[Q] Touch Buttons lightening - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
hope this is the right Thread for my post.
I've found out that the touch buttons of my device(Galaxy i9000) are lightening as long as the display is on.
On the device of my girlfriend the buttons are lightening only for 3 seconds then they turn off again even the display is still on.
We both have Froyo 2.2.1 XXJQ3 flashed over Odin. Nothing else is modded.
No rooting, no lagfix.
I know thats it's normal that the buttons are only lightening for 3 seconds, but my girlfriend wants me to set her mobile so it's like mine.
And I have the question why my buttons are lightening as long as the display's on and other phones of the users here not?
Hope u pros can help me again.
Greetz and thx

That's really strange...mine only go in in some apps, when I click them, our when I an typing but generally they are off...will look into it. Are you sure you both running exactly the same firmware?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I'm on the same firmware flached wit Kies (official) and mine is fine. If keep touching the screen, the buttons keep lightening but if after two seconds they are off.
flash the official version it's in kies

Hey guys,
Yeah I'm sure that we both have the same firmware, because I flashed them together. First mine then her's.
Today I flashed both to 2.3.3 and again my buttons stay on and her's not.
In my opinion it looks much better when they stay on as long as the display is on especially when it's dark, but im still curious whats the reason for this.
Still hope u can help me.
Thx and greetz

keep the lights on
Hi there,
I had exactly the same problem with my phone - especially annoying if you are
using phone in darkness.. App "keep the lights on" is a smooth solution..
Give it a try, step out of the dark
cheers

saving battry

I know that it saves battery but why the heck it doesn't do that on my phone?
Never changed something and I have to say that I really like that they stay on, but is there a chance that we can set up if lights stay on or not?

For me on XXJPK, while the app works, after I lock and unlock the buttons light up again so you would have to double tap the widget to turn the lights off every time... :-(

@markdj57
On JP3 and JPO works just fine - after turning the widget (and lights) on, I simply
throw the widget in trash and the buttons and display become one

XXJVK known issue/feature: Button lights are always on when screen is on.
However, this phenomenon should not occur on older firmwares.

Is there a simple fix yet?

Look at this post, worked for me and others.

I found that the app "screen filter" makes the soft key lights turn off after a couple of seconds when it's running, other than that I've never experienced it :/

No idea... I bought my phone at the earlier earlier batch, where it is pack in bubblewrap... LOL!
Anyway, at 2.2.2, still same problem. Doesn't want to get custom rom, as after my exam, i'm going down to LG and get some servicing or shyt out from them...
The problem exist especially when you are charging. It occur also when you put your phone to sleep while running on GPS. Very fedup with it.
It is categorized in Freeze and Reboot Problem
It's the first stage of that problem, if you continue using it, you will suffer the reboot problem

solution to some bsod models. Tested, working!
Many p990 bsod models have faulty soldering of some sort. A solution which have worked for many is to simply plug in your charger. When your phone goes to sleep and doesnt wake up when you hit the power button, just leave it be for 12+ hours. Place your phone on something soft as well, like your bed. This will heat up the device and fix the faulty soldering. If it does not work, try longer period of charging. Good luck. (I will take no responsibility if this does not work as planned)
This was tried on a bsod model which went to unresponsive sleep every 5-30 minutes. After this procedure it was faultless

I've had my LG for quite some time now and I still trying to figure it out. So, if you're patient enough, please, just bare with me for a while as I explain what I've tried so far what what were the results.
A lot of people complains about this phone... unstable, crashes, reboots, BSOD, etc...
The first problem I had, came with the stock ROM... after a while the Wi-Fi just stopped working and it would display "Error..." as a message. The only solution was to reboot. 3 or 4 days after I had bought it, this was already killing me... so I started trying other ROMs but all seemed to suffer from some sort of problem except for one (see phone info below), which I've been running since June and I find it impeccably stable I can basically keep my phone running for as long as I want, as long as the battery doesn't run out (obviously), which brings me to a second point... battery drain!!
The battery drain was the only problem I didn't manage to find a solution for... and after a certain while, even though my phone was stable, having to charge my phone every single day was becoming very annoying.
Since I live in a different country than my GSM operator, it doesn't come as a news flash that network look-up has a big impact on the battery life, specially because I live close enough to the border to be able to keep the signal but in some parts of my house the signal is lost forcing the phone to search for a new network, which sometimes it finds (roaming) and sometimes it comes back to the original network and so on... However, what I find, unarguably, to have the biggest impact on the battery is having the Wi-fi enabled when there's no available network, it's just huge, it can suck up the battery in a few hours...
So, I decided to try some of those power management apps such as Locale, Green Power and some other, in order to minimize these problems, but curiously, they all caused the same problem... BSOD within a matter of minutes. I installed the app, configured it, waited for the phone to go into sleep and puff... it was gone. The only way out of it was removing the battery. I uninstalled the app, and the phone was stable again... this happened with every single app of the kind, that I have tried.
At the moment my phone is as stable as it gets but if I don't pay it enough attention, the battery dies in a blink of an eye.

