[Q] Where to copy the images/videos/songs to NC with Honeycomb - Nook Color General

Hi,
I've installed my Nook Color with Honeycomb (HC v4 eMMC 2nd).
I've copied few images and videos into the NC (by mounting the 'media' using Nook Color USB Mass Storage utility). But in the gallery nothing is shown and I tried the same with SD card too. In fact I've faced the same problem with Nookie Froyo too.
I came to conclusion that I m copying the files to wrong place (unlike my N900 which reads from any place )
Some one, please help.
Thanks.
ManiKanta

Try another way install "file expert" from market, run the application and enable "ftp sharing" and so you can easily connect PC to nook and transfer your files.

Thanks. But can you please tell me where to copy the image/video files? I mean is there any special place where NC Honeycomb looks for media files?

Quite new to the whole thing myself, images belongs to DCIM folder to show up in gallery and I believe for video/mp3 it does'nt matter which folder you choose.

Thanks. In fact I've copied a movie into the media directory. But no luck Any other thoughts...

Fellas,
Am I only one having this problem ? At least confirmation from people for whom it is working fine with Images (I need to try with DCIM), Videos and Songs would be highly appreciated

What are you using to copy the files? Have you check with astro that the files are actually copied? if you are using ums, unmount the drive from the PC beforce choosing unmount on ums.

I don't think the HC rom can see anything written in the folders on EMMC. You can't even navigate to it with Root Explorer because I don't think it's even mounted.
I've switched back and forth between CM7 and HC, and while running CM7 I moved some music from my sdcard to the Music folder in EMMC. When I loaded up HC all of the music disappeared, and only my photos on the sdcard were viewable. Once I flashed back to CM7 all of the music was back.
It was also a test for me to see if the entire internal memory of the nook is wiped using the options in CWR, and apparently all of the files stay intact.

I am having these issues as well. I put a picture in every DCIM folder on the nook. I put it on my micro sd card, and nook media drive. I have unmounted and mounted several times. I have tried music with a folder named music on the root of my sd card and in the nook media drive. I can see it if I go to it in root explorer, and actually play it from there, but nothing will show in my gallery or music player. Any help is greatly appreciated.
ROM - nookie comb

Thanks you all for your inputs.
Initially I've tried with CM7 only. Might be I've some thing wrong... I'll try with it again..
If the issue is originally present with HC rom, though disappointed, but still okay with it as I can be sure that i m not missing something

Hint
After long gap I think I see the problem now. When I copied images to NC (mounted using UMC app and ejected from system and then unmounted in UMC), the media scanner seems not seeing the updates or it is sleeping. If I restart the NC, then images were shown in the Gallery app.
Is there any setting or tip to make the scanner look for the update?
Will Nook version of Cyanogenmod or any Android 2.3 firmware release does the task well?

Android by Default rescans for Media at every Boot. If you want there are Apps to Manually scan.
Search the Market for "Rescan Media ROOT" it will Manually force Scan you're device and can disable scan on boot if you want to speed up boot.
Also I recommend getting "StudioKUMA" as it allows you to easily Blacklist folders which you don't want scanned.

Thanks. Does it mean when ever we copy some new media (be it images/songs/videos), we manually need to initiate the scanning. (asking again because my Nokia N900 will show the new stuff without a glitch immediately I eject from System)

Only if you want it to recognize new stuff imediately. It'll scan for new stuff eventually but sometimes it can take awhile.

SD Card -> DCIM for pictures. I use Astro File Manager to view them without issue. Will try tonight to see if I can see them in the gallery.

sdcard issues with kangslayer

I am having issues with dd2.7 recognizing my pictures or music files.
root explorer will see them and play them.
it seems that whenever the os is looking for the files they are not in the right place.
it worked fin with the old dc2.08
it works fine with rc0 froyo
i have installed dd2.7/GS/uv then repartitioned the sd put the music files in /sdcard/media/music and it saw them and played them.....until i rebooted then it was back to not seeing them at all.
in fact I cant push any pictures to the sdcard and have them show up in the gallery they do show up if i take the picture with the camera.
i cant get any custom wallpapers to show up either
Do a full wipe, and reflash, but remember to nandroid
i am not a noob....
so yes i have done a full wipe.
i have reformatted my sdcard
i have tried without the GS installed.
logcat shows nothing
Don't know about pics, but I know with froyo I had a music problem. And went through every file with mp3 tagger and made sure there was id tag info for both 1 & 2. Pain in the ass, but it worked

Files on ext. SD Card deleted by Media Scanner

Hi folks,
the Android Media Scanner is deleting files stored on my ext. SDCard.
First I thought the card is broken but then I found this:

Is anyone else having this issue and/or got a solution for it?
Thanks!

Probably own fault. Might be cause by mounting ExternalSD wrong way.

