Hi everyone!
Does the Optimus 2X support native 3G video calling?
I mean, like Samsung Galaxy S does?
I am not refering to IP videocall, such as fring, oovoo, clearsea and such.
All i want is plain old native 3G video calling to be enabled in the dialer, so that i can videochat using my free air time (no waste of data plan megabytes) with people who do not even have a smartphone, but their phone does support 3G video calls.
Please let me know if it does, because it is a major thing for me to know, before i decide whether to buy.
Thank you very much in advance!
As far as I have been able to ascertain the LG 2x does in fact support proper video calling via the 3g network.
Can some one(those who are using it and did video call over native 3g) confirm it...

I'am in Indonesia and I can confirm that native video call via 3g is working. I can video call my family several time (they use Nokia though).
Works for me
yupe! it works for me too. I even vid call to different provider and everything is good. Of course you need to have at least 3g connection. Better if yours is 3.5g..
3G videocall supported... Well!
But... only with stock rom?
Are there cooked roms that supports 3g videocall?
Thank you!
Cyanogen ROM does not support videocall.
So I'll never download it: I dont want a silly iPhone (people pay for a device that can't even do a video call..)
Any other ROM works ok!

All cooked roms except AOSP roms (like Cyanogen or MIUI)...the other stock-based roms support videocall

Never used videocalls (they're expensive )...I tried cyanogen...a next-gen mod! Ram management is fantastic, never had a lag....only videocamera doesn't work as expected so I had to return to stock based roms
I have videocall free of charge for one hour a day.
And i don't like to pay a device and then loose functionality.
But I know that you can't agree with me.

skype blocked fring ,what shouldwe do to use skype now onmobile?
Good question, since there's no skype for android whatsoever and that skype beta lite that was floating around is a useless piece of crap.... My guess it's we are fkt.
The first thing I noticed when I switched to android was the lack of an official skype app and I can't believe that skype completely ignores android. Maybe now that android released their SDK publicly we will seen some app that will integrate skype.
Or if skype team start doing some work they release the goddam official app.

Skype turned into Verizon's *****.
I just switched to nimbuzz, it's free in the market.
Edit: I haven't tried calling on it yet, but text is fine.
Calling works, but no video support.
calling drops on nimbuzz the sec it trys to connect.
I was testing Nimbuzz; for me it works great over WiFi, sluggish over 3G/E.. Anyway, as far as I see, right now the only skype solution..

how i tried both wifi and 3g drops the whole time
Skype for Android has been released on the Android market. Unfortunately, the app does not officially support Galaxy S devices. So some users are experiencing difficulties logging in.
http://briefmobile.com/skype-launches-on-android
I tested the app on my 2.2 Froyo JI6 Captivate and it worked well! Woohoo!
Anyone get it working too? Any problems?
i Just downloaded on 2.1 - for some reason my phone rebooted at 40% during hte download - I have never had this happen and have had the phone since launch day.
No luck signing in right now... will try a few things and report back.
Yes, there is issues with 2.1 (it's noted several times on blog post on skype website). It does work fine on leaked 2.2.
My question though, I used market enabler to download I would guess european version of Skype (I emulated T-Mobile AT). Would that mean that I can make skype calls over 3G in US (since default install in US is limited to Wi-Fi connections only for voice calls). I don't have any contacts online so can not test it.

I get a bunch of FC's on mine... sucks.... COG2.2Beta-1.... Anyone with help on this issue?
-Ken
**EDIT NVM, reboot the phone and works great! Also I would turn off automatically start its under settings under profile in Skype
It does not support any LCD Density changes... So use stock LCD density 240 and it works fine... Besides stock, not sure which setting works other than 240 now....
**
I have ji6 2.2 and its says "We're sorry, but that Skype Name does not exist" it does so not sure what the problem is. I have tried over wifi and 3g still no luck
edit*** nevermine it works fine
Works just fine for me. About time we got Skype. The beta sucked.
It's useless in US since works only on Wi-Fi. When I have WiFi connection I usually have better means calling other people then Skype.
Works fine on 3G for me. What are you talking about?