Do you guys have the lockscreen wake lag?

Hey guys just wondering if you guys have this problem:
When you wake your phone, your phone first shows the last used screen then it shows the lock screen. Meaning the phone will show "what you see before you press sleep button" then it shows the lockscreen.
I have this problem since stock andriod and now on MCR as well or is this even normal?
Normal, same here.
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
Wouldnt call it normal , but i have it too yes..
Only sometimes though, not always
Normal in LG bugland
Hahahahaha under LG's book i guess its normal.
Alright thanks guys. Sometimes i have it, sometimes i don't.
Damn whats wrong with LG. Hopefully we get a different LG after 2.3.. :S

Have done the same...
Mine doesn't pick up my first swipe in pattern lock, either. Really frustrating. The lock screen form CM7 is impeccable and lightning-fast as far as response goes, but there my WiFi intermittently stops working after a few hours. Sigh..... Life is all about compromises.

blank screen but phone ON!!!!

Has anyone had this issue?
I have tried a few different ROM's and have had this problem on all, the phone will work but sometimes when the phone is locked and asleep you cannot get the screen back.
If you ring the phone it will ring but you can't wake the phone up (the screen is off).
If I then pull the battery and reboot all is well until the next time, which is random.
I will remove all my programs to see if there is one of them causing the issue, I don't believe it is the rom as it has happened on a few of them.
Have you wiped your phone when flashing the different roms? I've had it sometimes, i think it could be a ram management issue...

Yeh, I always do a factory/wipe, dalvik cache wipe.
I think it might have been TW4.5, I did some research and installed TW4 Manager I then updated TW4.5 to the latest Version. So far it hasn't happened yet but i'll give it a couple more days.
Thanks.
Yh ive been reading and TW4 generally accelerates the issue (because its a ram hog? not sure i dont use it) Im currently using Golauncher with system tweaks, but was told that nemus launcher and system tweaks was a better combination... Seems to be working, ive had less force closes or issues of that type

I don't think so...
The proximity sensor is only used when your in a call. It should not have any effect when he tries to wake it from his pocket after a while...
Well i am on 2.3.5 and using golauncher and never had any problems. Still my best guess is the damn sensor. On samsung apps there is an app called sensors i think and that app tells u what is working inside the phone.

Sounds like a great app but seeing as the screen doesn't turn on that app might as well be useless in this case
No screen turns on, its just when it turns off it wont come back on...
I have the same issue with my SGS. Running stock version of JVT.
Wake up in the morning to phone alarm but screen is black. Pushing home button or any other button does nothing. Had this happen a few times now and only solution is to pull the battery
In order to help you we need to know what you are running currently and what you have tried to resolve the issue so far, can please make as detailed account as possible
It's seems that everybody have this same issue. I have exactly this same - phone is working - buttons are lit, but the screen is blank. I'm on 2.3.5 stock firmware.
Trying to solve this I already did wipe and even formatted the internal storage.
What's more interesting is that this same happens to my wife's Galaxy Mini (S5570) !!.
I can remember though that when my phone was on v2.2 about a year ago it was working ok.
small tip:
What you can do instead of pulling the battery out is to press the power button for about 10 seconds ( phone will turn off) release and the press it again for few seconds to start again.
You don`t need to press power again, just keep it pressed until you see the samsung bootlogo.
Mine has started to blackout too, maybe it`s related to some installed software. It worked ok still few months ago. My galaxy mini is working ok tho, has only few market apps installed.

The bug is called SOD (Sleep of Death). Apparently a Gingerbread only bug (I think deep sleep was introduced in Gingerbread).
Your phone is going into deep sleep, and can't be woken agian.
I don't know if there is a fix for it, but you could try search for SOD on these forum pages.

i think its black magic made by apple and will kill our cats
As Herman76 said, this is the SOD, I used to get them quite frequently. I created a thread with a possible workaround. So far haven't got any new SODs.

