[Q] I'm rooted and frozen...now what about OTAs?

So I know being rooted and receiving OTAs isn't a problem, but I've read that having frozen apps can be. What happens if I/we get an OTA and an app is frozen? Does it fail gracefully or will I have a nice shiny paperweight as a result?Could we freeze/disable the update app/service until they push one out and we're ready for it?

Most likely the phone will reboot to do the update but will fail during the file system check. Your phone will then boot again and a message will pop up telling you the update has failed.
This is what happened with my D2. I would expect the same to apply to the D3.

Let's say your rooted but did not freeze or do anything at all will you still get a update. I've herd yes you can and no you can't. I can understand if you have froze or deleted things that you wont but if you didn't do a single thing except root that you might be able to get an update?

If you're rooted but have not frozen / deleted anything you will get the update and likely lose your root.
Getting the update to install successfully depends on what you have frozen vs. What the update tries to update. If you freeze something it wants to update, it will fail.
Root itself doesn't play a part in this.

So having the update fail because of required frozen apps may be a good thing! It will prevent unroot and prevent a fix to the root exploit on your phone.. giving you time to come back to the forum and check for other users experience.. i love XDA...

I definitely want an update when one comes out to fix the camera a the cell standby. I have froze stuff but I will unfreeze them when an update comes out. But nice to know that I don't have to do any weird stuff to take an update. Now will we be able to root again.

Honestly, it's best to just wait. The update might patch root exploits and be very hard to root. If you wait just a little bit, then the devs will release a rooted and flashable update. Well, when we have recovery, that is. But recovery shouldn't be too far off.

If fixing the camera and cell standby is more important than root, then you should proceed with the update. If you want to keep your root, do not update quite yet, as GoogleAndroid said. It just might patch the exploit.

I would like to have non blue pics that would be nice. My phone ran really good before I froze stuff its a bit faster now so I would take the update and im sure someone will root that if not im still a happy droid 3 owner.

[Q] System updates not working

Hi all,
My wife and I both got Bionic the same day. Mine is rooted and hers is not. I noticed on hers you can go to settings>about phone>system updates and check to see if there are any.
However on my rooted phone it allways says something to the effect of ...'not available at this time". If I turn on wifi and try, it will have the spinning logo like its checking and says its checking, but this goes on without end.
Any ideas? Does rooting somehow disable your ability to receive system updates?

yes system updates are disabled typically on rooted devices because system updates may patch exploits that allowed the phone to be rooted meaning you may lose root permanately

NONONONO! The newest update isnt rootable yet!

Usually updates don't offer a big advantage anyways. I would research the update and make sure you really really really want to possibly lose root just to gain the advantage of whatever the update gives you.
9 times out of ten, I find the update to be pretty useless to even worry about.

[Q] How to perform OTA 4.2 update to a rooted Nexus 7?

I am very sorry for what is certainly a stupid question, but if it is any consolation I DID search and read through threads until my head hurt prior to posting.
1) What is the best way to apply the new OTA 4.2 update for those with rooted Nexus 7 tablet.
With the 4.1.2 update, I blindly installed the OTA update when prompted and didnt realize there was a problem until i tried to access my stickmount USB drive. Luckily the nexus 7 was still unlocked so I didn't need to wipe everything. All i did was re-root it using Nexus Root Toolkit v. 1.5.4. and was back up and running. Is this going to be the same experience with the 4.2 update?
I have installed Voodoo OTA Root keeper v2.0.3 - is this a better route for upgrade instead of re-rooting via the Nexus Toolkit? And if so, how should I use it (do know much about the app).?
2) Is stickmount going to work? And if not, is there a good working alternative for streaming mkv h264 movies to MXPlayer (or other player)?
The main reason I rooted was to access a USB drive for playing movies, TV shows while traveling. We are heading off to Cabo for Thanksgiving and definitely want to be able to access and play movies from my stickmount'ed usb drive. Any suggestions ? Should I just wait to update - and if so is there any way to get the Nexus to stop prompting to install the update all the time?

