I've been trying many multiple things to get wireless tether to work. I currently have CM7 installed and have tried Wireless Tether for Root (versions 1.6, 2.0.7, and 3.1b2) and I've tried Barnacle Wifi Tether ver 0.6.7. In both apps, I can start tethering, but I can never see the phone from any other device (Win7, Evo 4G, iPod, Xoom). I also never see any data being transfered (up or down).
I swear I used to have tethering working on my Hero before, but I just cannot get anywhere with it. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make a Nandroid Backup!
Then Try Flashing a Different Rom, This way you can possibly determine if its the Rom, or whatever else that it may be!

Thanks for the suggestion. That's actually the last thing I tried before I posted my question. I tried the Toast Hero 2.4.0 ROM and that didn't make any difference. I still could not get anywhere with any wireless tether, couldn't see it, and it never reported any data transfer.
Any other suggestions?
Kushdeck ftw. I tether everyday. Great rom too.

Don't know if your Big on Sense Roms? But you could try my ExEnHeroC Rom... I'm Sure that Tether works, at least for Mostly everyone that I've spoke to! It should also work on the SenseFroyoV8.1 or V8.5 Roms too!
Also what Tether App are you using?
Good Luck!
Thanks everyone for the help. I think I figured out the issue. I think my issue is that the Hero can only do Ad-Hock connections. Am I correct in that? I was trying to connect to the Hero with another Android phone (HTC EVO) and a Xoom. It appears that neither of them support Ad-Hock connections.
Am I correct in all of this? Can the Hero support non-Ad-Hock connections?
hero only supports adhoc signals
Well, shoot. I thought for sure I tested it on a Win7 laptop and an iPad. I guess I didn't.
Does the bluetooth tether option work with the Hero? Thanks for all of your help with the WiFi option.
apple devices and windows will conect to it fine linux has issues.
I never had problems with Linux.
Oh, how I love my Evo 3D. Hotspot is so much better. Especially with 4G. I have my blue ray/ netflix player tethered to it to watch netflix.
"Damn you look even uglier in 3D"
im not sure about other linux distroes but on ubuntu at least it always just hangs on connecting then itll disconnect itself after five minutes or so. usb tether always worked fine though.
Have you tried PDAnet(Bluetooth&wired) ? If you don't want to switch ROM's just for tether. I've had it just over a year & am very happy with it especially after this last update.

Hey guys, longtime reader. I was wondering if there was an app that i could DL that would give me the funtionality of the Hero's Mobile network sharing settings? I have searched far and wide and have not seemed to find a solution for me to easily tether my PC running Ubuntu 9.04 to my G1 running Cy's 4.1.11.
Sorry if this has been discussed elswhere, and as you can see ive been a member for a long time and have never needed any help, but i have been lookin for about a week now and have only been able to find these 2 sites about it: http://joshuaredstone.blogspot.com/2009/01/bluetooth-tethering-from-ubuntu-to.html and http://www.kryogenix.org/days/2009/...thout-jailbreaking-or-installing-applications
The second one is the one im inquiring about.
thanks
Please correct me if I'm misreading you, are you looking to tether? ie. use your cell phone to get ubuntu online?
If so I use aNetshare, first result in google. It has worked best for every rom I've ran, the older RCs, cupcake and now donut. I'm roaming 99% of the time so that may be why the other more popular ones give me trouble. idk...
For any of them to work you'll need root and su permissions. There is a paid app out there which claims to tether w/o root or su. I think through usb.
yah im slightly confused as to what exactly it is you are looking for as well...but the one im using is called PdaNet just google it and its one of the first choices.
its free.
it claims it works without root, i wouldnt know cuz im rooted =] but you can try!
it works via usb so it charges the phone while you're surfin =]
EDIT....heres the link. http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php
PS. my bad...didnt realize you were already running cyan =]

