the forum, both on rooting stock gingerbread and flashing overcome.
My research has shown that stock gingerbread can not be rooted by superoneclick and that many users are searching for a solution. Also that some who have flashed CF-root have had "bricks". I have also checked the overcome site, here is a quote:
Your Tab must be rooted. (Please look for SuperOneClick root method as it’s usually the safe bet! But for more information on rooting, please refer here:
It refers to superoneclick.
So, as I suggested in my post I think the only option I have is to bitr the bullet and flash CF-Root, then follow the overcome steps. BUT, as far as I can tell there are not many that have gone from stock JP9. So I asked if this is my best option, has anybody else done it and what things should I avoid, this will be the most advanced things I have done with the tab, and yes I am a bit scared and worried about breaking it.
Just looking for help, thanks
Just read the team overcome guide. Don't do any other flashes until you read! The reason your JP9 is laggy is because you didn't upgrade correctly.
When you follow the guide exactly you will have root and a smooth tab.
Hi Rangercaptain,
I think my post may be misunderstood.
I have updated to JP9 via kies. It is the stock rom I am using, and it is that, that I am wanting to change.
I would like to go to the overcomne rom (having read about the different roms, this seems to be very well regarded (discussion on stock vs custom rom).
Do make this change overcome guide states I need root, superoneclick will not root gingerbread.
So the only way that I can see to get there is to root the tab using CF-root, then try to go to overcome.
As I have not used any other tool (if you can call kies a tool), I am nervous about doing these flashes.
My questions, therefore, are:
Have I got the best approach or is there a better way?
Has anybody else done the same sequence and can offer any experience related info
When I can get the confidence to go ahead I will be very diligent in following the instructions.
cheers

Well maybe you did read many posts, maybe you did search the forums. Sometimes there is a lot of reading to do and people tend to miss things. That's also why developers and other senior members complain about noobs asking questions that have been answered before and adding to all the posts that people have to search through. This ultimately affects both you and I and everyone else that has to read through all of the posts to find their answers, and it also makes noobs hesitate to ask questions so that they don't get a verbal lashing by senior members even though they had a valid reason to post.
So you know, your question was answered on post #2 by Lordrdx666, it was a very helpful post.
I'm also more than happy to help others on this forum, and i'm not being a d!ck, but so you know, here is what i came up with on my first search using good old google
try what i did to get results by clicking here
not sure if it applies to you but it should get you somewhere

Help Please

I am running Overcome Kratos and would like to go back to Froyo, specifically the European rom that I first flashed to enable phone features on my AT&T galaxy tab. Can I just go through the same process i went through the first time I flashed from stock or do I have to do something special because im running 2.3 now? I dont want to run into bootloader trouble.
Thanks
Firstly, please dont use ridiculous titles like "Help please" that does not describe your topic in any way to people who are browsing pages or using search and searching topic titles. Titles are supposed to be descriptive of topic, Its in the rules and to be honest its should be just plain common sense.
To answer your question, Just follow the guide linked to froyo overcome topic. All you need to do is use the safe-restock package and then flash rom.

why do u wanna go back to froyo just flash safestock gb5 in overcomes site and youll be fine
I am tring to go back because I am having compatibility issues with some apps and games in Gingerbread.
Isn't GB5 safestock a gingerbread rom? Will it be safe to flash the Russian Froyo rom over GB5 safestock?
