[Q] UK/Galaxy S GT-I9000 Orange Network Phone to USA? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My husband, who at the time, lived in the UK bought a Galaxy S GT-I9000 cell phone on the Orange network. He was told the phone would work in the US but it doesn't. Is it possible to somehow flash this phone to a US network? If so, can you point me in the right direction? All help is greatly appreciated... thank you!

No, you can't change the hardware. But have you looked at different carrier frequencies? Maybe some of them match the Orange network.
I'm assuming Orange is GSM so maybe at&t or T-Mobile?
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App

There are a couple of ways to do this. 1. Buy a T-mo or Simple no contract for one month and buy the sims that go in it. This is easiest and about 45 bucks (29-quid)
Or there is a way to make the phone register through Tmo but if I remember correctly the surcharge on the phone for being out of country is more expensive. This way you need to use the test codes and go into the gsm settings and force it to only look at a certain band. This i have done not stellar results but i did get it to work.
Buying the short term no contract w/ sims is just WAY easier and cheaper
hope that helps...........

Thanks for the help. We are going to try getting the T-Mobile sim card. We'll let know how it works out.

Before you buy one, have one of the techs take out a sim that they are using for a demo-phone to make sure there are no problems before purchasing.
Enjoy your stay in the USA....... *** wow.... they have fish "n" chips just like us in the USA***......George Bush quote...........

will ask them to try for me, thanks again for the advice, i would have just bought it....;~}

Heading to Ireland... sim unlock question

ok, hopefully I wont get flamed but havent found the 5 y/o answers than I need.... I have a Tilt with AT&T, Im using an WM6.0 Alex ROM (may switch to Duttys)... Ill be heading to Ireland this weekend for a week and I wanted to make sure I understood exactly how I can use my phone when Im over there...
I know how I can get the code for Sim Unlocking the phone but I was curious about where I should get the new sim card and how rates will apply for me when Im over there...
Assuming I get the unlock code from AT&T:
1. Where should I purchase the sim card to use in Ireland?
2. Do I need to call AT&T to get an international plan for any reason?
3. What carrier would I be using while Im in Ireland?
4. What rates would apply for me calling the US or in country?
Any help would be appreciated... applying flame retardant gel now... go...
1. Go to Ireland local phone retailers to buy a SIM card.
2. No. If you don't want to receive call from your America phone #.
3. Your choice.
4. Once you pick the carrier, go to their website to see the rates.
It kinda makes me sad how people are afraid to make new threads now..
makes me wonder which direction web-forums are going.
Sorry, little OT
Your US Tilt should work fine with no change in SIM card, though the local calling rates will probably be a lot higher. I just got back from a swing through about 5 or 6 European countries (including the UK, but not Ireland) with my US Tilt and I was able to make and receive calls in all of them.
AT&T does offer a $5/mo International plan that cuts 20% or so off the per minute rates, but I didn't bother signing up for it as I expected to make only a few calls.

So do I even need to sim unlock it then?
if you are planning to use your own sim card in ireland and pay the roaming rates then you will not need to sim unlock your phone and you will be contactable on your current phone number.
if however you decide to purchase a sim card in ireland, you will have to sim unlock your phone. I know that this is meant to be relatively straightforward but I never had to do it.
If you decide to get an irish sim card you have the following options:
Meteor: http://www.meteor.ie/personal/pay_as_you_go/price_plans/
o2: http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/Home/Personal/Price+plans/Speakeasy+prepay/O2+Experience
Vodafone: http://www.vodafone.ie/planscosts/prepay/current/
There are 2 other operators in ireland, tesco and 3 but they are very unpopular. I'm currently with o2 which offers the best value for me. If you want a relatively unbiased view go to the carphone warehouse as they sell all brands of sim-card and will recommend the most suitable
Whatever you do don't connect to the internet whilst in ireland except using wi-fi as data costs are ridiculous.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

If I get a sim in Ireland, will that give me a new number that works on that network?

It will be like totally dumping AT$T, number and all, and switching to a brand new carrier

Would that cancel my AT&T account then?