sorry if i wasnt clear before but i have Ubuntu and want to know how to tether my G1 through bluetooth using Ubuntu....i cant get netshare to work through Ubuntu. how did you get it to work?
bluetooth, you got me there... sry
Ya, sry no idea how to tether via bluetooth. I really only use wifi. Dunno why(maybe because of high data traffic) but my phone would constantly die while tethered and charging via usb.
Other than getting ubuntu to see&install my wireless card(nothing to do with my phone) I don't remember having any problems getting it to see or connect to my phone.
Or am I still confused and what you're really trying to do is use the internet you already have working on ubuntu to get you phone online?
for whatever reason my Ubuntu 9.04 does not automatically read my phone (Tmobile G1) as a modem through the usb. whenever i configure the steps (http://technologyheaven.com/2009/08/27/phoneasmodem/) to get it to read my phone it still says not connected even though it IS connected. I know the usb ports work cause i can get it to mass storage...just not modem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thx!
it's been a long while since I used USB tethering (anyone remember tetherbot & socks proxies). You may need to have the android sdk installed or atleast know how to communicate with your device via console. Connecting as a mass storage device and as a modem are two different things, so one may work great while the other still needs more setup.
Hopefully someone else with more experience can chime in.. please.. anyone...
I don't know a ton about cyan's roms but I'm assuming they come rooted by default. Is there a reason you don't want to use the wifi method for the time being?
edit: fwiw, you can use the wifi method while charging via usb. But, with heavy traffic(downloading huge files consecutively) the usb may not be able to keep up with the battery usage.. especially if on a 3g network. Using the stock charger & wifi on 3g the battery actually gets a little charge(power supply is ~500mA on usb, ~1A on charger). Either way, usb or wifi, usb or charger, turn off your screen for best results.
Im surprised no one mentioned Wireless tether for root users:http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
supports both wifi and bluetooth.
@B3astofthe3ast, cool I didn't know that(no bt on my laptop, ya it's kinda old heh). For whatever reason on several different roms I get terrible data when using that app, it might be because I'm 100% roaming with no 3g ever. Tethers to pc fine just 9/10 doesn't seem to be able download stuff.
thx, but i have that (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/). anyway, im thinking its got something to do with my comp and not the phone itself, seeing as i can get on internet with windows just fine. Im just trying to move away from windows and to Ubuntu.
p.s. i dont have a wireless card in my self built computer, thats why i dont use wifi!
I'm running Ivan's .8t2 and was able to get the wireless tether to work with no problems.
Wired tether is a different issue. I've got the latest HTC Sync loaded which is supposed to have the appropriate driver for XP sp3 I just can't get it to connect or even recognize the "eris network". The app fire up fine on the Eris, but it's like I'm missing some network setup on the XP.
I've done a google search and have not found anything too helpful. Mostly iPhone to Mac stuff.
Thanks in advance.
I've been trying to figure out why its not working. the kernel may need to be patched, and I know the app is supposed to let you know if the kernel is incompatible. I'll look into the kernel issue, but be patient with me as I'm still learning this dev thang!
in the meantime I have been running the KaosLegendary 0.8 rom and use mobile network sharing under wireless and network settings.
Thanks. FYI, there is no such setting I can find with Ivan's ROM.
Sent from my Eris using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
yeah, you wont find that feature on an Eris based rom, I'm gonna see if I can add it tho.
on any phone, root or not, you could just download the "easy tether" app from the market. does wired tether for free, and is really really easy to set up.
Thanks to both for the help. The easy tether did the trick.
I had a feeling there was something missing from the laptop's side.
My Mom thanks you, too. Now the laptop can be taken to her place so she can Skype with her grand daughter and great grand daughter.
I'm starting this thread to see if anyone else has suddenly found themselves without the ability to use Wireless Tether for Root Users. I've used several ROMs, several kernels and several versions of WTfRU. I've been able to tether for since the day I rooted my phone. I don't use it that often and never have gone over the 5G cap that Sprint puts on our "unlimited" data service. I've wiped and flashed countless times since finding myself unable to tether. It's been a frustrating ride and I was wondering if I was alone.
ROMs I've used:
DamageControl 2.08.1
DamageControl 2.09.1
Darchdroid 2.7
Froyo AOSP 2.2
Cyanogenmod 2.2
Kernels I've used:
The stock kernels with the above ROMs.
Darch's 710 and 768 OC'd kernels.
WTfRU versions I've used:
1.06
2.02
2.05
I can't pinpoint the day that it stopped working for me. All I know is that one day I needed it and it wasn't working anymore. I can see the SSID of the network, but when I connect to it it just spins and times out. I've turned off the encryption. I've turned off the access control. I've even tried leaving my phone and WTfRU on stock settings, not even changing the SSID. I've tried everything I know how to do and I simply can't get this working again.
My phone will connect to other wireless networks and I can surf/chat/etc. My phone uses the 3G connection to do the same things just fine. My computer will connect to the same wireless networks my phone will and I can surf/chat/etc.
I can't imagine that Sprint would be able to block my computer from even connecting to my phone as a wireless hot spot. I could understand if they found a way to block the data traffic knowing that someone was rooted and using their phone as a hot spot, but not connecting to the hot spot itself.
I'm just hoping I didn't burn something up...

