[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab as USB monitor? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi - just a random question.
So, samsung made this cool 7" monitor you can connect to your computer via usb called SyncMaster U70. It would be nice small screen to put gadgets/videos through desktop.
I am not so sure how it works, but I thought it would be a neat function if galaxy tab could do it. Is it may be possible?

Yeah that would be nice, but there is just one problem... AFAIK there is no (really simple) possibility to charge your tab via usb.. so if you don't have a dock that can charge and sync at the same time, you'll run out of juice really fast :-/
And as for iDisplay -> it is a cool app, but framerate is still low and I got now and then crashes, but works rather well.

Are you sure. My tab charges using USB(connected to a computer) just fine(very slowly), although it's now showing the normal "charging" icon.

yeah at least for me it doesn't work (Unlocked Euro Tab with overcome) It might charge (without indicating it, at least it didn't the last time I tried that... weeks ago), but it is/was too little to keep up the charge... if I use the tab it is still losing power and if you run some app that is more or less powerhungry like iDisplay it might be a problem :-/
I am not 100% sure but my experience tells me that... buuuut I think that the power from usb SHOULD be sufficient. I speculate that there is a small charge that is enough to keep the tab from losing power while syncing or in mass storage media mode, but too little to really charge the battery... I suspect it is by design, because I don't think the tab is THAT powerhungry, that justifies almost none charge while being plugged in.. (remember, it is just a oversized Galaxy S just with a larger screen)
Maybe the solution is somewhere in the software that manages the charging logic/circuits.

I often charge my TAB off my laptops usb port...seems to work.
I have overcome 1.4.4. installed.

[Q] USB Charging with Pc/Mac

I'm having an issue, and seems not just me,that I can't charge the Tab via usb connected on a laptop or a Mac book (pro).
I'm wondering if its firmware related, I've tried JID and JI6 same issue.
Are you guys having the same?
If someone is not having this problem can please be so nice to tell me the firmware version?
Thanks
no, you cannot charge the tab from a PC usb slot cause of some minimum power requirements which was the same way with ipad

No is not the same than ipad, ipad is possible to recharge with new macs (that what apple says on the web site, the don't say how new though). But is true the iPad has 2A battery versus the Galaxy Tab that has 4000mAh, I was hoping that there was a way to recharge it (slowly but at least to keep it alive when is connect)

Mine is the same guys... I left my AC charger at work over the weekend and have been charging it via USB the whole time... Slow but it gets there if you leave it on over night!
Mine won't charge unless I use the power adapter from Samsung
Mine does charge but slowly from USB.... you should also know that different PC boards and laptops have different power outputs.... in most cases, your tab should charge very slowly on USB power. Mine charges and has BT and Wifi on also... but with heavy use and plugged in to my laptop, it may offset and drain ever so slightly....
Same thing goes for car chargers... if not rated for higher output, it will charge VERY slowly. The original Samsung car charger has a much higher power output. If you can find one that has the same aftermarket USB car adaptor for Ipad charging, that should work too

The contacts on mine are upside down compared to an iPad/iPod/iPhone charger. The blade on which the contacts sit is also higher in the charger slot than an iPad charger. How did you get it to fit without breaking something?
Some PC:s (motherboards) have so weak power output via USB, that they just barely provide a mouse and a keyboard but nothing more.
So anyone should not expect it to be enough for charging Tab.
Tab's own power supply gives 2 Amps out!
My experience about car-usb-adapters: one can charge Tab, other quite similar for some reason not. However, both charge Galxy S fine.
Just something to keep in mind as an option... Usb 3.0 will give more juice to usb cables than current usb ports. Apple has "cheated" and already increased the power to the regular usb ports on their newer laptops on par/better with usb 3.. So... If you get usb 3 cards installed you'll have a port with enough amps to charge the tab. Easier/cheaper to just buy a pdmi cable but if you are about to upgrade to usb 3 its more incentive to do so.

