[Q] ICS333 2.0.1: slow internet - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, this is my first post and I am new to flashing mobile phones.
I just flashed my i9000 with ICS333 2.0.1 (build IMM76L). Runs nicely most of the times, so: thanks a lot for that !
But: when I start web browsing, pages are shown extremly slow even with HSDPA.
On another i9003 with the same phone provider, this problem does not occur (runs smothely with HSDPA). And that did not happen with the same device before flashing.
Makes no difference if I enable or disable HSPA or "just 2 G networks" in settings.
Any hints?

I'm using same rom with the JW4 modem..... search for cm7/9 flashable JW4 modem...JW4 is the latest modem for i9000...I found it better than JVU..(standard on ics333)

Forgot to say: need it for Germany. Is the modem u mentioned the best for Germany?

Its for Europe...so in theory.. yes it should be fine.

JW4 is indeed better(Vodafone NL, I defin. got better signal, wifi speed and gps with it). You can also get it from here:
http://www.wuala.com/Nonamed/Modems ICS?lang=nl

Ok, I now have installed jw4-modem, and it runs a little better. Most of the time the ping now is much better in every web app.
But: the signal strenght went from about 85 (before installing the new modem) to now over 95. That seems a little contradictory to me?
And: at the same location the signal strength sometimes decreases to over 110 so again web services are not reachable, so it´s varying very much.
Any more hints?

try JQ1 or JVQ modem, those are the best for TMobile Germany and Germany in general.

Hi .. other than the JW4 (that I'm not sure it could solve the problem), I have improved the speed deleting the (modified, for no ads) hosts file in the folder /system/etc, because it's VERY (almost scarely!) large (>500kbyte!!!) .. that's means everytime we ping for a site, the browser has to search if the domain it's "mapped" in the hosts file ...
just to be sure to do not loose any functionality, in case just remember to create a new hosts file with only this content:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
I think that my internet experience now boosted a bit just confirm me if it works also for you! (obviously you will display ads now!!)

Diamond internet connection problem

Sorry, if this was asked before, I did not find anything.
I have got the problem that a 3G connection frequently stops transferring data. The phone is still connected, but there is no more data transferred to the browser/youtube client et cetera. The only thing that helps is to disconnect and restart the connection.
Is this a known problem with some firmware versions or is my device broken?
i've got the same problem...
what is your provider? mine is o2 germany, maybe its a problem with their network...
also try a radio-update, it got a little better after that for me
maybe you just have poor 3g signal and keep dropping?

It is not a reception problem. My provider is also O2 Germany, but I use a T-Mobile MDA Compact IV with original ROM. Should not make much difference, though.
i just had a closer look at it and i guess it just hapens when the signal changes from 3g to gprs!?
I was also testing in the last minutes
You may be right, but I just had it the other way round from GPRS to 3G.
You say the problem is still there with the most recent radio ROM? Perhaps it can be tweaked somewhere in the registry like the MTU in desktop Windows etc.
i've updated to radio v1.00.25.BS14 an hour ago and untill now there are no problems at all! hope it stays like this...
That's great news, but until now I did not dare updating inofficial ROMs
Do you know which radio ROM is included in the most recent O2 ROM? I guess the upcoming official T-Mobile ROM will have at least the same radio version.
I have been experiencing the same issue with my handset. I had put it down to the network (T-Mobile UK). I will try upgrading to another radio and see if that helps.
Cheers
Aidan

I think this issue might be related to the radio...Ive just started testing the new BS14 radio and found it much better in the UK for holding its signal.....
I think you might want to try a new ROM-Radio
Maybe I have found a solution which does not need a reflash of the device.
I would highly appreciate if you people test it and report whether I am right or not.
The problem seems to occur when the connection is switched between 3G and HSDPA. So I tried to change the HSDPA Category to a lower value, since my provider has got 3.6 Mbit/s maximum anyway.
You do this via the registry key:
HKLM/Drivers/BuiltIn/RIL/HSDPACat
My initial value was 8, which is 7.2 Mbit/s. I changed it to 5 (5 and 6 are both 3.6 MBit/s, don't know the difference, though 5 seems to work better) and had no connection drops since yesterday.
I would be interested in the initial value set in your devices as well as in the maximum speed of your networks and the values it finally works with.
Not sure what HKLM/Drivers/BuiltIn/RIL/HSDPACat change did, but it did not help the stability. Overall here's what happened:
Default value 8 - download 1.8-25Mbit per sec
Changed to 5 - download dropped to ~0.8 - 1Mbit
Changed to 6 - download speeds 1.2 - 1.5 Mbit
The most stable connection seems to be with HSDPACat 6, though is still has problems every once in a while (average ~2 hours). 5 is a least stable for some reason, it could drop a connection anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes (random).
Trying the same changes with HSUPA enabled does not do much of a difference, except for slightly better responsiveness browsing the web (pings go down to ~80ms as compared to ~120ms without HSUPA enabled)

