[Q] Putting music on internal memory? - Nook Color General

I'm running Nookie Comb and i was wondering how can i get my music apps to play music that i put on my internal memory? By internal memory i mean the /media folder that has 5 gigs on it because i have music on their but no apps will play the songs.

Get the MortPlayer app and a Terminal Emulator app. Now type the following in terminal:
Code:
su
mkdir /sdcard/emmc
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 /sdcard/emmc
Now go into MortPlayer's Settings and Set the default Folder to the Music folder that'll now be in /sdcard/emmc or /mnt/sdcard/emmc.
(NOTE: I'm assuming your running Nookie Honeycomb from MicroSD. If running from Internal EMMC let me know)

Thanks for this tip, I'm trying mortplayer now. One issue I've had with Android in general (nook color is my first ever Android device) is that music is hard to get working for me... I add mp3s to the music folder on my sdcard, and sometimes they show up in the music app and sometimes they don't.
Does mortplayer rescan folder contents automatically each time I use it, to update my music contents? I'll test this myself but just thought I'd ask in case anyone else has had this problem and knows a simple fix. Thanks!

Are you putting the music near root under a folder titled music or are you throwing it under the my files folder? Typically the stock froyo music player will only look for music 1 folder deep and will not take the long scan to search through sub folders. The nook colors stock music app will check in the my files folder because its written to do so. Since its the only android device to have a my files folder obviously its app will be the only one to early recognize it

I'm running CM7, but I do have music stored on EMMC too. Zimly is the only player that seems to pick them up just fine and play them without any user interaction.

I use meridian to play music. It let you choose the path you want to play your music from (in the settings menu)
Navigate to the Media folder on the emmc. This is the simplest approach.

[Q] Where to copy the images/videos/songs to NC with Honeycomb

Hi,
I've installed my Nook Color with Honeycomb (HC v4 eMMC 2nd).
I've copied few images and videos into the NC (by mounting the 'media' using Nook Color USB Mass Storage utility). But in the gallery nothing is shown and I tried the same with SD card too. In fact I've faced the same problem with Nookie Froyo too.
I came to conclusion that I m copying the files to wrong place (unlike my N900 which reads from any place )
Some one, please help.
Thanks.
ManiKanta
Try another way install "file expert" from market, run the application and enable "ftp sharing" and so you can easily connect PC to nook and transfer your files.
Thanks. But can you please tell me where to copy the image/video files? I mean is there any special place where NC Honeycomb looks for media files?
Quite new to the whole thing myself, images belongs to DCIM folder to show up in gallery and I believe for video/mp3 it does'nt matter which folder you choose.

Thanks. In fact I've copied a movie into the media directory. But no luck Any other thoughts...
Fellas,
Am I only one having this problem ? At least confirmation from people for whom it is working fine with Images (I need to try with DCIM), Videos and Songs would be highly appreciated
What are you using to copy the files? Have you check with astro that the files are actually copied? if you are using ums, unmount the drive from the PC beforce choosing unmount on ums.

I don't think the HC rom can see anything written in the folders on EMMC. You can't even navigate to it with Root Explorer because I don't think it's even mounted.
I've switched back and forth between CM7 and HC, and while running CM7 I moved some music from my sdcard to the Music folder in EMMC. When I loaded up HC all of the music disappeared, and only my photos on the sdcard were viewable. Once I flashed back to CM7 all of the music was back.
It was also a test for me to see if the entire internal memory of the nook is wiped using the options in CWR, and apparently all of the files stay intact.
I am having these issues as well. I put a picture in every DCIM folder on the nook. I put it on my micro sd card, and nook media drive. I have unmounted and mounted several times. I have tried music with a folder named music on the root of my sd card and in the nook media drive. I can see it if I go to it in root explorer, and actually play it from there, but nothing will show in my gallery or music player. Any help is greatly appreciated.
ROM - nookie comb
Thanks you all for your inputs.
Initially I've tried with CM7 only. Might be I've some thing wrong... I'll try with it again..
If the issue is originally present with HC rom, though disappointed, but still okay with it as I can be sure that i m not missing something

Hint
After long gap I think I see the problem now. When I copied images to NC (mounted using UMC app and ejected from system and then unmounted in UMC), the media scanner seems not seeing the updates or it is sleeping. If I restart the NC, then images were shown in the Gallery app.
Is there any setting or tip to make the scanner look for the update?
Will Nook version of Cyanogenmod or any Android 2.3 firmware release does the task well?