Not unless you cancel it. It would look to them as if your phone was off while you were using another SIM card.
So it sounds like I should only use an Ireland sim card if I plan to do a lot of local calling... If I only plan on calling US numbers then I should just keep my AT&T sim card and pay the international rates... is this correct?
Im going to take no response as a yes...
You'll be charged 1.29 per minuite or .99 cents depending on your plan with AT&T no matter where you call.

I'm so sorry this has to be my first post..

Hey XDA - I've been a browser forever, but I just signed up;
because I am in diiiiiiiiire need of some help.
I'm really sorry this has to be my first thread.
I promise I'm not a troll, and I promise I'll contribute as
much as I possibly can!
I have a situation I am in -
I currently have a Nexus One, on T-Mobile U.S.
It's completely stock, no hacks or roots, mods or anything.
To make a long story short - I'll be switching phones and providers soon (Evo), but I would like to give this phone to my girlfriend, who happens to live in the United Kingdom. She's on the O2 network, and has all the data/plan stuff covered already, I just need to get the phone working for her when she pops in her SIM card.
From what I've gathered, it seems like the Nexus One WILL work on O2 with both 2G and 3G speeds, if this is true; can someone verify?
"O2 use 2100MHz for 3G and 900/1800MHz for GSM (2G - Voice/GPRS).
The Nexus One supports these frequencies for both services."
Also, I've never unlocked, or rooted a phone before. This phone would NEED to be unlocked for her to be able to use it, right? Is it possible to unlock a phone without rooting it? I really am new to all of this. She's not a power user, so I'd like her to keep the stock build and get all the updates. Is that possible? To unlock the phone and keep everything stocked?
Can someone maybe help with that? Or should I just follow one of those guides to "unlock and flash the rom" guides that I've found all over the internet? I really want to just keep everything stock for her, with the exception of the phone being unlocked.
Whatever happens, will the Android market still be working for her?
Does anyone know how Google Maps would work on the phone for her, in the UK?
I'm basically in love with the girl, and we're trying to do everything we can to make the best of a long distance relationship. The main reason I want her to have an android phone (mine) is for her to be able to use Fring with me, and Google Chat - so I'd really hope those apps worked in the UK.
Any help on unlocking this bad boy is much appreciated.
Thank you XDA,
You guys are awesome - and I have all the respect in the world for you.
Hey Dude,
my US Nexus is working fine on O2 here in germany and there are no problems with 3G and 2G, so no worries. And afaik no Nexus One is sim-locked.
Hope this helps.

That actually does help a lot - but,
did you purchase the unlocked Nexus from Google?
I can't confirm, but I've heard that both are different,
the T-Mobile version being sim locked.
I also have the APN settings from O2 U.K already
- I'm aware of that part.
Hi, I am on o2 in the uk and the nexus works Just fine (2g & 3g). Also, I thought the nexus wasn't sim locked, I certainly never had to unlock mine.

Was yours purchased unlocked though?
Thank you
Europe uses the same bands in every country. Its a direction from the European Union so every phone bought in Europe will work in every country in Europe.
Coincidentally, T-MO US uses the same bands so you won't have any trouble with it. I have the T-MO US version here in Romania and works fine on 2G and 3G.
I don't think its sim locked. You should put an att sim in it, although you're only gonna get 2G. But that will show you if its sim locked or not.
I am pretty sure that although Google were selling the Nexus with a T-Mobile option there are no sim- or netlocked Nexus Ones - simply for the fact that Google did not want that. That is also how Vodafone handles the Nexus distribution here in germany: There is an option for a bundle with a contract and the Nexus you get with it is not sim- or netlocked.
Also, to answer another question of you: Yes, your gf will be able to use all functions (market, maps, etc.) without any rooting-action necessary.

That was a genius suggestion.
Popped in a co-workers ATT sim, and it worked
just fine with absolutely zero issues. Thank you!
AHHH I am so relieved. DDDDDDDDDDDDDD!
Siggi : Thank you also for that bit of information, you guys really just took a huge weight off my chest.
1. It will be fully functional on the provider you specified.
2. There is no such thing as SIM-locked Nexus.
3. It's fun using Fring video to show people places.
just for our your clarification: EVERY NEXUS ONE SOLD IS UNLOCKED, and, IT WILL WORK IN THE UK.
Settled.