Gonzales,
I updated from Android 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 this weekend, and the problem started. I came across both threads at the Android Developers forum, and found no solution.
You do mention above that it was "probably your own fault... see updated thread". Well, I did read the updated threads, and found no solution.
You hint that it has to do with the way the card is mounted/unmounted. And this weekend I did in fact mount/unmount the card various times, connecting it to the PC.
But what exactly did you do? Did you find a solution?
Thanks,
[SOLVED] Media Scanner Deleting Files from SD Card
OK, I believe I found the solution. Apparently the problem can be caused by the SD card being mounted and/or unmounted properly. In my case, I was connecting/disconnecting to/from the desktop PC, having the SD card as Mass Storage. At one point, Android wasn't detecting it anymore so I removed and inserted it a few times.
I did what I describe on the same thread at Android Developers: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3692#c117
Here's what I wrote there:
So I did the following, and it seemed to solve.
1. Connected phone via USB to desktop PC, and dismounted card from phone, allowing data transfer to PC (via Mass Storage Device)
2. In Windows, as a test I created various folders with subfolders, with image files in them. On some I placed a .nomedia file in root and sub-folder, other only in root, others I renamed the sub-folder to start with a ".", etc. (NOTICE: I copied existing .nomedia files from other folders, as Windows doesn't allow files/folders starting with "." to be created)
3. In Windows, I ejected the USB drive politely (i.e.: I didn't just pull the cable out)
4. On phone, opened Settings/Applications/All and found Media Storage
5. Deleted data from Media Storage
6. On phone, I disabled the external access (file storage)
7. Waited patiently until SD card was detected and mounted (previously, I tried forcing that to happen by opening applications that would query the SD card)
The phone performed the Media Scan a couple of times, and ALL MEDIA FILES REMAINED THERE, where they would originally have been deleted from.
In all test folders I created from within Windows, no files were deleted. And in folders that originally had media files (which I didn't touch through Windows), the files no longer were deleted.
Anyway, this seems to have fixed it for me.
My system:
Samsung Galaxy Ace, Android 2.3.6, rooted.
An extra hint: if you feel you card access is slow, get an app like SD Booster and increase the cache size. On my device, it was as low as < 100Kb but increasing it to 1024Kb made a huge difference.
And if you don't want the media scanner to run on boot (increase boot speed), use Rescan Media Root.
Both need root access, by the way.

And I've had no problems at all ever since, and even mounted/unmounted a couple of times.

[Q] Whatsapp Media storage location, SDCard0 instead of extSDCard

Hi,
I have a question regarding media storage location of Whatsapp - I don't necessarily expect a solution but would like to at least verify the behaviour on other phones.
My old android device (Sony Ericsson SK17i) saved the Whatsapp media files to the external SDCard.
I bought a S3 mini this week and noticed a difference: Whatsapp media files are not stored on external SDCard anymore, but on the internal storage. I guess that this comes from the internal storage being presented as SDCard0, so maybe Whatsapp thinks that this is in fact the external SD-Card.
Can somebody with S3 mini check how this behaves with his phone? Within Whatsapp I didn't find a way to configure this, can anyone think of a solution to that?
Many thanks in advance.

mine saved on phone internal too....and i'am afraid there's no setting from within whatsapp to store in external sd card....however you can reduce space by using directory bind....search around and you will find it.....directory bind or link2sd should do it....

ok, thanks for double-checking, I was afraid so. I don't want to link the whole app to sd card, but directory bind sounds like a very good idea, I haven't thought of that.

How do you managed to make the default Image preview program to work properly?
I marked the "Media verification" checkbox on the folder mount configuration so that de SD Card folder wouldn't appear on the image preview program, but now I only can see some black thumbs with no image "attached" that points to internal memory.
Did any of this happened to you? Or something similar with the images or how you see them?
in my S4
whenever i open this app , notifications comes saying :
checking for root ......
exit
and nothing happens !

This seems like a solution to my problem- moved my whatsapp media folder using the manual settings in Gl to SD, but it seems wonky. I took a picture of myself and sent it to someone, and it worked fine. Image is stored in my "sent" folder on the card, which also shows up in internal if I browse there with an explorer. I click on the image in whatsapp, it becomes full screen.
But when someone sends ME an image, it seems to never download. I see the thumbnail, I click it, and then it says that the media is not found on the SD card.
Sure enough, I browsed the folder in explorer (hooked up to my computer as PTP, browsing in windows 7) and the file isn't there. Only the one that I originated. I tried to create a file there, and it actually timed out on me and said device wasn't available. So it seems to sometimes work but not other times? How strange!

it seems you have root permission problem. you may try to fix permission via custom recovery. GL to SD is working fine and i'm able to download additional data on ext SD.

Ah, that might have been it.
In the mean time I gave up, removed it and went with foldermount, linked above. Works just fine out the door, cleaner UI too.
Move WhatsApp Media To External SD Card
This App automatically redirects WhatsApp media to the External SD Card in order to save memory: I cannot post the link, but you can search Nicola Rosada On Play Store and download Photo & File Redirect.

