Has anyone noticed their NC is very sensitive to water on the screen? I find even if the tiniest few drops of misty rain land on it, it's fine for a few seconds and then once I try touching it, the screen totally glitches out and starts detecting spurious touches. If I sleep the screen and turn it back on, that usually fixes it.
In a city like Vancouver this could end up being a deal breaker ;-) I don't expect a water proof tablet but my touch phones like the Milestone and Nexus One have typically withstood little bits of moisture on the screen without impairing usability.
Repeatable test: Open MultiTouch Tester, wet your finger. Swipe it around the perimeter of the screen a few times. Wait a few seconds. Repeat. Wait a few seconds. At some point when you aren't touching the screen, you'll start to see spurious touches appearing on the screen. If you wait even longer for those touches to stop, then the screen will become totally insensitive to all input. Sleep and back on fixes it.
Theyre called screen protectors.. use em.

Can someone confirm if the same behaviour persists with a screen protector?
I don't own a screen protector but I tried putting a piece of plastic wrap over top to test the behaviour. I wet my finger and trace a few circles on the screen through the wrap. I still get the spurious touches even though the water never contacts the screen. The moment I lift up the wrap, the spurious touches stop but the screen is again unresponsive. I have to sleep it off and on before it works again.
Since all screen protectors are some type of plastic or other, I have a feeling this problem would still happen with a protector.
And here is my video showing the "experiment" (no protector/wrap).

Again, same results with plastic in between the water and the screen.

Had the same problems but putting on a screen protector fixed it. No random touches. No need to turn the screen off/on. So much better.
Using this one.
confirmed. it still does it will screen protector. tested with ipad and itouch too see if this was a capacitive screen issue. water had no effect on those too devices. Doesn't really matter because I don't plan using this device outside in the rain.
Well I wouldn't take it out in a torrential storm, but sometimes it's just "spitting" out as it often is in the Pacific northwest, and I'm reading a book or article at the bus stop. And then suddenly it's flipping random pages or launching unwanted apps.

This is probably related to the common phantom touches people get. I know my nook some times register random touches from hovering fingers up to an inch from the screen.
Too much dirt/grease on the screen will also do it. The screen on the NC is (by default) very sensitive.. There are a few methods to "calibrate it", some of which say if you're touching it while calibrating the sensitivity goes down.
I've seen this several times myself, and yeah it's annoying because it goes NUTS. One time I had it remove an app from my launcher, launch another app, then change some settings. I was like wtff gaaahhhhh
No screen protector on mine.. I usually do on devices, just haven't on this one yet.
It's a capacitive screen. A drop of water can make the screen behave strangely because the capacitance of the screen changes where the water is. Multiple drops of water will drive the screen nuts. This isn't new. If you hands are too dry the screen won't register the touch.
It is how they work.......
BN brand matte (anti-glare) screen protector has completely, I mean 100% no lie, fixed this problem for me. In addition, the screen loses it's "tackiness". It's a pleasure using the screen now.

This is something i noticed with my device, the screen protector iv had it on ever since i got my mda vario III, today i removed it cose there was dust collecting at the edges of the screen where it couldn't reach as its smaller than the screen then i notice the device was performing alot faster to make sure i wasn't just seeing things i tried playing a game of FPSEce before all were really slow average 10fps when actually playing now i get it around 20fps the game was actually playable not perfectly of course but still alot better. Again this is a possible effect of the lack of drivers if we get screen protector companies on your side who knows i mean who would buy one if it slowed down their ppc which would lower their business.
Lol , the only conclusion i can give you is that your screen protector was actually continuously pushing the touch screen somewhere.
Resulting in the ever lasting htc touchscreen driver bug eating cpu cycles.
You can always check this with an app that shows cpu usage.

Batterystatus used to show it as low
The screenprotector does not weigh enough to be able to create a force large enough to activate the screen.
Here is a different theory: the screen protector does not let heat to diffuse through the screen, outside. Hence, the device become warmer, and the CPU throttle down...

It does if it goes under an edge... my touch stopped working, cause it got slipped under the edge and therefore was exerting force on the screen.
this is impossible because our screens are only single touch, if it was always being pressed then that means the press from out finger or stylus wouldnt work or it wouldnt press most of the time. you would find it very messed up. havnt u ever tried pressing in 2 places on the screen with a paint program or drawing just for fun?
i could see the screen protector "pressing" on the screen if it was stretched or shrunken.
however, have you ever taken a ball point pen and tried to write on a stack of papers? you eneded up with a clear "dent" on the second page, but a barely visible "dent on the third. the screen protectors make the screen less sensitive because it's just another layer. try doubling the sensitivity in your registry from 7000 to 14000 and see if it helps a little. (or the oil from your skin will eventualy collect enough dust, that if you do any heavy literary work on your PPC; you will surely wear out your screen)
I have a couple of light scratches on my screen from drawing; so i prefer the screen is less exact, but protected.
(keep in mind you create friction when you run plastic on plastic; and friction creates heat, brazing the tip of your stilus, ocasionaly making it sharper than it should be.)
I suppose thats how I see it.
ok it doenst happen when i lay the phone down on the surface and click on the screen it works perfectly
however when i hold it with my right hand and touch the middle of the screen with my thumb
it opens up phone dialer, or appdrawer or vibrante cause it clicks the capacitive button.
when i hold it with my left hand it gets a little bit better but it still does.
if i hold the nexus carefully and touch the screen , it works, when i hold it like this
the things gets better when i put a thick case like otterbox..
is this a hardware issue? ( found similar video on youtube)
my phone is rooted but can i still get a replacement phone?( already put everything back to stock)
and if i do get a replacement, are they going to charge me with anything?
my current nexus one trackball doenst scroll up but everything else works.
How many of you guys got a replacement even though your phone was rooted?
Make sure part of your hand doesn't touch the screen.

