Accuracy: 15 meters (I'd seen it down to 10 meters)
This is my THIRD Captivate. Just keep sending yours back until you get one like this.
im in L.A.15-30secs to fix and lock on, i see about 9 birds, 6 in use typically & accirate to about 30m tho i have seen it as accurate as ~5m sometimes. running on firefly and whatever they use for GPS improvements. but thats on a good clear day. if its cloudy i forget about it and switch to a standalone GPS unit
One was that good stock the other I got in a trade and it had perception on it.

Ten meters in about 10-15 seconds. I'm running continuum v4. Check the Continuum op in development for which gps fix Cezar used. I also went into lbstestmode and reset some settings recommended by the Plumbbob gps fix, but I did not run the plumbob program. I just used the settings.
I can usually gave a5 meter lock in about 30-45 seconds.

Over on the galaxy s forum (under galaxy s development forum) someone has taken the gps files from the epic and put them on his galaxy s. He is now seeing great results with his GPS.
Can somebody please do this for the Vibrant and report the results?
(The thread has the link to the files on the androidcentral forums, sorry I don't have link privileges yet)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759976
did this on my vibrant and have already posted the (positive) results in the original thread.
Kind of mixed results over there.
I installed this, and have noticed an improvement. I went from ussually 40 to 50 feet accuracy, to about 20, and it seems to be locking more quickly...

Haven't seen an answer from anyone in that thread yet... anyone with a Vibrant who has done this notice in GPS Test if this corrected the time the GPS uses being off?
Very mixed results. As usual for the gps fix threads.

I applied the epic fix and I now get in use of 3 to 4 sats in less then a minute with an accuracy of less then 30 ft.
The time is still off by 5 hours.

Odd isn't it? I just don't get it honestly.. I get 4 sats in use with sub 20 ft accuracy almost always.. My wife's Vibrant shows 7 to 9 sats in use same sub 20ft accuracy in the exact same spot heh.

The time isn't off. The GPS Test program is written by a company based in the UK. Look up the current time in the UK and I bet that is what time you are seeing. I'm pretty certain the developer has hard coded the GMT offset into the app itself which is GMT+1 for London.
I flashed it, and while it shows my location very quickly, I am still not seeing the GPS locking in GPS status app.
It shows 11 visible but 0 locked. All in all still not a strength of the device.

I think that's more of a bug in whatever generates the nmea output. It has shown me 20ft locks with one sat in use, which is impossible of course. It would be nice if they would fix it, but at least it gets a fix faster now.
For the time, it's not a bug in gps test. On my g1, it shows the time properly, that's a samsung bug.
I tried flashing epic gps files via CWMR and I ended up with no GPS at all, once rebooted again, the stock GPS got there back, I checked the files that were supposed to be there were not. I have my input in the OP in Samsung Galaxy S development forum. Weird to say the least. I hope the fix comes here quicker than what Samsung vague September ETA.

indeed, or hoepfully samsung is referring to something like early september rather than mid/late.
No improvement for me, on Vibrant6. Getting 2 locks out of 10 seen in my backyard, same as before.

I have seriously wondered why this is,....even thought about making a post about it, but
In every rom I have ran so far I have never had an issue. I have consistently gotten 8-12 satellites and the first 8 lock within seconds. Since I got my new car mount I have been running the "GPS Test" application and just let it go while I drive. I even went as far as to get the Track Me app and traced my drive to and from work.
I only seem to see complaints about GPS but I have had nothing but a great experience. The worst performance I have had is with the "Cog 2.2 Beta1" and I still do not feel it was sub par performance.
I know this is the opposite of what you asked but I thought it might be informative. Could this be a sign that the problem is hardware and not software?
Just saw on twitter Sammy just released an app to the market for a "gps fix". The name of it is in the subject line. Im afraid to try it being that with the jk3 modem, my gps has been finally working...

Dude.....Really? Half a block? That's not accurate man that's about as bad as everyone else's captivate . I'm sorry to be rude but I'm sick of people saying "its perfect" " it locks in half a second to 82 sats with 2 inch accuracy" . Post some proof of your awesome gps then do us a favor and share how you made it work because I'm pretty sure Samsung screwed them all up. Sorry for the rant.........
(I would bet that your "lock" INDOORS would be celltower triangulation and that no birds were actually locked as this is were many people assume there gps works when it in reality suck like everyone else's)
Sent from my Captivate that can't figure out were the hell it is in the world......
I'm really starting to think that the problem is in the antennas. I've never had a problem getting a lock pretty fast, yes lock, not agps approximate. However, it's getting it to keep a lock that is the problem. I always had the dreaded blue circle, or out right gps signal lost. However, for about 3 days straight it has been sunny. And for the first time I tried putting the phone up near the console, back outward and not downward, and it has been perfect. No circle, no lag, no problems. I never had to do this with my other phones. Hell, my WinMo device that I frequently use as bluetooth gps receiver works fine in the passenger seat, or floorboard for that matter. It just seems as if it has to be perfect conditions for the phone get decent gps reception, which to me seems like antenna problems.

update.zip to replace /system/lib/hw/gps.inc.so with the file found in the Incredible_C_GB_S_VERIZON_WWE_4.01.605.0 leak that rmk40 posted/updated from 911Sniper's.
I really can't take any credit at all for any of this. I just saw what the Evo guys did, tweaked a line in the updater script, switched their gps file for ours, and then signed it with Signapktic.
If you want to thank someone, please thank galandy and daryelv.
Runkeeper has been having problems for me, so I'm seeing if this helps. i've flashed this and made sure I still got a GPS lock (CM7 Nightly 134), but I haven't had a chance to try it with Runkeeper.... hopefully this isn't an epic fail. One image shows what it looks like good, and one what it has been doing lately.
If you aren't having a problem, I wouldn't flash it, and remember the nandroid!

