wait..let me get this straight, so you want to have a phone that doesn't have phone calling capabilities?
Put a lockscreen on the phone to stop him/her from accessing the dialer. Or keep it out of reach when it's not on you.
Then, most importantly, explain why dialing 911 when not an emergency is very wrong. Then take desert away for say.. a week and a half to get the point across.. and so on.

she like to play the games and use the wifi to look at you tube and this is an extra phone it does not have service. yes i know she is spoiled rotten but you have to train them young so one day she will be smarter than i am.

Ah, I understand now I thought it was in service which is why I was confused about not allowing any calls out/in.
Well I have a few ideas:
Download titanium backup and "freeze' the dialer application - should allow the phone(device) to run properly while disabling calls.
You could try uninstalling again and wipe cache/davlik in the recovery menu after - this might help eliminate the FC's

freezing the dialer worked like a champ thanks

You bring up an excellent point. With the new dual core coming out, most of us will make the switch. I wonder if there is a ROM out there that transforms our phone into just a multimedia device?

thats what im going for. when i get some time im gonna take a crack at rewriting the rom for just multimedia.

Sounds like a good idea. Personally, I don't have so much media that I can't bring it from phone to phone, around 2 gigs of music, 30 or so videos, and about 150 pictures, so having a dedicated device just for my media is a waste of pocket space for me. With that said, once I get my 3d or whatever, I'd imagine that my Hero will be converted into a game player for my kids. That is, if I can't sell it to someone.

Has this been done?!?! lol this would be the most perfect idea uninstall just about everything aside from titatium and or root explorer to get just multimedia apps on the phone, do away with contacts radio anything that makes the phone run at top speeds...
hmmm

Lol You bet it would!!

You can just put it in airplane mode and turn on wifi, right? Or does that somehow leave you with 911 access?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA Premium App

No, airplane mode completely disables the phone radio.

it does disable it but i guess i have taught her well cause she managed to turn airplane mode off

Titanium backup, force uninstall. Not sure why that would cause FC problems. Or try freezing it with TI backup. You could also get launcher pro, and hide the Icon and change the stock dock from launcher pro.

Need help with some issues

Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if I want to just return my captivate and go back to my iphone, or if there's a way to deal with this thing.
My issues are basically:
Browser perfomance is ****, to say the least. Panning and zooming on most sites is painfully bad - XDA worst than pretty much any other site out there. When I try to type in the browser, I'll hit 10 keys, and 3 will show up...a few seconds later another 2 will be entered...etc. Zooming is bad, I don't know why. Panning just looks jerky/non-fluid.
Bluetooth: I have an Acura with the tech package, so having bluetooth work is kinda a requirement. However, every time I try to do anything bluetooth related, the phone slows to a crawl. If I hit the home softkey, it takes 1-2 minutes for the phone to go home. I eventually have to pull the battery to reset.
Data: Sometimes, it just drops totally. I'm sitting still with 4-5 bars, and suddely the marketplace won't load...or XDA won't load...try a second or third time and suddenly it loads fine. Unsure if this is just the marketplace (and XDA forums) being unreliable, or if the phone's data connection is just THAT bad.
GPS: I did the fixes in the "hidden" settings (supl settings and whatnot) and I now get fixes much faster, but they're always off. I seem to always be on AGPS, and not ever getting sattelite fixes...that, or the settelite fixes are just really as bad as AGPS is.
Perf in general: not so hot. Some things work well, some things will crawl at times.
Facebook: no push notifications? What?
I'm on the latest SRE, and I can flash back to the stock kernel if that'll help...
But in general, my opinion after slightly over a week is that this just feels like when I still played with Linux a few years ago - a toy. Nothing for general consumption, nothing for someone who just wants it to work - and feel free to tell me I'm wrong, I'm still not totally decided and have another 3 weeks to return this...but I'm hard pressed to find a reason to keep using this instead of going back to my iphone. A wireless AP is amazing, but that's the only thing I keep coming back to...and who knows, a jailbroken iPhone might be capable of that?
Thanks for all the thelp!
RA
Are you using JF6 (the stock baseband that came with the phone)? because that one is miserably slow.
switch to JH3 and then flash SRE... it'll feel like an entirely different phone.
I felt the same way until I flashed several firmwares and applied different mods/lag fixes. You have to find what's right for you. It seems that Samsung may have skimped on the software side but they didn't hold back with hardware. With the new voodoo lag fix that's coming out soon, froyo, an official GPS fix, and promising android development for the Captivate, I'd say we're starting to realizing the true potential of this phone. I've never used bluetooth nor do I have any problems with data. You may have a bad phone... Perhaps you should exchange it for another and see if that remedies some problems? The ball is in your court but I could not bare to go back to the iPhone (I've been using it since it came out).
Wrong section of the captivate forum to be asking questions, theres a proper section for that..., about your issues most are plassebo, try flashing a i9000 rom and give it another try.

