Hello ladies and gents. First off, I'd like to apologize for breaking any forum rules as I post this. This is my first post, and I'm a little frustrated.
As the thread topic reads, I'm having trouble getting my moto droid to tether, specifically to my wifi xoom. I have also tried to search for the network on my psp, and it didn't show up there, so I know its not my xoom. Besides that proof, I've successfully connected my xoom to several wifi networks.
I have, obviously, already rooted my droid. I have flashed several roms, including CM6 and CM7, bugless beast, currently running axiom sixty6. I have run sholes, and I have run chevy's kernels, include ULV/LV .8, 1, and 1.1
All of these roms and kernels are great, but I have yet to get my tethering apps to actually tether. I've tried both wireless tether app and barnacle app.
I would REALLY appreciate help at this point. Googling has yielded no results, yet there are several youtube videos showing the motorola droid tethering apps working. Even just letting me know what rom/kernel you're running with successful tethering would help me out.
Thanks in advance!

this is an easy one... you should notice you can tether with any pc /mac /other OS, but not with an iphone/ipad, or android devices. this is because the motorola droid is not capable of true AP mode (access point) wireless tethering, but rather the droid can only do what is called ad-hoc tether [at least to the best of my knowledge]. if you fired up a laptop in the same room, i bet you would see the wireless tether/barnacle wireless, but it would be an adhoc (peer to peer ) wireless network. Sorry.
******** EDIT: news, see my next post below for info how to tether with BT to the xoom! ****
experience: rooted my sister's moto droid. They were able to use the wifi to get internet on her mac computer, and not sure about a PSP but his sony PS3 could not access the motodroid wifi. I personally use an HTC Incredible which allows for AP mode tethering in the recent versions of wireless tether.
apparently there is a way!
i found this guide to setup xoom tethering to the droid via BT!

ok, so thanks to all the brilliance here i'm fully rooted and loving life EXCEPT i still can't tether to my iphone with mywi. it is set to default simply broadcasting its little wifi heart out. as far as i know mywi creates a hotstop not an adhoc connection, anyone else have this issue?
answer
I saw that the question had many views but no responses, so i'll go ahead and share what i've found. First, as stated some where else in another thread the tablet doesn't accept adhoc connections. Sadly, i looked everywhere online and apparently there aren't any jailbroken iphone apps that support infrastructure mode wifi.
I did however find a site that claims to open android tablets to adhoc connections, does anyone know if this is possible?
Thanks,
Mark

A friend who just bought a NC last night is also having the same issue. according to the research he did there are no wifi tethering applications that broadcast in infrastructure mode, they are all adhoc, including mywi.
There appear to be methods involving editing some files and statically entering your SSID info and whatnot. I'll look into it further tonight after work and get back with you.
It's an Android shortcoming. There's a fix... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961 but unsure if it'll work with our NC since we don't have a ROM dump yet. If this doesn't work worst case scenario we lose WiFi. And the dump is needed to restore the replaced file mentioned in the posted thread, otherwise a hard reset of the NC would be necessary.
Excuse me if this has already been presented in another thread, but I have not been able to find an answer to the following question.
I have a rooted htc hero with NFX-sprint Stock 2.32.651.2.ODEX.A2sd rom.
I am trying desperately to tether the bluetooth with my new honeycomb Xoom Wifi only with Wireless Tether.
I am able to get the Wireless Tether App to work, but I cannot get the Xoom Wifi only to give me a tethering option.
Has anybody with a rooted hero got the Xoom Wifi only version to tether with their HTC Hero. If so, what rom are you using and what did you do to get it to work. Again this is the Xoom Wifi only not the Xoom with 3g and Wifi (I guess there are some differences in the hardware and software).
Thanks.
Hero only broadcasts wifi in ad-hoc, check your settings on xoom. I don't have one, but maybe it's a simple fix? Otherwise if xoom has usb you could just wired tether.
sent from a series of tubes.
don't look for a tether option.... start wireless tether on your hero , then open wireless settings on your xoom and look for the Android Tether wireless network and connect.