1) I just downloaded the OTA 4.2 .zip, copied it to my N7, ran CWM and flashed it. When it asked about keeping recovery and keeping root, I said "yes" and it worked without a problem!
2) Works for me.

Sorry these answers need to be dumb'd down for me
1) If i already have the update downloaded via OTA trying to install itself, is it really easier/necessary to locate the zip you mention, copy it to the N7 (not sure where to copy) and run CWM (not sure what that is or where i get it or how to install it). Is there an easier way to accomplish the update? Perhaps setting the Voodoo Rootkeeper to preserve the root or temporarily unroot.. then just install the downloaded OTA update and then return the root? Or just installing the update and then running the re-root using the Nexus Toolkit (like I did with the 4.1.2 update)?
2) I would like to know more about how you avoided this issue described in this thread here with stickmount not functioning with v4.2 because of the new mulituser framework that causes it no longer to see files in the mounted folders.
Thanks for your help and to anyone else that chimes in... any help is appreciated. Again sorry for being stupid.

i tried with OTArootkeeper app. but it don't update.... at restart for installing, it gave a black screen with android in the middle, with a RED icon inside it...... then it restart and 4.1.2 is always there

Perhaps these questions are so rudimentary that they hardly seem worth bothering with - but for some of us, these hacks and the info being thrown around in here are pretty confusing at times. I would be very grateful to anyone with some insight willing to help out?.

i found that this could be a problem with recovery mode... infact if i tr y to restart in recovery, it gave the same error...
i rooted with toolbox, and i'm thinking that it could have removed my recovery... now i'd like to try to recover the stock recovery with the same tool... but i'm not sure about that.

Hi! Last month I did the 4.1.2 OTA update. I was rooted but on stock. It updated with no problems. I used Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, restored the root, and either renistalled super su, or just updated the binary. Can't remember.....But I did lose my custom recovery. Didn't realize it till tonite when I went to do the 4.2 update.
So to your question. I forced the OTA 4.2 update. And it downloaded. I made sure voodoo rootkeeper was set to save the root. Then let it install. It rebooted. I opened voodoo, restored root, was asked to update super su binary, accepted. Still not rooted till I rebooted.
So far I have root, and am on 4.2 JB. So my goal was to get my custom recovery back on. Install goo manager from market. Open it, go to the settings button top right, it will give you the choice to install open recovery script. TWRP- Then it will ask you twice are you sure you want to do this and reboot? Say yes. Mine did not reboot and it looked like it did nothing. So, I flipped into recovery and Teamwinn recovery was installed. I made a backup, and rebooted.

If you have a minute, I would be grateful if you can just briefly confirm, describe specifically what I need to be checking/configuring in Voodooo (not very familiar with the app) prior to initiating the OS update, I would feel a little more secure before pulling the trigger.
It appears that many apps are still catching up with their own updates, including apparently stickmount (the reason I rooted) to handle the new 4.2 framework so I am thinking best to hold off until after thanksgiving vacation before applying the update.

Have you tried updating to 4.2 yet? Also i heard that if you update SuperSU to version 0.98 the latest version it could cause issues and you will have to reflash the device.

4.2 OTA already loaded, lost root
Hi, I have learned the hard way not to do the OTA upgrade. I just let the 4.2 OTA download when asked to. Now I lost my root that I had on my Nexus7 with 4.1.2. Still unlocked though. What can I do now to root it again and not lose all my apps and data?

