[Q] Replace Kernel in Cognition v2.3b8?

Hi Guys,
I just got my Captivate couple days ago. I were able to unlock, root, get a new ROM (Cognition v2.3b8) and install some apps. I'm looking to get a new kernel for the ROM. How would I go about flashing it to a different Kernel like SpeedMod K12I ? Thanks.

I am a noob here. But I am wondering what are/is the benefits/risk of replacing the kernel that comes with Cog v2.3b8 with another. I recently flashed Cog v2.3b8 from stock (batch 1006), and find this is pretty much as stable as stock. Only issue is with GPS (which was hit and miss on stock). So do the benefits of replacing the kernel in Cog v2.3b8 outweigh the risks?

Well kernels have different features and abilities in them. It depends what you want from your kernel. Some might support BLN while others will have OC/UC or just OC. Various combinations of options. You just need to make sure that the kernel/ROM/modem are from the same family, etc. I9000 or Captivate. If you flash a i9000 kernel into a Captivate ROM you might have issues.
Cog v2.3b8 is a Captivate ROM I believe. You can flash Kernels which are for it.

cog runs fine with an i9000 kernel so long as you also use an i9000 modem. i can't run the i9000 roms because of service drops but this set-up is still very good.

If you want to install a new kernel over the existing kernel,
1. Download the Kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880
2. Go to CWM recovery. (directly or through ROM Manager)
3. Choose the zip from SD
4. Flash and Reboot.
Make sure that there is atleast one boot after the ROM is installed.
To confirm,
check Kernel Version in Settings-> About Phone
You should see something like
[email protected]#116

Well each kernel has it's own benefits.
For instance, Speedmod uses sztupy's Universal Lagfix unlike other Kernels that use Vodoo Lagfix.
The main differences would be in the speed and battery. Samsung uses 250hz (as default), firebird kernel uses 300Hz and Speedmod uses 500Hz. Doesn't change battery consumption much but provides more smoothness.
Then the RAM Available. It varies from Kernel to Kernel from 300-350MB.
Cappy Kernels are for Captivate Only because of reorientation fixes and button mapping.

[Q] Flashing/Porting i9000 ROMs

Hey everyone, just a general question about flashing i9000 ROMs. Obviously they have quite a selection over there, and I was just wondering how one would go about porting and flashing them?

You'll need a reoriented kernel. Not too hard to come by, look for exaliburinhand's threads in captivate development

What if I'm flashing a 2.2 ROM? I don't want to mess with Gingerbread at the moment.

Xcal also has a reoriented kernel for 2.2. You can dl out from dev thread, or from SGS TOOLS (kernels are under rom tools).

Awesome. How would I use the reoriented kernel with the i9000 ROM? Just flash through CWM? And what if I want to flash a different kernel? (Onix, SpeedMod, etc...)

Put the redbend_ua and zImage files from the kernel in the updates folder of the rom zip. Overwriting the others. And flash the whole rom in cwm. One stop shopping.

I was thinking SGS Kernel Flasher (which I've used several times with good results).

extra step thats not needed if you know what kernel/modem you want to use in place of whats in the rom zip

Ok, so can someone take me through flashing an i9000 ROM in semi-noob terms?

[Q] Rooting and Installing ROM on GT I9000

Hi,
I finally got a Samsung Galaxy S after finding a great a deal on it. I'm aware that there are several ways on how to root this device. However, due to that I don't know which to use.
Currently I'm running on 2.2.1 Froyo XXJPY with Kernel Version of [email protected] #1.
I'm not totally clueless about rooting as I've done it already on my HTC Wildfire.
Could someone please advise me which is the most up-to-date and safest method of rooting? Link would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm a bit confused about installing ROMs. I used to use CWM on my HTC Wildfire which was incredebly easy to do. Would it be the same on my Galaxy S?
I'm planning to test out MIUI, DarkysROM and such ROMs. Would these ROMs have the LAGFIX feature integrated in them as well?
I apologise if a thread like this has already been posted a thousand times but I just can't come up with a definite answer.

I have a galaxy s Vibrant the I9000M and I rooted and unlocked mine today using SuperOneCick and then The Galaxy s unlock by helroz on the app market took a grand total of 6 minutes

Do I need to root my SGS first to be able to flash custom ROMs?
I also noticed that you would also have to flash firwares and kernels. Do I need to this before flashing custom ROMs?

