I need to unroot my phone and restore it back to default IMMEDIATELY. Can someone link me?
I can't link you but I can direct you. You can download an RUU from HTC.com, or from the XDA heroc wiki page, or look in the dev forum, there's several scattered throughout-in particular, look for Regaw's 2.1 root guide thread. 2nd post has a link to an RUU

Haha, I dropped my phone and it cracked the screen in half, so I have to send my cracked one into the insurance repair service. I have already received my brand new phone, but they want my old one. Already unrooted

Im new to the rooting process and installing ROM's..Ive been reading into Rooting and Installing Custom Rom's but im still don't if I should root it becuase I have 2 friends that as soon as they got there android phones they tried too root them and bricked them soo im still iffy. I have the sprint 2.1-update1 ROM with the 2.27.651.6 Build Number.. Soo if you guys can give me a good Link or Post for Rooting thats updated or new because most of the links I find are old (video would be a plus) for a Noob like me and a Good Stable Custom Rom that you guys can recommend would be great. Thanksss!!!!
The first thing you will want to do is learn to use the search feature of the forum. It is really good and it will lead you to all of the info you will ever need. It will also save you a lot of grief, you will find that you will get much more helpful responses if you first try to help yourself, chances are your question has already been asked and answered 100 times.
Now that that is out of the way, regaw_leinad has a step by step tutorial on how to root the Hero. It's located in the CDMA ANDROID DEVELOPMENT forum. Easy enough to find though. Let me know if you can't find it and I will try and post a link.
Oh yeah, Welcome to the Hero Forums! Enjoy!

If they managed to ACTUALLY brick their phone, and not just did something they didn't know how to undo, it's cause they either can't or didn't read/search/askfor help.
It's damn near impossible to brick these phones, and honestly I don't even think you can brick them in the rooting process.
So did you get your phone rooted yet?
Thanks prios914 I found that regaw_leinad Post on rooting the Hero. But since this post was written last year when the hero had 1.5 would there be any diffrence since it now has 2.1??

Yeah you have to downgrade. It's just not possible to root the .6 version yet
Your welcome liftedngifted1 and the guide I was referring to from regaw_leinad was the one that thatguythatdid pointed you too. I'm new to the forums so I do not have the ability to post links yet.
As for Roms, if you are like many of the users of this forum, you will probably develop a case of ORD - Obsessive Rom-updating Disorder.
There are plenty of good roms to try out you just want to make sure you do your Nand backups and be sure to get Titanium Backup from the market as it will make it easy to restore the apps that you like to use on a regular basis, it will save you time.
Enjoy.
I'm confused. You said you had 2.1 and then you said you have 1.6. Sprint did not release 1.6 for the Hero. The phone originally had 1.5 and then they released an updated version of 1.5. And last month they released 2.1 followed by a patch for it. If you have 2.1 follow the steps from regaw's post or goto unrevoked.com from your phone.

I think he meant he has the update .6 build of the 2.1 system
Sprint recently released two RUU's 2.27.651.5 and 2.27.651.6 so when they are referring to 1.5 or 1.6 they are referring to the last two digits of the newest RUU's.

I'm usually over at the vibrant forum but my friend really wants me to work some magic on his phone. He has an HTC Hero with Cricket service, originally Sprint. I want to know if I root and flash a ROM to the phone will it undo anything that Cricket has done to give him service?

You can make a nand and try it. I doubt the rom would mess up the service, radio is below recovery/rom levels. that said, I don't have cricket, so who knows.
I have a request, please go back into jaybobs ROM thread and edit your post to say nothing, because it has NOTHING to do with his thread. If you can't find an answer in Q+A you shouldn't go into a rom thread with a completely unrelated question.
I hope you're able to help your friend.
Thanks. Will do.

I am looking at rooting my phone. I have a few questions but I'm not sure where to post at because I'm new on this site. I read through some root instructions, but the creators were not specific on some areas.
Does it matter what carrier I have if I root my HTC Hero as long as it is CDMA? I have Alltel. The instructions I read for this were not specific as to carriers, they just said CDMA HTC Hero.
My other question is when you root your HTC Hero, is flashing a new ROM to the phone part of the rooting process or something different. The instructions I read also did not clarify this.
Thanks
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
I don't know whether the carrier matters or not when rooting. You don't have to flash a ROM when rooting, but I would venture to say the the vast majority of folks are rooting to add a custom ROM. Especially with the Hero, due to it's limitations.
Edit: I found this post here. So I would research that a bit as far as carriers.
If you want to stay stock but remove bloatware, you can just root and remove with an app like root explorer. I would think about at least an overclocked kernel.