Android by Default rescans for Media at every Boot. If you want there are Apps to Manually scan.
Search the Market for "Rescan Media ROOT" it will Manually force Scan you're device and can disable scan on boot if you want to speed up boot.
Also I recommend getting "StudioKUMA" as it allows you to easily Blacklist folders which you don't want scanned.

Thanks. Does it mean when ever we copy some new media (be it images/songs/videos), we manually need to initiate the scanning. (asking again because my Nokia N900 will show the new stuff without a glitch immediately I eject from System)

Only if you want it to recognize new stuff imediately. It'll scan for new stuff eventually but sometimes it can take awhile.

SD Card -> DCIM for pictures. I use Astro File Manager to view them without issue. Will try tonight to see if I can see them in the gallery.

[Q]Internal Memory

Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer install data from apps on the sd-card to the internal phone memory? example would be i want to put install data for GTA 3 on the internal memory not on the sd-card or the sd-card ext.
Also does any other bionic users have issues with the tree textures being green squares in GTA3 on the bionic? i have re-installed a few times and it keeps having the issue. reviews on play market say it runs great on the bionic.
I'm not familiar with GTA 3 app, but I am assuming that you are seeing files or app related content on /sdcard/. The app itself or apk file should actually live elsewhere like /data/app and /data/data/... It may be possible to move the app related content to a new location and create a symbolic link in its place...
Example:
you have /sdcard/.GTA_CONTENT
you mkdir /data/newfolder
you mv /sdcard/.GTA_CONTENT /data/newfolder/.GTA_CONTENT
you ln -s /data/newfolder/.GTA_CONTENT /sdcard/.GTA_CONTENT
Keep in mind file permissions may need to be adjusted for the newfolder and the symlink file.
Also if you are concerned about performance due to app data being saved on /sdcard you don't have to worry, On the Bionic it is technically part of the internal Nand memory and not a physical sd card device like /sdcard-ext.

move apps to external stoarge

I am the lucky owner of a new RAZR-i and have practically no real complaints (yet). However, I would like to move certain apps (some games use up huge amounts of storage: Asphalt Heat 7) to my sdcard (labeled "external1" on my razr-i).
That does not seem to be possible. In settings it offers to move stuff to the external card, but only movies etc, not apps. when I go to apps and select the game, it also does not offer any option and finally "App2SD" could not move it either.
There must be a way....Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hey.... I'm on the same situation... That's my only problem with RAZR i
Is there really no way to transfer apps to SD?
Tks.
hacks should work...
I haven't tried anything like this yet (only just got my RAZR i) but I did a similar thing on a LG C660.
The hack I used was to move /data/app onto the SD card and symlink it back. So the phone could find everything under /data/app but the actual .apks were on the SD card (useful because the internal storage was tiny).
I used an app called Simple2Ext to enable this hack but it was probably designed for older devices and may not handle the different paths used on the RAZR i. It also installed startup scripts (that ensured the SD card was mounted early during the boot so the symlinks were valid when they were first accessed) that are most likely not compatible.
If you want to move only some apps, move /data/app/<app>.apk to the SD card and symlink it back into /data/app. You'll need to manually clean up the .apk on the SD card if you remove the app.
With both of these, you can't boot the phone without the SD card or remove the SD card at any time while the phone is running.
An example of the commands you might use (entered into an ADB shell or terminal):
move all apps to SD card
Code:
$ su
# mv /data/app /external1
# ln -s /external1/app /data
move angry birds to SD card
Code:
$ su
# mkdir /external1/app
# mv /data/app/com.rovio.angrybirds-1.apk /external1/app
# ln -s /external1/app/com.rovio.angrybirds-1.apk /data/app
If you don't understand the above... please don't do this. It's dangerous and you could break your phone.
You can use directory bind for that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
Need to use the alternate DB (check the settings of the apps), but it works great to "move" folder from the sdcard to external.
This is the only workaround we have until a custom rom let us use external as SDcard.

I'm using DirectoryBind with my Razr i and works almost perfect, I can't make a Data base backup so if I turn off the Phone I lose all the bind directories and I have to do it again, so I'm not turning off the phone never ever. The rest works perfect and very fast.
good luck!

