[Q] SGS (2.3.3) 3G Disconnects (weak siginal) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just i have a few SGS's and i just installed 2.3.3 on one of them and the problem is it disconnects from the wireless network when the signal gets low.
Side by side the signal levels between the the 2.2.1 and the 2.3.3 units have the same db level, but the 2.3.3 will declare the signal strength is too low and disconnect alot before the 2.2.1
Correct me if im wrong but this version of gingerbread uses the nexus s kernel right? And i've seen lots of complaints about weak 3G on those phones, and google has given up on making a fix.
Any help/insight appreciated

I know, i wave the same problem, it would be nice to know why!

Hi,
what settings do you have in settings->display->energy savings (o sth like this - I am using polish version). There is an option to save energy based on LCD, but... it saves energy probably in more than LCD areas...
When I have bought the phone - I was very confused/upset when my SGS can not use 3G nor HSPA... instead of H displays G (or sometimes E) on connection icon. I suuposed it is broken, when compared with my collegues phone (he had H icon)...
Than I found the solution - switched off energy savings, and than my phone started works well with High speed connection - chech this out...
regrads.
ps. I am using android 2.2

ok, for america its call power saving mode, i'm gonna try it to see
Edit: I try and doesn't work for me...

FIXED
I found a really good fix that has been working awesome. I went and installed a new modem kernel using clock work mod.
I get great signal (haven't lost signal yet), gps, im always connected to data.
Just go on here, download the appropriate kernel and install.
My favorites are I9000UGJL2 and I9000XXJVK. Play around, see what works best in your area.

[Q] poor signal strength on Galaxy S

the signal strength on my galaxy s does not improve beyond -81dbm ... it degardes to -111dbm or so ..at times while speaking it goes in a silent mode .
is there any fix available or any likelihood of it being availble in near future .
i compared signal strength with blackberry phone at same place and same operator ....it was -67dbm.
huge difference ???
can someone help with suggestion or shall i sell this device asap.
yeah i got the same problems .. that really sucks .. :/ sometimes i loose signal completely
Different technology will always fair differently in various situation - meaning that the Galsxy will have a worse signal in some situation, but a better signal in others. If you are finding that you are not satisfied with it, best to sell it.
same for me its not better then iPhone 4 then...
somebody has to say it; "you're holding it wrong"
it goes to 105 dmb before 111
still have signal at 111
after that it goes to signal lost (tries to downgrade to 3G/2G before)
personally i've a hard time making it lose signal. when i already at -105 i can by covering it with hands then putting my hands in a box or covering on top with my body (yeh i look dumb when i do that)
otherwise i can't
for the GPS it's another story.. it cuts when you touch the screen sometimes..
Experienced poor signal strength myself, try using country specific modem when flashing via Odin, You can flash Modem itself to try out which one works best.
Tried flashing multiple modems on my phone and some seems to work better than other, could just be a placebo effect though o.o
does that mean it is a hardware issue or can this be improved by software upgrade..
Recevier senstivity is mobile's basic functionality , manufacturer's shall not compromise with this basic parameter .
I have checked signal strength at various locations but it never improves from -81dbm
Yeah, if you try and flash a CSC that's meant for your region may help.
Request if some one can help with procedure to flash.
Well not only your CSC but a newer MODEM file would help!

Also I've found if it will help you JPC modem so far for me is best in the UK on O2 (that includes testing quite a weak JPH modem file imo)
i would like to improve my samsung s1 android signal

[Q] Experts needed. Since 2.3.3, Wifi signal tend to be low.

Can someone give me a good answer about what happened to WiFi signal in 2.3.3
I used to have maximal WiFi signal when working with 2.2.1
After installing Darky's v10.1 - 2.3.3 ROM, WiFi signal tend to be low (1-2 bar only)
Other laptops / phones (not android) report maximal signal of WiFi.
I tried almost all possible modems - I almost sure it's not related to Modem.
Can someone provide a good answer what happened ?
Is it a report problem only ? Is it a ROM issue ?
(I cannot find a good answer anywhere)

[Q] ICS333 2.0.1: slow internet

Hi there, this is my first post and I am new to flashing mobile phones.
I just flashed my i9000 with ICS333 2.0.1 (build IMM76L). Runs nicely most of the times, so: thanks a lot for that !
But: when I start web browsing, pages are shown extremly slow even with HSDPA.
On another i9003 with the same phone provider, this problem does not occur (runs smothely with HSDPA). And that did not happen with the same device before flashing.
Makes no difference if I enable or disable HSPA or "just 2 G networks" in settings.
Any hints?
I'm using same rom with the JW4 modem..... search for cm7/9 flashable JW4 modem...JW4 is the latest modem for i9000...I found it better than JVU..(standard on ics333)
Forgot to say: need it for Germany. Is the modem u mentioned the best for Germany?
Its for Europe...so in theory.. yes it should be fine.
JW4 is indeed better(Vodafone NL, I defin. got better signal, wifi speed and gps with it). You can also get it from here:
http://www.wuala.com/Nonamed/Modems ICS?lang=nl
Ok, I now have installed jw4-modem, and it runs a little better. Most of the time the ping now is much better in every web app.
But: the signal strenght went from about 85 (before installing the new modem) to now over 95. That seems a little contradictory to me?
And: at the same location the signal strength sometimes decreases to over 110 so again web services are not reachable, so it´s varying very much.
Any more hints?

try JQ1 or JVQ modem, those are the best for TMobile Germany and Germany in general.