That's what I'm afraid of. I don't want to replace it, though. Last time I did that, they made me wait another year to upgrade. My upgrade is in October and I want to get an Evo... or whatever the next big thing that Sprint announces is. I was going to give this phone to my girlfriend so she could get rid of her f**king Palm Pre. On top of that, I can't just walk in and say, "Hey, my rooted phone that I'm using to wireless tether my computer to your network won't allow me to do this anymore. Could you replace it for me?"
ha!
I sold my Evo on Ebay for about $750 dollars..The Hero does almost everything the Evo does....except that we don't have two cams and a killer processor..
which ROM are you using tho?
Right now I'm using the Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 Test 4 that Darch has been working on with other people... and I'm not sure whom. I just got excited for Froyo and uploaded it. Anyway, that's the one I'm using now. I've also, just today while fighting this issue, tried DamageControl 2.08.1 and 2.09.1. I went back to Cyanogenmod, though, because I'm digging it.
I know this won't be much help, but... I'm not sure what I did but it's working now. Yes, I know... big help.
In the past 48 hours I've done everything I listed above. I also updated my PRL. I wiped data and Dalvik many times. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I even turned it on and off again like Roy told me to. I also shook a voodoo doll at it and cursed at it in every language I know. I'm not sure which one did it, but it's working now.
Try PDANet Free from the market, and dont use the tether or share internet option, just hook it up as a disk drive and launch PDANet on your comp and on your phone. works flawlessly for me.
easytether is much cheaper if you go that route.
I had this problem as well, it depends on what version you are using. the one in the market no longer works for heros, you have to go to the wifi tether website and download 1.6, the latest version that works with the hero.
There is no 5GB cap on the unlimited data plan.

I actually have a similar problem that may end up being related somehow: I am able to start the Wireless Tether, haven't yet tested the connectivity with another device, but the phone locks up when trying to stop the tethering. I have tested with several ROMS and with each and every ROM I have tested it works fine... Until I apply the "damage537.zip", "damage710.zip", "damage710v2.zip", or "damage768.zip" OC Kernels.
As far as I can tell they're all just variations of the same Kernel, set to different OC stats out-of-the-box, so to speak.
I'm a troubleshooter by nature, so I've devoted some thought to this problem. Here's what I've come up with so far:
I perform full wipes (data, Dalvik, SD:ext, battery, and rotate) before installing any ROM.
Th ROMS I've tested so far are: Fresh Hero 2.3.3, Fresh Toast v21 heroc, Hero.C.Sprint_2.27.651.6 Deodexed, RegawMOD v2.1r, RegawMOD v2.1t
With each and every ROM tested: the full wipe was done; the ROM applied; the default version of Wireless Tether for Root tested successfully; the Wireless Tether updated from Market; tested successfully; the OC Kernel applied (each of the four mentioned above tested;WITHOUT performing another wipe first); tested UNSUCCESSFULLY.
Am I doing something wrong in these steps as listed? Are there other OC Kernels available somewhere that can be tested? How about some more ROMS (when's that Wiki going back up??? )

I wasn't using one from the Market. I went here and downloaded wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk. As I said above, this always worked for me before. I wasn't sure why it quit working. It's working again now, though, but it seems to be a bit... strained. Getting it to connect is wonky, but when it does connect it works fine. Still not sure what's going on there.

Read your service agreement. I pulled this directly off the service agreement on the website for the "unlimited" data plans:
Data Usage Limitation (Mobile Broadband Cards, USB Modems, Embedded Modems and Phone-As-Modem):The amount of data transmitted over our network is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred; and to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if usage either exceeds (a.) 5GB/month in total, unless specified otherwise or (b.) 300MB/month while off-network roaming. 1024KB equal 1MB. 1024MB equal 1GB.
I'm using tnt lite 3.1.4, also had vegan, but none could do anything with my 3g sticks. Following different forums, I see most devices can (at least some specific sticks). Has anyone managed to set up a 3G conection? Is there a how to I could follow? What chipset the stick had?
Thanks,
T.
I tried a sprint usb aircard.. no go..
The only way I have been able to get a 3G connection is to wirelessly tether to my DroidX work phone...
1) Install Z4root on the droid and run it to root the phone
2) Install wifi tether on the droid and set up a wep key and ssid
3) Turn on the wifi tether
4) The table sees this wifi "router" or connection, I set the wep key on that connection, the two units negotiate an IP, and zap, it has 3G through the droid
Not sure if this is helpful, but that is what I had to do in my own situation.
if it's in the kernel, it should seriously work, but someone has to build it. there's absolutely no reason for this not to work if someone builds it -- it has conceptually worked in linux for years.

