[Q] Best Appkiller or Program Monitor for CM7? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Best working Task killer or Program monitor for CM7? I would like something like the program monitor that touchwiz has if possible. Thanks.

Well there is a built in app killer into android which you can put a shortcut to by long pressing the screen, going to shortcut, then settings, then running services. Also read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=904023 you really should not use a task killer because it actually uses more battery...

There's a CM7 sticky for this.

[Q] Final word on task killers?

So I have heard that using a task killer app could do more harm then good. Is this true? If not, whats a highly recommend task killer app?

I read this article via a link from gizmodo and it was very informative. I was using ATK for some time and thought it was doing well. I had no idea that many of the issues I was running into were actually coming from the task killer nixing items I needed running. I realized this after I removed the task killer and installed watchdog.
I am not going to say watchdog was streamlining power house for my phone but, it did allow me to see what was really going on in a much more efficient manner. The information it provides is useful and gives a much better idea of what is consuming all those battery eating clock cycles. I feel more comfortable now knowing what is actually active and whether I need it to be.
Since the change over I have been consuming more battery power but I just changed to Cognition and I have significantly less FCs. This is on top of my recent full time GPS usage and frequent music streaming.

task killers?

can anyone recommend a good task killer? ive tried atk on 2.2 but its very sluggish. i dl task panel x and it doesnt update frequently lol. i have autokiller memory but not sure if i am using it right lol. so if anyone is using a task killer, what r u using and r u getting good results? thanks in advance!
Do not use autokiller. I can't remember what problem it causes but it does indeed cause a problem on all galaxy phones. Or at laast my fascinate

You shouldn't need one from all I've read about it.
but I use system panel to kill an app here and there.

Don't bother using a task killer. I used Advance Task Killer for the last two weeks but it probably hampered things more than it helped. Your phone will NOT slow down to a crawl. Most custom ROMs use good minfree settings that'll keep your phone snappy.
Just uninstall your task killer, or if you want to use it, turn off autostart, turn off autokill, and only use it for pesky apps that won't die.

I was using ATK and could not verify any benefit. I read the following article and gained some more understanding. I have been running without a Task Killer since and I see no loss in performance or battery life. I could say I have less FCs and more reliability with syncing email.

i have been getting random shutdown these few days (started like 3 days ago), about 1 shutdown per day. i'm not sure if it' the stock task manager, dolphin browser beta 4.0, or widget locker 1.2.7 causing it. i already removed stock task manager and downgraded widget locker to 1.2.4 to see what happens.
Task killers aren't generally needed on android. If its battery life you want then for one try not to compulsively look at your phone preventing the cpu from idling and screen from turning off. Get juice defender. It turns off data unless it is needed. Most apps don't use resorces when the phone is asleep unless they are designed to, like file sharing programs or apps that sync data in the background but there are also bad apps. In froyo Use the built in task manager (long prsss on home) to see what's running. If you havent used something in a while and don't need the process active then close it.
If it is performance you want then no task manager will help. You need to alter the minfree setting which manages memory and how apps use it. I use the one click lag fix app to do that. Other apps I used caused problems. I set the minfree to moderate. Its more agressive than stock but doesn't kill processes you might want running. Anything more agressive than that kills allshare while im streaming movies but there is a performance increase when set to optimal or strict however it is slight.

[Q] How to determine which app is draining battery

I have been looking at a few apps in the market and I'm seeing more and more suggestions that the apps are a battery drain. How are these users so sure that one particular app is killing the battery? I can't find any way to see that, only the usage setting that shows display, phone idle, wifi and stuff like that.
Are live wallpapers really a battery hog when the device is not in use (display off and no other apps running)?
I'm using Tasker and have several (ok...17) tasker widgets that manage many settings and apps. I also have a few dozen profiles that manipulate tasks that are associated with those widgets. Any consensus that Tasker is a culprit? I do use it for alot of stuff.

I'm assuming that by 'usage settings' you mean -> settings, about phone, battery usage
If so, that should give you more of a breakdown than just what you had listed there...

