It is worth to upgrade to Galaxy s2? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, currently i'm using galaxy s. Do you think it is worth the upgrade to galaxy s2?
I already saw how smooth the galaxy s2 browser, i never see any other android phone can do this, even nexus s also can't achieve this smooth. I'm not said other android is slow, they are fast but not in term of smoothness. Even galaxy s with hardware accelerated browser still can't achieve this(lack of optimisation?)
I also read that the upcoming galaxy s2 use ext4 out of box, so the lag should not present in the galaxy s2 like the original galaxy s. Plus with 1.2ghz dual core and 1gb RAM, there is no way it insufficient of RAM with it blazing processor. Here the latest benchmarks for galaxy s2, it score really high although at stock ROM.

I know we should not judge the phone from the synthetic benchmarks, but at least this show how the true raw power of this phone.
So, if you given the choice, would you upgrade the phone to the new galaxy s2?

Depends almost entirely on how much money you have. Even the smallest upgrade is 'worth it' with an unlimited budget, while even the biggest isn't if you can't afford it.
As for me it's impressive but I won't be spending hundreds on a new phone after just one year unless there is some breakthrough in functionality. Slicker screen and smoother performance are nice, but other than that embedded flash video what does it do that my SGS can't? (note I'm not really dying to hook my phone up with hdmi) When the next gen is talking higher screen resolution and there are apps/game with more demanding CPU/GPU requirements, I'll be all over it.

I'm going to be getting it, not sure quite how soon though
I'm mobile, please ignore any spelling mistakes

Worth what? Depends on how much it will cost you, and how much you will miss that amount of money And ofcourse how important having the latest phone is for you.
As for me, I'm not going to buy it just yet cause the SGS still satisfies me, but sure its worth it Its a major upgrade in many aspects. I havent touched one yet but from what Ive seen and read it seems like a seriously badass gadget
So yeah, as far as replacing a perfectly fine phone for a new one is ever worthy, this definately is it, though probably not neccesary yet (sgs still performing with the best of them). Depending on how often you buy a new phone you may or may not want to wait till replacing becomes more urgent.

it's not a necessary upgrade, unless you just want to have the latest and greatest
the SGS is a pretty beefy phone with the proper custom ROM
in fact it's one of the few phones that it can truly do hardware decoding/encoding of multimedia files, and play any game you want.
there's hardly any true reason to get the SGS2 unless you want the new 4.3" screen, and Dual Core CPU, and a bit of extra RAM 1 GB instead of 512
minus the 128 for OS itself that means like 896 usable instead of our current 384 usable

I dont know when you last had 384 usable after the OS is loaded but for the rest of us theres not much more than 100-110mB left after the OS loaded, having 512mB more is one of the biggest pro's of SGS2 i suppose, the lack of RAM is one of the main things holding the SGS performance back especially with big apps.
Still, since better specced phones are only now starting to appear, SGS has no issues with any current apps so for now its a luxury not a neccesity.

Nah, cause when my contract run out, we'll be looking at the Galaxy S3 with quad-core and a gig or two of ram

Without reading whats written up there.
The one and ONLY reason that will make me switch from SGS i9000 to another phone will be the screen resolution. NOTHING else.
The SGS i9000 is fast and fast enough. So no, for me its not worth to upgrade

Yes, htc sensation have high resolution but so far for now,the game developers still not support the resolution in game, so maybe we will see black border?
SAMOLED plus surely hard to resist, for me it like a good upgrade...

Personally Ill get the galaxy tab 10.1 instead of upgrading my phone^^

I'm getting it as I'm due an upgrade in 2 months, however I was always going to replace the SGS because of the poor bluetooth interaction with my in-car system. Aside for these factors I wouldn't have replaced. Whether it's worth it has been aptly answered by haloimplant, I think the question should be would or wouldn't you be getting it and why?

It IS worth, however it is way too expensive for me

What's the best device to replace the Nexus One with this month?