I got foldermount and used it to mount data/obb folders from some apps to my ext SD card. But this is what i get for whatsapp: The data and obb options are greyed out so i cant select them and it says there is no data to begin with (0 B). How did you do it? Thanks
Thanks for saving me to ask this question. My son has a SG Grand Prime SM-G530H and is facing the same problem.

Device creating weird files on SD Card

Hello!
For a few days now I've noticed that my device has been creating some weird files on my SD card. I have tried formatting the SD a few times but it still happens. If I do not delete these files more and more keep being created until there are hundreds of them in my SD. They seem to not take up any space at all, but it bothers me having to browse for files in the card. I have attached a screenshot from the root of my SD card with the suspicious files highlighted. If they are completely normal for an android device, I would like to know if there is a way to stop them, hide them or maybe have them appear inside a separate folder so I can keep my card organized.
Also, it may or may not be related, but whenever I'm listening to music (whether it'd be Play Music or another app) sometimes the phone stops playing it, as if I closed the app. I had Clean Master installed and it happened frequently until I figured out it was the source of the problem and uninstalled. It worked fine for a while but it started again. I believe it could be related, since I keep all of my music on the SD card.
Thank you in advance for any assistance provided!
Do you see these files only when phone is plugged to PC via USB or can you see them with ES-Explorer or similar Filemanger on the phone also?
I have a few of these files but they are only present when I check the SDcard on a Windows- PC, in ES or Rootexplorer they aren´t visible. So my opinion is that these files are created temporary for connecting.

The files also appear with file managing apps on the device as well. As you can see, the files have "reproduced" since I started this thread.

Oreo & SD Cards

There appears to be a problem moving files about on the SD Card when running under Oreo. It seems you can write to the card from say the camera or from the phone storage but moving or copying a file from the SD Card to another location on the SD Card doesn't work.
My mate with a different branded phone has the same issue so its not the Nokia 8, it is Oreo, anyone know of a fix?
Same issue here. Nokia TA-1004 updated to Oreo. SD Card has issues. Any files you copy to the SD card will have the file written physically, but with a read error on the destination file. The file will appear as zero bytes. But a simple restart will fix this.
Hope Nokia will fix this soon...
Edit: a restart will fix the files appearing correctly, but the issue still remains.

I can confirm this issue as well.
Tried total Commander and solid Explorer with same result - zero byte file
BTW factory reset does nothing as I have done it straight after updating to oreo (from recovery menu)
So, there's a way.
Use the default file manager, Files app. Copying and moving works well, from Internal to External memory and within also. I found the Files app rather basic, but it does work.
No zero bytes issue.
Just clear Files' app data and cache.
Works for me.
For 3rd party apps, we should wait for an update for the apps itself. I reinstalled File Manager + and X-plore, the issue is still present for these apps.
Maybe other file managers might work.

I didn't know that the Nokia 8 comes equipped with a file manager app, is it made by Google? Can I find it on the play store please?
Yes, Nokia has its own file manager. No, its not made by Google and its not available in Playstore either.
Its called "Files" app, v8.0, because its Oreo maybe.
If you're using a 3rd party launcher, maybe it won't appear in your app list. Use the default launcher.
Or go to Settings -> Storage -> Internal Storage -> Files.
If you have an SD card, tap on the SD card in the storage settings to open the Files app.
Its integrated in the OS, can't be disabled, and I also can't find a way to extract its apk.
Hope you find it...

Remove and try reading the memory card on a computer, see if your files are there.
Clean data and cache for the Files app, and try again.
Can you try with another card for a chance.
Am using a Maxell class10 16gb card.
I hope this issue isn't related to card speeds or capacity.
I didn't try other cards though.
And other file managers still has the issue.

It doesn't matter if the files are lost it was just to see if the default file explorer works correctly and it doesn't.
I am using a 64GB SanDisk Extreme Pro with 95MB/ reads and 90MB/s writes, i'd say that is a card that is up to the job. That said i don't think this is a anything to do with the cards people are using, i'd hazard a guess at Google changing how Android handles the files on an SD card in Oreo.
Well, seems we have to use the internal storage till Google makes this right...
Or the app makers work it out
At least X-plore works all right, Total Commander does have the problem as described.
No one seems to be updating any apps, i am wondering if Google borked it totally.
Well Google wouldn't care since they don't use SD cards on their devices. For me none of the 3rd party file managers work. Either we wait for Nokia to fix it or the app developers.
Also i discovered something else which is with the camera... If i choose to save the pictures on the SD when taking pictures, and press to see the photo from inside the camera app after i taken it, it wont open it.
It shows it as a small thumbnail that the photo was taken. Even if i go to the Photos to find the picture is not there. This only occurs when using the Nokia camera app and having selected to save on SD.
If i use a different camera app like the Google camera, or select from the Nokia camera app to save on the internal storage i don't have this issue.
I don't if that matters but im using a Samsung EVO Plus 64GB microSD

Never crossed my mind to clear the cache, did and works now.
The weird thing is, that i talked to the support about this and they told me that the camera app doesn't have permissions to manage the SD storage so it won't work
SD card problems seem to be fixed in today's update
