I was wondering if Gingerbread will drop for the N1 tomorrow because the Nexus S is also releasing tomorrow. I mean like when the iPhone 3G released the updates for the iPhone 2G could be downloaded from iTunes. I know the N1 and NS are different, but we've already seen N1's on Gingerbread from Google leaked...

It's possible. But I'm guessing probably not. They need to keep gingerbread a selling point of the nexus s for a bit longer.

I'd give it a 50/50 shot of being pushed this weekend at some point. I doubt we'll have to wait another week for it to start trickling out.
We'll get it once the AOSP gets dropped. Don't even need to wait for a push.

Traditionally, we get the OTA a few weeks before the AOSP gets dropped. I have seen rumors that AOSP will happen sometime this weekend, but we've heard a lot of rumors concerning Gingerbread so far.
Hopefully it gets released this weekend. I would love to have Gingerbread on my Nexus One since I'm waiting a bit longer to get my S.

The N1 is discontinued and never sold a lot anyway. I don't think it having Gingerbread will have a noticeable impact on NS sales.
Maybe or maybe not released this weekend...Hopefully sooner than later

Yea, but having GB on our N1 might stop some making a switch to the NS.
IDK
WTF
BBQ
I doubt that many people will abandon the N1 and move to the NS *solely* because it already has Gingerbread. If they make a switch, it will likely be to take advantage of new hardware. Or something.
The OS shouldn't really be that much of a selling point (versus an N1) since we know that our devices will get the update sooner rather than later.
I got an iPhone 3G in November of 2009 (On contract) and last September I got my SGS (New off of Craigslist). I keep seeing these new and better phones coming out in the near future and I am saying to myself.
"Self, you want one of those phones".
Examples of said phones:
Galaxy S 2
i997 Infuse 4G
Optimus X2
Optimus Black
Anyway, do you get the newest thing out there or do you stick with one phone for a while?
$500-$700 is a lot to spend on a phone every year, but I love the newest gadget
If it works and does what i want then every ten years or so .
jje
for me, it is every time there is something better for my carrier 1700+2100 AWS, which usually there are not many
I usually hold as much as I can, usually it's 2 to 3 years so I can have the contracts promo's and rebates.
My last one was the good ol' HTC Vogue. Even tough HTC wasn't supporting the device since a while, XDA Devs was and I was running latest android built on it.
Since the popularity of the SGS is pretty more than the HTC Vogue, I assume we'll get amazing support from the comunity also! So I don't think I'll change until another year or two!
I must be sick or something. My SGS works great (Stock JL2, no lag fix, no custom kernel, only rooted). But I still have this little thing about wanting the newest and best.
What will the new Galaxy S2 (Or any listed phone in the OP) have that my SGS doesn't? 4.5" screen, faster CPU (By only a small bit), more MP camera, a flash? Do I really need these things?
Maybe it's a disease or something. Why can't I be happy with what I have? Maybe a woman would help? Anyone know one available?

The phone revolution has finally come to the U.S. so things will have to change...
Before all phones were crappy so it didn't really matter...now every 6 months a phone that was once new will be old news and the new ones will be must haves...
This has been the case in europe for years and so service providers can't force customers into 2 year contracts like here...most contracts are 12 months(and you can upgrade to a new phone practically free in 10mnths) and just to get people into 18 month contracts they have to offer great incentives...hopefully that will become the case here..
But to get to the point..with phones finally getting better you do feel the need to upgrade all the time...don't get carried away...think of it like with a new tv..new ones..bigger ones, faster response time, more color,3d, internet apps, usb ports...they keep adding stuff making you want the latest and the greatest...you don't need it..you want it...but don't need it...
See what your phone has..how you use it and evaluate of it meets your needs...granted now you are using it for a lot more stuff than before...gps, internet searches, facebook updates etc...suit down and think what you use your phone and if it lacks in any department...make a note of all the areas where you would like improvement and then start researching which phone would cover those specified areas..don't get carried away by features that seem cool but once you have them you will not use...(video calling for example..it is a phase..just like it was in europe and it went away fast..not everyone has it here..its not cross platform...ie pc to phone...and it telies on spotty 4g coverage or wifi..). Once you know what you need and find which phone had that...get that phone and stick with it...
I bought the g1 when it came out because I knew I would love android..I was right..after having it for almost two years I found that it was lacking speed due to cpu and lack of memory for installed apps...granted I was using apps2sd to over come its issues but this was a bypass got an issue that was there...i researched and found that the vibrant had exactly what I needed..1ghz cpu and 16gb internal memory for apps and storage...i was right..with nero v5 rom on it and an 8gb card it is amazingly fast and it does EVERYTHING I need...i don't need anything now for a long time...i want the new stuff..i don't need them...now I will wait for a phone that comes with honeycomb and performs well with it...it will be at least 6 to 8 months before I see something worth investigating which will be near my upgrade time so I don't have to spend too much money to get it (i got the vibrant for 99 bucks through amazon wireless with a2yr contact...)
Patience, good research and will power are all key...

