Hey guys.. I read a LOT on here and I can't find anything in particular about the problem i'm experiencing. This is sort of a 2 part question..
I'm new to 4G and how network packets are routed, but maybe this is just a flaw in the application. Plex is an application you can install on your IOS or Android device that lets you stream media from your home. When I have my Streak 7 connected to wifi it works GREAT. If I turn wifi off and have it on 4G it wont load.. it's as if Plex doesn't even have a connection (in the application.. the rest of the device works great). If I go out to a 3G area the application works great again.
What gives? Does the development of an application need to accept different speed networks, or once the device is connected to the net (like any typical PC) the connection performance only works as good as your speed?
This really bugs me.. I was planning on using this application to stream movies while I'm out of town on business.
Thanks in advance!
- Joe
The application doesn't support hspa+ if I had to make an educated guess. Similar things happen to my evo on wimax using other applications

Does anyone know how I can force my nexus one to a GPRS data connection (slower than EDGE)? I need to test some apps and I want it to be that slow for testing purposes.
None that I know off
There may be some custom ROM out there which could do it. But for the most part all the settings I've ever encountered are NoData/2g/3g.
Connect it over wifi to a router that can limit it's bandwidth?
I'm not sure what the point is though, I thought all GPRS networks supported EDGE by now?
As far as I know its only possible with the emulator. Why don't you use that?

Hi I was wondering if there is an app or a program for my phone or computer or maybe some settings that will make barnacle faster or speed up my 3g connection. I am using my moto dx to provide wifi to my laptop then networked the connection to a wireless router to provide internet to my wii and stream netflix.....needless to say it buffers alot and if I try to play games it boots me out of the game and I have to start over. So if there is something that can at least stabilize my connection so it is dancing arourn from 0kb/s to 1100 that would be bad ass!!!!!!! Kind of a newb here so lamance terms are good. lol using barnacle and wifi tether
A g1 isn't exactly the faster running of phones, id make sure everything I can turn off is off. You can try another app too. And if all else fails the g2 can be perma root and run a wifi tether

Um.....my phone is a Motorola droid x rooted running barnacle and wifi tetherjust looking to make the net go faster the phone is plenty fast and capable of 3-4 megabytes per second but the speed is no where near stable I just want to keep the speed stable
oohhh i assumed you had a g1 since your in the g1 forum lol my bad. ive used wireless tether and have had no issues on all my androids so far. pandora plays great, no breaks
heres the link http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Yeah I goofed up and put it in the g1 forum. Anyway I have used wifi tether also and pandora works fine for me too.......I was just currious if any one knew of an app to make things go faster for streaming movies
Would anyone know why the NC won't browse web over wi-fi via Sprint 4G? [Edit to add: This appears to be an Evo-specific issue.] NC over 3G works fine with both Wireless Tether and the Sprint Hotspot feature on the Evo. You would think wi-fi is wi-fi and it wouldn't make any difference whether it was 3G or 4G, but it does--the 4G radio won't let the NC browse web.
It's not just my setup, because I'm aware of at least one other report of this issue--in another forum.
I have tried Nooky Froyo and stock 1.01 and 1.1 NC's I have also eliminated my local Sprint Wimax antenna and environmental RF interference as the cause by trying to browse in more than one location in my city. Also tried more than one NC. I'm running EVO's 3.70.651.1 from December.
Thanks for any pointers.
Works fine for me, but I'm using an Epic, not an Evo. Have you tried using another device to make sure that your 4G connection is actually being shared properly? Keep in mind that you have to enable 4G, then turn on Wifi Tether.

Just tried your order of events. Still fails. It works as soon as you turn the 4G radio off and go back to 3G. I'm aware of one other Evo with the same problem. Your success with another device leads me to believe you're right it's an issue with the way the Evo is handling the requests.
Does anyone know what the difference is between WiMax 4G and EVDO 3g in an IP sense? Where could it hiccup?

Do you mean like a laptop on the same software/hardware wi-fi connection? If so, yes laptops work fine. It's just the Nook Color that doesn't.
Try updating wifi tether to the latest version if you haven't.
3g and 4g uses different IP addresses and interfaces (while 2g and 3g use the same radio interface and IP, which is why you can go back and forth and your file transfers won't get interrupted), this is probably the real cause of your problem. You may have an old version of Wifi Tether that doesn't enable IP masquerade on the 4g interface.
Same problem here. My PC connects fine via WiFi tether on 4G to my EVO and at good speed. My NC stalls when connected to my EVO via wifi tether on 4G. Also speedtest app is slow on dl.
I have the latest version 2.0.6.