In order to flash a custom rom you need to have clockworkmod (CWM) recovery.
and from that its easy
As for the newer rom's here, they are all 2.3.x, so in order to get from 2.2.1 JPY, you will need to flash a stock rom 2.3.x with bootloaders via Odin.

That is right... basically when you flash a kernel with CWM you get root access. it's one of the features of a custom kernel. some of them activate it on there own and in some you need to activate it your self from the recovery (very simple).
And all the custom rom's come with root access, so in following the steps you wrote, you will get the root access with the custom kernel, and again in the custom rom.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm now running Armetris 3.6.1 with Semaphore Kernel.
Just a question though, with my phone rooted, lagfix enabled, flashed with custom ROM and such, can I just simply go back to stock ROM? e.g. JVQ/JVR using Odin without any problems?

It is suggested to disable lagfix before changing rom's and kernel's
I know some how would say it is not a must when you use odin, but i always disable it before doing changes. I like to keep it safe.

I thought when you use EXT4 and convert it, Lag Fix would show up but I found nothing, so I just converted back to RFS.
So, I'm fine to directly go back to 2.3.4 JVQ even even I have a custom Kernel and custom ROM?

If you used the EXT4 app and converted to RFS then you have disabled the lagfix.
The lagfix changes the filesystem from RFS to EXT4. so when you converted to RFS yoh disabled it.
So,yes you are good to go.

Also, If I were to flash a JVS Based ROM do I need to be on stock JVS and a JVS Kernel to flash it?
Once on I'm on JVS custom ROM can I just go back again to JVQ stock (Older firmware) without problems?

Basically using odin you can change to JVS and JVQ no problem.
As far as custom rom, from what I know it does not matter on which 2.3.x you are, thay all have the same bootloders. so technically you dont need to be on stock JVS to flash a JVS custom rom.
but I am not an expert on that.
from my experience, i flashed to a JVR (2.3.4) custom rom via CWM from a 2.3.3 stock rom, and didn't had any problems.
So i cant give you a 100% answer

[Q] New on android and I had problems with kernel talondev

I'm new to android and some things I do not understand, for example I have the galaxy captivate with the following characteristic:
Rom Android 2.3.4 I897UCKH3
boog_kh3_kernel3
su-2.3.2-efgh-bin-signed.zip
I updated my cellphone using these files, and all works fine but I wanted install a new kernel the last talondev, but after install it I think that my sgs is on soft bricked, displays the logo of AT & T and then starts "loading talon...", but then restarts.
This kernel can be used with the rom? it is compatible? or What should I do to choose a kernel?

Talon is I9000 port kernel you are using native I897 rom. Use Samurai, Corn kernel or Boog's kernel. Actually Im not sure there is a corn or samurai kernel for KH3. I know they have it for KJ roms.

CM7 has its own special instructions. I haven't kept up with it so go to their thread and read. But ya you can change to custom roms like Fusion IX, Fasty and others that are based of a newer firmware version.

You need to flash back to boog kernel. If this does not work it is best you re-flash to stock KH3 with the one-click solution here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Choose the one WITHOUT bootloaders since you already have those on the phone. It is safer that way.
Regarding CM7 ROMs. You must know they are completely different system compared to the normal Captivate ROMs. Read this thread before flashing:

I recently flashed my Captivate (I897) to stock leaked 2.3.5 I897UCKK1
I am trying to understand what my options are for rooting to regain wifi tethering capability. Unfortunately, I really don't understand the kernel interaction and the potential compatibility issues. Normally, I understand I just need to stay on a kernel that was sourced from the same version (in this case KK1).
Anyway, I am hoping for some information on what kernels might be OK to use with my current ROM. My wish list in a kernel at this point would be BLN, EXT4 Lagfix (Voodoo or new CWM) and Root. From reading, it sounds like there is a lot more support for KK4.. Maybe I need to move to a KK4 ROM as well?

I suspect you're right. KK4 does have a good following since it is the newest leak, and there are several KK4 based ROMs out there in active development that support lagfix.
You won't find BLN on any i897 ROMs, though. There's no source code from Samsung so there is no way for the devs to add it in. For that, you would need to use an i9000 ROM or a 2.2 i897 ROM.
