Hi,
The camera on my I9000 never takes clear pictures.
I can see it trying to focus, but is scans from unfocussed, through the focused point and then on past it, and fails to stop when in focus.
Have there been any reported problems like this? If so, how does one fix them?
I posted about this with mine the other day. it always seems to be just out of focus but I came to the conclusion that I am expecting to much of a 5mp phone camera.
Try using another app from the market to see if it works. If that fails best bet to fix this is to factory restore your phone.
Use the [mod] hacked camera.apk this will do the trick : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980835
I found a work around. Instead of pressing only the take picture button, i now tap the screen to focus a particular area. When it goes green, then tap the take pic button.

Dear fellas,
Although this topic has been briefly discussed in various locations, it hasn't gotten "big" enough.
I know a number of ya guys are having this problem. The touch-sensitive action button used to focus does not focus the camera (and yes, I have set it to "touch & press").
Mine works intermittently, in fact, doesn't work most of the time. I know it's 100% not a hardware problem, as the button lights up and brightens up my screen according to normal behavior. Now I'm wondering, for those guys who don't have this problem, do U have a different version of the camera app?
K.. mine's the stock HK 1.93.831 ROM and my cam app is version 6.00 (build 31516).
I'm not sure what causes this problem. Although I'm not a camera freak, but this prob makes my baby "imperfect".
Pls post yr ROM and camera version (I wonder if there's a difference) and state if youre experiencing this problem. Thanks!
Hi MasK,
I'm having the same problem as you, the "touch & press" feature didn't work most of the time.
I'm using HTC SG ROM 1.37.871.3, camera version 6.0 (Build 31364).
I used to think the camera didn't focus properly until I took some time to play with it. It's pretty slow, but mine seems to work. When I touch the button, it will take anywhere from 1-5 seconds to focus, and then the cross-hair turns green and beeps to indicate focus lock. At first I didn't realize I needed to wait for the beep, so my shots were out of focus. Seems to work fine now that I know that.
I'm currently on stock 1.37.401.3 with camera 6.0 Build 31364 ... same as previous post, just a different ROM region, which I doubt makes a difference.
i have a similar problem where i run the camera app, then the 1st time i place my thumb over the button nothing happens, but if i take my thumb away and try again it will work fine.
It will continue working fine untill i restart the camera app, just never registers the 1st attempt.
This does show that there is some serious prob with this functionality. For me, it's the first time that has a higher chance of working.. not subsequently.
How abt the rest? We needa find out what's causing this!
upz...
Anymore ppl having this prob?
Same here. Most of the time, including 1st time also fails.
+1, most of the time I have to click on the button to do the focus + photo. When I just touch, the camera tries to focus but the square doesn't become green. Sometimes there's no white square at all.
Hi,
mine recognizes the first touch so it focuses correctly but after i take the picture, it doesn't focus anymore when i touch it. actually i just found out about this focus thing and tested. until now i always just pressed the button when trying to make pictures and it always makes a focus and then capture the image. is this OK or it makes them better if i first let him focus and then press the button all the way?
p.s. i do have "touch and press" selected.
p.s.2: is there any way i can change exposure time or something like that so my pictures won't get blurry when my hand shakes or something? many of my pictures are fuzzy because i don't really have a steady hand :-s
Best regards,
Florin

Yep that's how it works and I don't seem to be having problems, just tried doind a few shots and it works perfectly.
Everytime I touch the center button the white square appears and the camera does the autofocus until it turns green. Then I change the orientation and do the same again. I just did it 6 times in a row and the autofocus worked perfectly all the times.
I had this problem with all my previous ROMs.. I am now on Bepe's 0.96 which has the latest camera app and the problem is no longer there - I can touch and press to activate the autofocus as many times as I want after shooting as many photos as I want. No problems now.

Cool.. so it goes to show it's a pure firmware issue. I'm wondering perhaps it's due to registry tweakings that creates this problem.
Any more feedbacks?
Is there a difference in quality if it makes the focus on touch and picture on press versus focus and picture on press?