it's a hardware issue...
all you can do is not grip the phone too closely to the edge of the screen. It registers touches even if you are not touching the screen completely. But that to be a problem you have to have giant hands
I've had this happen to me once since I had it from launch day. It did happen with my Otterbox commuter series, and a clarivue screen protector. But I turned it off and on again and it was fine.
anyway as stevio jobsio whould say, you're holding it wrong

ok so it is a hardware issue?
no i am not touching any part of the screen. i made sure i wasnt touching the screen.
but it does happen when i hold my phone closely to the edges.
i never had this kind of issues with other touch screen phones..
Well I dunno... One finger at a time and your good to go unless you got fat hands lol

I can confirm that my device too does this. When lying in bed I browse the net with one hand and try and scroll....the edges of the touchscreen seem to register depression when the chassis is pushed or gripped too hard also.
It's a minor irritation to me, but I agree it is a hardware issue.
Since day one, I've had touchscreen issues. When the charger is plugged in, the keyboard is unusable. One touch triggers keys all over the place faster than I could ever touch the screen. Unplugging the charger fixes that issue.
After a while, phantom presses start happening. If an app supports multitouch zoom, it becomes impossible to scroll instead of zooming. Keeping the screen clean seems to delay the problem from happening. If the problem presents, just cleaning the screen won't help. I have to turn the display off and back on for any effect. I've heard putting on a screen protector helps with this issue, but I haven't had a chance get one. If the screen protector just masks the issue, that doesn't seem like a good fix.
Should I try to get a replacement Nook Color now that doesn't have these issues or should I wait until the last month of my warranty to see if I can get more developed hardware? There doesn't seem to be a consensus if these issues are hardware or software.

That must be frustrating. Mine does not behave this way at all (though I've only had it for 4 days). If you bought it in the store, I'd exchange it. If you bought it via the BN ebay store, I'd try the screen protector first as I hear it's quite an ordeal returning it via ebay.
This us a very common issue. It has something to do with sensitivity of the screen increasing greatly when the unitbis charging or the screen brightness is way up. I just chage mine at night and don't worry about it.
I was having a lot of problems with phantom touches -- I even replaced my 2nd NC just to get another one that had the same issue. I ended up putting on a B&N anti-glare screen protector and haven't witnessed any phantom touches since then.
Edit: I actually meant to post this in the other phantom touches thread. ;/
Happens a lot to me even while unplugged. Known issue. Until I pick up a B&N screen protector I find locking the device and a quick wiping of the screen with a microfiber or any soft cloth (my shirt works in a pinch) removes moisture and oil build-up that is causing the uber-sensitive digitizer to register phantom touches.

I have experimented with various screen protectors on the Moto X. The one that I have on now covers the left side portion by the ear speaker. I have also seen screen protectors that purposely have this area cut out of the screen protector. I believe that this is where the light sensor is. I have been trying this screen protector out for a couple days (it is a anti-glare kind and is opaque) I have noticed that the active notifications don't come on as much...however, this may all be in my head. Curious if anyone else had tested this. See attached picture.
The screen protector I used ( Xtreme guard) has an extra area cut out to the left of the speaker, i guess for the proximity/light sensors..
and I don't have any issues with active notifications.. maybe you can cut it out?
That is the proximity / light sensor. Play with it when you're in a call - cover it up with your finger, and the screen goes off, remove your finger, and the screen comes back on. That's how your phone knows it's up to your face and to turn the screen off so you don't accidentally face dial. Some screen protectors don't affect it, others seem to. I don't doubt that your active notifications are funny if that piece is covered up. I had a tempered glass protector on that covered it. I had some issues with the screen not coming on when I took my phone away from the face to end the call. Sometimes active display would randomly turn on when the phone was sitting still on my desk. After I switched to a different brand that didn't cover it up, my problems went away.
Thank you for the info. I had a feeling that there was something up because it was acting a little random after putting that protector on. I don't think all companies really test their accessories on the phones they make them for...other than that they fit okay but not if they affect performance. Those test would take too much time. Funny thing is I got them from a Sprint store and they were $20 for two :/ . I found some, actually the exact one's Moto's sight selling, on Amazon for around six dollars something and they have a space cut out for that area.
I play some games and I played one game which made problems with my phone's glass - Petroleum Tycoon.
So I was playing it couple hrs a day non-stop because I played with my friend. After couple of minutes (5-10) non-stopping I could feel hotness in that particular place where I swipe. I played it maybe 1-2 weeks. After these weeks I saw that in my swiping area there was a visible mark which does not prevent from working but when turning screen off and pointing screen to light or sunlight you can see it. Is there any magical cure which will remove that mark back?
I tried to clean the screen but after I touch it all over the screen it's visible again.
Sorry for poor quality photo because I don't have a camera or phone with good camera(And I don't have my tablet)

There are liquids to clean screen, if it doesn't work you can try a little isoprpyl alcohol. If it does not work, the glass coating was removed, maybe a screen protector (plastic or glass) can make it less visible.