Exactly.
I also got a Nexus One from Google US and it's working without any problems in germany.
Just remember, even though your Nexus One is unlocked, if you are on contract with T-Mobile and you cancel early, you will have to pay an ETF.

Anyone want to buy me an HD7

I want an HD7 and wondered if any XDA-member could purchase one from o2 and i would pay them through PayPal and they could ship me the phone. I am in the US and on AT&T
Why don't you just go down to Walmart? They have them there already. Besides you'r on ATT and will get no 3g I thought with one from O2? I believe you need one from Telstra (Australian) network and your 3g will work.

I see the rebel sim cards are being developed for wp7 so perhaps 3g is still in the game if i get a tmobile version. I s being on edge versus 3g really that big of a difference anyway?
oh yeah, it's like swimming in tar lol (edge).
Isn't the phone Quad Band? Surely the device will work on all of the GSM networks?
I hope it's that or it's going to be quite a mission finding the right device to work on the right networks int the right countries.
in the u.s., the only 2 big gsm carriers (at$t, t-mo) operate on different bands. the rest of the world is ok lol, the telstra(sp) operates on at$t w/ 3g, any one else on t-mo gets edge.

Ah, ok
So would the T-Mobile HD7 work on standard GSM bands (900MHz and 1800MHz for South Africa)?

[Q] Going to the US for 10 Days, AT&T PrePaid Question? HELP me Americans!

Hey,
So I'm leaving for the Good'Ol USA tomorow. (Oregon, specifically) for 10 days.. and my family and I would like to have some sort of cell phone to use while down there.
Now, I have an unlocked Samsung Infuse..
Can I buy an AT&T PrePaid (Pay as you go) SIM card, and just pop it in my Infuse while we're down there? Or will AT&T recognize it as a smartphone, and try and charge me for a full month's service, on some kind of expensive plan?
I honestly have no idea how these things work.. if someone could shed some light that would be awesome!
You will be fine so long as your Infuse isn't an AT&T branded one. I use foreign phones here on AT&T to get past the anemic smartphone plan.
Hey Dylan. I think you can get prepaid SIMs for voice but not sure about how much data costs on their prepaid plans. You should be able to pick up a prepaid phone with SIM at one of the bigbox stores like Walmart.

Bring a couple Bell Sensations or Rogers GS IIs when you come over.

Thanks for the reply Mike!
Ok, so I probably won't be able to use my AT&T branded Infuse? Because it will be recognized by AT&T as a smartphone?
I'll probably just get a prepaid phone, then buy prepaid minutes. I'm not looking for data or anything, just simple voice to make a few calls back to Canada.
Oh, and I would if I could! Lol, I haven't seen anything good show up locally! and I think you mean Bell Samsung Galaxy S2!, not Rogers!
Ah, Bell is getting lucky these days! The Sensation and the GSII! That's insane.. but I guess Rogers is getting the EVO 3D and the Optimus 3D.
What about T-Mobile Pay as you go? Has always worked well for me. Or perhaps your phone does not support the T-Mobile bands...

Can you use t-mobile nexus one on at&t?

Hello,
I am going to be selling my N1 on ebay and I didn't want to misadvertise. I purchased my N1 off contract and used it on t-mobile. Does my phone support AT&T? And if someone on AT&T buys my phone will they get 3G service on it?
Thanks
The T-Mobile N1 can work on AT&T but only on Edge as they use a different 3G frequency not supported by the T-mobile hardware. There is a separate AT&T compatable model, but they are harder to come by.
So it would be silly for someone on att to get my phone?

It all depends on how they want to use it. If they are wanting to use it as a dev phone for apps / ROMs etc..., then 3G is not as critical. If they are wanting to use it as their daily driver, then they may want something else.
As long as you state in the description that this is not compatable with AT&T 3G, you should be covered. How the buyer uses the purchase is up to them.
majority of people would say its crazy to buy a tmobile nexus one for ATT use as there would be no 3g. so yes its almost like false advertising. sure, it would work on edge. but just be up front about it.
Ok. Thanks for the input