Regarding the ipad charging you can use the below link to to download an ASUS program that will boost the USB power for Windows this works for the ipad and it's showing as charging when connected to my PC this may also work for galaxy tab
http dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/AiCharger_V10006_XpVistaWin7.zip
Charging using usb on my mbp does take a long time. I timed it and it took at least 6 hours to charge from completely empty to full. Its ok since I plug it in when I'm about to go asleep and by the time I'm up its fully charged.

Careful with that.
Seems it has the not-uncommon tendency to screw up USB drivers to the point that mice and keyboards won't work either, especially on Win7 and Vista X64 machines. It got me, had to do a system restore to fix it. Neat idea though.

USB port should give at least 500mA. But anything more is OK. So Apple can make their USB ports to give anything over 500mA and it is well within the standard. Actually it is good for everyone because if Apple port can give 2A you can use non powered hubs and have power for lots of USB devices.
Actually the Tab charges fine (albeit slowly) from a USB, you just have to be aware of a few things. Firstly as mentioned above some USB ports provide more power than others. Try the different ports on your machine and you'll soon figure out which ones work best. Secondly, while the Tab will display the "Connect your charger" message, it is actually charging. Go into Settings, About Phone, Status and watch the battery level. It'll take a while but will creep up. Finally, it charges faster when the Tab is switched off. ie: if you're actually using it, you won't get a charge, if you have it in standby with screen off, it'll charge slowly (takes most of a day for a full charge) and if the Tab is switched off, it'll go a lot faster (though still not as fast as with the power adapter.)
This is good to know as you can plug it in to your computer and let it set on your desk at work all day and know that it is slowly trickle charging.
I also found that plugging the USB cable into an Apple adapter (from an iPhone) brought up the same "Connect your charger" message, but did charge the Tab, faster than a USb but not as well as my samsung plug.

USB Desktop Sync Cradle

its too fancey for me, but i dont see why it would have any problems
Bought one - does charging fine for me - don't use it for syncing.
Cons - getting to buttons isn't the easiest when it's docked. It's a bit "fancy" and takes up a fair bit of space on the desk.
Pros - fairly cheap for a dock at the moment. If you feel like a bit of DIY you can remove the black docking section and wiring and put in a smaller stand bit. Next month's job for me.
I've also found this one:

I haven't seen any reviews on it yet, but it looks pretty nice. Comes in both black and white.

It will probably work, but you'll have same results (charging wise) as on normal USB. Without original Samsung cable, the tab will always open the USB connection window.
BTW; the tab will charge on any USB, even on your computer USB, only thing is it will charge slower. Also, it will state that the battery is not charging, but it will charge just fine anyways.
You may not be able to charge enough to keep the batter at 100% if you're doing some heavy processing on the Tab, but it will prolong the battery life.
You could make one of these for one side of the switch and then it'll switch the Tab to fast-charge. If you have it plugged into a 1A or greater power source, it should charge faster than just the standard usb trickle.
Or if you're feeling adventurous, just open that switch up and put the resistors inline on one of the usb ports itself.

I can charge the tab fine via my pc; although as you mentioned it indeed is much slower rate. I hate having to unplug from computer to power adapter when I want to get a full charge quickly; thus the switchbox idea.
I actually went ahead and order one, although different one from what I listed above. It was only $13 shipped so I figured I'd give it a shot. Also picked up a universal dock / stand. I'll post back how well it works and picts when I get it.
What about this one?
Whats your thoughts on this dock/cradle/charger?

Need to make your self a universal usb charging adapter, look it up on here.
Works and been tested with 7.7 aswell!
You need to solder resisters 33k and 10K To the data and power lines...

