Safe Mode? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just messing around and discovered I can put my Captivate in safe mode. I did so by holding down the Menu button when the boot animation starts. When in safe mode my app drawer only shows the apps my Rom came with. When i go to manage apps all the apps I have installed are there. and i can uninstall them. Does this have any real value? I am running FireFly 2.7.

Oh snap!! I have never noticed that before, I just tried it, same rom sp-voodoo #12 kernel and sure enough safe mode. This would be super handy if say you intalled an app that was somehow causing bootloops or constant force closes, you could use the safe mode to bypass that app and uninstall it so you can boot normally. I will for sure remember this little trick.

Has anyone else used this for anything?

Not used it, but it does work on Continuum v4 (but it made my clock widget disappear) w/suckerpunch-voodoo#11 and jpg modem.

Captivate won't boot (tried to flash Unhelpfuls)

So what is the issue if my phone does not boot? It's chilling at the Galaxy S screen then shuts off. I have to remove/replace the battery to get it to boot up again.
Put it into download mode and reinstall the Odin one click restore...
Will do, thank you.
This seems to be an issue with disabling the Voodoo lagfix. I'm working on it but it's a bit difficult as there's nothing to see... There's a tar version of 1.4.1 that you can flash with Odin, btw.

I had Ext4 lag fix. I had to uninstall it to put on OTA. Then the Cappy wouldn't boot after the removal of lag fix. Had to Odin it. I think I'm gonna stay away from lag fixes. I just don't know about the android system well enough to mess with system files. It's really nice for developers to improve the phone though.

clockwork won't boot properly from rom manager...

It seems after I flashed supernova anytime I go into rom manager and try to reboot to recovery I get this whole update media deal and than it says fail and i get stuck on the captivates regular recovery.I can't click reboot or anything it only lets me scroll. The only way I have been able to solve this is by pulling the battery then it'll boot into recovery. Anyone else experiancing this.

This is more than likely due to the lagfix which changes the file system from rfs to ext4, currently ROM Manager cannot see ext4 properly.
Just adding my two cents but you really should never use rom manager for anything. It is outdated and pointless now. Hold down the power button and select recovery to get into recovery mode or use the button method.

Same thing happened to me after flashing from Cog 3.04 to Serendipity.
After a little searching I came accross this link in the Serendipity thread for resolution if you need to boot into recovery mode from Rom Manager:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
As others have mentioned, when I select Recovery mode from the Power menu I get into Clockwork Recovery without a battery pull.

SAFE MODE and what can we do with it?

So I found someone posted how to get our phones into SAFE MODE yesterday. Basically wondering what does this entail? What can it be used for? Is it pretty much the same as SAFE MODE on a PC for fixing issues? Anyone know any REAL DETAILS. If you can spell them out here. I am wondering if it can be used in cases where we did something like flashing a theme, kernel, etc. And wound up in a bootloop if we can go into safe mode and make changes or fixes to what we did? Is it to be able to recover from a crash? Is it for fixing wifi issues? What else would it be included for? Any thoughts? Or input please. I may play around with it a bit to figure out more.
I have tried this on CM7 and on Continuum 5.5 so I am not sure if it only a Gingerbread thing or not. If you are on froyo or eclair try it out and see if it does go into safe mode also.
HOW TO:
1) REBOOT YOUR PHONE
2) ONCE THE BOOTSCREEN COMES UP HOLD DOWN THE MENU BUTTON AND KEEP HOLDING IT UNTIL IT IS FULLY BOOTED.
3)Boom You are in Safe Mode.
DO NOT BE WORRIED IF YOUR HOME SCREEN APPS AND SUCH ARE NOT THERE. IT IS SAFE MODE. TO GET OUT OF IT JUST REBOOT PHONE AND LET IT BOOT UP NORMALLY.