I don't have the Xoom, but I do have the Archos 101 which is 2.2 not Honeycomb. I was able to bluetooth tether with the Wireless Tether App. I was using aospCMod 3/24. I have since changed ROMs and haven't tried to tether. I will do it this evening when I get home and document the steps I do to get it to work.
I am thinking that I paired the devices first before I did anything with the tethering. Then once I started the Wireless Tether App with Bluetooth I had to go into the tablet's wireless settings and select Bluetooth tether. I know it saved a lot of battery on my phone over tethering WiFi. The Archos doesn't have a GPS antenna and I was able to share the GPS too, which worked pretty slick.
needed a new rom
Flashed CM7 new from and bluetooth tether now works...
Must be in the rom's kernel...
!
Thanks for everyone's help.
good you got it fixed
Greeetings to all. I"ve been here before and thought it would be a good time to join. I managed to tether my wi-fi xoom to my Sprint Hero yesterday via BT pan after flashing cm7, (stable). I had tried several times with a few differnt ROM's with no success. I have to say....It's like night and day. I didn't know the hero could be so fast and handle so much.
I have been rooted for since August by following this thread, Thank You regaw_leinad
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
This may help? I'm not a tech guy, just like having the ability to tether and do things my way. Don't know if all these steps are necessary.....but it's what worked for me.
1. Downlaoded and saved Cyanogen mod update-cm-7.0.2-Heroc-signed.zip from this link.
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/20126-cyanogenmod-7-for-the-htc-hero-cdma-v702-25-april-2011/
You will also need to download the google addon pack from that site and save it.......gapps-gb-20110307
2. From Rom Manager, (free version), I created a nandroid backup.
3. Mounted and saved that back-up to my computer, then deleted everything on my sd card and computer just to be safe.
4. Formatted and partitioned my sd card using rom manager, then did a hard boot.
5. Mounted copied update-cm-7.0.2-Heroc-signed.zip to sd card
6. Unmounted and installed rom from rom manager, cleared all catch data and rebooted
7. After reboot remounted and moved google add-on pack gapps-gb-20110307
to sd card...installed, rebooted.
8. After my reboot, set up mail and filled everything in, all my previous apps downloaded on there own. (You have to have online backup to do this or do it yourself)
9. Opened Wireless Tether and selected BT, Make device discoverable.
10. Select BT on Xoom and make device discoverable, scan for devices, and scan for devices on Hero
11. Once both devices are found hit pair on both after confirming codes
12. Once Paired you will see that they are paired but not connected.
13. Select the wrench icon to the right your device name on the Xoom
14. BINGO....the the tether option is finally an option.
15 Click on tether device.....This should now show that the devices are connected. Return to home screen on Xoom and go to browser to confirm
16. Put the Xoom down and go play with cm7
ah.. i hate to burst your bubble but he got it fixed like 3weeks ago lol
OH, I know he figured it out a couple weeks ago. I'm just a redneck biker who likes playing with these things. Just thought I'd share my experience. I'm one of those who needs step by step instructions in language I can understand. Just thought I'd put it out there for anyone else looking who needs something more detailed. You pro's speak in a language a lot of people don't understand. LOL'er
Brand, spanking new NC, came with updated software version already installed. Freshly rooted. Won't recognize ad hoc networks, of course :-(
Already tried the most up to date wpa_supplicant file fix, to absolutely no avail. Using rooted droid 1, with well-functioning wireless tether. Barnacle also a no go.
Any suggestions would very appreciated. Pulling my hair out, one by one, getting balder...balder.......

What does this mean?
Thanks for your help. What I mean is that the wpa supplicant fix (as described in previous threads - I'm using the Droid 1 browser or I would link back to that xda thread - sorry!) produces no effect. When the NC scans for wireless sources it recognizes many hotspots. Including my home wifi router. It simply will not list the phone's ad hoc signal (called either android tether or barnacle, depending which turned on.) The winbox connects just fine, so I don't think it's the phone's signal.
Others have used the wpa supplicant fix and their NC has worked well, but from what I can tell, they have NC's that were not upgraded to latest version, or had upgraded themselves. I wonder if brand new NC with the upgrade installed, needs a different fix. Not to be paranoid, but the wireless tethering apps have fallen out of favor with the powers that be. Maybe there is more disabling going on --- or I could just be doing something wrong. (Would not be a surprise)
Has anyone with a NC that came with the update pre-installed been able to get wifi tether? Using a phone with the paid wifi hotspot function will work with the NC. However, the droid 1 does not have a paid wireless hotspot option (it's too ancient, apparently). I had to sideload the wireless app to my phone, as it's not available on the market anymore, andit works well - just not with NC, even with the standard wpa supplicant fix.
Would upgrading the NC to CM7 take care of this issue? I'm a children's doc with skimpy hacking skills, & am a little afraid to try the procedure. Like doing an appendectomy with without knowing human anatomy

