I have a NC with 1.1 firmware rooted with auto-nooter 3.0. I've installed many apps, I'm very pleased, and have experienced no problems. That said, the Froyo update that B&B is supposedly rolling out in April will probably be a good thing but I wouldn't want to install it until something like auto-nooter is available for the updated system.
My questions are:
1) based on previous firmware rollouts will it be possible to not have the update install automatically?
2) once the update is installed will it unroot the Nook?
3) going from 2.1 to 2.2 will it be possible to backup then restore apps on the new system once it has been rooted?
I don't know that anyone has all the answers but I'm wondering how people here with rooted Nook Colors plan on preparing for and handling the update.
Thanks
There are a couple threads explaining how to prevent auto update. Sorry for not linking I'm on my phone. As far as restoring apps you should be fine as long as you don't restore system data. It would be best to not accept update until someone post a rooted flash-able

Your mileage may very, but I 'gathered' them up and posted the various ways to prevent update a few days ago in this thread. I think I have heard, at various times, that all worked and all didn't so, take it all with a grain of salt.

Ill take 2 and 3 since 1 has already been answered.
2: Yes if you update you will no longer be rooted, Best to hold off updating till they have a root method for the new Rom.
3: Yes, Install Titanium Backup. Backup all your Apps. and transfer the backup folder from your SD card to you computer, once you have updated your rom and rooted again, Reinstall Titanium Backup, Transfer you backup folder back to your SD card and restore you app+data.
This will not only restore your Apps, but any saved data the apps had, such as game progress.

I have a new (2weeks) samsung GT-I9003 which kies report a new firmware update & before doing that want me to take backup but it will only backup my contacts/sms etc. how do I backup my installed apps as I have not yet rooted my phone, I searched the forums & found a way to root but got to know that even rooting will loose my apps/data so what should I do first?
I need the following things
I am testing various apps to find the best ones which I will using long term so as of now lot of install/uninstall hapening, after few days once I settle I want to update new firmware but should I root before that or after updating to new firmware.
Does rooting remains rooted after new FW updates in future?
Once rooted I can install apps like Titanium, unrooted I can't use Titanium yet to back up my apps & its data so its a catch 22 situation for me & atleast once I will have to loose my apps data but this time I should do it once for all so I can streamline future updates.
Hope some one can answer this.
If you update with kies you wont loose anything, if you update custom roms(for the first time) you will loose your apps and data.
Thats a good news for me, so should I 1st update the firmware via kies then root it as 2nd step?
I took backup & then started the firmware update, it downloaded a small file showed 100% complete & then strangely it opened another windows & its now downloading a huge file of 400-500Mb...........is the firmware that big?
The downloading is going on past 10 mins on 1mbps connection.
Finally it gave error in mid way I assume that something happened & made the usb connection loss, I got these screen shots & the phone is now hung displaying "downloading do not turn off the target"
What should I do, need help?
Since i did not get any answer i took the battery out & then plugged in again the phone booted fine.
I now have rooted my phone, if i update the firmware will I need to root it again?

depends on the firmware, most custom roms have root already build in
I have a rooted NC with stock 1.1 firmware. Im just wondering what's gonna happen when the 1.2 update comes down? Will have to re-root it? If I do then I guess we'll have to wait until someone figures it out and produces a new boot image right? If so then I might not update until that's figured out.

If you don't do anything, it will update and break root and you will have to wait till that is rooted, HOWEVER! There are tutorials out there that have step-by-step on how to disable the updater, if that's what you want.
If I disable the updater, is it simple to re-enable later when the new rooting process has been figured out?
I would like to know also. Since the new update is supposed to come out by the end of the month I just thought I would keep WiFi off at all times until I researched the best solution.

Will 3rd party Apps you've purchased still be present on the device and usable?
Apparently, you just have to rename /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip to /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak
Some people seem to have still gotten updates after renaming though. It's a little vague and some of the info might be outdated. This could potentially throw a wrench in a lot of people's tablets.
Your purchased apps are stored by google. Yes they will still be there. I actually had purchased items from my phone show up on my book...quick download and good to go.
Now, after an update, you may lose them until it's rooted again...

yeah, if you let the update go through, I can almost say for sure you'll lose access to the apps until you root again and probably redownload them)
To be safe get "Titanium Backup" and Purchase it's ProKey from the Market. Using it you can Batch Backup your Apps and App Data. Then if anything happens you can always Recover your Apps. (Batch Restore needs Pro Key)
For help using Titanium Backup read this Lifehacker article:

If i update it breaks root will I still be able to use the apps that don't require superuser? Meaning can I still use what apps are already in the Nook
sent from my nook color
Hi all,
Hope this is the right one of the four forums to ask this!
I used Auto-nooter x.25 to root my Nook Color to 1.01 three months ago. Has been working great, but I'm running into more and more websites that I want to see which use Flash, and I haven't been able to get Flash Lite working at all.
So now I've decided I want to upgrade to the 1.1 rooted ROM, but I've installed a whole bunch of apps. Is there a way to upgrade to v1.1 easily without losing all the apps and stuff I've installed?
Robert
download titanium backup and backup all your apps and data. After rooting restore them back. Howevre note that rooting alone will not get you access to flash sites and flash videos, either wait for Barnes and Noble's supposed upgrade or use one of the custom ROMs such as CM7
OK so here's my situation:
I got the official Verizon upgrade from 2.3 to 4.0 back in August. Since then, my phone has been giving me major issues. I won't get into them, because I know I just need to do a factory reset and it should fix everything.
I have some experience with bootstraps and custom roms on the Droid 1 and Droid 2, but it's been so long. I've done some research, but could still use some guidance.
The phone was rooted on 2.3 but the 4.0 update took that off.
My questions are:
- Can I make a nandroid (or similar) image of the system in its current state, before it's re-rooted with custom roms?
- Is CM9 in any kind of final stage?
- What's the best SMS backup utility that will PRESERVE THE MESSAGE TIMESTAMPS upon restore?
Thanks in advance!!!

- You cannot make a nandroid backup without root. To make a nandroid backup you'll need a custom recovery (SafeStrap in the case of the D4) and you cannot install SafeStrap without root. Once rooted and with SafeStrap installed you can then make a nandroid of your stock system.
- I believe CM9 has been abandoned in favor of CM10 on the D4. CM10 (and other JB ROMS) run PRETTY well with a few caveats. Main bugs include bluetooth not working correctly, screen re-size when switching between landscape and portrait is a little janky, and the camera flash does not work. Personally, I don't even really notice the screen re-size thing anymore. The bluetooth issue is irritating but not a deal breaker for me. On the rare occasions when I want the camera flash I switch back to stock, which is quite easy and fast with SafeStrap 3.05. If you need something a little less buggy try out Eclipse. Pretty sure it's bug free.
Edit: Forgot one other CM10/JB ROM issue. You'll need a workaround to get MMS to work You can turn off auto-retrieve in the original app. You can flash an inverted gapps package. Or you can use a third party text app like GoSMS (that's what I'm currently doing).
- I use SMS Backup and & Restore. It preserves the timestamps so everything is in the correct order when you restore your messages. It's free on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mNvbS5yaXRlc2hzYWh1LlNNU0JhY2t1cFJlc3RvcmUiXQ..
I also use Call Logs Backup & Restore by the same dev. Also free and on the Play Store.
You probably had issues after the update because you need to do a factory data reset.
As far as all the info kwyt said, he is correct.
Hi,
I have a Motorola Moto G XT1068 - Dualsim, german version. I unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM PhilZ. OTA update does not work so I just skipped it until Android 5.0 is out now.
Questions:
1) I am using Titanium Backup Root for backing up my Apps, SMS, phone lists etc. I did not get any support from them if and how it will work on Android 5.0 due to the rumors that root is harder to enable. Any other update strategies, which programs do you use? ADB?
2) Which Rom (Fullrom?) do i have to flash in order to get Android 5.0 via OTA?
Thx for your answers
AFAIK no flashing of ROM is necessary as long as you're on stock. What you need is a stock recovery. I reckon you flash that ASAP.
Also, you might need to look into your system apps and make sure that you haven't deleted/disabled or converted to user apps.
Besides these steps, you'll be fine and will be able to update.

You have to install stock firmware and re-lock your bootloader. The guide to install stock firmware is on the general sub-forum and should be here.
I suggest using SMS Backup & Restore to backup your SMS. However, I recommend waiting until root is out to flash Android L. Then you can use Titanium Backup to restore your user apps & data.
I'm running L myself so I have to patiently wait for root. Good news though! The Moto X got a root solution by chainfire for Android L already. This means we could get root soon for Moto G.
Thank you for your answers so far.
I downloaded stock rom yesterday and planning to migrate today, due to the fact that a solution for rooting XT1068 comes near.
I just hope i got the right Stock Rom Version for german version and - always a bit worried that someone has put malware in the roms posted on fileshares.
Now I have to find out the right steps with ADB.
Full wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and restore partition required as I am used to do with Samsung crap due to other mounting of sd card? Always did it with CWM the times before and never had to relock bootloader. But I have also read that locking is not required for flashing 5.0.
Okay, lazy saturday, I am going to find it out myself

Nope, no re locking required. Just do the samsung needful. I had one of its ****ty mobile too. So hi5 there.
Anyways, I don't understand why are doing this stuff. Most probably a flashable zip would be uploaded on XDA the same day or max the next day. Just chillax and wait for the good news to arrive, which I hope is any day now
P.S Oh and also make sure that you don't lock your bootloader at all. Because then you wouldn't be able to unlock it, at least not right now, hence you wouldn't be able to root.