Voice calls? Chat works over 3G.
This is documented limitation for users in US. Call only over WiFi not 3G. No such limitation in other countries. Wondering how they are figuring out where you are.
I haven't been able to test out the voice call yet as nobody is online on my contacts, but chat works. There has to be some kind of a bypass for that 3G limiter...
Sorry for the double post, but I think this may be of interest to everyone. Just found it over in the main android section.

Skype on 3G for US
Edit: It doesn't seem to work on 3G at all even with the modded apk. I just tried to call my sister from the bathroom asking for more TP.
I keep getting can't sign in errors, might just be that I'm on a stock rom though.

As are most people. Like myself. It works just fine if you have 2.2
No video calls?

Working just fine on 2.2. Didn't work at all on 2.1 though as stated. Skype's site doesn't allow you to download it though (phone is not supported message). Getting it from the market works fine though on 2.2.

Can't even sign in using that.
I do use the skype beta for text chat on my captivate, which is all I need as I have many skype contacts and we text chat often.
Why would it need access to my personal information (contacts...)! No thanks.
Ok, so I tried taking a photo while on a call earlier. Appearently you CAN'T. Camera app won't even start. Anyone got a clue to why this would be? It was just so unexpected.
Cause of camera being reserved for video calling....
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
that just sucks, I used to take pics with my old K800i whilst in a call. Not tried it on my O2X yet.

How does that make sense? Is LG locking the camera because they want us to ONLY use it for video calls when we're in a call? Or do they need to have it on "standby" in the far fetched case that we'd actually need it for a video call? Can you even change between normal call and a video call? Never tried video calling.
Instead of just letting us take a ****ing photo.
Edit: more importantly, how do we bypass it?

Something like that.
Whilst only the frontcamera can be used for video calling this restriction still doesn't make any sense...

both front and rear cameras are reserved for 3G video calling.
Why does it not make sense? this is the way the phone is designed for users like myself who use 3G video calling regularly. I chose to buy this phone because of this capability - I use it to interact with my kids when I am travelling.
most video call capable mobiles are designed like this. both front and rear cameras are reserved so that you can switch between the cameras depending on what you want to display to the caller. my wife will switch her Nokia N8 to the rear camera when the kids are running around or dancing so I can see them, then switch back when she talks to me. I use my LG O2X cameras during a video call in the same way.
IMHO, it is a well designed phone. now that the stability and battery issues with the ROM are sorted out, it is a real pleasure to use as both a work phone and for fun.

I get how the camera works while in a video call. Reserving it for that purpose while in a normal call still doesn't make any more sense though. Ancient phones can do it. It's like saying you can't use the speaker for games, only music.
Hi everyone, I am wondering if I will be able to do fring to fring calling (I don't have OB looking to buy one & want to confirm).
Will I able to do video call too?

AFAIK, Skype can't use front camera with froyo. But you can try [DEV] Skype Video for Froyo (and GB) mod that work with froyo (it said there, but I haven't tried it by myself).

No you can not use the front cam yet with Fring. Like Skype will have to wait for the 2.3 update.

I don't know yet, and I won't use it either.. because Fring doesn't have encryption.
Try to install this skype version of Droidrx http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285 it works great in my OB! I can now use the front camera.
Hello.
One of my friends with a GT-i9000 want to upgrade to ICS or JB.
But he uses a lot UMTS vidéo calls. Is there any rom with that capability other than official samsung ones.
Thanks.
I've seen that even nexus S isn't capable of video calling. I think this is crazy. UMTS phone means video calling functionality. It have been available for nearly 10 years, and now that the network coverage is sufficient to use it, new phones aren't compatible.
I know it's not an easy part but we really need to have an open source implementation of that protocol.
id=2664 This is the issue on google code for official Android.
id=3763 An issue in cyanogenmod about the preceding issue not being treated by google.
I really hope this will change someday.
(No links, because no post, even if I've been here for years.)
I agree, it's really "not ok" that in our days we can't make a video call. but fortunately we can use apps like skype, tango and others.