Do you mean D+ and D- lines of USB need to be pulled up ? and which D line should have 33k or 10k ?
Link please .
yes thats the one..
(make sure you join the resistors to each other at the middle aswell.)
Look at the resisters you use and make sure they are both facing the same direction. My first attempt to do it failed and at first i thought it didnt work on 7.7
Then i noticed one resister was back to front.not 100 percent sure if this was the problem but after i changed this from looking at pictures online and comparing the pics to my resisters i noticed what end the 2 colored bands are at.the 33k one with the gold bands and the 10k one with dual black bands.
The end of the restister with the gold bands(33k) and Black bands(10k)
is the end that the power joins to.
The other end of the resister should have matching bands on 10k and 33k.
this is the end that joins to the data line.

once i left my turned-off 7.7 connected to my running PC for few hours, to my surprise the battery seems to be charged-up during that time
yup... its still charging... but slowly...
Actually you could get faster charging with that USB data cable when the PC has been installed with the proper drivers. The standard downstream port could deliver up to 500mA ONLY after the USB hub has negotiated power draws with the host interface. Otherwise the port might just deliver less that 100mA power.
Kies provides the suitable driver. You may uninstall Kies afterward and keep the driver installed.
In addition, PCs have two kinds of USB port — standard downstream port and charging downstream port. Some older PC would label them 'SDP' and 'CDP', but I found that most modern PCs don't distinguish them at all. As you might imagine, you could get faster charging plugging into a CDP than into a SDP.
FYI., those ports used in wall charger is the third kind of USB port, CP - Charging Port.
Hi!
After installed the Battery HD soft, when link with PC, That programe showing the charging time and progress charge. but still not sure.
I am charging via USB as we speak.
I am doing it using a standard mincroUSB cable (that I use to charge my GNote and SGS2) and added an adapter I got on eBay for my SGT10.1
You can pick one up here: http://goo.gl/EMzpJ
It's not as efficient as the AC charger but it's doing a good job and will get you by if you haven't got access to a power point.
Can use this hub to charge as well
This SIIG INC - SYNC/CHARGING HUB AND READER FOR GALAXY TABLETS - CE-H21112-S1 gives you the capability to charge your Tab through a computer USB port. Seems to work pretty good used it last night. Checked the net prices vary per vendor.

The connector on the 7.7 tab is exactly the same as on P1000. There is no trouble in charging.
My original cable came with the tab allows me to charge via USB @ my laptop, but the charging speed is very slow. So I prefer to use an external portable charger over this most of the time. Not sure if there are any apps or software that allows fast charge kinda stuff?

Same problem here. No matter what external battery pack, this S3 mini is not detecting the battery pack as a charger. All of these packs work just fine with any other phone: tried with 2 SII, i8910, different Nokia phones, Blackberrry's etc.
I suspect that somewhere in the kernel there's no "3rd" unknown source or it has odd values, or it's somewhere else, but definitely soft problem as phone usb port works fine and recharges just fine from PC or laptop with any and every usb cable. Same goes for wall chargers. I haven't tried with car chargers just yet, but might do so. Just the phone is not mine, it's my wife's phone so I can't just take it with me.
Any suggestions?
Just a quicky: Is your phone trying or connecting to a PC in MTP mode?
XXAMA2 rom here and it always has only MTP or Picture mode, maybe this triggers something if on external power pack?
Edit: BTW, even when phone is turned off it won't charge the battery from the 3rd party external battery packs... weird.
Edit2: It started to charge out of 2.1A port on external pack after 5 minutes... then continued to charge once the phone is turned on. Later I unplugged it and plugged in again and it won't charge if the phone is on. Oh well, at least it can charge if first turned off. At least that when on the road and without wall plug...
Even more strange is what I'm getting now when plugging to Duracel external pack - phone starts the music player on it's own and starts to play... I think it's defo something related to MTP or such...
Strange. My power bank works just fine. The charging indicator shows when I plug my S3Mini with my power bank. (Cheap chinese brand. 5200mAh, 1.0 A)
Usually when the USB indicator showed up when you plug your external power source, the cable is the one with 4 lines (two for transferring data, and the other two for receiving electricity needed for charging, or +/- ).
Try using the USB cable with two lines only (electricity lines only, without data transferring lines)