Hey so do you think you can elaborate on what exactly this does?
On first glance it looks like it is having the GPS refresh much more rapidly (therefore consuming more battery life I'm guessing).
Is this the only thing this mod does?
Yes, how is the battery life with this?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
I can't comment on battery life at this point. I'm going to use GPS on Monday evening and will report back. I expect it may drain the battery more while using GPS, but for me, the trade off of more polling is worth it.
The update.zip simply replaces the CM7 GPS driver with the driver found in the Gingerbread leak. I can't speak to the changes in the HTC driver, because I've not seen the code (probably wouldn't do much good for me to see it anyway), and the source is not released.
If you are not having a problem, I wouldn't flash it.
I'm curious how this turns out, since I've noticed the same thing with RunKeeper lately. I don't think it has a negative effect on my total mileage, but every once in a while the accuracy goes completely wonky and it can't give me an accurate reading of my pace at the moment.
I had my days mixed up, today isn't a run day.
I wanted to get some initial results though, so I did do a quick run. GPS seems to have a higher polling/refresh/whatever it's called rate. The only thing I did was flash this update.zip.
Tomorrow I go for a 40 minute run so I'll have a better idea on how it hits the battery. I just went 5 minutes today, so it didn't really do anything.
So far, seems to be good. No more corners being cut off!
I'll have to keep my eye on this, when I was running sense roms maps was able to be able to track me with pinpoint accuracy, with cm7 it seems off by a few yards. Not a lot but enough to say im in my backyard when i'm in my bedroom or my neighbors front yard when i'm in my kitchen. If I can get that lock I got in sense with cm7 i'll be a happy camper.
Curious as well
I have noticed issues with GPS being off 5-10 yards as well. I ad recently flashed back to 7.28 radio which seemed to help initially or so I thought. I noticed it off about 10 yards on golf apps.
Looking forward to how this turns out

Yup, sounds like it
Just got done with a 35 minute run, GPS is working much better for me. I have an 8 month old 1500mAh TP2 battery. It dropped 6% in 35 minutes (screen off the whole time, just using runkeeper), which does not appear to be better or worse on the battery to me than the stock CM7 GPS driver.
If you are flashing this driver, you will have to re-flash it after flashing CM7.
I haven't tested accuracy, I can only say that it has increased the blue dots on my run keeper map which is what I wanted.
Thanks for looking into this. I've noticed that my tracks has been working poorly lately for me. Sometimes it even skips parts of my course altogether. Some of this may be due to the terrain (I use it for MTB ) but I never noticed it when I was using the stock rom. Ill try it out and report back if anything gets better.

Yeah, this helped me. Maps is smoother, and MyTracks is insanely smooth! No noticeable difference in battery use either.
Just got finished with my evening ride and it seems my tracks is working perfectly as far as smooth maps. I did notice something odd however, my tracks reported almost one mile more than the odometer on my bike computer! The first two miles were right on and then it seems something went wrong. Ill have to try it with a known distance and see which one is the culprit.

Ok, I've tried it a couple more times and I'm confident the error was in the bike computer. I may have bumped the magnet attached to the wheel at some point and that's what threw off the readings. Everything looks good now, thanks for this!

NOTE: we all know the GPS sucks. this isnt about that. its a question of have we been making it worse~
I was just driving my forklift and had a thought, please excuse me not adding to another post as I am doing this through tapatalk.
you know how to gps uses wifi networks to help position? Do you think custom (longer) wifi scan interval is interfering?
Some roms are 2 minutes between scans.
Interesting thought... So what is the shortest interval that can be set and I imagine that would affect the battery usage of course ?

I am unable to test until later tonight but if someone else wants to try today you can edit your build.prop info using root explorer. is in the system folder, look 4 wifi scan interval and change the number to a lower value, then reboot your phone and see if the g p s locks on any quicker

default from most carriers is around 15 seconds, custom roms can be anywhere up to 2 minutes or more
Hi TRusselo - I was looking at my build.prop. The only line I have is RO.wifi channels=. I am running Serenidpity 6.4. I would really like to slow the scanning down because when you watch it it's scanning like a mad fool.
Thanks

then look up on xda build.prop tweaks. and add whatever tweaks you want using any text editor on your phone. sorry I am answering with my phone at the moment and don't want to give you typos
I just tried to edit the build dot prop with root explorer's built in editor, it would only let me replace 2 numbers with 1, (acting weird) so I copied to my pc edited and then copied back to the phone.

so gps has been better while in town, quick locking while standing still, takes a bit to initially lock if moving at high speed but is expected.
i have been using a setting of 15 seconds, trying 25 seconds next.
You might wanna clarify that this does not apply to the ppl who cry about the phone being a crappy "stand alone" GPS. Else someone is gonna bring it up and de-rail the topic.
But it does bring attention to an ignored factor when using network location. So now ppl will have to consider the trade-off...
I'd figure much more then 30 sec will become problematic, and cause missed turns in dense urban areas.