I'll give that a try then - I did just have to call ATT though to have them put me back onto the iPhone plan, since I'm doing a trip tomorrow and will want a working phone...I'll try flashing a few more things...but tbh, I keep reading about Froyo and GPS fixes...I saw posts about a GPS fix going out a month ago...when will it actually happen?

I totally agree with the earlier posts about trying other setups before giving up on it. I LOVE my setup. UCJH3 firmware, SREv1.2.1a, Tayutama's Lagfix4. All can be found on threads here.Do it step by step and you will see a HUGE difference. The only thing that will still suck, I think, is the GPS. I find mine very erratic. But everything else is great and almost no lag.
Most of your issues are non-existent on the stock ROM - so either you borked something while customizing or your phone has a hardware issue.
The browser should work without issue. GPS is broken, and none of the fixes do much so that we have to wait on Samsung.
The phone is in its infancy. Remember ios 2 on the 3g? Well apple learned a lot and there software is always polished. You may want to wait for the next android support phones. Apple did a good job this time around but the touch screen interface needs too many steps and the home screens are too cluttered I want to put icon any where putting them in groupings helps my eyes and brain navigate. I'll trade the gps and a few bugs for that any day. Phones are supposed to be intuitive, the iphone may be easy but I'll argue all day that is not intuitive. Android may be less easy but I can make it intuitive, it takes a little time and a few market apps though. That's why I chose this phone, but I don't knock iphone users, just the fanboys.
If you like to tinker ands it sounds like you do you may just get addicted to this thing.
The data problems may be do to the stock software, do a reflash of jh3, with the original I couldn't switch from wifi to edge or the other way around without killing the app and restarting it. I haven't noticed that problem lately with jh2

Facebook is badly broken on all Android phones I have ever used. There's a Link to an app called bloo here on XDA I think it's in Hero CDMA apps section. It has notifications and chat.
I found Bloo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679556
Yeah Facebook for android absolutely blows. Not just push notifications but the whole app. One of the worst apps I have on my phone. Like today, i had 2 notifications of ppl writing on my wall. When i go to notifications and click on the post to read the end of it, it opens in the browser??? Honestly??? Makes me back out, go to my own profile and then go to the wall. That's crap. Facebook for iPhone is better than the Facebook website, yet i would almost rather delete my Facebook account than use it on android.

Vibrates after phone is answered?

My 2.1 powered Hero is having a few speed problems, and one of them is that when my phone is ringing, the vibrator continues shortly after I've picked up. Quite annoying for both me and the caller. One time it didn't stop, not even after I hung up again, I had to shut down then phone completely!
So does anyone have suggestions how to fix this? I guess its a lag problem because the phone feels slow other times aswell, for example now when typing.
The problem is my phone's not even filled up with Apps etc, and I use an appkiller. Also the problem is there almost right after I reboot the phone.
I use the original HTC Rom running android 2.1. Have replaced sense with launcherpro though regarding the homecreens and appdrawer.

It sounds like a typical Sense UI issue...very laggy. Easiest solution is to root your phone, and install another ROM. CM6 is great, and it will get you up to FroYo (2.2). The lag will be gone, and your phone will work much better.
I was kind of hoping that wasn't necessary, but maybe I'll give it a try. Any link to the easiest way to install a custom rom? Don't know how to although I've read a lot of confusing guides a while ago.