Youtube player buffers extremely slow

Hi all,
I have this strange issue with the Youtube app on my Diamond. I posted about this in Dutty's thread and though it seems I am not the only one, no solution is knowd yet.
Here's the deal:
When I set the settings to HIGH QUALITY in the Settings dialog in the youtube app, buffering is extremely slow, it buffers with 1% intervals. I am using a high speed H network connection, and in the past I remember it would buffer with intervals of about 25-30%.
I tried different radio roms, different cooked roms (incl. stock rom/stock radio), nothing helps. It's not the locations because all other internet apps have fast internet.
Anyone knows about this? I'm kind of stuck here

+1 here! I'm using the Dutch T-Mobile with Web&Walk 1mbps internet and I have to say, that i'm indeed not satisfied with the YouTube app...
I personally think it's not the ROM or Radio, but the app itsself...
one day I compared my Youtube app with a good friend of mine with his..(Apple Iphone) and his was faster, eventhough his internet is crap speed.... about 256 kb
Anyone out here who knows about this and knows how this can be fixed?

I compared my speed with a Touch HD from a friend, same network (!), same location, both apps set to 'high quality'. Mine started buffering at 1% intervals, his buffered with 30% intervals...
Since I tried several radio roms, I tried a few complete roms (maybe my rom had an older youtube app), but every rom I tried was slow (even the stock roms).
I am completely lost here
SOLVED!
Jeroen: I finally decided to give customer support from T-Mobile a call, and guess what; they somehow downgraded me from web-n-walk plus to the normal web-n-walk.

[Q] SGS (2.3.3) 3G Disconnects (weak siginal)

I just i have a few SGS's and i just installed 2.3.3 on one of them and the problem is it disconnects from the wireless network when the signal gets low.
Side by side the signal levels between the the 2.2.1 and the 2.3.3 units have the same db level, but the 2.3.3 will declare the signal strength is too low and disconnect alot before the 2.2.1
Correct me if im wrong but this version of gingerbread uses the nexus s kernel right? And i've seen lots of complaints about weak 3G on those phones, and google has given up on making a fix.
Any help/insight appreciated
I know, i wave the same problem, it would be nice to know why!
Hi,
what settings do you have in settings->display->energy savings (o sth like this - I am using polish version). There is an option to save energy based on LCD, but... it saves energy probably in more than LCD areas...
When I have bought the phone - I was very confused/upset when my SGS can not use 3G nor HSPA... instead of H displays G (or sometimes E) on connection icon. I suuposed it is broken, when compared with my collegues phone (he had H icon)...
Than I found the solution - switched off energy savings, and than my phone started works well with High speed connection - chech this out...
regrads.
ps. I am using android 2.2
ok, for america its call power saving mode, i'm gonna try it to see
Edit: I try and doesn't work for me...
FIXED
I found a really good fix that has been working awesome. I went and installed a new modem kernel using clock work mod.
I get great signal (haven't lost signal yet), gps, im always connected to data.
Just go on here, download the appropriate kernel and install.
My favorites are I9000UGJL2 and I9000XXJVK. Play around, see what works best in your area.

[Q] Mobile data connectivity issues, which radio?

