This might be a silly question, but does anyone know if the G1 will be able to access the web if you live in an area where 3G is not available yet? I live north of Los Angeles (who has 3G) in Bakersfield and we don't have it yet. I am hoping that I was not an idiot to preorder the phone and then not be able to use all the cool web features.
Thanks in advance,
Jamie
it should still work on the EDGE network
From my understanding it will work with GPRS, Edge, and 3g so you shouldn't have any problems bro by the way I understand the concern.
With a 1150ma battery, GPS, "big" screen etc, 3G will just drain the battery even quicker.
I will not worry about 3G until an extended battery is released- and the fact that 3G will not be in my market for a year of so.

Hey guys i have a htc wing now, and it does not have a gps. It looks like the gps for this phone is one of the main highlights, because it uses it for a lot of applications. Does anyone know what the gps strength will be like? Will it work will in a building, it do i have the be in direct light for like ten minuites to get a signal?
Anyone with a htc device with a gps already, does it work well?
I hear the android is a-gps, so mabye it will have the ability to somewhat work well when in a pocket, or building.....

Time for a lesson on GPS... It uses satellites in the sky, and you need a view of a certain amount of satellites to find your location (4 will find you but not very accurately, the more the better). If you're in a building, and not right next to a window, no GPS will ever find your location, ever. That's like asking if your internet will work if the ethernet cable is unplugged from the back of your computer and you don't have wifi, it goes against the entire idea of how it functions.
Now, as for the quality of the HTC GPS receiver... People have complained about GPS lag, but I maintain my opinion that it's completely software related, my Fuze had none whatsoever. You don't need to be in sunlight, just have enough clear sky that it can get a reading from the satellites. I've taken trips with the Fuze even on very cloudy days and it took a little longer to get a lock (5-10 mins, it locks in like 30 seconds to a minute with clear skies) but once it had my position, it stayed true. All of the upcoming HTC devices use A-GPS, by the way. Diamond, Touch Pro, Xperia, G1...

He's using the battery draining as an excuse, something to keep him from pulling his hair out because he won't have 3G for another year. Anyone who's used a phone for data features on both networks knows EDGE doesn't hold a candle to 3G.
As for the original post, yes, it will give you all of the same data features on EDGE as on 3G.
The big thing with A-GPS is that it's mainly used to increase the startup speed of your GPS. Instead of waiting 10 minutes to download the almanac of the satellites in the sky from the GPS sats, it downloads the data over your data connection, using the basis of which cell site you're connected to for determining your rough location. This way it only takes about 30 seconds to get a fix instead of much longer.
The sensitivity of the GPS on phones has been fairly good as far as i've seen on devices like the Tilt and such, so I don't see why a phone with such a heavy emphasis on location-based apps would have a sub-par GPS setup. Here's hoping things work well.

Exactly... But when you're without 3G, I guess you try to justify why it's not as good, and that's what he came up with. It's like everything though, people on here try to justify why the iPhone isn't as good as the Diamond/Touch Pro, truth be told it's better in many aspects but comes short in many as well.
3g data transfer?

I choose D... all of the above
No... it will not work out of the box.
Yes/maybe... it should work someday soon unless HTC/T-Mobile have somehow disabled that ability in hardware.
As soon as I get the phone I will be working on it on the Linux side (not an actual internet sharing app... more of a route/iptables script) and I am sure someone will work on a java solution (although a kernel solution would be faster). There was an application for the iPhone that provided internet sharing but it was banned from apple store and Google has said they won't do that so I think it should be here soon.

I have an issue with my G1 WIFI connection. If i broadcast my SSID I connect with no problems. but if i disable the broadcast it will not connect, and this is with me manually putting in the connections into the phone.
I called TMobile but they said i needed to call HTC. they didn't have a solution.
BTW, I have no WEP enabled. I just disable the SSID broadcast.
I just connected to my Linksys router with WPA2 and had 3G running, connected no problem.
Haitiankid: try entering the details of your network manually and seeing if it will connect then. Also, as for the 3G fading in and out, are you in a week signal area for 3G?
wifi working
I got my wifi to work. It was my routers fault. What I did was in went into my routers settings by typing 192.168.1.1 and entered 'admin' (no quotes) and no password. Once in my settings I changed my brocasting type from b&g mixed to all mixed changed frequency to auto, changed network key from shared to open and wifi started working. I don't know if all those steps were neccesary but it worked for me. Hope it works for some else.
As for the 3g it seems to be getting better
for those of you with the 3g/edge switching problem...
Hey, if uve got the 3g switching to edge back and forth continuously, its likely because you didnt get a new SIM card when u got the g1. It simply means you have an old SIM card that doesnt support 3g well, call tmobile up tell them your situation, theyve given most people a free new SIM card thats more compatible.