BTW is there a way to remove/disable sense on my hero and go so stock android with launcher Pro, WITHOUT rooting and flashing a custom rom? So its easy to go back to sense if I think stock android is too ugly?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
You dont NEED any kind of killer. Get rid of your junk apps, just delete them all. Disable all the vibrate options for everything(may not be necessary) and reboot. Run some tests. Is there a process popping that you think causes it? Delete its source.

Question About Using Captivate As MP3 Player.

Was wondering if anyone knew of a ROM that was strictly made to turn your Captivate into a mp3 player. I am getting a new phone and want to turn my captivate into a pure music player........no extra phone components as they aren't needed. Thanks appreciate it

I don't think you'll find a ROM that is made for that.. Although, you can get some really light ROM and install the music player you want on it. You battery won't drain and you'll be able to listen to music as much as you want (or almost ).
Im not too familiar with android where phone components/programs go........but i do know that there are quite a few that run in the background.........I wonder if theres a way to keep them disabled or remove them and keep android working.......im sure that would help the battery and improve speed

Tbh, speed should never be a problem.
As for battery, I had amazing battery life running FF 3.0 + speedmod k13e listening to music all day long.
Of course, you can kill some running services: Email, SnS, Google Services, Maps and such. But there are some others that you can't kill.
Either way, your phone should be just a good if not better than a mp3 player if you keep it light/stable. Beside, with your phone, you can have voodoo sound imp = amazing sound quality
If you either turn data mode off or flight mode off and that will boost your battery a lot
Sorry said on instead of off
You can also keep it in airplane mode and make sure wifi and bluetooth are off. Not using the radios will help with battery life as well.
edit: just a little too slow typing my reply!

wells system apps are in /system/app
3rd party apps are in /data/app
you can use titanium backup to freeze apps for testing purposes and then later uninstall them.
make sure you have voodoo sound installed! makes music listening way better.

Yeah, no bugs whatsoever and battery life is nothing but spectacular.
And be sure to get the Voodoo Control app of the market.
check out precision 2.5 It is only 78 mb and has absolutely the best battery life of any rom I've used. With airplane mode turned on I would say you could several days use of it. it is fast even without a lagfix which uses battery life on other roms. The developer (Ryude) wanted to make a stripped down rom for better battery life and did a great job.
Why not simply leave the similar card out. No similar card, No service. You'll still be able to use wifi.

Even with the sim out the phone will maintain a cell connection thus consuming battery if airplane mode is not turned on.
Put the phone in airplane mode, and use Titanium back up to remove any apps or services you don't want.
I don't really understand why you'd want to strip it down to the point of *just* being an mp3 player - there are better devices out there. But it would make a pretty neat alternative to an iPod touch if you yanked out the SIM card and put the phone airplane mode. You'll get some really respectable battery life that way. The hardware/OS itself doesn't really use that much power outside of the radio and the screen being on. Most of the time the phone spends clocked down to 100 mHz or something and just sips power.
Great!
I would definitely use a launcher to hide all the unnecessary bloatware apps, install only minimal things and then use a premium music player that has all the features you need and looks nice to boot. The one I prefer for all that is PowerAmp, it really looks clean and has a ton of features for you. although you have to pay for it in market
my cappy have been my main music player for a year now!!!

[Q] Hello guys I'm new here.

Hello guys, it is great to finally find some place like this online!!!
I have a LG Revolution by Veriwon Wireless, and as you can see in my nickname, I really hate LG Revolution because I cannot delete any of stupid bloatwares that have been installed on my phone nor call or go to different menus within two seconds.
The phone is getting slower and slower and I'm almost about to have a mental breakage... I once thought about throwing this #$#$ out and get a free, txt and camera (no video) only LG Glare or something....
Guys do not direct me to weird codes and all that but can any of you here help me through the process of rooting the phone and putting? flashing? the ROM please? T^T
I once tried to do one-touch rooting or whatever but my phone kept on connecting back and forth while after I ran the one-touch rooting program.. and nothing worked. My phone is just too slow to do anything and it takes 5 seconds to actually go to a call function.
I paid freakin 300 for this and I wanna get some use of it.....
How do I root this and put on gingervolt or whatever???? T^T
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SAVE THIS POOR KID!! T^T
And just FYI.. I have a Windows 7 64bit Desktop which I tried to root my phone with but ended up failing.