Hi guys (and girls),
I'm going slightly mad trying to figure out a stable setup for my O2X. I have been switching between the latest CM7 nightlies, and MoDaCo FR19. In general, CM7 gives me quite frequent black screens, and FR19 seems quite stable. However, there is one issue that is present in both ROMs.
I am unable to get a stable mobile data connection when I switch from WiFi. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. To get it to work again, it sometimes works to switch to 2G only (and possibly back again). I have tried several different radios recently: 218, 606, and 622, all with the appropriate RIL. The mobile data connection for 218 drops in and out at random without any clear pattern. For the other two radios switching on or off 2G only seems to achieve stable connection. However, it does not actually seem to affect whether I get a 3G or 2G signal. The display can say H or G, even when 2G only is checked. Bluetooth did not work correctly with 606.
To top everything off, the GPS does not seem to behave consistently for a all the different radio versions.
I guess that people have different experience with different radios, so which radio are the guys in Norway using? Do I really have to slog through every released radio and spend the day checking each one of them? Can I expect to find a radio/from combination that blacks to give me a stable GPS and mobile data connectivity, as well as good WiFi?
I know this has been discussed numerous times before, but people never seem to reach any conclusions. I'm just looking for advice on how to proceed to fix my problem.
I'm on cm7 .77 and i honestly havent had a blackscreen since i flashed it (yesterday morning) + battery is good now. For me this is the most stable nightly so ill stick with it for 2 weeks on my holiday )
Edit: bb .502 ril 218(i think) dont have any problems with network switching btw
Sent from my Optimus 2X using XDA App

You probably have to, yes. This sounds more like a problem with the specific coverage in your area and how the phone interacts with the cell-towers than an actual problem with the phone. You may be in an area with weak signals from several stations, you may be in an area suffering from sudden bursts of noise, there could be a lot of reasons for why this is happening.
First thing I'd try is to upgrade to the latest official firmware (10C - 0622 for Norway), just to have a baseline for comparison. In theory this firwmare (and baseband) has recently been validated by the norwegian carriers, and should have the best chance of success.
Then you should probably do a manual scan (in phone settings) for networks, and pick one manually.
Also try using the INFO menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and see if choosing a specific protocol helps.
If you're still unable to maintain a stable connection, I'd say that'd be grounds for returning the phone for a replacement.
Weak advice, I know, sometimes there just aren't any quick solutions.

Sort of. In this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035041 you'll find complete ROMs of the previous versions. Install one of those with SmartFlash, then run the LG Mobile Update tool to get the latest.

Okay, I see, downloading now. So it is good enough to use one of the smartflash files, I don't have to use nvflash?

No, you don't have to use NVFlash. The advantage of using the smartflash method is that you get a completely "factory fresh" phone, with all the stock content present (movies, music, pre-installed apps) and you're sure to get a matching baseband and ROM.
Note that you have to flash both files, both the baseband and the ROM. The LG update tool won't update if you have a "new" baseband on an old ROM.
::Trym
So the firmwares from that post do not include the baseband? Anyway, I'm currently running baseband 405, so I guess this is sufficient to get the new update. And the new update will then overwrite everything to the latest official version, both ROM and baseband, correct?

Yes, it does. Each firmware pack comes with TWO files, the baseband and the ROM. To make sure you avoid any trouble, just flash them both, though, as you say, you can probably stay on the one you have, as yes, the LG Mobile Update tool will overwrite both the baseband and the ROM with the new versions.

Flashing of old firmware, with subsequent upgrade to latest release for Norway is complete.
I got version V10c, with baseband 1035.21_20110622, kernel 2.6.32.9. My mobile data seems to be enabled as soon as I get mobile coverage (which admittedly is poor right where I live). Even though it pains me, I guess I should leave it as stock for a day or so to see how it behaves.
I guess rooting it shouldn't affect performance in any way?
My initial experience is that it is much more snappy than the stock firmware that the phone came with, but time will show

Not to my knowledge, but I'd still advise you to wait a few days while sorting out the connection issue. Not that I think rooting it would affect that one way or another, but if you can't get it work as it is, you can return the phone in the state it is now, factory fresh.

It certainly is. It also *stays* snappy over time, which can't be said for the 10a/b versions.