Well, after trying all USb cables I have in my house I found one that is CHARGING IT!!! I dunno what wires it has or not and I don't care ATM. Point is there's nothing (EDIT) wrong with battery packs nor the phone. It all still indicates damn MTP kicking in where it shouldn't IMO. Dang Samsung for screwing it all up yet another time.
Still, I'm happy it CAN work all right, so no more depleted battery when on the road / trip

Veryyy slow charging

Went to a music festival over the weekend and used a portable charger to charge my phone, this is the last time I remember my phone fully charging. Once it died and I got back home, my phone would occasionally say USB connected and not charge until it said USB disconnected. Now it doesn't say that anymore but it charges ridiculously slow...
-Overnight charging I got 40%
-Left my phone for 3 hours and got 11%
-Use my phone while it's plugging into the charger and the battery still lowers rather than charging.
I've tried putting it in Ultra power saving mode and charging it while it's off but there is no big difference, I'm mad cause this cable is supposed to be charging it super fast.. Writing this post while my phone is plugged in I've already lost 2%
Nothing is wrong with my cord or the plug I am using, it's all the same stuff I have been using before. Could there be a problem with the port or something? Helppp
My phone is also in great condition always had a case, and just got it this past April
*also my phone is rooted so I don't think I can use the warranty

Are you sure? Cords die easily. Can you confirm how many amps the cord and the plug are allowing to be pulled? I've seen different phones pull different amps from different cords and plugs.
You can un-root and get back to a clean phone if you want to take it back.

Nothing is wrong with my cord or the plug I am using, it's all the same stuff I have been using before. Could there be a problem with the port or something? Helppp
My phone is also in great condition always had a case, and just got it this past April
*also my phone is rooted so I don't think I can use the warranty

*#0228# this will show ur battery stats. Post that info. Also the is a option to reset your fuel gauge stats but I do believe you need to be fully charged for this.

How can I confirm the amps? And all I know is I've never had a problem with the chord before and I've even tried regular microusb cables that do the same thing

If you have tried other cables and get the same result, you may have a problem. However I have seen cords got from .44a to over 1.2a from two different phones though.
I use these to test: AboveTEK® USB Power Meter Voltage Tester Current Monitor

check the power brick your using, if its the Samsung one that came with the phone it should be like 2 amps if I remember. id suggest using another power brick to test. also if you have a usb 3 super speed port on a pc or laptop sometimes you can use device manager in windows (start menu, right click computer, manage, in the window that opens click device manager, expand the universal serial bus controllers heading, check though any devices that say hub and go to their power tab) to see how many amps something is pulling from a pc usb. the other option is that you might have a defective battery but I don't know for sure. these are just some ideas that may or may not work for you.

Sounds like the portable charger might have been able to adjust amperage or voltage. If that's the case the portable charger could have damaged your battery if it was wrong amp and too high of amps. I have a portable charger that even changes voltage that could ruin a device too if not on 5 volts.

It sounds like it could be a battery problem. More likely, it could be a problem with the software. I would back everything up and flash another ROM or bring it back to full stock.
Option 1:
Install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.bmw
It will tell you batter voltage and charging current.
Options 2:
Charge with phone powered off.
Thank you everyone for the replies, my phones been getting worse to the point where it sometimes wont charge.
I think what im going to do is flash back to stock and bring it in to samsung or something , but also i heard a rumor that towelroot doesnt void the knox warranty? if this is true i may just bring it in as is...only becuase when i connect my phone my laptop wont read it anymore either, i havent tried if odin will but im assuming it would, i just dont want my phone to end up bricking because of the bad connection
This sounds like an old problem with Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S series. My original Galaxy S did this, my S3 did this, my sister's S3 did this. On those phones it was the charging port that caused the problem. My sister had her port replaced and her phone is working fine again.
Although I don't know for sure if that's your problem, that would be my first guess.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it has to do with the charging port, my battery is fine and so are my cables, and it randomly keeps saying USB connected/disconnected and won't change when it's "connected"