Sounds like this is your first smart phone. To try and help speed out and stuff get Advanced Task Killer this will help kill the apps once you're done using them. Use the link the guy above me provided to root it once you're done You'll be able to get into CWM once you're in there make a Backup before you do anything. Once you're there then you can install a ROM such as GingerVolt which the link for this is here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326542 For the first couple of days after you've flashed GingerVolt your battery life won't be as good as it is now until the Phone is use to the new settings which you should notice more battery life once this is done sometimes worse.
Yeah, root it (follow directions EXACTLY !!!), and then Gingervolt it. NO Bloatware & once you have done both, you will have the confidence to use the Stock app installer to replace anything from the stock ROM that you want to.
Ed
I did mine for the first time last week and if you follow the directions its a snap. You will be amazed at how the phone will perform one you install gingervolt rom.
Just be patient and follow every step. Don't be like me and forget to put the phone into USB De-Bugging and Internet Connection.
Welcome. This is a great forums, and most people are here to help. Good luck with rooting, as mentioned, if you follow directions to the letter it is very hard to break anything...and if you do, these guys are awesome at getting your phone back and running in no time at all....

Follow this, except don't use a task killer. It will actually just kill performance because your phone will just restart everything the task killer closes, which drains the battery and lowers performance. Task killers are evil and for people who don't understand how android drops apps into inactive mode when they're not displayed on screen and doesn't use much of the phone resources (unless of course the program has been killed and the phone has to actively restart it).

It all depends on the permissions that are set for the app. Like I play Cut the Rope on my phone once I'm done I'll kill it with my task killer but it won't restart itself since the permissions aren't set to re-run the app once it's killed.
If worried about apps restarting get Gemini and change the startup permission. Have to be rooted though.

I'm not worried about them restarting, because 90% of the apps that a task killer would kill are apps that I use on a regular basis anyway, so they would be restarted by me launching the app. My point was that if a program isn't on the screen, it's dumped into the memory and remains idle until you go to use it. It uses very little phone resources, so killing the apps doesn't improve your phone much. Using gemini prevents apps from starting automatically, but they start and continue to run when you open them. But since it wasn't idle in the background, certain apps take forever to start, and that's even more annoying. Bottom line, root your phone, add GV2.0, don't use task killers or gemini. They're just a hassle, drain your battery, and provide no improvement to your phone.
I still use GV and my phone starts to get laggy. I use Gemini to kill apps and clear my cache alot.

I posit that doing that is why your phone gets laggy. I'm on gv2.0 with zram enabled and using rom toolbox pro to set min/Max to 245/1501 with smartass governor, and i have had 0 lag since flashing 2.0. I flashed it within a few hours of MT posting it too

My phone isn't laggy at all and I use task killers to kill apps frequently on a daily basis. I'm on GV2.0 1501/546 or something not sure of the exact number for min. But my phone runs perfectly fine when I kill apps with a task manager.
Anybody recommend a certain app to set Cpu with that's free?
So after you are rooted, and swap out your ROM with something decent, then lastly I suggest a name change...

Is it possible to turn off the warning for battery 30 %?

IF there is something I really don't need then it is to know that there's about 1/3 of the power left in the battery! I would like to stop that warning, but I can't find anywhere to do that. Is it possible, or is it a quirk I'll have to live with on this phone? They all have some quirks, just in different areas.

Is it possible, or is it a quirk I'll have to live with on this phone? They all have some quirks, just in different areas.

And the warning is so loud.. I have reported this to Sony so I hope they will change it

Yeah, hope is always eternal, but I'm afraid that's not likely, since the accelerometer problem (which means that the screen won't follow the phone's direction, but stay in portrait mode) hasn't yet been fixed several months after the first reports. So the best would be if it was possible to fix through an app with a rooted phone or something like that.

That one is fixed... Have you not yet received the nougat update?

I am on Nougat from about a week ago (Telenor for Norway), and it is most definitively not fixed, at least not in this phone. The phone doesn't rotate at all except for when I use an app, Screen rotate.

I am on beta and it worked from day one here.
I guess you should try a software reset.

