Abyone else have issues with the speaker? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Even on my bed in my room alone the volume level has to be at around 70-100 percent to hear everything corectly. Below 50 percent than forget it!
Is this just me or do all captivates do this?

Odd .. mine seems just dandy
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Mine seems to have a short in it... some times the speaker will go out and then return after a quick tapping on the back of the phone

I just this minute received the warranty replacement for my Captivate on which the speaker did not work. It would sometimes work for the ringtone on an incoming call. It usually would work when I started to listen to mucis but wouldn't make it through one song before cutting out.
Can't wait to find out if I have an improved GPS!

Does anyone ever have like a static type of sound with certain MP3s or when talking on speaker?

Yeah its weird.. Hopefully we have some sort of benchmark to tell if we have functional speakers.

I've had two replacement speakers from Samsung. Still the speaker goes out from time to time and have to tap on it. Right now I have a lil peice of paper keeping pressure on it behind the battery cover. Seems to work for me
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App

My speakers goes out all the time definitely a problem with the captivates pushing on it gets it working I use to have a small piece of a old credit card between the cover and speaker just enough no to muffle the sound. Worked for awhile just got tired of having to mess with it when the phone would freeze.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

First thing top try would be to tap the speaker firmly. I know it sounds weird but tell that to ATT

"This is from a Samsung Rep plug and unplug your headset 6 times then blow into the hole reboot phone." Hahahaha I actually thoughtthis worked but after a day same problem.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Update**** after failed attempts to get a free replacement from att and since I'm out of warranty. Feeling a little confident successfully replace the glass on a iPod touch I took the captivate apart following a members tear down. After taking it apart and getting to the speaker I noticed before unscrewing that it was loose. So unscrewed it messed around with the housing didn't see anything wrong popped it back on place and screwed it back down. I also added a couple of paper squares I cut out and slipped them onto the top part of the phone when you snap back the back cover to give it some added support. I had my speaker go out countless times during the day. its been a month and haven't had a speaker issue.

My SGS metal frame frame is loose. Is yours?

I've had a GT-I9000 SGS for about 4 months now. In terms of software and speed I'm happy after rooting and applying a lag fix.
The annoyance now is that the metal frame around the phone feels loose. So that always as I hold the phone to press the up or down volume or the on/off button, it always squeaks. Does your phone have the same problem? I've considered sending it back but I wanna know if mine is the rule or an exception.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Mine is fine, sent it to repair or put a silicon case in it to avoid the effect

No problem here. But are you sure its metal? Mine feels like plastic and as my phone hit the table and then the ground it scratched on it like on plastic.
Mine battery is loose though, fixed it with a piece of plastic too
Good to know... Seriously considering sending it back. Anyone else?

Same here, but it was the battery cover at its border where it touches the phones frame.
Try it without the battery cover. Still the same?
yep i have this problem, its abit spongy wen you push it.
Well, trying without the back cover does make a difference. Not 100% perfect but much better. In the end I've just discovered the reason. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll just get an extra cover.

Repair Headphone Jack
Had problems with D1 phone jack, and D3 also. To me it is a matter of thickness of the male jack. I have real nice Sony ear buds but the jack cuts out, move it and is good for short while. I pinched the jack to make it oblong, very desperate move. Cuts out much less, but still kinda crapy. I have an older Sony ear buds and the jack is thicker and have no problems. Even at the gym.
Bottom line is cheesy, cheap parts there on that Motorola.

This happened to me twice. So, I guess that should be +2!
The plug would stop snapping in. I thought for sure I had broken the jack. But after a little close inspection, a flashlight, toothpick and can of duster I was able to get it working good as new again.
some days ago i was looking around the internet and find these
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Droid-3-Teardown/6108/1
so some days later i was funny enough to open my Droid3, too.
and then i was able to get some more pocket lins out of the headphonejack.
i was thinking its already clean but these wasnt visible from the top.
and now all is woorking fine

Does any one else have an issue with the sound out of the ear piece crackling. It is sometimes worse than others. I have rooted so the warranty is out of the question. Any thoughts or solutions?

I had the same problem with my speaker & I thought it was the speaker going out! I installed Speaker Cleaner by Nine Six Apps and just clicked "Activate" after opening the app. A tone was emitted and the phone vibrated for a few seconds and my crackling speaker issue was 100% resolved. I was skeptical and figured it was BS, but I can verify that it works! Thanks again myfishbear!