Hi hinsdale! I am not a techie- I just learn as I go and read, read, read.
So, my voodoo app has 4 checks in the boxes. I seem to remember only 3 boxes checked when I did the update, but I'm not sure. It would make sense that all are checked.
After I updated, I opened the voodoo app first, and there is a box that says restore root. Then it asked if I wanted to update the su binary. Did that, still not rooted according to Tit. BU. Rebooted, then I was rooted. Good luck with your update.
I'm sorry I can't tell you how to run the initial save root on voodoo. I did it a while ago and don't remember, but it was not hard. Very easy.. Just make sure you Read, re- read, and read again before you do any modifications to your tablet. Know the possible bad outcomes, and be prepared to trouble shoot. This site is very good about helping you out if things go wrong. That's why it's a very good idea to be aware of the possible bad outcomes. The only way to know is to READ-READ=READ!
Did I mention READ??? lol. That's how I figure stuff out. If you read about others mistakes, you can avoid them. I also wait a day or 2 to see how it goes for others before I attempt modifications. That includes new roms. You never know what goes wrong until someone is the guinea pig! I am not techie enough to be the guinea pig!

same thing here...I tried to use TWRM to flash SU but it seems that after going into recovery using TWRM I can't see any any file or folder on my SD except 3 folders???? Can someone please help us....

YOu will need to search the best way to root again.
How did you root initially?? You may have to do it that way again. Just make sure the method is compatible with 4.2 JB.

Nexus Root Toolkit

The OTA update downloaded to my cache folder, I moved it to my sdcard. Wouldn't install since I had to fix a couple of files I had edited. So once those 2 files were fixed it installed just fine. Haven't had any issues yet.

The same on here...
But I guess it is better until they fix all this bugs they are reporting.

Hi have updated the nexus to 4,2 and used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to keep my root followed the instructions as I did when updated to 4.1.2,my Nexus appears to be rooted superSu is working also stickmount sees the usb but it will not show any files on the sd card any help here please to get it to see the files on the sd card, thanks for your time

i just downloaded and installed 4.2 OTA.
if your nexus was previously unlocked and rooted, it will download and install just fine. however you will lose root, but KEEP the unlocked state.
to root it again, you must goto "about tablet" and tap your build number 7 times to become a developer, this is not a troll, i got this info from another thread on xda.
then using the nexus root toolkit 1.5.4 with modeltype set to "android *.*.* any build", just do the root procedure.
reboot and ur in business, no need to update supersu, and busybox will still be installed already.

Recently jumped shipped to AT&T moto x and am absolutely loving it. I was perusing around the forum, and really wanted to ask some questions on a specific thread but due to the fear and anxiety of sounding dumb and wasting everyone else's time, I'm just posting a question here hoping that even stupid questions are answered with lots of love. I'm pretty comfortable with rooting, flashing.....aka I'm really good at following instructions, but would really like to expand my knowledge further and am having difficult time getting the explanations I need. SO, hoping some kind soul on here with AT&T Moto X will answer my questions in one shot.
Since my Moto X automatically updated with the new camera update via OTA when I got it four days ago, I was able to successfully root it using JCase's new RockMyMoto method. So, now I'm rooted - great. Everything is set up perfectly the way I want. Then now I find out that AT&T 4.4 is leaked, meaning it's probably going to be ready for an OTA update in the near future (I'm not planning on using the leaked one). So my questions are as follows...
1. I'm going to keep mine rooted until AT&T has 4.4 available for OTA update. Can I simply just run that update when it's available (which will break the root), then just re-root it when that's also available (which it seems like will be rather soon according to Jcase's tweet...)? Or will running the OTA update on my rooted moto x cause more issues other than simply breaking the root? Should I be going back to stock, get the OTA update, THEN re-root it?
2. My understanding is that AT&T boot loader is still locked down...so to my limited knowledge, this means I'm not able to make a NANDROID back up using CWM...am I wrong here in any way? Is there a way to make a NANDROID-like back up (which I used to back in S3 days) without having my bootloader unlocked?
3. Tethering...I was able to use FoxFi fine on my S3 (I got that good old granfathered unlimited data plan....), but it does not seem to work on my new Moto X. Is there any known work around for this? I have Titanium Backup Pro as well, so thought I could maybe just freeze the tether provision or w/e by AT&T but seems like I'm also somehow misunderstanding that there as no such thing seems to exist.