Great phones like Evo 4G have been released and we're looking forward to devices like Samsung Galaxy S, Droid X.
Here's a list of reasons why I'm considering replacing my Nexus One:
Better screen because this could be the single most important part of the phone, like what Jobs said (larger screen, no multi-touch issue, Super AMOLED)
Front-facing camera for video calling
Nexus One can be sold at a good price today, especially in some areas in the world
Physical Keyboard (if there is an option with this all)
Why Samsung Galaxy S?
4.0" seems to be the most optimal size
Super AMOLED
Price
Front-facing camera
I'm most compelled to get the Samsung Galaxy S, because of the price, screen, and availability in my area. EVO 4G is great, but it's CDMA and we don't have 4G here. Droid X is also great, but I don't have details about it's availability.
However, I'm not 100% sure about upgrading now because other phones, especially Samsungs, may not have big Android communities. Imagine the lack of CyanogenMod. Also, custom versions of Android like TouchWiz UI and MotoBlur usually suck. Some versions of Sense UI may be better than stock, but a guy like me is a sucker for stock Android.
What can you suggest?
I'd stick with the Nexus One until Googles next baby comes out.
This is the #1 hardware platform and will have the best community support for quite a while.
And don't forget, the GalaxyS is DivxHD Certified!!!
I'm really liking the DroidX too, the Dell Streak looks just a smidge too big (I've got big hands and really like the idea of a big screen, but not TOO big), and this X at ~4.4" might be in just the right spot!
The Galaxy S sounds cool from a spec perspective but I'm worried about the lack of support from Samsung. They've essentially shunned their phone user base in the past and I'd rather not go through that, especially since Gingerbread is going to be quite a big leap forward for Android.
Also, check out Engadget's preview of the Galaxy S. They have some concerns about the build quality. While the specs are great, and the UI is actually pretty nice; the questionable build quality and dubious manufacturer support history have left me in "wait and see" mode.
Next months DroidX (motorola) looks promising too.
I will give you this single warning. Do NOT get a Samsung phone. The phone is garbage, the support is worse than garbage. For example, the last Samsung phone that I had *never* got an update. It has a bug that it won't give an audible alert that the battery is low. Called TMo, they said it was Samsung's problem, Samsung says it's TMo's problem. Bottom line, I could get a refurb phone that they said would have the same issue since there was no firmware update.
because its a samsung, i would wait and see. the nexus will have the top end community support at least into the beginning of next year.
This is the best phone everrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! You should get it naooooooooo!!!!!!! If you even can that is!!! =P

I agree with everyone else. The N1 will continue to have the greatest developer support and google support. I personally love my N1, I can customize pretty much anything. Even the keyboard can be changed to something more friendly. The screen is beautiful, it doesnt need to be a monitor. The contrast ratio the N1 screen cannot be compared to any screen. The EVO has a big screen but it cant compete with the colors that the N1 puts out.

At least it's smaller than the Evo or Droid X.
Samsung is going to have to demonstrate that they are committed to providing timely software updates for their phones before I would ever consider buying one. Their track record is horrible.
There is no phone out there I would rather have than my N1. I will be waiting 6 months for N2 with Go. Gingerbread.
For me nothing out there can touch the Nexus capabilities right now!

About the EVO 4G...
I'd stick to n1..
Super Amoled still hasn't been fully tested in real world.. regardless of what companies say there is potential for things to go horribly wrong..
Plus.. n1 is definitely get updates faster than samsung.
The n1 is the "pure android experience" so its what I plan on going for..

You can run divx on the Nexus One with the rockplayer apk, can you not?
I have the app, but I've yet to test it so I don't know how good it is.
Like a lot of people, I love the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S and its overall package, but I'm a little skeptic about Samsung Android phones after hearing the upgrade stories online.
Sigh.
i want the galaxy s as well due to the s-amoled.. but im sticking with the nexus mostly because of os updates (froyo)
for me there is no Nexus one replacement as of yet
be waiting for next big HTC phone 1.5 ghz proc. hopefully
im done with motorola and their every week they have a new excuse for and update to get pushed back and as far as the Galaxy S...well i seen how samsung is taking care of their Behold II customers...
No thanks
I tested the Galaxy S a while ago. the screen is very beautiful. the difference of the viewing experience from Nexus One is very evident.
the screen may be the single most important piece of phone hardware, but like what you said, it's worth waiting a little longer for a better device from a better company with better commercial and community support.

What's the best Nexus One replacement this holiday season (2011)?

Many of us are probably due to replacing the N1. It's turning 2 years old, people love buying phones this season, and ICS-friendliness could be a factor.
The Galaxy Nexus is the default choice for many N1 owners, but the latest Nexus doesn't feel like the Nexus One before (a no brainer choice).
I mean, here are some advantages of the Galaxy S II over GNex:
Possible big price and availability advantage
Full RGB vs. Pentile
microSD card
more hand- and pocket-friendly dimensions and weight
8mp + 2mp vs. 5mp + 1.2mp cameras
ARM Mali-400 MP vs. PowerVR SGX540
Gorilla Glass vs. "Fortified Glass"
Due to current huge market share, GS2 has many available accessories and strong support (despite being new, they have almost as many threads in their xda subforum as what we have here for N1)
It gets more complicated. The GS2 may be an easy choice for some, but having hardware buttons can be a deal breaker. Having those physical buttons can make the device inferior/obsolete. Are the buttons that big of a deal?
Thoughts?
Surprisingly, it seems that the galaxy nexus's screen will render text better than the GS2 even with its pentile disadvantage, so I wouldn't consider that a negative. Obviously we'll have to see when the phones are in people's hands though.
I'm going with a galaxy nexus, mainly because google remembered one of the most important things from the N1-the trackball notification light. It's on the same place on the galaxy nexus as it was on the N1, though it's obviously missing the trackball