i know there are people on here who rooted from Alltel, the only thing is the majority of people have sprint.. so most of the custom stuff will come with sprints banner on it.. there are ways to change them and none of it is too hard at all to do.. its not a bad idea to try out some custom roms even if they are just custom versions of the stock rom..
i would check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674788 it gives a break down of everything you will need to know both with the site itself as well as rooting your hero in general.. a good thing to keep in mind before posting a lot of questions is google is your friend, a search of the forum will bring up most answers to anything.. a lot of people around here get really ticked if you post questions that have already been answered, or if you post it in the wrong section.. but check out the link, any other questions feel free to ask..
I found this blog on rooting. It doesn't say anything about carrier. Does anyone know? It just says CDMA, which is what my phone is.

you can root being alltel, rooting in general is not carrier specific.. if you flash certain roms it may change your provider banner to sprint because it is the most common, but even that can be changed back and it doesnt affect your radio or prl.. if its a CDMA hero the CDMA root process should work..
read the post that posted above yours, and check out the link.. literally tons of information about rooting..
check my hero rooting guide, it is NOT carrier specific and will work on Alltell. fast and simple way to root.

Rather than looting half of London, I spent my time giving something back to the Android Community.
I've compiled this guide on how to root the HTC Legend vodafone. It's pretty simple in my opinion and I've tried to make it as easy to use as possible. I have included a lot of images and started right from the beginning.

I think I've added in all the credits, but if I haven't then please tell me. I'm also making more guides for noob Android users.
Thanks for using the guide, and if you have any suggestions, please leave a comment.
N.B. Guides have since been taken down due to newer methods of one-click rooting.

Thank you. When I tried to root my HTC Legend, I couldn't find a proper guide, so I thought I'd make one to help other people out.
Hi Thanks i just swap my iphone with htc legend from my gf and planning to root the phone. this would be my only guide, hopefully no issue will happen and i will report back. the guide looks good and simple but the only thing i find is, TOO many files needed. maybe i can combine all of them and put in 1 place to help other newbies !
but i still shock to see number of files i need to root an android ! and the files are sooo big aswell ! different from iphone, you just need a website or 1 software to jailbreak it hehehehehe - relax im an android fan boy now !
Every Android device has its own rooting method. The one of the Legend is really long; but don't worry. It's not that hard as it seems. Also this guide is really good!

Error 140 means that you need to re-create the GoldCard. Your phone must also be connected as, "Charge Only". You could also try plugging your phone in another USB port. Also check that you have AndroidSDK installed.
Added another guide with some advice on choosing ROM's. I'm also working on a simple un-root guide.

I recently (yesterday) purchased a VIVID (AT&T) to udgrade from Inspire 4g.
After researching root procedures, if found Hasoon2000's Vivid All-In-One Kit V 2.1 and downloaded it.
Unlocked bootloader via HTC Dev - no problem.
through toolkit, downloaded CWM 5.5.04.
Then, since there wasn't a whole lot of crystal clear (noob) procedure, I then watched the video on his link, and went to add adk manager, and perm root (what i thought was "rooting the phone". it did what it did. Then flashed kernel: holicakes 2.6.35.14.
Somewhere between here, the CMD began not recognizing the device.
I then unplugged, rebooted and got the HTC screen freeze. Re-booted several more times to no avail.
Next step was to begin investigating recovery options, but I had no backups!.
I'm now stuck.
Please help.........

Q: Which RUU is it. I looked at one post yesterday which linked to a site adn the RUU's for AT&T were Cingular, but I couldn't determine which one was for the VIVID, so I didn't go any further.
Thanks for the help!
Could you post a link to the RUU possibly?

I'll let you know how it goes.
Roger that on Cingular. And yes, they bought Cingular. Prior to that Cingular bought Bellsouth Mobility. Prior to that BM bought Cellular one. I've been with them since 1997 when phones were an actual brick....ohhhh....and the bag phone.
Alright gents. Thanks for the assist and I'll get back.

Gents,
Even though I searched the forums 8 times to no avail figuring this was common problem, I just stumbled on the below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26638332#post26638332
Apparently this is almost a given that will happen using the all in one toolkit if you really didn't do your homework first.
A senior member really should mention this to hassoon 2000 to ensure it really is fool proof. I rooted my Inspire last year (1st android) with no problem due to an outstanding video that was no **** step by step Barney style that a dumb Marine with beer induced alzheiermers could freakin' understand.
I'm going to review the below when I get back to work on it.
Hate it i wasted you guys' time if it's all in the thread below. Too bad there's no money to hire a full time guy on here just to organize the threads a little better.
Thanks to all you smart folks who enjoy helping us dumb ones!!