No difference in quality, however with the "touch-then-press" focus you see a focused picture on the display before taking the shot.
Mask,
Can you tell me what is the camera app version in Bepe's 0.96 Rom?
I just changed the camera capture setting to "press" rather then "touch and press".
Now all I have to do is point at what i want. Then just press the button down and it does all the auto focussing itself and then takes the pic.
Couldn't be easier.

I actually prefer the 'touch and press' option, because I might end up needing to re-adjust my position before taking the shot.. and having the 'touch' to autofocus, before 'press' to shoot allows me to do so.
@MasK: I don't think it's a firmware issue or related to registry tweaks, but more a issue related to the camera app - bepe noted that it was a newer version (thus you won't see the Resolution icon in the Settings anymore - you can still change the resolution via Advanced settings). You could ask bepe more about the camera app and whether he did any tweaking in regards to the camera.

Yeah I know what your saying, I tend to just point n click, let it auto-focus once clicked and take the pic. As long as I'm pointing at what I want and I'm as far zoomed in as I choose then it's fine. I'll take a load at a time and then just delete the unwanted ones later.
But none the less I think the general point is that everything should work!

Quite right. I do not see why HTC overlooked this problem. Seems to me that HTC rushed the release of the Diamond without going through more intense test phases.

Completely agree, it's plain to see now that the phone was rushed. I know for a fact that if I hadn't found this site and wasn't able to flash the thing with new ROMS and applications etc then I probably wouldn't of bought it.
In effect this site is doing the work that HTC should of done in the 1st place. We shouldn't be finding ways around their problems by simply saying "oh doing it this way doesn't bother me". It would of been nice to have the thing working smoothly from release.
But then again this is half the fun right? Mucking around with new ROMs and apps to set it up how each individiual likes.
I know that I would feel sorry for anyone with a brand new HTC Touch Diamond that is still at factory settings!
The one I am running now pisses on the phone it was 2 weeks ago
I had my X1 for about 4 months now....basically with a stock rom R1A (i'll update when R3A is out), stock panel manager and stock camera software.
Yesterday i was playing around with the camera and i ust found out that the auto focus doesn't always work all the time. Is this normal?
I assume the normal procedure is, I semi press the camera button, then the auto focus starts to work. The little white square shows up and the green circle also flashes rapidly on the top left corner. The picture will then start to focus and if it succeed it will show 3 green square. This is on auto focus anyway. When on touch focus it only shows one square.
The problem is now, sometimes the camera will refuse to auto focus. I semi press the camera button, the little green circle flashes but not as rapid as it is when it is focusing. The little white square is gone, and no matter how long i press it the picture just wont focussing.
Worth to note that this doesn't happen all the time....but it does annoys you when you are trying to take a picture and this happen.
Is this a hardware bug? software? something to do with light? or i just simply did something wrong? i haven't got a clue....
i would appreciate if anybody can help me....
P.S: does upgrading rom and using the new R3A camera software solve this problem?
me too.
press the button and sometimes it will focus on it's own and then at other times - day / night / moving / whatever - it doesn't.
i'm on stock R1A although added the MUCH IMPROVED R3A camera software... same old focus story though.

hmm....if i have to take a wild guess it could have something to do with the shutter...
but i dont know...can anyone else shed some light on this? any help would be appreciated
does it occur only when it is dark?
no,it could happen any time. not just at dark or any specific time...
drspain also point that out too...