"Wish in one hand, **** in the other. See which one gets filled first."
Lol, wish I had every new one that came out
But I renew my phone once every 2 years.
@Ian/w98seng, nope it doesn't change much with a woman around either!
I have a Nokia 6120 Classic right now from 2007 I think , but I LOVE SGS. Hope to get one as soon as possible with a contract. I didn't know about SGS 2, which is nice
Either when something better comes out or when O2 offer me an upgrade
Pretty much only upgrade when my existing contract expires and I get a discount on a new phone
OK, I'll be patient and wait a couple of yeas before I get another phone. It'll be hard and I'll cry a lot, but I'll be a good boy and wait. (Maybe)
you know you can SELL the phone, and upgrade to another phone....
that's what most people do to keep up with the latest and greatest
sell it meanwhile it stills hot (6 month to a year)
then upgrade to the next phone will not be as painful
it's like leasing a phone
you pay a $100 give or take every 6 mth to get a better phone
My job allows me to change the phone every year and I think its an ideal duration to play around, fiddle and poke around in a phone, especially when my company pays for it But exceptionally, Galaxy S keeps surprising me every now and then keeps me busy. Its like a woman, once you conquer it you will get over with it and get bored of it BUT not yet!! Unlike iPhone 3GS where I was looking to move on after 4-5 months.

Wait until your plan allows you to upgrade at low cost (usually after 18mnths on t-mobile) and go for a phone that had honeycomb and decent hardware to run it...I'm thinking 6-8 months from now there will be enough info on the models that are out to make an educated purchase..

The current rumor on the sgs2 is 1.2 ghz cpu, 8mp camera with lcd flash, capacitive touch screen,2.3 gb on it, fm radio with rds, hdmi output, 16gb memory,ffc....
if you have have the current vibrant I suggest trying nero v5 with voodoo lag fix.. ka5 with proper flash support...it will completely changer your phone experience...trust me...make a nandroid so you can give it a try and if you don't like it...restore...it feels like a new phone...search for sbg.v2.4 from jdan as well and that will make it even better...

... I might be upgrading today. It's just been a very difficult decision. Evo or evo shift? I watched many comparison videos. now that I'm running AOSP 2.3.3 along w/ Launcher Pro instead of ADW, I feel little need at the moment to move to a Evo. I mean, I still want to, but this thing is so much better than a stock hero, that I think I'll be good for a while.

I love my evo to death! I took a cruise through the hero forums today to see if there's any new and cool to do to my moms hero(still a good phone), I noticed a lot of you guys are on the fence trying to decide between the shift and the big one!
A couple things I want to point out. Shift may have slightly better specs but regardless I have never seen a slow down on anything, life is fast and large.
Also on the keyboard side, the on screen keyboard on the evo is much better than the hero due to a improved touch sensor and just having the buttons be larger. Also after you get it you can remove the stupid arrows(they take up too much space).
Go down to a Sprint store and play around with them till you find something that really makes you say yes this is sweet. For me, I have large hands and the evo is a lot easier for me to use because of the big screen(also I use the kick stand at least twice a day.). And they just got hdmi out working too!
Also in no way am I trying to put down the Shift, just pointing out even though papa evo is older its still in no way a slouch.

I'm glad sprint is sticking with the EVO brand for its flagship android devices. Don't get me wrong, I like choices, but I mean the EVO is almost a year old, and it hasn't been until recently that anything else worth buying has come out (atrix, nexus s, etc.). Now that they're refreshing it, I'm sure the new EVO will be the best thing on the market for a long time.

I'm waiting on the EVO 3D
Here's what I did... may help someone...
I knew my upgrade was going away come this Friday. So, I used my upgrade to get my new Evo (upgraded from old beloved Hero). Got it at Best Buy. Forked over $149 (had a $50 coupon) and paid them the extra $40 for their BuyBack program & BlackTie. Original retail cost of the Evo is listed at $599.
Then, I upgraded my plan to Shared to include my mom (porting her away from TMobile... so, that's an extra $150 service credit promotional from Sprint right there). BestBuy is currently running a new activation promotion and gave her a free LG Optimus S, retailing at $399. I spent an extra $40 for their BuyBack program on this phone also. Then, I gave my mom my old Hero and had Sprint do a free handset swap. So, now I've got this free LG Optimus sitting around in a box, never gonna be used. And I'm canceling the mandatory BlackTie $10/month on the 31st day from purchase.
Still with me here? So... when the new Evo 3D comes out, all I gotta do is take my current Evo back into Best Buy within the next 6months and they give me a $299 gift card for my Evo on BuyBack, and $199 for the never been opened Optimus S.
I failed ethics in high school. And college.