I don't think that's the case. I've had the same SIM card since 2000, no problems like this. If any SIM is too old to support 3G, I'd think one made 8 years ago would definitely be the case.
It sounds like he's in a bad coverage area, which could be lots of things. There is a coverage map on the T-Mo website, don't know if it shows 3G. Or it could be the building he's in. My phones have never worked at my grandmother's house. I get full bars on the front porch, and full bars the second I get out the back door, but no signal in the house itself. Even relatives on other networks get little to no coverage inside the house. Probably the really really old insulation and building materials are blocking the signal. At my last apartment I only had a good signal on the corner of my bed, and that disappeared when new neighbors moved in upstairs.
These are radio waves, which aren't foolproof or perfect, they encounter all kinds of interference. Nothings going to be as secure and consistant as a wired connection. Nature of the beast, unfortunately.

Careful dude, with the security set to open anyone within range (neighbors, wardrivers, etc.) can use your wifi to get on the internet. Try using WPA or WPA2 security, but leaving it all mixed and frequency at auto.
I have a bit of an odd issue. Tethering with WiFi Tether Router app from the stop has been working until last week. Both LTE and 3G. Then last week I had the infamous 3G issue. I did a factory reset and when that didn't work I tried a profile update (I know probably backwards). After the profile update 3G works great. However, this week when I tried to tether things went south. It connects fine to the AP, you can do a dns lookup and it succeeds, Skype connects, torrents work great, but you can't get to any websites at all. Tethering with 3G works fine other than the fact that it's slow. I have tried on stock rooted by Capt, Bad Boyz, and CM. All of them worked last week, but none of them work this week. Fabio from the tether app suggested I look at the APN settings and make sure that default,supl,mms,dun were all set up as APN types. When I took a look in there only default and hipri were set as types. The strange thing is that it seemed to work for a little bit after initially setting that up. Now its back to not working. I can telnet to port 80 on servers that I know are web sites and I get the expected results back, so I know the router is passing port 80 traffic, it just wont allow an actual website to download. I have tried to connect a surface, Windows Phone, and a Windows laptop and all get the same results so I am fairly certain it isn't on the connecting device side.
Anyone have any thoughts or has anyone seen this?
Update ---
This morning when I went in to work I decided to give it a try again because that was the last location where it worked. It appears this issue may be location specific. In downtown San Antonio none of the tethering methods work with 4G but in the far west (SeaWorld) tethering 4G works...
Man I have the same damn problem, It's almost like Sprint is blocking certain things, we know for a fact they cap LTE, which sux cuz I like sprint they have good plans

Can you throw up a link about them capping LTE?
I haven't been able to get tether to work for me and I wonder if this is one of the reasons.
Issue: While connected to my EA6900 (1900 AC) linksys wireless modem my data dies. If I turn off wifi, I am able to call out, (although patchy), get texts, and use android services. As soon as I turn on wifi, these services all seem to shut down. Although sometimes some data is able to eak through.
Background: I am using a Moto x (2014) Pure Edition on the AT&T Network. I have confirmed time and time again that wireless works on my network, I have a full wifi signal and decent LTE signal (unsure how strong -- it shows 2-3 bars). I had this problem initially in 4.4.4 and it persists in 5.0 (I updated to see if that would fix the issue. Previously I had and HTC One with no issues what so ever. Reboots do not fix this issue and ATT has told me it is not their problem.
Hypothesis: I think the Moto X 2014 has problem connecting on the 5ghz (duel band) or AC networks. I have noticed while at work or other locations, I have had no connectivity issues with wifi on. I am pretty sure they are using standard 2.4ghz G and or N connections. I believe that the phone is unable to switch between the range of bands and causes it to lose data connectivity.
Has anyone had this issue or can anyone correct it?
I don't have an ac or 5ghz router so I can't test this. Have you played with the WiFi frequency band under advanced WiFi? You can force connect to 5ghz or 2.4ghz.
You could also turn off ac on the router configuration page to see if you can connect on n.
When I have time I will play around on my network to try and force the connection to different protocols. I have an AC router from EnGenius it's their ESR1200 which is a consumer grade device but pretty nice over all and was a steal at $60 over on Amazon:
http://www.engeniustech.com/home-networking/routers/16742-esr1200
But will try a few options. Right now I have it connected to the 5ghz band w/o issue. I can add I have long encountered issues for Android when moving between wifi networks. It has always been prone to struggling to juggle connections, even when switching nodes on a mono-SSID network. I can trace my issues back to Jelly Bean. But it seems like you are seeing something different.
If I find anything I'll post it soon as time permits, busy week for me at work or I might get lucky and just die in my sleep.
EDIT: For giggles I forced a connection to the 5ghz side and sent some texts as well as a couple calls w/o issue. Was able to receive as well. Mode is .11n of course and a solid 433mbps network connection speed
This is where my hypothesis really dies... I have attempted forcing 2.4 or 5ghz but both failed. The other option is the phone doesnt play nice with the EA6900... which is seemingly supported by the fact that my phone hasnt had any issues while i am connected to my parents house for thankgsiving. They are running 2.4ghz at a blazing 65mbps (i usually average around 400 at my house on my ea6900). Could it be the AC modem? One other thought is chromecast is somehow interfering with my phone. I will need to try removing chromecast when i get home to see if that works, but at this point, i would find it hard to imagine.
This is literally driving me up a wall.
EDIT: So I am at home at it has been running better but just now it has decided to seize up. Showing same info... 2.4ghz 65mpbs same network... full bars.... att shows 3/5 bars but doesnt say LTE or H or anything..just ATT (pretty sure thats normal)

There are a bunch of comments about it overheating and dropping signal repeatedly. I would think about returning it under warranty.

