[Q] Android rooting and flashing - LG Optimus 2x

I've searched the forums but I couldn't find an answer which a noob can understand.
1. What exactly is Fr7?
2. What do I need to flash a rom?
3. How do I root my phone?
4. Are there any negative consequences to rooting?
5. How can I back-up everything?
I think this is all for now. I'm sorry to bother you guys but every thread I've read uses slang I do not understand.

[Q] Flash questions not in the FAQ.

forum data loss is very annoying... I'll see if I'm patient enough to ask this as well as the first time: reposting as new thread.
The BIG FAQ is a great general information source for android hacker noobs, samsung or ohterwise. I am trying to understand something missing here and confused elsewhere. I want to know how factory default recovery works in detail. First this requires an understanding of what information exists on the device (from factory or a flash) and how it's organized and used (please read on before saying the FAQ answers this).
1) Where does a flash put information? Are all the major OS parts (core, phone, CSC) on one partition or on a few? I've seen my phone do some installations after a reset, installing apks I think, I guess these are from the CSC which makes me think it's not (fully) applied to the working directories during the flash, could be on a separate partion, but maybe not and it's just finalizing installation on the same partition. (unpacking, registering etc...) I don't know.
2) related: Is the working copy of /system the one and only copy or is there a master copy made during a flash that is reverted to during a reset.
Example: If I root a phone with an exploit (NOT A FLASH) and still have stock ROM and then delete a system apk... did I delete the only copy of that apk or will a recovery restore it.
I've read people say that a factory reset doesn't lose root, but that doesn't get to the point since many or most people get root by flashing a new ROM.
3)Are the answers the same for every phone?
4)I forgot part 4 but I think it was a good question the first time around .
(edit: I remeber part 4, is there only 1 type of factory reset? ok not that good.)
Thanks.
bump.. who's the jerk voting this one star?
Yes there's a noobish element to it,
Yes it COULD go in Q an A
BUT
1) I found a thread here with two senior mods arguing whether some phone, I think galaxy S has a hidden partition somewhere possibly holding the system backup. Ok maybe it was old.. but I didn't see any definitive answer so it's not THAT noobish.
2) It could go in Q and A, but the BIG FAQ is here.. and. it's relevant to develoment/flashing why?... Obviously it's related to how much risk people take when mucking with files in their phone.. ie will they need a flash of just a reset. Also could bring new ways to get ROMS without flashing anything... just ideas.. but clearly not so out of place.
If the answer is so obvious, then just say it. You knew it was a question before you read and rated it.
I can go test this by moving a file and resetting my phone. But if it's really so obvious a quick reply sure would save the trouble.

[Q] Root-ing Samsuns Galaxy S 2.3.4

I apologize if this thread is in the wrong place, I read around the forum and couldn't find anything related to rooting a SGS with 2.3.4 .
Please be patient with me I am new at this, but i read about the fact that rooting your phone can drastically improve your phone's performance as well as get rid of those annoying adds in the apps and it grants you the ability to use cracked apps. So my request to this fine community is: Can someone please post a complete guide on how to root a samsung gaalaxy s running 2.3.4 or post a link to such a guide? And please keep in mind I don't know a lot of things about this so i could really use a detailed guide. I want to thank you in advance for your time and your patience.
I'm not blaming you but you could have done a little reserch before

If it helped you -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\/
Thank you for your post, I will try this guide and give some feedback, once agian thank you.
I would also like a guide on how to unroot the device and go back to my current software ( 2.3.4 XXJVQ) in case something goes wrong. Once again thank you for your help and your patience.
google my friend
if it goes wrong it's not cause of the root. juste try another firmware.
One last question: I just read that rooting and flashing are 2 different things. Does this mean that once I follow the guide posted above(which says its rooting but once i read a bit it actually seems to mean flashing) I will have full right on my phone or do I have to root it afterwards ?
Actualy this is just about rooting.
if you want a flash :

It won't be rooted after this. Apply the first tuto for root.

NOOB question about ROOT

Hi, this is noob question about root, its my first android phone and i wonder if root is necessary in my case
as former owner of iphone, i had to jailbreak my phone since apple system is very restricted
Android is more open-minded
i dont want to brick and dont want to spend much time if anything goes wrong
ROOT is it safe? what is its purpose?
Sony has made great stock rom, light and reactive, now with the latest firmware, we got better screen calibration, black navbar...
should i switch to the root or not?
thanks you
It really depends what you want from rooting. Ask yourself, what do you want to mod? Want stock rom? See anything you like from this
Rooting is safe, not unless youre doing it wrong without reading the instructions thoroughly.
Root: granting the users access to system files.
Here is a list of terms you may find helpful.
thanks but i am willing to root my phone but what if anything goes wrong
any backup before installing MODS?

When I first rooted my Android phone I was the same, why do I want to do this? I kept asking myself. Simple answer I just wanted to explore and get more understanding off what was in my pocket.
Have you unlocked your bootloader? Can it be unlocked? There is a really good site where there are step by step instructions on how to unlock it, it uses fastboot (to my knowledge - sometime since I done one).
Don't want to spend too much time if it goes wrong -- well how longs a piece of string? It will go wrong if you haven't read the proper tutorials don't go in blind, there are backup facilities available to you just find the one thats best suited for what you're doing.
Enjoy
what should i do before rooting like backup?
is that easy to root phone?
Backing up is really for after rooting as you may try various mods or other roms. You can then back up with twrp/cm. Give rooting a go....

Old flasher getting confused

Hi all, after doing the whole thing rooting, cid changing etc on my old sensation, I now have the One. I've read all the different guides and im confused. I just want root so I can use stuff like titanium back-up but still get official OTA updates and no longer bothered about custom roms etc.
What do I really need to do please?
Have a look at the sticky threads in this subforum.
One is a video guide for unlocking bootloader and rooting. Another is FAQ, you just asked question 2.
Ok thanks I feel stupid even asking the question.