[Q] Capacitive Buttons will not shut off-MIUI

Running MIUI 1.10.7
The Capacitive buttons stay lit constantly, even when the phone is locked and the screen is off the buttons remain lit.
Might it have something to do with the bootloader I'm running? I had tried to load the i897 GB bootloader per the suggestion of someone else for another problem I was having. Anyway I can check which bootloader I'm running? And which bootloader is suggested? Links appreciated.
I should add, this was a new install. Because of other issues I was having, I flashed back to stock, flashed bootloader, then flashed MIUI. The button lights not shutting off has been apparent ever since first boot.
Thanks
I've never used MIUI so I can't say for sure, but this sounds like Backlight Notification (BLN). BLN uses the capacitive buttons like a notification LED since the Captivate doesn't have one.
If you clear all of your notifications and the lights go out when the screen turns off, that's what is going on. They'll come back on when you have a notification waiting.
hmmm... I think your right. They are off now and I don't have any notifications. Maybe it was recently implemented for the captivate, I don't recall seeing this the last few months. Thanks for the reply.

That is a great feature, but how on earth do I turn it off?! The BLN app doesn't not do it (it gives me something like "BLN mod not installed")... nothing seems to work.

wont keep keys lit after update

Hi people, I got my phone today, and as you do, you set it up how you like it, I set it to keep the home, back and settings keys to light all the time, and it did. Not exactly, no. That setting gives you the option of '1.5 seconds' or 'Always off' and only applies to how the lights work during Power-Save mode, not normally.
Nice try to make us look stupid though :banghead:

I'm not sure if you are intentionally trolling or just stupid.
It is quite clearly stated that setting to 'Always On' makes no difference at all.
Do you have v10f on your phone? Do you even have this type of phone?
Calling all owners. Is there anyone out there?
OK, so I have raised this with LG Tech Support and they are telling me that it is an "Isolated Issue". Here is the copy of my emails with them;-
ME: I purchased this phone yesterday in the UK. I immediately got an OTA update to v10f. With this version there appears to be a bug. The "Front key light" setting doesn't change anything. I want to set it to "Always On" so that the lights are on whenever the screen is, but the button lights still go out after about 2 seconds.
This appears to be a software problem as other people on the forums have reported the same issue.

THEM: Based on the information you have provided me with, and after reading through your query, I would recommend that this is a standard setting on the handset unfortunatly unless in use the LED lights will power down, if you touch the LED lights they should illuminate again but unfortunatly there isnt a setting that you can change. Unfortunatly we are unable to do anything here at LG currently but we will raise this as a issue and you will have to wait for another update or bug fix if this is a software issue.

ME: This is definitely NOT a standard setting. Under software v10d this worked perfectly - as long as the screen was on, the buttons were lit up. The setting has the option of "Always On" and the fact that it doesn't work means that something is broken in the code. I have looked on XDA-Developers.com and found that I am far from the only person with this problem. There is also a partial solution which may point to the problem;-
"EDIT: OMG, changing the content of this file to 1 did fix it instantly! I'm not sure, if this app caused this behavior to happen but if anyone has the same issue, the exact location of the file is:
/sys/devices/platform/button-backlight/leds/button-backlight/br_maintain_on
EDIT 2: the file will be set to Ɔ' on each reboot, even with read-only permissions and when this app is not installed. It looks like this could be a firmware bug?
Maybe this will help - but at the moment I am seriously considering returning my phone and getting something by a different manufacturer as this is more than just annoying. Having those buttons flick off so quickly is a real nightmare when you are actually using the phone.

THEM: Based on the information you have provided me with, and after reading through your query, I would recommend that this appears to be a islolated issue, as said before i will raise a Voice Of Customer which means that i will be raising this issue to head office and they will read this and look into the case. Unfortunalty i must inform you that your handset is covered by LG for 12 months under warrenty but you will fully void this by changing the codeing or altering the data inside the handset in anyway, this will also mean that the LG engineers will not repair this as it will be deemed as rooted.

Can anyone out there confirm that they are running v10f and that the screen buttons work correctly for them. It would be interesting to tie this down and see if it is a problem with all v10f versions, if it is location specific, or if it maybe only effects certain batches of the phones.
---------- EDIT -----------
Thanks to this post by k1337Ultra, it appears that this can be fixed by disabling and then re-enabling the Automatic Brightness. Hope this helps others - very annoying though to find the solution buried in a totally irrelevant thread

And it works after a reboot as well. Yippee!!!!!

2) actually read the OP and my post, realised that we were talking about a problem only in the latest version, and realised that posting would be fairly pointless.