Will they roll back your eligibility to get the phone at the upgrade price? I guess it's better than spending the full retail.
You are getting back 498 for sure but you come up short and then if your.. "Mom's" hero breaks... then you have to get here a new Optimus S on Ebay.
I do hope it works out for you. Sounds like some of the finagling I do.

If everyone bought Nexus devices because of the prompt updates, it would kick other manufacturers into investing in larger software development teams to deliver updates ontime.

If profits at Google fall at some point they may take resources away from the hardware side and concentrate on the software side. Wouldn't like to see that happen but can't be discounted.
If, as seems likely, the Nexus 7 becomes the top-selling Android tablet other manufacturers may decide to withdraw from the sector as they can't compete against a company using consumable sales profits in the Play Store to effectively subsidise their manufacturing costs. Alternatively there could be some form of unfair competition or monopoly complaint. Hope not but wouldn't rule it out.

I was worried when I first came on the Nexus sub-forum, that there was a lot of negativity and issues. And granted there are bad experiences with every first run of any product.... but this is the first phone/media device purchase that I have actually been fairly content with it out of the box. The solution for the OEMS is to keep stock jellybean! To differentiate, include new or different hardware or form factor etc. Then put exclusive apps or features that don't require a change of the system. You could have the play store check for something unique to allow the product download or something. That way there would be no problem keeping it current.

I don't see why HTC couldn't do that with their HTC Sense. It's essentially a launcher.
According to BGR, the First is about to be discontinued: http://bgr.com/2013/05/13/htc-first-discontinued-att-facebook-phone/
I love the First, it's a great size that can be used one-handed, it has stock Android, and the battery life is amazing. But I've held off buying one because I want to make sure it gets CyanogenMod support first. If it does get official CM support, I'll go out of my way to get one, if I still can.
Does anybody know how long it will take HTC to release the source for the First, so CM support might start?
The only competitor to the First on AT&T is probably the One Mini, but rumors are that the Mini will have a significantly smaller battery than the First (1700 instead of 2000mah).
Can't say I didn't see it coming. With the lack of support in this section I doubt it would get official CM support.
I might pick up one of these in the bargain bin if I find a good deal somewhere. I'm looking to open a second line for my daughter, without a contract and this one will fit the bill.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
yeah might pick one up too. 150$ on eBay isn't bad of a deal.
That's disappointing. Now I question whether it would be a good idea to give my mom this phone.
On the other hand, there is a update with this statement from AT&T in the article:
As mentioned previously, we do pricing promotions all the time and have made no decisions on future plans.

I've been trying to figure out how to compile CM as well, do you have any repositories I could look at yet, or is it all still just on your local checkout? I'm not having as much luck, but I've never built CM for anything beyond my Galaxy Nexus before, so I'm not familiar with porting it to new devices.

I'm not having as much luck, but I've never built CM for anything beyond my Galaxy Nexus before, so I'm not familiar with porting it to new devices.

Yeah it's on my github. Same username as here. I would suggest against flashing it though. I barely trust it right now

This is sad to hear. I just got one for my grandmother too. While 4.1 is nice, the polish of 4.2 vastly improves the experience with things like a timer, stop watch, and swype keyboard. Sadly, I don'y see 4.2 coming official to this device.
The phone has descent specs, at least it could be a good option for some CM10.1 love
I might pick this up soon since it's so cheap now. Will this get 4.2 at least? Hope so. Seems like a good purchase. What color did you guys get it in?
very sad to hear indeed. its a terrific phone. the size is great, love the way the back feels, and the battery life is terrific imo. it feels very sturdy too. as soon as my store got a bunch of dummy units in i knew i was going to like it. im carrying around the company's seed unit and im very impressed (black model... gosh i love the look of that red and baby blue though). would love cm10.1 on this machine.
Here's another vote of confidence for this outcast phone. Really love the design. Who cares what software it's running, we'll flash our own anyway. I've been waiting so long for an upgrade from my HTC Aria, which I got specifically because it was small.
HTC has got to do something with all its unused stock, if they're smart they'll simply remove FB Home and push it back out, if they're dumb we should see these babies go for nothing like the HP TouchPad. Either way this phone has a lot of potential to sell like hotcakes.
Broke my HTC One X screen and got an HTC First for $50 brand new. Agree with all the other positive comments about this phone so far. Rooted. unlocked bootloader, freeze Facebook Home and loving every bit of it so far. My only gripe is the weak camera, but to find solid specs on a smaller form factor is so hard these days.
May I ask where you got it from?

Won it at an auction at work.
So when do you all think First cases will start hitting the discount bin.
Well I haven't forgotten about it.