I've completed my scientific testing and the results are as follows:
1. Auto-focus is random -at best- in performance. Again, doesn't matter whether it is day, light, night, dull, landscape, macro etc... it sometimes takes a shot, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, you press the button and walk away. 2 steps later 'CATCHHODDSSS' it takes a snap of your shoe or something sideways.
2. Best performance is with infiniti focus on using R3A software.
3. Definite difference between colour and saturation using landscape mode and auto mode or sports. Landscape seems to try and 'warm' images. TBH, auto is fine, even for most things.
4. The camera in the P1i is superior. I wonder why Sony didn't stipulate using the same tech... they are both 3.2 monkey pastels.
Cheers,
DrS
well, i've done my research too and i'd like to say that i've been unable to recreate the situation. It's focusing all the time now...no problem at all
weird...
and i havent done any upgrade and such.
Best thing we could say about this, is that this things occurs randomly
Well i can say one thing ....after switching to infinite ...its become better..doesnt take time to focus ..i.e capturing the moment we want or else it used to keep focusing and then the moment u want to capture is gone already...well i feel in infinite the focusing is also fair enough i think same as with focus...
As we all know, our Droid 3 camera seems to have a problem with blue tinted shots, also taking photos can sometimes take veeeery long. We are all waiting for an update.
I found out, that you can take photos with the "ok" button on the keyboard, especially long-pressing this button forces the camera to focus correctly, this makes it much more easy to take macro-photos.
What do you think?
The first time I tried it I got a FC, but it seems to be a little bit more stable using the OK button. Thanks for the tip!
Good to hear, you're welcome.
Thanks - trick works on XT860 4G (the Canadian variant). I can't get it to focus with long press (still takes a pic), but I guess this is due to continuous autofocus it does (I believe I enabled such thing somewhere in settings).
I wish they had the camera button left on the phone though.. Or maybe since camera takes crappy pics, they decided it is not worth placing button for it

works for me. interesting find. none of the other key combinations do anything, so it must have something to do with button focus in the app. the arrow keys didn't seem to change the focus, so that's a plus.
now if only there were a way to get the app to open faster. i wonder if you can force it into cached memory somehow.
Anyone else having a problem where they take a photo, and then it goes to the upper left to indicate that it was saved, but then when you go to retrieve the photo later its no longer there?
@ jediman
Haven't experienced this, did you change your storage location for the camera to sd card? If you have been doing some adb or plugging into computer the phone might need a restart to get proper access to the card again.
-smc
The camera has a poor quality, i am not happy with it. I wish i wouldn't have rooted so quikly, waiting for unroot to return phone. I was happy with my Dinc and might just get the Dinc 2.
You bought the phone for its camera??
I just use camera 360. The blue tint issue doesn't happen with flash like it does with stock camera app. Only thing about camera 360 is no ffc support yet.

as much as i like some of c360's features, there's alot that drives me not to use it. the "widescreen" mode stretches the image, you can't review that last pic taken (that i can tell), there's no video option and it appears at the top of the list in battery usage (92%!).
I've been using Camera ZOOM FX... it seems to take fairly decent photos, and is much faster than the normal camera app that comes with the phone.
Stock, unrooted, newly purchased Moto G5S Plus. I'm having an issue with the camera. It seems to not want to focus (or un-blur) 90% of the time. The other 10% (during which I have no idea what sort of magic I've done) it takes wonderful photos. I've tried third-party apps, clearing the cache in recovery, and Safe Mode. I'm upset and Motorola doesn't seem to want to help me. I'm just outside the return period (thanks for that, Motorola!) and am wondering what the community here thinks? I can always try to root and install a custom ROM but I don't know if that will help.
Hey so I've discovered if I tap my knuckles against the back of my phone either on or near the rear camera the picture immediately clears. The issue keeps happening and the tapping trick keeps working -- the tapping trick does not result in the picture going blurry again so I'm guessing it's an issue with software and not hardware. Just wanted to throw this out there in case someone else was having the same problem.
Motorola did tell me to send the phone back, but this was before I tried tapping it. I really don't want a used phone (this is my first new phone in like forever) so I'm tempted to just keep it as-is and hope the tapping keeps working.
Picture processing is terrible on this phone...
And it doesn't seem this phone is having good camera sensors..
Pictures come out blurry most of the times...
Anyways you can always try gcam after flashing a 64bit rom...

Tapping on the phone causing proper focus would indicate a hardware problem. You should return under warranty.
Hi, when I'm using the stock camera software on my up-to-date, non-rooted A2, with the front facing camera, many times, it's impossible to click on the "taking a picture" button right after taking a picture, it's like frozen for half a minute or so.
It's very annoying since my gf is obsessive with taking different angles of the same photo, and it keeps us smiling like stupid for a long time without being able to take pictures...
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
Edit: I think that a viable workaround may be an app that can take high quality picture with the front camera, and is able to take a few pictures in a row (I downloaded some, but some of them shows me the picture after taking it, instead of going back to the camera screen, and some seems to lower the quality of the photos compare to the stock app).
Many thanks!