I can build the kernel but I believe we need to add some stuff in initrc for the usb to connect to serial (like ttyUSB). Once I get another Gtab, I'll look into this.

exactly man, thanks for stepping up! this will be ultimately useful on many different devices with usb host features, and shouldn't be ridiculously difficult to get going, and gain some real cred with the tablet community, especially now as we're the first with this new tegra2 platform, with over 20-30 new devices coming soon. i'm unsure of how many are wifi-only, but the ability to merely jack in with a 3g/4g usb modem would be ultimately useful to many, and will save a ton of money for folks.

The stick is probably seen in the kernel. The other parts, Networkmanager, dialier, ppp are not on the tab. They would have to be recompiled for the arm processor and I'm not sure what other work is needed.
Thanks Clemsyn. Using your latest kernel with Vegan B5.1. I bought a Novatel USB727 (Verizon) stick off ebay (built in Linux support) just to try this out. Would gladly test if needed.
I would also be happy to test with ATT and Verizon 3G USB modems...
Update:
Built a kernel with 3g USB support, used my friend's Verizon Mifi, plugged it in the Gtab and it turns on, Dmesg shows it is detected as Novatel wireless and shows it's serial info. That's about it, can't browse and use it. Any ideas?
I'll try my usb modem using the ubuntu load. It should have the other networking parts to dial and connect.
In the ubuntu load, networkmanager is not supported yet so usb modems are still on hold.
Yes please, we need this. I have a sprint card from work and would love to ditch the laptop when travelling. Clemsyn, I could send you a copy of sprint smart view 3g manager if you think it would help.

Same here. I've been using Wireless Tether on my rooted Droid X with an unlimited 3G data plan for several weeks and it is pretty sweet. And like you said, since I have my phone with me all the time anyway, this seemed like an obvious solution.
I would be interested in the progress of this usb effort since my carrier now offers 4G modems.
Does anyone have any idea if the gtablet will tether to the blackberry

Excuse me if this has already been presented in another thread, but I have not been able to find an answer to the following question.
I have a rooted htc hero with NFX-sprint Stock 2.32.651.2.ODEX.A2sd rom.
I am trying desperately to tether the bluetooth with my new honeycomb Xoom Wifi only with Wireless Tether.
I am able to get the Wireless Tether App to work, but I cannot get the Xoom Wifi only to give me a tethering option.
Has anybody with a rooted hero got the Xoom Wifi only version to tether with their HTC Hero. If so, what rom are you using and what did you do to get it to work. Again this is the Xoom Wifi only not the Xoom with 3g and Wifi (I guess there are some differences in the hardware and software).
Thanks.
Hero only broadcasts wifi in ad-hoc, check your settings on xoom. I don't have one, but maybe it's a simple fix? Otherwise if xoom has usb you could just wired tether.
sent from a series of tubes.
don't look for a tether option.... start wireless tether on your hero , then open wireless settings on your xoom and look for the Android Tether wireless network and connect.

I don't have the Xoom, but I do have the Archos 101 which is 2.2 not Honeycomb. I was able to bluetooth tether with the Wireless Tether App. I was using aospCMod 3/24. I have since changed ROMs and haven't tried to tether. I will do it this evening when I get home and document the steps I do to get it to work.
I am thinking that I paired the devices first before I did anything with the tethering. Then once I started the Wireless Tether App with Bluetooth I had to go into the tablet's wireless settings and select Bluetooth tether. I know it saved a lot of battery on my phone over tethering WiFi. The Archos doesn't have a GPS antenna and I was able to share the GPS too, which worked pretty slick.
needed a new rom
Flashed CM7 new from and bluetooth tether now works...
Must be in the rom's kernel...

Greeetings to all. I"ve been here before and thought it would be a good time to join. I managed to tether my wi-fi xoom to my Sprint Hero yesterday via BT pan after flashing cm7, (stable). This may help? I'm not a tech guy, just like having the ability to tether and do things my way. Don't know if all these steps are necessary.....but it's what worked for me.
1. Downlaoded and saved Cyanogen mod update-cm-7.0.2-Heroc-signed.zip from this link.
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/20126-cyanogenmod-7-for-the-htc-hero-cdma-v702-25-april-2011/
You will also need to download the google addon pack from that site and save it.......gapps-gb-20110307
2. From Rom Manager, (free version), I created a nandroid backup.
3. Mounted and saved that back-up to my computer, then deleted everything on my sd card and computer just to be safe.
4. Formatted and partitioned my sd card using rom manager, then did a hard boot.
5. Mounted copied update-cm-7.0.2-Heroc-signed.zip to sd card