I think you can use task manager to see what's running. It's a lot of experimentation . I'm testing itnow and it seems ok . I did a clean install of the sense Rom..( I prefer this UI) I installed no utilities no task killer no Setcpu nothing. I did not install Google voice disabled Google talk. Left background data but unchecked autosync. I put the HTC sync widget on desktop so I can hit it ever so often when I got the itch. Keeping gps WiFi bt off till needed will report back
Searched the market and found 191 task managers. Which dev are you referring to?

[Q] Opinion: Task Manager or No Task Manager?

Hey Folks,
Just wanted to hear some opinions on whether having a task manger is worth it. I've heard from both sides of the camp, stating newer versions of android can handle the load fine, and that more and more apps are running unnecessary background services.
I just did a clean wipe and reload of CM7 and I'm wondering whether I want my advanced task manager anymore.
Thoughts?
For me, I prefer no task killer. If I must close apps I go into running services and stop them that way. Usually they stop without me doing that.
I don't use one, not needed.
i never ever felt the need of having a task killer on my Inc S
the apps close by themselves when not in use.
v6 supercharger
just use v6 supercharger it is better than all the taskillers you may find.
I don't use one. I'm running CM7 and as Saenzscene said, I stop programs in the running services menu. However I never really had the need to do it as RAM was never a problem.
But I have noticed while running certain programs that if you press the "home" button, the program may keep running in the background afterwards. Whereas if you press the "back" button it will close the program's running service. Can anyone confirm this?
Never had the need for a TaskManager with CM7 or ARHD.

I'm using advanced task killer simply to kill anything that may not be shut down even tho I mean to.
As someone said above, it's possible that some alps stay open and keep your phone awake. I have a large ignore list which I use to ensure nothing important gets closed down, only the rogue apps, now my phone never stays awake when it shouldn't.

Yes, some apps like to run as a service process if you quit the app. FriendCaster is one example. I think they do this to handle sync process in the background.
I don't need anyone!
My choice is no task manager, android is good.

Kill apps from ram for good

I have a few apps running in the background all the time. Facebook and blood and glory mainly. Is there a way to delete them for good? On Facebook I set it that no notifications and never refresh, and its still using up 12mb. Same with blood and glory. Any way to kill them for good? Is there an app maybe? Thanks.
Well, mainly in android apps have 4 components.
Two of those are Activities and Services.
The activities have UI, you can activate and use it. The services doesn't have UI since they are hidden. You can't Activate them manually and their purpse is to open the app fast. Deleting the app is the best way you can use a task manager to close them.
Advanced Task Killer, for example, has the ability to set timer for RAM clearing, you can set it to whenever you lock your screen.
if i helped you, hit the thanks button
Another way for ram.
I think of the amount of memory (ram) have effected to play game or run any application smoothly.
So If you use kernel Semaphore 2.7.4(GB) or 1.2.0 (ICS) there are choices for big memory to run application smoothly.
I want to kill an app like Facebook, and then I don't want it to run in the background after I close the app. When I kill the process , after aboit 10 seconds it goes on again!
Anyone!?
Anyone 2x?
use advanced task manager.or delete the facebook app and install fbm.it does not run in the background
I've found an useful article about Task killer apps:

Autostarts
There is an app on android market called Autostarts, it's an amazing app i've used it for over a year now and never had any problems. what it does it stops apps like facebook from starting up automaticly and keeps the app fully closed until you choose to launch it. Same goes for any other app which you choose to disable from auto-starting by itself. This is why Autostarts is so much better than say a normal task killer because apps closed by task killers restart themselves a few minutes later so your just running round in circles trying to keep the app closed probably eating up more battery trying to close it every 5 minutes than if you just left the app alone, where as with autostarts you dissable the app once then thats it it wont start until you tell it to, perfect!
Autostart sounds quite good
I'd also recommend using titanium backup to freeze the app, unfreeze when you want it and then freeze when you dont.
Autostart probably sounds like the easier option, no need to keep freezing and unfreezing, but knowing about titanium backup and freezing apps doesn't hurt