Well it is volume up, menu, power button, then at&t release power. Then at galaxy s screen release menu then rehold for safe mode on froyo...i didn't discover this or take credit for it..... Here is link for those who want to see sight from were it came from.....http://forum.androidcentral.com/t-captivate/37245-any-way-enter-safe-mode-captivate.html

What? it works the same on froyo and gb. Hold the menu button when the boot animation starts. No touching of any if the hard buttons.
This question is probably stemming from my comment In the talon thread yesterday...
no it can't be used to fix a bootloop from a bad theme or incompatible kernel, those are still system processes that are loaded in safe mode. What it's for is if you have some user app that's running amok...say you have an app that is constantly force closing, so much so that you can't get into uninstall it, or the app caused it to loop, boot into safe mode and it won't be loaded so you can easily navigate to where it's installed and delete it.

Weird...not much of a cog fan but on every I9000 rom it does it with the menu button...could be a kb1 thing? I never tried kb1.

Thanks for the explanation. It was probably your post I had seen, tried it out on Continuum and then on CM7. Then I was more curious as to what it would be used for. Thanks again

I can get into safe mode by only pressing the menu button on Fusion. Tho I was pressing it from before the boot animation started, if that somehow makes any difference.
P.S. I think it killed my widgets... since they are wiped off the home screens, and the only thing I did was reboot into safe mode and reboot back out.

Oh yeah that'll happen...those are apps that aren't loaded, and you have to reset them after normal reboot from safe mode. It's kind of like when you restore your launcher with tibu after a flash, the widgets will either be gone or won't load.

Virus on my rooted captivate running cognition 4.4.9.

I went to restore an app from TiBu called Tunee Music. I wanted to download a song. After playing a preview of the song my phone crashed. After reboot no application will open. No system app will open. Not even rom mgr or titanium back up. I basically have an unusable phone. How do I fix it if I can even install a new app or fire one up? I can even get into rom mgr to flash CWM. HELP!
ADB into recovery or use the 3-button and try re-flashing
I believe u can reboot into recovery from the custom pwr mgt in cognition. But what do I need to do after that? Usually I have to disable voodoo lag fix and flash cwm. Are u saying I can just boot into recovery and flash from there with no problems?
Normally I'd say disable lagfix, but I've flashed without doing it before with no problems. But your experience may vary lol

Any particular steps to take?
idk if you even need to reflash...go into recovery and wipe data/fatcory reset, wipe cache, go into advanced menu and wipe dalvik cache. reboot and restore your apps and see if that helps.
if you still have that problem do those steps again and then instead of rebooting flash the rom.
Will those actions delete the items i have in my gallery? Also, I was actually in the process now of reflashing. I am rebooting now after disabling lagfix.
nope, does not touch the /sdcard partition except for the android folder in it.
Now I am really dumbfounded. I just disabled voodoo lagfix and rebooted and everything works now. This is frustrating.
That app was removed from Android market.

This app is unfortunately no longer available on the Android market.
You could try:
Searching for an Android app in the search bar above.
Go to the main page for the freshest Android apps.
You could also booty in safer mode and un-install app next time....just my opinion I would change thread title, because this would be misleading to someone searching.

Just a suggestion you should make better description for when people search can find this thread... Just saying

[Q] clockwork problems

Howdy all. I've been playing with my wife's captivate and it's rooted with a custom ROM. Whenever I go to put it into clockwork recovery mode I need to do a battery pull. For example, I just did a rom backup (through ROM Manager) and in order to back up the rom, it enters boot mode and freezes, I do a battery pull then hit the power button and it goes right into clockwork recovery and runs normally. It happened when i was putting on a custom ROM also. Any ideas?
Another issue I have with the phone is that it seems that the backlight has a minor short, it tends to flicker a bit. is that common for the captivate? Should I restore and return?
thanks!
I would suggest not using rom manager and go into recovery with the button combos, adb, advanced power menu, etc and do your backup from there.
I haven't really had a problem with the flickering personally but it could be a bad flash. What rom are you running?

I see by your previous posts you can read the stickies in the rapheal section. Why not read them here.
First are you sure the 4 lights at the bottom are flickering? Or are they turning on/off for a while? My guess is that whatever rom your on has bln activated (backlight notification) and you have a missed call, text, or something else that is turning them on and off. See if you have the BLN APP installed and disable it to see if it is what was causing it.