I can only respond to your first question. You can not take an ota while rooted. The exploit breaks the stock recovery. In order to take the update, you'll have to fastboot the factory images to revert to an in rooted state and then accept the ota. It's really easy and only takes a few minutes... Assuming you have adb set up and know how to use it, if not, an hour or so if searching and reading will get you up to speed.

You can also just flash the recovery.img back and take the OTA update while rooted.

You can install safestrap to make a backup and WiFi tether root works with some minor changes there's a thread somewhere.

Hmm, thanks guys I'll be checking out/learning more about the fastboot option
As for tethering, I've found some good information though for the first option, I haven't figured out a way to patch the at&t apk OP posted in his thread. Seems like quite the ingenious work around though, so hopefully I'll be able to figure it out soon! The second option seems to be a quick work around to get tethering to work, but seems way less secure...and I'll be using tethering to do work which I prefer to be on a much secure network, so we'll see.

just so the OP is led astray, if you only flash the recovery.img and you have made changes to your system apps or anything in the /system then you won't be able to take the ota and it will likely through you into a BL. If you don't know what you have changed, then go ahead and flash the system.img as well as recovery and you will be good to go. If you know what you changed then uninstall all of your root apps and change everything you change in the /system back to how it was and take the ota (after flashing recovery.img of coarse).
here is a great guide to adb stuff for you as well that got me started. still go back to it for reference occasionally. its a little old but it is still good.

[Q] Information Overload!

OK, I've read so much that things are just getting jumbled in my brain now. There's so much information in these threads that I don't know where to start. The world of Android apparently moves too fast for me to keep up. I've got a Verizon LG G2 that is stuck on 4.4.2, software version 24A. Right after I took the OTA KK upgrade I rooted with IORoot25. I don't think I've done anything other than root, however I have somehow can create the mobile hot spot without permissions. Not sure if there was an .apk that was put on when I rooted or how I did it because it was over a year ago.
Ever since I rooted, my phone tries to push OTA updates but they are always unsuccessful. Every morning I have to hit "Install Later" becasue it tried over night and failed. Besides this being a bit annoying, I haven't been concerned becasue the only OTAs since I got 4.4.2 was supposedly some small patch that didn't really do much (from what I read). But, the other day it notified me that it wanted to push Lollipop and needless to say, I want it.
My problem: I don't know what the hell to do! Besides rooting, I'm pretty sure the only thing I've done is download Flashify and backup my stock recovery. Flashify doesn't show that I have a custom recovery, nor do I ever remember installing one. Just whatever came with the IORoot25. Oh, and it looks like I Quarantined LGSetupWizard using App Quarentine. Pretty sure that's it. So, where do I go from here?? I'm wanting to move to Lollipop, then possibly de-bloat it, and would like a custom recovery so that I can create nandroid backups and possibly start trying out other custom ROMs.
I had an OG Droid for years and would flash ROMs frequently until I upgraded to a RAZR MAXX. Once I got the MAXX, and now the LG, all I've really done is root and hack the wifi, so I'm REALLY out of the loop now! Everything seems so complicated becasue there's just too much info out there. Could somebody please guide me in the right direction to make this as smooth as possible??

You could 'freeze' the update so it doesn't pop up every morning. IF you want to update- you can unroot it and then take the update and re-root it and fix the hotspot thing. I'm in the same boat, I'm about to do the same myself.

Thanks for the response. Hoe do I "freeze" the update? If I do decide to take the update and re-root, and especially if I start loading custom ROMs, I know I'm going to want to do this in the future. I've been getting theses OTA update notifications everyday for months now!!
Also, what's the easiest way to unroot?

AS long as you are running stock I believe you can accept the OTA without unrooting: I haven't done it yet as I haven't had a few free hours, but I'm going to try it tonight.
there are plenty of apps that allow you to freeze apps- titanium Backup Pro is one that comes to mind.