To be honest, all of my gripes with the nexus S were fixed with this-no more cheap plastic back, *hopefully* decent camera and video drivers, HDMI output, storage space (only somewhat though-no SD isn't ideal but 32gb is the max this would hold anyway), and a notification light. I couldn't care less about the processor and gpu being weaker so long as it delivers a consistent and smooth experience.
And one more benefit to using a phone that doesn't have a strong market share-you won't be using the same phone as everyone else
Also, buttons aren't making your device obsolete if you pick a GS2. I'm playing around with the SDK port on my N1 and the only difference with the new setup on buttonless 4.0 devices is that long-pressing home has turned into its own button, the menu button is now an on-screen button (represented by a vertical ...) that appears on one of the action bars, and the search button has disappeared. On devices with buttons, the ... button in an app disappears and is toggled by the traditional menu button, and long-pressing home will bring up the recent apps. This is the best they could do without fragmenting legacy devices.
I've got the N1 and I'm on TMo. I can't stress enough how aggravated I am that Verizon gets the Galaxy Nexus first! The TMo version BETTER be right behind it, as far as release date!
Here's my Win/Lose breakdown of The Galaxy Nexus vs. the Galaxy S II
* (GSII Win) Going with the OMAP4460 on the GN was a total 'WTF' for me. Almost a deal breaker.
* (GN Win) With a 4.5" screen, the GSII has only 800x480 rez!! That's the same rez as my N1 now with only a 3.7" screen! Not even a kick-up to 960x540! Unfortunately this is a deal-breaker for me.
* (GN Win) Though the Galaxy Nexus has a lower megapixel rating, it's got the zero-lag shutter and supposedly better low-light capability. As well, it shoots full 1080p/30fps.
* (GN Win) The GN being Pentile screen becomes a moot point when you factor in the 1280x720 at whatever ridiculously high dpi.
* (GN Win) I agree with OJ, having the LED back is great!
* (GN Win) It's got the NFC Chip. I just recently read that NJTransit is going to be supporting Google Wallet at a bunch of stations and buses. This is great for me.
* (GN Win) it's got a Barometer chip! A Google Dev cleared up the reasoning behind the baromter...Faster and more accurate GPS lock!
* (GN Win) It's got ICS pre-loaded and it's a Google phone. So it's got the new OS and it'll be the first to get all the updates/fixes.
The Galaxy Nexus is top of my (very short) list as far as choices for my next phone, but because they pulled back the reins on the CPU and are coming out on VZW first...I'll be keeping my eyes open for what all comes out on the market while I wait for a TMo version.
If you look at the press release for the Verizon GN and the Droid RAZR, you'll notice that the RAZR's press release uses the word "verizon exclusive" multiple times and the nexus's press release has no mention of the word "exclusive" anywhere. Don't get your hopes down until they announce actual, final availability.

****, of all the stuff ive seen, i missed that. Its a done deal now for me.
Galaxy Nexus, because it's a Nexus.
Simple, isn't it?
One big advantage is in my opinion is "fastboot oem (un)lock", ok other vendors also offer this unlock but not the re-lock
And I love that Screen (actual ppi is higher than SGS2)...

Only a small small small minority of Nexus One users can successfully fastboot-oem-lock. In fact if you wish to take your phone back for warranty repair, one of the phones with a one click root is a far better option.
I think the camera is a let down for me I was hoping samsung pushed a new lens for better quality pictures. Also the non gorilla glass might suck if you dont take care of the device built quality looks to be the same as the GSII.

cant decide which win7 tab to get...

before you say it, yes i know win7 isnt a good tablet os. i know. i dont care i still want one. lol.