Mine has crackled off and on since I bought it. Sometimes it was just a little bit, sometimes not at all. I contemplated using insurance but I don't actually call with it enough to risk the dreaded "refurbish lottery." Unfortunately, shortly after the ICS update the speaker went from cracking now and then to crackling constantly. It's very harsh clipping sound and I hate it. I have the full insurance and I'd consider having it replaced at this point, but the "root watermark" they added with ICS will probably cause my phone to be rejected from warranty qualification... even though this is a wide spread mechanical design flaw that's unrelated to rooting. Maybe I can hope the phone gets stolen.

I had to warranty a phone for loss of microphone and loss of eventual earpiece.
What I found (in looking at dis assembly videos) is that the earpiece (and possibly speaker/mic) are not hardwired but actually have pressure contacts to flex circuits that can get iffy.
I found that cleaning my speaker/microphone/earpiece with a strong neodymium magnet drew out all sorts of ferromagnetic materials and solved a lot of the crackling issues.
I haven't had an issue since. I clean it about once a month however I'm in a high steel dust environment from time to time.
Cheers,
Hope I dont experience this issue

Camera ring

OK so today I pulled my phone out of my pocket and oddly enough, the silver ring around my lens was stuck to my case. (I like to keep my phone protected. Sue me.) It was glued on (cheaply) and wasn't even metal.
Has anyone else had this happen?
Sent from my LT30p using xda app-developers app
No, my ring is intact
Same happened to me, after 2weeks. Now the back is ugly
I dont use a case btw, i dont know when.i t fell of, it was just gone.

I lost the ring at the audio Port. Luckily I'm getting a new one in a few days (due to a other malfunction in the device which they can't fix, so I'm just getting a new one xD)
Now I'm hoping it will still have unlockable boatloader!

I pulled my phone out of my pocket yesterday to find the camera ring stuck to my finger, grrrr it is just cheap plastic, I was able to stick it back on at the time but fear the initail adhesive has been comprimised it will only be a matter of time before this disappears. But to me fair I dont think the phone with the ring missing affects the asthetics of the device in too significant a way.
I agree completely on this. The phone is beautiful enough, IMO. The ring is simply an accessory. I was just wondering who else has had this happen.

The 'metal' ring around the camera lens of my Xperia T fell off too. Unfortunately, I didn't notice it happen, so it's now missing.
I contacted Sony Support via a web chat - they wanted me to send it in for service, but it is too much hassle for a cosmetic problem - I was hoping they could send me a replacement part that I could fit myself.
I think what happened is the phone got warm while in use - this would heat the glue up and cause the adhesive to loosen.
In My Xperia T also the camera ring is missing.... Where to buy it.... ?

Same just happend to me today
i do still have the plastic ring though. Maybe going to try super glue it (hoping i don't spill any on the lens )

[Q] Are the speaker grills supposed to be removable?

My Nexus 6 from Sprint was just delivered. I quickly opened the box and removed the plastic screen cover. I then started to pick a little at one of the speaker grills to make sure there wasn't some plastic on them and it popped out! I quickly put it back in place and it seems to be staying though I'm afraid to pick at it again to see just how well it is in there.
Did I just break my new phone or are removable speaker grills a feature? Perhaps for cleaning out the speaker hole and such?
I don't think that's a feature.
Do they still work?
My, my.. hopefully it's just your unit and this doesn't become a widespread issue.

Yes, the speakers work great. The grills aren't actually grills they're solid pieces of plastic. So, I presume they need to be somewhat loosely installed in the speaker hole to allow air to pass through. I didn't get a good look but it didn't appear as though I'd broken any plastic hooks or anything.

Sounds like it just pops in to secure it in place. I wouldn't worry about it, you do have a full warranty if you ever have a problem.
Well, put the phone in my pocket today and the same speaker grill came off. Looks like I broke it. I'm going to try and get the phone replaced under warranty. Failing that it probably wouldn't be too hard to superglue it back in.
youngm
I never thought of applying superglue on a"high end" device.
I believe the grill design was made to direct the sound waves and also used to not allow the screen to touch the surface it was resting on

Well, you're not alone. My Blue 32 from ATT has a loose speaker grill at the top. I am not sure if it was like that when I got it, or if a week of putting it in the pocket and taking it out caused it.

Mine still is too. Way past the regular return policy now... Still trying to decide if I will do a warranty claim through Moto. It's been like this for a while and I was kinda waiting for it to fall off, but it just hasn't yet! I have been putting it in and out of my pocket like normal and have not been gentle either...

I don't really get much in the way of dust in the N6 grills. I can usually blow it out with just my own breath.
My Nexus 4 was TERRIBLE about that though. The speaker grill on that thing always looked gross.

I'm interested there is a guide to remove and put it back of speaker grill and there is a guy who said that he changed this piece of plastic on MOTO X 2014 with the nexus one where can i buy this plastic?
Or maybe i can just attach double side tape and leave little hole for voice? It's drives me crazy it's shacking