I also have Comcast. No WiFi issues with my Nexus 6, or any other devices.
Hey there... I am actually a field technician for Comcast maybe I can help. What exactly are you having for issues... can you see the network, is it the default password with default network name??? Let me know and I can do what I can to help you. Also what device do you have an XB2 or an XB3 wireless gateway?
That's weird. At my mother's I also have some issues with the WiFi at times where I just won't get a connection. I keep having to turn the WiFi on the nexus on and off. Luckily the lte coverage in the area is top notch
Just yesterday subscribed to Comcast/xfinity, logged my Nexus 6 into it, got full strength signal showing on the phone, and HUGE latency-to-zero performance. This is the first and only time I've ever seen little to no WiFi performance, yet WITH a very strong signal. I wonder if this has something to do with xfinity WiFi and that business where they share your bandwidth with other members who are nearby and wanting to use WiFi?
My wife's iPhone works fine with it...
-Peter
I have this same issue with my Nexus 6. I can connect to the WiFi fine, but web connections never seem to complete. The progress bar in chrome gets to about 10% and just sticks there. Apps attempting to download data just time out.
I am running the latest stable released build of Marshmallow.
I do not have this issue on my n6 with xfinity internet. I do not use their leased modem/router so do not share the Internet but doubt that is the issue.
However, the WiFi is not always 100% stable (notice in clash of clans when a short disconnect is a big deal). I rarely get sporadic disconnects in that game but streaming video, etc. never causes an issue. I am using the latest Pure Nexus build lately and seems to have helped (maybe placebo).
Edit: I use that n6 like an iPod touch now (WiFi only) so I'd definitely notice but it works great.

Here is how I have my home network setup:
Uverse Gateway (Wifi 2.4GHz SSID=2wireXXX, currently off) (NAT/router 192.168.1.X)(6Mbps data plan)(other Uverse TV boxes are connected via coax)
---Netgear R6250 AC (Gigabit) (as Wifi Access Point 2.4GHz SSID=tesla, 5GHz SSID=tesla5g)
------Gigabit Switch (to TV/BluRay/laptop/etc)
~~~~Wifi Devices (lots of android phones/tablets/roku/etc)
---Netgear Arlo Hub (dedicated wifi to 4 cameras)(seems these like to force themselves to same channel as router, makes no sense?)
---SmartThings Hub (Zwave 900MHz)
---AT&T MicroCell (currently off)
I am getting some dropouts in Wifi lately and looking for some help to see if I have everything configured/connected in most efficient way. 2 kids are usually on tablets playing Minecraft/NBAlive/watching Youtube cooking videos Son has been complaining about wifi a lot lately. I don't think it has been too bad, but I also notice spinning icon on ipad title bar near Wifi occasionally. I've been doing speed tests via google, when everything is quiet I get 6-8Mbps. One kid on youtube drops it ~2Gbps. Occasionally when I get that spinning icon, speed test only gets 0.5Mbps for unknown reason. Recently when this happened I jumped on cat5 connected computer and immediately got 7Mbps.... uverse seems okay.
Home is 2 story, wood, with full basement. All of this (except the switch and wifi devices) is in one cabinet at North end of my house, near main living area. Kitchen, Bedroom are on south end of house (which is about 55feet) so get poor coverage there (phone charging area and bedroom Roku have por signal). Obviously moving it all to the middle of house would cover everything better, but don't have a good spot to place everything at middle of main floor. I have a basement with drop ceiling that I could relocate some stuff too but need to pull cat5 and power there, just under first floor decking.
I had the kids tablets and older devices on 2.4GHz and only a few newer/faster/work devices on 5GHz. Moved my son to 5GHz recently, too soon to tell if it helps his issues.
-Do I have too many devices in one cabinet (as far as number of radio transceivers)? Heat doesn't seem to be problem, not sealed and doesn't feel too hot.
-Would it help to move R2650 to middle of house and turn back on the Uverse wifi? Put kids on 2.4GHz. To minimize re-wiring, I'd probably change the devices to this order: Uverse---GigabitSwitch---NetgearR6250; I think this maintains Gigabit speed inside house.
-I also have another even older Netgear 2.4GHz B(or G?) router, should I put this at other end of house all on same SSID? So I could have three 2.4GHz access points which all appear to be same network (?????). Then just have 5GHz for the important devices (my wife and I).
-What are some ways to monitor/debug this??? I'd like an app to see which devices are using most data throughput at any given moment and total per day. Tried Netgear Genie App but it is pretty limited. Is the only way to use router with custom firmware?
Thanks in advance for any advice or pointers to help!!!