The first test drive with the new firmware has been completed. On the way out it switched to mobile data flawlessly, but a longer drive it started falling out and reappearing for only short periods. When we stopped at the destination seemed to stabilise with a 3G connection again.
For the return trip I selected use only 2G network. The network connection remained stable for the entire journey.
I will have to test more, but the conclusion seems to be that it has trouble switching between the 2G and 3G networks when moving. I will try the same trip with a Telenor SIM card, and with different combinations of enabling 2G and 3G modes.
By the way, what is the difference between forcing 2G in the regular settings menu and in the special information menu?

The 2G only setting in the phone menu equals the "GSM only" setting in the INFO-menu. I'm far from an expert in these matters, this thread has an overview: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=675136& of what the different modes do.
::Trym
More testing seems to indicate that as long as i leave "use 2G only" check, my mobile data connection seems to be pretty stable. It even switches between 2G and 3G, although apparently a bit more conservatively.
I guess I get to keep my phone anyway
Now for some rooting...
Just an update on the results from my testing. The second time I went out my mobile connection never appeared. This was with only 2G checked in the settings menu. In the Info menu, this corresponded to GSM only.
I then changed it to GSM auto (PRL), and then I got my intermittent mobile data again. I then change it to WCDMA preferred, and my data connection seems to be stable for now. This apparently requires much more testing...
F another chapter in the connectivity saga. Having WCDMA preferred selected in the Info menu, things mostly work, although the data connection drops sometimes.
Another problem I'm noticing with the stock ROM is that it usually is unable to reconnect to my home WiFi network when it comes within range. I have the money was selected to reconnect. Sometimes I even find it disabled in the list.

Several unique problems

Hi, I have several problems with my galaxy note that I have not been able to fix, find anything about similar problems in the Note community and I have no clue on how to solve them.
1) 3g - No matter what ROM I am on, be it GB, ICS, JB TW/AOSP, then whenever there is a 3g icon in my status bar, my internet slows down to speeds you cannot use. I once managed to try the 3g on the speedtest.net app and I got I believe 0,02/0.01 Kbps download and as you know, that is unbearable. Does anyone have any suggestions for a fix? Perhaps flash a new Modem, a new ROM, try the stock GB that I got with my carrier from where I got the phone?
2) With the WiFi at my home: If I am "far" away from the router (the router is in one corner of the house, I am on the floor above at the other corner), then I sometimes get randomly disconnected and it says in the settings "Authentication Error". Again, all ROM's. I have a very strong signal in that corner (2 or 3 bars) but I will probably just get the answer that is expected - I am too far away from the router.
3) I currently have installed TW 4.1.2 GalaxtusMod v3 XXLT5 (latest) and I have the latest (1.3.7) c.o.h.'s HelloWorld kernel flashed to the device.
I cannot "uninstall" system apps using TB or other root uninstaller apps, however I can manually remove the apps using Solid Explorer. When I try to use TB (free) then after selecting about 30 apps in the batch mode to remove, then the phone would usually crash and reboot after about 10 uninstalled apps (these apps are basic things - maps, talk, youtube, widgets etc. no important system apps). I used to simply uninstall them 5 at a time and it worked, with my current combination though it doesn't report any error at the end but the apps are still installed. So if anyone else is having problems (I have problems on any configuration in batch uninstalling a lot of apps) removing in batch apps with titanium backup or has been lucky enough to find a solution then I would be grateful for a solution or just say if it happens to you too.
Also I always do a proper clean install, with stock firmware I use Odin on the PC and I always do wipes (caches, system, data, preload etc) before flashing anything.
*edit*
4) When I am charging the phone using the stock adapter but using a different cable (same length cable in good condition) then the phone is very laggy. The interface jumps and is jittery.
Luckily I have a brother who also has a Galaxy Note and he doesn't have neither problem 1 or 4 (don't know about 2,3)

I've often been in a corner upstair floor with weak wifi signal, only 1 bar, because router is downstair. Download/Upload's are very slower than when I'm near the router but I've never got the "Authentication error" problem.
Just a witness from my own situation of wifi signal weakness.

Bump?
try different kernel/ modem combo. Most custom roms dont have modem, so if your with the same modem, that could be it. Try one for your region. see the modem thread in development section.
Now 3g,
- check your provider as well, ask them if they severed your connection. Some providers have been known to do that.
- check apn settings on phone if they are like provider
- check if your not roaming ( other network then provider)