You could use init.d scripts to do it automatically at boot.
But first you need to enable init.d (check here)

Not really sure why you need to..... do you have 5Gb of apps????
Reason I ask is I have all my music on sd card, camera can be set to store directly to Sd card and if you've forgpt to do that when you fill phone like I did with a video the other day it asks if you want to transfer all videos and photos to SD card... Problem solved no messing about looking in options
Yes I do have more than 5GB of apps + sd data. and for me the problem is that the application is gonna try to store the data in the Sd card, and our main partition is called sdcard and external1 the sdcard so... all the data of the apps like need for speed, whatsapp, N.O.V.A ... is going to be stored in your internal memory because of that my phone memory was full in 48 hours.

-Open Directory Bind
-Go to menu click Add new entry
-Enter in (data) path where you are gonna place the data en your external sd " /external1/ " where you want save it, the directory should be empty if doesn´t exists you will be asked to create it.
-Enter in mount(target) the path (directoy) of the data that you want to move to external1 , for example " /sdcard/Android/data/directory name "
-check Transfer files from target to data.
-click on Add.
Once the process has finished :
-Check your entry on the main menu by clicking on the check box.
-Click over the diskette on the right side to save it.
-Click on menu - Bind checked.
-Click on More - Backup Database. (I´m stil fighting to make the database backup) use to fail.
After this :
-Go to menu - preferences
- Check Bind on boot.
-Handle USB connection.
-Backup config file.
-use alternate db
Note: If you restart the phone and the database backup failed before, you will lose your bind directory, not the data, you will have to do it all over again, in other thread is explained how to backup the data base, because in my case, even with alternate db checked in directory bind settings, the data base backup is still failing.
Good luck!

I wish Motorola would let you install to the (real) SD card.
I can't really use Spotify, despite having bought a 64GB memory card. I've now had to limit the number of games I can install too.
I expect music and films purchased on Play will also be limited?
In fact, I'd rather use the 64GB card for apps and the internal storage for photos and video recording!!
I will try, hopefully work!

[Q] safe google music on sdcard1 (extsdcard emmc)

Hello,
I am always running out of space because google music lets me only store my music in the internal storage of the razr i.
To solve this I have unlocked my bootloader and have rooted my phone.
My idea was to use the app "folder binding" to bypass this issue.
I have set the app up like described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015964&page=2 (first post on second page).
and the folders "music" and "cache" appear in my newly created directory on my sdcard but my storage still goes down!
What I ve done:
Source: /storage/sdcard1/GMusic
Target: /sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.music/
(confusingly target and source seem to be mixed up in the app "folder binding")
Can anybody help me or suggest a solution? Is there a special trick I have to consider with the razr i?
You could try this proposal: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40122063&postcount=529
Thanks for the help!
what it does is using the external sdcard for both internal and external memory right?
I dont doubt that this works but its not the solution I am aiming at. I just want to store the music from google music on my external sdcard.

Google Play Music Storage Space Mod

This has been posted around other forums before but I found it highly useful.
As we all know, saving music off line on Play Music saves it in internal storage. If you want alot of offline music (like me) and are all in with googles music, this sucks getting it on your ext sd card.
Use Root Explorer.
Create a folder on your ext SD named GoogleMusic, MusicCache, whatever.
Long press that folder and select create link.
navigate to /data/data/com.google.android.music/files and paste the link.
Delete the /music folder that is already there.
Rename your link to music.
Now open your Play music app and press menu and select offline music. the amount available at the bottom should be representative of your sd card free space.
You WILL lose any off line music already stored, you will have to download it again.
you may need to clear app data first.
Enjoy guys:good:
when i try to create the link it says "link failed operation not permitted"
in using root explorer.
Obvious response here, did you make sure its mounted rw in root explorer?

Make sure it is mounted rw, if it doesn't work for you ROM Toolbox can do it too, except it calls it a shortcut.
yea i tried both i guess i cant do it it says in rom toolbox "Please note that many SD cards and some other file systems do not support symbolic links"

That's weird.
You're doing it wrong. You create the link on your EXT SD card and then paste it in /data/data etc. NOT ON YOUR INTERNAL SD CARD.