my arguments for gigabyte:
much faster cpu (atom equivalent of an i3)
standard 2.5" hdd allows more and cheaper upgrade options (hybrid hdd anyone?)
dual usb with one superspeed
mouse pad, mouse buttons and scroll buttons make it much easier to navagate freely, also certain combos will send certain commands like C+A+D
looks really sexy, pretty much like the hp slate
thoughts: if it had atleast 720p resolution and atleast dx10 supported gpu id be all over this thing
summary: has ehh hardware compared to msi but ease of use seems exponentially bettermy arguments for msi:
slightly cheaper
ips display at 720p+ (you sexy beast)
lower tdp cpu
radeon 6 series gpu with dx11 absolutely OBLITERATES any atom gma (the ability to do some light gaming like bejeweled and heavy weapon would be nice, at more than 15 fps would be even better)
double the ram at a higher data rate
msata insures low power consumption
dual cameras
gps (cuz why not)
slightly bigger battery
dedicated C+A+D button can be pretty useful
tpm security module
thoughts: if i could find a better cpu to upgrade to i could live with everything else and would buy this thing in a heartbeat but lack of mouse controls, super slow cpu and lack of i/o ports are a real turn off
summary: has some fairly impressive hardware for a tablet, but the ease of use seems lacking compared to the gigabyte
I can see where this will end up, so ib4l
ha ha ha! way to be productive bro.

oh yes i know ive been here since i found the place back when the og evo came out so i know that people can be really helpful... when it comes to phones. other things tend to be not so much. atleast in my experience.
I had no intention of being a troll - it was early in the morning here, I briefly skimmed the OP and had visions of it going exactly the same way the recent Mac thread has gone, turning into a haters vs fanboys outing.
To be honest, I would also recommend waiting for one of the 'Surface' tablets running Windows 8. 7 just isn't designed for tablets and is still really difficult to utilise without a keyboard - I speak from experience as I am an EPoS engineer by trade and spend half my life using both XP & Win 7 based touch-screen PC systems in my job.
I have played with 8 and it just looks much better designed and far more ideal for the Tablet market.
The arm version of the surface would have a processor that is similar to those of android tablets and the ipad right now. You wont be able to run any current windows programs on it. However the pro version of the surface should run older windows programs, in addition to the metro apps. The pro version will most likely be a bit pricey though.

Yes I just looked it up and saw that and that is my problem with new Surface machines. RT is supposed to start out at $600 but basically is a glorified WinMob/WinPhone, and since its ARM it will most likely use SOCs which means no CPU or RAM expansion options. On the other hand 8/Pro will be fully compatible with everything and use standard mobile components, but starting at $1000+ is way out of my price range. Again, I have an expensive ass laptop for the power computing area of my life, I just wanted this as a thing that is more mobile and just to mess around with it. And as far as the keyboard thing, SimonTS, a $15 generic mini USB keyboard case from Amazon can easily solve that problem.
I guess when I end up being able to buy something Ill go for the Gigabyte because of the body, ports, and the couple of accessories offered by Gigabyte compared to the... nothing that MSI offers (that Im aware of at least). I bet I can replace the screen on it too hopefully.

[Q] I9305 Speed/Lag ?

For any I9305 S3 owners .. Whats the overall speed (fluidity) like on your device.
Do you get any sort of lag whatsoever, simple things like running a live wallpaper in the background etc. ?
Want to know as this is one of my options for an upgrade.

Well recently I updated to official 4.1.2 German firmware and its quite fluid. I find the only basic annoying lag is when you press the home key. Theres a lot of lag and then it decides to go to homescreen. Otherwise I have few eegrets. I however recommend a Galaxy Note 2. Bigger, faster processor, and comes with s pen. Thats if you can manage the extra size. Otherwise the s3 is your best bet
As far as I know the S3 uses exactly the same processor as the Note 2.
The Note 2's is just overclocked to 1.6ghz, we can do this on the S3 quite easily.
Mines running 1.7 ghz so it's faster than Note 2.
Sent from my GT-I9305 using xda app-developers app
No, the Note2's chip is at revision 2.0, whereas the SGS3's is at v1.1. The Note2's chip is better.
The LTE version of the SGS3 is exactly the same as the non LTE version (I have both). They can both be as fast or slow as you want them to be depending on the CPU and governor settings you apply.
Live wallpapers? I was running live wallpapers on my single core 1GHz HTC Desire, i really don't think a quadcore 1.4GHz beast is going to struggle.
That's interesting about the processor, I asked if they were the same in the store when I was weighing up between Note 2 and LTE S3. The guy in the store said the processors were identical, just Note 2 is clocked at 1.6 ghz. Just shows how much they know!
Oh well I still don't regret my decision the i9305 is a beast of a phone and the Note 2 is just toooooo big for me.