How about three resets in two days? I bought the phone a week ago, after years of Samsung. Took me days to figure out how to root, and in the meantime it had upgraded itself to N because I didn't see what I clicked on (eye operation makes it a bit difficult these days). So I got it downgraded to MM, reset it, backed up the TA files, upgraded to N again, reset it and activated USB debugging for Flashtool, unlocked the bootloader, reset it again and finally set it up the day before yesterday. So I seriously doubt that another rest would change much.
Edit: Oh, and it may be different from phone to phone. According to your sig you do not have the same phone as me.

I have not updated my signature...I have the xp.
It is quite funny as all I know of have gotten their screen rotation fixed with the software update. I guess you are unlucky... Which nougat firmware have you installed?

I see. So it's the map not fitting the terrain.
Well, maybe I should try yet another reset. I have Titanium, so it's quite easy to get back to where I am now if it doesn't help. I have F8131_Telenor Mobil NO_1303-3350_39.2.A.0.361_R7C
So I did. Reset, and didn't do anything but log into my Google account. When I got through the setup process there was no rotation at all. Then I started thinking. Could it have anything to do with the rooting? I use TWRP and the ANdroPlus kernel, and I checked the AndroPlus website. Turned out that they had a new kernel out just yesterday, and the note got me thinking:
v19
Add support for 39.2.A.0.361

That was the number on the firmware I'm using. So I flashed that, and bingo! Now I'm rotating! Well, at least my screen is, I don't even dare to think about rotating after yesterday's celebration. Keywords: Crayfish and shrimps, duck breast and chocolate mousse, followed by as many beers as my 50 year old body can take. And that's quite a lot! So today is not my most productive day this year... But thanks for getting me on the right track, if you knew it or not!
Edit: There's a new TWRP recovery as well for the phone, 3.0.3.0, dated a couple of days ago.

Hilarious ??? good that it worked out for you.
I am glad for the info as it then was kernel related.
Sounds like you had a great time last night. I hope you get a great year to follow ?
Enjoy your rotating Xperia ?

I have so say that I hope for a great year too, but it may be an intersting one!
Oh, and found out that it wasn't the kernel after all. It was regular rooting with SuperSU that broke the rotation, so now I'm trying the systemless root from phh. I'll let you now if that works, just to complete this part of the thread (which is really so off the original topic that it should have been split to another thread!).

Thanks man.. I have rooted a lot in the past but I don't want to unlock my bootloader anymore... Back in the days when phones were slower it made sense to root and mess with the config and custom roms.. But today... Not much, what is the reason to why you are rooting?
Sent from my F8131 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I root for two main reasons:
1. You can't do a really good backup in any other way than with Titanium backup, and I like to start semi-fresh every now and then when there's been too much bull tested and tried on the phone.
2, and this is the real kicker: For some idiotic reason a non-rooted Android phone can't do AirPlay in any way. I have a whole-house system that incorporates streaming over WiFi from my phone, and if I don't root, I can't use any of the streaming apps that support AirPlay (my favourite is AirAudio) to stream audio from whatever app I want to, since it can stream the actual phone audio. DLNA is totally useless because I have to use particular apps to stream with that, and they are not the apps I actually use. So basically Google has with a rather dumb choice forced me to root.

The Xperia backup does the trick for me... It saves data so I have a complete backup.
The second makes good sense, I don't use apple so I don't know the problem but hope it will work out in the future mate ?
Sent from my F8131 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Doubful. It's a proprietary Apple system so they won't support it in Android, and from what I've heard that's why they make it as difficult as possible to support it, so root is necessary. Anyway, I'm good with that, as long as I get root. It took me some days, but Sony's a new thing to me. Still love that ability to work with a wet screen. Samsung really has a problem there.
I only get the warning at 15%, this is where I set the auto stamina to notifiy me when stamina kicks in.
How weird. I have turned off that bull totally, don't need it. I'm never that far from a charger, in my boat, car, house or motorcycle. So no stamina mode at all, still it wines at 30 %.

try setting auto stamina at 15%, it's the lowest you can set, and see if the 30% will stop.
Good point, I'll try. I seldom let the battery go so low, while 30 is not that uncommon. I'll try and see what happens later today, thanks!
