[Q] Dead USB Port? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My captivate appears to have a dead USB port. No connection, no charging. No warranty either.
I have disassembled and cleaned it as best I could.
Tried multiple USB cables, both to PCs and chargers.
Did a factory reset.
Otherwise phone is 100% functional.
Any other ideas?
Can anyone recommend a reputable repair service?
Should I just buy one with a busted screen and frankenstien one between the two?

Take it back, its under warranty.

How is it under warranty. If he posted that its not.

I guess it came out like August? Then it would be less than a year. Right on

Well, it may be by time, but I bought it off e-bay. Will ATT still honor the warranty? Hasn't been wet.

If not. Samsung will.

Here is the whole story....
My phone is on a LARGE corporate account. We get a Windows Mobile phone with it. I wanted something else, so I bought the Samsung off E-bay last fall and put my SIM card in it.
It is an ATT branded phone. What are the chances they would warranty it if I just walked in and told them that my USB port was dead?

Just called att, and they are replacing it. Just need to get the billing address for my account. I guess I just assumed they would not warranty it. Kudos to them.

Just flash to stock. Send it in. We can help with any software problems, but everybody's phone is covered for hardware.

Oh, good point. It's rooted and Froyo....

Ok, so a quick look around didn't reveal a way to go back to stock without USB. Any ideas or pointers?

Ooh good point. I've seen people ask about a flashable stock but don't recall seeing one. Maybe change the title of this thread and update op with question. I can see it being ok to send in with custom rom and not being ok. If all else fails, flash a version of cog and delete super user and all other apps that he includes that need root. Then copy over a stock boot and shutdown animation.

I think I am just going to do a master reset and send it back. We have thousands of ATT phones on our account and I don't think they will care.

Replacement phone will be here Wed.
HUGE thanks to everyone who encouraged me and pointed out the foolishness in not trying to warranty it. If not for that, I would have just dealt with it.

I bought nexus s from craigslist and got ripped off... Someone sold me a phone without back battery cover. It came with a case and seller was in a hurry so I bought it by inspecting the software.

Call Samsung support. They'll ask for imei and just tell then you broke your battery cover. Then say you heard they sold replacements. They'll check and then they'll sell it to you for $16. Took a little more than a week for me to get one.

Thanks man! you saved my life. Just called samsung support and had them send me the back cover for $16.23 with free 5-7 days shipping.
I also asked for the warranty on the product and they said that it was till March 2012. I also noticed that the screen has permanent impression of the virtual keyboard on it. First i thought that restoring to factoring settings will fix it but no... I still have the virtual keyboard impressions on the screen. I think it is the problem with the digitizer. They said that they will replace it for free. Now I am gonna have a cool phone once it comes back from Samsung.
Thanks a ton for showing me the way.
Anyhow, one more question, My phone is rooted and is running a custom rom on it, is it still under warranty? I am sure there should be a way to unlock the bootloader and return back to stock ROM, can you show me a thread please... I am gonna search also but I want to make sure I am doing it right before i do it... so that they don't deny me the warranty...
Thanks,
Edit/update: searched and found everything. Returned back to stock. It's so simple with nexus s! Thanks everyone who helped me

Go to samsungs nexus s website, the number will be listed where it says support. You just talk to a rep who will handle everything.

Just google samsung support phone number. It will help if you register your phone on their website before calling because that will save you some time.

FYI: Verizon is out of replacement REVOLUTIONS

So the revolution is my wife's phone and i apologize if this was posted because i dont follow these forums.
She was having a problem with the charging port not working. The cable had to be perfectly placed in the port for the phone to charge. Called verizon and they said they are out of replacement revolutions. Offered me a Droid charge, I asked for something else, they offered me a Thunderbolt, asked again for something else and the rep said no. I very politely said I wasn't fond of either phone and asked again if there was anything else. Ended up getting the Rezound.
Just an FYI.
If you go that route don't tell them that you have had a insurance replacement I tried but I had a insurance replacement it is still being sent to me free of charge cause it is under warranty but evidently asurion has a stock pile of these I'm going to try a few times in a row to see if they will budge but with all the minor issues with this phone it's easy to get a warranty replacement. Only thing that sucks is going back to stock to send it back.

