Got two virgin sgs with froyo 2.2, i9000UGJL2.
what are the steps to unlock, root, install CWM and update to latest or apply doc roms.
i read everywhere but i kept on getting errors.
it's the same as the Bell phone
by the way Virgin is Bell owned
the unlocking apps dont work and i cant find cwm for 2.2 but only for the 2.1.
I downloaded Galaxy S unlock from the market and unlocked my sim. The app allows you to rewind just in case you need to rewind for any reasons i.e. warranty etc. My phone's sim was locked on to Vodafone UK but now it accepts any sim card
When i try rooting, it says verification error.
use the superoneclick rooting app on the DEV section of the forum
okay.worked on 6th attempt.mod can delete this thread.thanks.

I have a question...I have flashed Optus froyo by patching the Kies...Does it lock my phone to Optus...Mine is unlocked phone but I am confused on this point after flashing to Optus firmware...I haven't got a chance to test with other SIM...I was on ZSJF5 eclairs
nope. It only installs optus branding, links and apps which can be removed via titanium backup with root. Optus Galaxies have never been sim locked. As far as I know only prepaid phones in AU are locked by law or something like that.
Thanks a zillion...
Hi there,
I bought a Rogers Captivate to use on Fido. The first thing I did (before putting my SIM card in) was root the device using SuperOneClick. This worked fine. Then I put my Fido SIM card in and booted the phone up. I was able to make calls when I expected to be prompted for an unlock code. I had attempted to run the "unlock" command from SuperOneClick, but it told me the process failed. Is this normal behavior?
Thanks!
FK
Rogers and Fido are the same company.
The phones are usable between the two networks without an unlock code.
Its when you go to bell, telus etc that you need to unlock.
Super one click will not work to unlock our Canadian phones, so your phone is still locked.
Hello everyone
Ive just bought a pre-owned SGS with 2.2 froyo, however its locked to the T-Mobile UK network. I am on Virgin UK, I entered my APN manually and my SIM Card works fine in it, but I cant find a "software Update" in Settings on Phone.
I bought it for Gingerbread, so I downloaded Kies but it says Its the latest Firmware and I only have 48 hrs to change my mind and return it and Unlocking it would invalidate the warranty.
So will unlocking it, get me 2.3 or should i return it.
This T Mobile Boxed version cost me £220 (unwanted contract upgrade, so its BNIB, for the sim free its £275.. quite a difference. Im not very good at modding either.
Any Advice
Thanks

If you don't want to flash manually with Odin you should return the locked Galaxy and look for an unlocked one or even for a Galaxy S2...
If you flash with Odin you can have Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3 or 2.3.4).

Check out market for free unlocking Apps. I have seen them and looks as though the unlock codes are stored in some system file that the app apparently reads. I cannot vouch that they work as my sgs was supplied from vodafone unlocked. But worth a try as they are free. What's the worse that could happen?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Will unlocking SGS allow me Gingerbread
Yes defo, thats what I had to do.
Hi guys,
I am from Australia. About couple of months ago I upgraded my SGS from stock froyo (network provided) to 2.3.4 JVR gingerbread via samfirmware but I did not unlock my phone prior to doing that as I was told it doesn't matter. Now when I am trying to unlock it, it doesn't work. It says network unlock unsuccessful. I am leaving for overseas in a week and if my phone doesn't unlock then I can't use it. I am kinda freaking out. My phone is not rooted.
Pls help!!!
Dont use the app only the.pro.app unlocks your phone try to hex edit nv_data.bin there is a great.guide.how to do that in the development forums
ps: you have to be rooted to.do.it but.if you reinstall to stock the unlock remains.if you dont touch.efs folder
If im wrong sorry i.did it this.way.and.my.phone is still unlocked
I always used Android "Google phones", so I'm not very used to the situation I am about to ask.
A friend of mine has asked me to update his branded locked Vodafone Galaxy S to 2.3.6 (for some reason Kies is not updating, maybe the carrier didn't released the update?
So, when I googled about it, in order to use Odin for a "manual" update, ok, I found a lot of tutorials, but they always refer that is required a network unlocked phone.
Anyway, is there a way to update it in this locked phone?
There are some unlocking tools in the development section, or even on the Market (Galaxy S Unlock).

I've used Galaxy_S Unlock app, available in the play store!
It worked for the vodafone branded Galaxy S international! (i9000)