Trust me you won't regret it, I upgraded from a normal S3 and see the difference with multi tasking the extra 1 gb ram and the ability to support lte and also dc-hsdpa ( faster form of 3g) that's not present on the normal s3 makes this phone standout. It's what the original s3 should have always been to start with

S III LTE is one of the best phone currently out there, with a continuously growing base of custom rooms, kernels, mods etc. Even on the stock rom the UI is very smooth. Altough (at your own risk) I would recommend rooting and debloating the phone.
The 2GB RAM is the kicker.

I have an i9300, i9305 and the i9505 (S4).
I find it hard to believe that the only difference between the i9300 and i9305 is the extra ram. The i9305 absolutely blows the normal S3 away. To the point that I literally only began using the i9300 only for calls / text. Lag on the i9300 is massive in comparison.
And the difference in battery life is enormous. I've owned 3 i9300's and 3 i9305's so this wasn't a case of a bad phone. All 4g models had / have much better battery life. So much for 4g phones being battery hogs. Simply not true.
To be honest I don't find the s4 any quicker than the i9305. It's a beauty. And I agree this is what the i9300 should have been.

convince me not to get an S4

hey guys,
i have been hyped about the HTC one since announcement, but yesterday a friend of mine told me 2 reasons to get the s4 instead that had me thinking:
1. SD card expansion, claims 32GB will not be enough and 64GB is not available in my region
2. Mainstream, in my region S4 will have more accessories, easier support than HTC
I love the HTC one but i am not sure if i must go with a brave choice that i love or a safe choice that i don't hate

many dev's complained about Samsungs new way of not supporting mods or custom roms. In contrary, HTC (and especially the Snapdragon 600) offer great support for the modding scene.
Apart from that, i personally dislike the whole 5"-hype. 4,7" is my personal maximum, otherwise i'd feel like i'd talk to a brick in my hands. I won't talk about the obvious things like the awesome screen, boomsound and the build quality for now, because there are more than enough reviews about that everywhere.
When it comes to storage, i personally don't care about having the option of using any SD-card. I had a 16 GB SD in my Galaxy S2 before and never used it's full capacity, so i don't think i'll fill up the internal storage of my One ever.
If you got a Samsung your just be getting the same old thing i had a note 2 good phone but not a scratch on the one its a pretty awesome phone
There are many possible remedies if you suffer from lack of storage: cloud storage & USB OTG (OTG cable or microsd card reader).
I've seen a ton of accessories for the One already. Of course, Samsung is more well-known than HTC, so there are probably more accessories made for it, but how many accessories do you need for one phone? (As this is my first HTC phone, I'm not well versed in their support department, so I'll let someone else answer that.)
Ultimately, it comes down to what you want in a phone. There are pros and cons to every phone. You won't find "the perfect phone" because it doesn't exist. Your personal likes and usage pattern should determine which phone you get.
Really there is no way to convince anyone. My recommendation is to go into a shop and try them both and see which one you like. Each device has it's pros and cons depends on personal preference. Good luck.

hey guys,
i have been hyped about the HTC one since announcement, but yesterday a friend of mine told me 2 reasons to get the s4 instead that had me thinking:
1. SD card expansion, claims 32GB will not be enough and 64GB is not available in my region
2. Mainstream, in my region S4 will have more accessories, easier support than HTC
I love the HTC one but i am not sure if i must go with a brave choice that i love or a safe choice that i don't hate
ideas ?

Hah! I won't try to talk you out of anything , it's YOUR MONEY!!
instead , you should ask yourself how you plan to use it.
1.Only when you stockpile lots and lots of musics or videos in your phone, and NEVER delete them, then you will need an extra SD card.
32GB is definitely enough for most people. OTG and cloud are good options , but lets not get too much into them, assuming you don't plan to use them. I can even live with my 16G nexus 7...
2.True. but I always keep my phone naked so it's nothing to me really. I am sure you could find a nice accessory anyway, just not as much choices as S4.
not choosing ONE also means you have to give up the good feeling in your hand, eye-candy looks, incredibly good stereo...(no, I don't mean BEAT). It's not a life-risking choice you know? 90% users could be happy with both.
I can understand that someone direly need SD / removable battery. it just not matters that much to me.
htc one has the best unique design.
Buy an S4 and the kitten gets it!

S4 will be no better than the One. The screen will be poop, the camera will be ok, the UI will be poop, the audio from the speaker will be poop, the design will be poop, the software will be bloated with rubbish you don't need that you'll constantly have to turn off, you'll have to buy a case to hide it, you'll feel like you bought an S3 and no one will know you've upgraded.
HTC One is just smooooth and very cool.