You should try porting some of those Galaxy Nexus themes for the Revo
This is the third separate thread saying you can get a better phone for the REVO.
makes me want to try it, since without GingerVolt my phone restarts all the time.

My phone's fine just kinda bored with it. GingerVolt is great and all but there's not enough developers. I'd love to learn but I don't know where to start.

I'm still having issues with my revo I wonder if I should try getting another model from them now. I've kinda just given up lately on this whole phone and it's making me depressed -_-. I can't do nothing with it without it freezing, rebooting, getting way to hot to touch, etc.
I just hate that the bluetooth never worked rooted or not. I try to be legal when driving and the bluetooth always failed.

I'm not sure what your Bluetooth issue is, but I don't think it's the phone. I've used mine with two different stereos for making calls as well as streaming audio with no issues at all.

[Q] N7000 owner in the US needs non-warranty fix for USB port -- where do I go?

The Samsung website is remarkably difficult to decipher when it comes to this. I am fine with mailing my phone somewhere and waiting for a repair, and fine with being billed for the repair -- the USB port broke because I dropped it one too many times with the cable connected -- but I can't figure out who is supposed to take my money and fix the thing! Help?
there are these parts on ebay and other sites. and lots of tutorials on how to change it.

Wow. This never even occurred to me; I never imagined it would be user-replaceable. I guess this must be a fairly common problem.
eBay seems to have them only arrive in a month, Amazon doesn't seem to have them at all. Is there anyone who can deliver this week that you know of? I really don't know where to look for this kind of thing.
I'm sorry I am in a different continent and here in know local phone repair shops who can get it soon for me. Try them in ur area

Finally after 3 Amoled screen phones prior to this one, I have my first ever case of "burn in." shows up kinda purple/pink on white backgrounds. Off to Samsung customer service chat I go.

I've had a repair center tell me they will swap out a refurb for it.
Samsung just gave me a number to call during the week. Will stop by a repair center tomorrow.
Would they be bothered with it being rooted? I had a few screens on my evo replaced under warranty and was on MIUI both times and they said nothing.

I agree. Put it completely back to stock so your chances of them saying they refuse to replace it because you rooted and put a custom ROM on it are virtually zero. Don't give them any excuse to say no because you're too lazy to put it back to 100% stock. Make sure you do a factory full reset after PC Odin back to stock and remove your SD card before bringing it in. Better to be safe than sorry.

QHSUSB_DLOAD is Qualcomm High Speed USB Download mode. It is how HTC puts software onto the phone. A few phones have came back from in with no explanation as to why, but most are hard bricked. There is no know fix other than sending it to HTC. They will replace the phones main board and reflash it. It is not a warranty repair, so you'll have to pay for it.

btw if i send it to HTC for repair how many it will cost? hmm, i just thinking, about giving another explanation to htc when i send it to him, if i say "it has bricked after a few minutes since i update from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2" does htc will trust that? if htc doesnt trust that, how htc know if my phone already unlocked and tampered? because the phone doesnt want to boot at all ._.

There is a reason every developer includes a disclaimer with their software. You chose to unlock the bootloader, you chose to run modified software, and now it falls on you to accept responsibility for a bricked device. HTC may fall for that line, but I doubt it. The 4.2.2 updates been out for a while now and there have been no reports of it bricking phones, where as several devices running custom roms have had this happen. More than likely HTC will see through the bull**** story. But who am I to be your moral compass? Go ahead and give it a try. Let us know how it goes.

I've heard different reports of the cost, but its always over $200 US.
I wouldn't recommend JTAG on the One. The body is almost impossible to get apart without damaging it.

$200 to bring it back from a hard brick is not surprising, especially since HTC seems to be the only ones capable of this....

Well your One is basically a fancy paperweight the way it is, and if they'll do it under warranty great. Two months is a long time, but at least its not $200.