Hi .. other than the JW4 (that I'm not sure it could solve the problem), I have improved the speed deleting the (modified, for no ads) hosts file in the folder /system/etc, because it's VERY (almost scarely!) large (>500kbyte!!!) .. that's means everytime we ping for a site, the browser has to search if the domain it's "mapped" in the hosts file ...
just to be sure to do not loose any functionality, in case just remember to create a new hosts file with only this content:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
I think that my internet experience now boosted a bit just confirm me if it works also for you! (obviously you will display ads now!!)

[Q] Switching from Inspire back to Captivate - have questions

Hi all, hope you're enjoying your Sunday.
I have a few questions. I left my Captivate because a) the pentile display on the AMOLED Captivate ticked me off (not a big issue), b) the GPS didn't work on my Captivate, c) the GPS didn't work on my Captivate (repeated for emphasis), and d) I got so confused with what radio, ROM, etc to use to make my Captivate work best.
So here's my question - what is the best radio for GPS and phone calls that has at&t 850 without going through a bunch of mess to activate it, how does JB run on it (it is nice on the Inspire but the RAM is faster in the Captivate than on the Inspire plus from what I know, JB on Captivate the camera actually works as the Captivate has official CM10 support which the Inspire does not), and do we still have to reset the GPS to make it work again? Because I seriously had to do it every day.
The Captivate exceeds the Inspire in every way except for a) terrible GPS, b) less RAM, and c) ... there really isn't a C... battery life is amazing on the Cap, the 16GB in the cap is awesome, I don't particularly like the pentile display but at least I can see it in the sun...
Basically, can someone please tell me how to get my Captivate working with GPS and JB lite - oh and the radio - I'm in Colorado but I'm moving to Saint Louis... signal strength on the Captivate has always been higher (dB to dB) than the Inspire and plus they didn't make the stupid mistake that HTC did where the charger is not only right next to the antenna, its not shielded either... It took me many dropped calls on the charger to figure out what was going on!
So yeah. Radio, ROM (preferably JB because I love the voice commands), and GPS.
Thank you!

I am currently running Hellybean with the i9000UGKG3 modem and I have no trouble with my GPS. I've been using that particular modem for quite a while and have had no trouble with it. In fact I live in Missouri and a couple months ago traveled to Denver and never had any problems.
Edit: I even just installed GPS Test and walked out in my back yard. My phone and a lock on 8 different birds in about 30 seconds showing a 30 foot accuracy.

Thanks m1batt1 - Right now I'm testing out CM10 and loving it... Still on the JK3 modem... For some reason the GPS and battery work just fine on CM10.

Poor antenna performance CM10

Hey guys,
I noticed when I went from CM9 to CM10, my antenna performance is really suffering. Its using XXJVT
For example, on the home network, I could download at 2MB/s, now I'm lucky to get 150KB/s.
Also, my GPS signal is very bad, using google maps, it will drop out all the time.
Not sure whats the go, I opened up the phone, antenna cable is plugged in so must be the modem firmware?
Should I somehow flash the modem back to whatever was in CM9?
I'm from Australia, cheers
OK, we'll I've tried different modems, still seem to have the same issue (with download speed anyway).
Basically I check my wifi, it will say its connected at 50Mbps etc, but when I go to speedtest.net, I get 800Kbps all the time.
Is this a CM10 issue?
I remember I could DL on wifi at 2MB/s, now its around 100KB/s... sigh
Try DXJV9 modem and SuperNexus Rom. Works fine for me.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
I just installed CM10.1 nightly (4.2.2) (did a wipe data + cache), also the just installed I9000XWJW1 modem.
I've been reading people from Melbourne using XWJW1 over XXJW4... however sometimes it sounds like they've got XXJW1, when its XWJW1, unless I'm wrong.
Anyways, my WAN speed seems fine again, I don't know if it was the modem or the rom doing it, as my modem/cable was out for 2 hours. No idea but I'm happy its better.
Speedtest via WAN I get 21000Kbps, for the network I have pretty bad coverage but I can get up to 1000Kbps, but usually around 300Kbps.
I'll test the GPS over a week or so and see what happens.
Hrm, still have issues with my GPS
Doesn't seem to find a signal, and if it does, it disconnects and looses it very quickly.
Maybe its hardware?
Whats that program I've seen screenshots of that show how many GPS satellites your connected to and its strength?
Cheers
Fixed my GPS issues, thread below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697217
Works now in the car. It won't pick up GPS indoors too well, using the app "GPS Test" a lot of the bars are grey, but outdoors is better
Can get 8-10 satellites
Just remove the rubber conductive pad, add solder blob. Don't bother with transferring the un-used spring/tab, its too large, hard and a waste of time, I tried
There's also this thread but I didn't read/do anything here.