I'm running 2.06 which is the latest I believe. This issue also exists using the Evo's Hotspot feature with a paid Sprint account add-on. I'm able to establish now that this is Evo only.
I tested this after reading your post. I am using CM6 w/o WIMAX, so had to nandroid restore Warm. I started 4G, then wireless tether. I tethered the NC to my Evo on 4G for about 15 minutes and it worked fine. Web pages loaded fully. Perhaps this short test is not too helpful, but I get crappy 4G service in my house.
When I was using the VaelPak ROM about a month ago, whenever I used 4G the browser (Dolphin HD and stock) on my phone would only load part of the web pages. This sounds similar to the issue that you are experiencing on the NC. Vael didn't have access to 4G, so couldn't isolate the problem (other VaelPak users had apparently reported similar issues).

Thanks for testing and reporting. 15 minutes is plenty of time for 4G to freeze the browser, so that test indicated a successful session. What is Warm? Is it a ROM? Your second test with VaelPak ROM echos other tests where 4G/NC won't work. The Evo stock ROM doesn't work, for example.
Using Shinzul & Toast's Gingerbread 4g alpha 3 rom for the EVO, I can tether and browse on the Nook over 4g just fine.

Yes, Warm is a popular Sense-based ROM. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471
Just to be clear, I did not test tethering the NC with the VaelPak ROM. I was just noting that I had experiences similar to the one you are describing while using that ROM on my phone -- the browser on my Evo would stop halfway through webpages when using 4G with that ROM.
It seems somewhat logical that the issue is ROM (or kernel?)-related, but it seems odd that you have success tethering everything other than the NC on 4G.
My nc connects perfectly to my evo on 4g using evio 1.8 rom from calkulin. I'm also using wireless tether, but i have had no issues.

Thanks, I can see I am going to have to try a different ROM on the EVO. However, I wonder how the NC treats internet that's different to how a laptop does? Why does everything else browse web OK on all the ROMS but not the NC?

Do you by chance have the AdFree app installed (root only) or a hosts file on your Evo that blocks ads? After trying to use 4G on various ROMs recently, I realized that AdFree was causing my web pages to to load only part way. I looked around the web and found that at least a few people were having similar issues, and they isolated the problem to AdFree. After reverting the hosts file and uninstalling AdFree, my 4G web surfing was noticeably better.
I like not seeing ads, but would rather have a functional 4G. Just thought I would share in case this might be your issue.

No, good guess though.
Hello everybody..I have weirdest question, weirdest because it seems nobody asked it before, which means I'm blind or dumb or both not to know. I just gave away new Archos 70 after ten days, not being happy with speed and such and exchange it for Galaxy Tab. So my only experience with Android comes from those 10 day with Archos, still it seems so intuitive. How do I get the Tab online?
I mean, I have one of those without 3G module and public wifi sux so it's obvious to have your tablet/PDA connected to your mobile phone over bluetooth, isn't it? Where is this tethering option which I used on Archos?
Nothing, really? Do you all have a 3G module equiped model..? Maybe I should exchange it one more time.:-/
Not sure why ppl get the wifi version, when it is so much fun to use the SGT as a phone and tab.
The only option you have with current tab is to run with wifi thru AP's or hotspots.
I would exchange for the 3G version if you have the banana's
Thanks, StarLog. Well, honestly, wifi version is way cheaper here, but that's not the only reason. I definitely do not plan to use it as a phone, I have my phone already and this is tablet. I am not going to carry it with me on every step as I do with my phone. Also, I already have data plan with my provider, why should I buy a second one especially when providers here do not mind at all? And bluetooth data connection is very common thing, I just can't believe it is not available with Galaxy.
Why bluetooth and not wifi ? Tethering is working fine. All you have to do is activate the mobile hotspot on your phone then connect the tab to it. I tried with a gsm gtab and a htc hd2 with android.

Actually, I don't use my tab as a phone, bt I do want the always on experience, opting me to go after the 3G one. For the hotspot, you can root your tab, and then grab the wifi tether app.

Doesn't your Tab have the standard WiFi Hotspot?

Is there a way get shopkick "signal" to work on my leo? I can only scan for now...
Thanks in advance
Yes i would also like to know!

If it's available use your wifi. It will allow you to connect and collect points for the proximity sensor at the entrances of stores. If wifi isn't available but you are shopping with a friend, have them turn on the mobile hotspot feature of their phone. Allowing you to connect through them.
However, shopkick still performs rather finicky causing it to be very unstable. It crashes for me quite frequently when I'm scanning. Still, collecting points for just walking in some place is pretty cool, not to mention the free stuff you can get with said points.
I've also had luck on gprs networks. Hsdpa networks don't seem to be able to connect properly for strong data transfer lvls for any app on my HD2, running froyo v3.