Wireless tether is working perfectly for me with CM7 right from the get-go, however....It does not work with Honeycomb at the moment (and I have not done the supplicant fix yet).
Thanks, hockeyfamily. I should probably go ahead and do the CM7 ROM.
update
Still have rooted v 1.2, not yet CM7. What finally worked for enabling ad hoc wifi, was deleting everything i had done previously, redoing it over again, & using Barnacle. The Wireless Tether app just giving a message to the effect that it was 'connected, but no internet.'
I updated to 1.2, rooted with an early version of MN, have an Eclair phone running Barnacle and this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872521 works great for me.
I've been trying many multiple things to get wireless tether to work. I currently have CM7 installed and have tried Wireless Tether for Root (versions 1.6, 2.0.7, and 3.1b2) and I've tried Barnacle Wifi Tether ver 0.6.7. In both apps, I can start tethering, but I can never see the phone from any other device (Win7, Evo 4G, iPod, Xoom). I also never see any data being transfered (up or down).
I swear I used to have tethering working on my Hero before, but I just cannot get anywhere with it. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make a Nandroid Backup!
Then Try Flashing a Different Rom, This way you can possibly determine if its the Rom, or whatever else that it may be!

Thanks for the suggestion. That's actually the last thing I tried before I posted my question. I tried the Toast Hero 2.4.0 ROM and that didn't make any difference. I still could not get anywhere with any wireless tether, couldn't see it, and it never reported any data transfer.
Any other suggestions?
Kushdeck ftw. I tether everyday. Great rom too.

Don't know if your Big on Sense Roms? But you could try my ExEnHeroC Rom... I'm Sure that Tether works, at least for Mostly everyone that I've spoke to! It should also work on the SenseFroyoV8.1 or V8.5 Roms too!
Also what Tether App are you using?
Good Luck!
Thanks everyone for the help. I think I figured out the issue. I think my issue is that the Hero can only do Ad-Hock connections. Am I correct in that? I was trying to connect to the Hero with another Android phone (HTC EVO) and a Xoom. It appears that neither of them support Ad-Hock connections.
Am I correct in all of this? Can the Hero support non-Ad-Hock connections?
hero only supports adhoc signals
Well, shoot. I thought for sure I tested it on a Win7 laptop and an iPad. I guess I didn't.
Does the bluetooth tether option work with the Hero? Thanks for all of your help with the WiFi option.
apple devices and windows will conect to it fine linux has issues.
I never had problems with Linux.
Oh, how I love my Evo 3D. Hotspot is so much better. Especially with 4G. I have my blue ray/ netflix player tethered to it to watch netflix.
"Damn you look even uglier in 3D"
im not sure about other linux distroes but on ubuntu at least it always just hangs on connecting then itll disconnect itself after five minutes or so. usb tether always worked fine though.
Have you tried PDAnet(Bluetooth&wired) ? If you don't want to switch ROM's just for tether. I've had it just over a year & am very happy with it especially after this last update.
As some of you may know yesterday i went through he!! getting my Razr M rooted. I did it. The reason for the root was the built in tether on the Droid Razr M doen't work with my Droid tablets both running ICS. So I figured if I root and then get a tether from Google Play then it might work. Problem now is I've downloaded all of them seems like (accept FoxFi it sucks now because it makes you install a screen lock password that can never be removed.) I set these things up start the tether and no device can see them. My laptop, tablet destop all nothing. As if it weren't there. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong if anything. I've used wifi tether on my rooted Droid X and it worked great. Now not so much. There seems to be extra settings like select lan network. The choices are ip addresses. 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24, 192.168.3.0/24, 172.20.21.0/24, 172.20.22.0/24, 172.20.23.0/24, 10.10.1.0/24, 10.10.2.0/24, 10.10.3.0/24 what do they mean? Is this my roadblock? Frustraing as hell. Using 3rd party tethers for rooted devices has always been simple and effective. I used them on my Droid X because the built in version would drop out after 5-15 minutes and I'd have to turn it off and on to get it back. Now I just want to use my tablets. A USB tether would be fine with me if I could find one that worked on my tablet. I used to use PdaNet but it's bundled with FoxFi now. Suggestions?
