Ok guys, I already have Firefly rom installed on my captivate and would like to know what I have to do. Do I have to uninstall the firefly rom first?
read the instructions in the OP of the cyanogen installation thread, it clearly states how to install the ROM (and nowhere does it say anything about going back to stock)

I have done reading a lot of post recently.
I brick'ed my cappy once, I reflash the stock kernel, and it came back alive.
After that, I managed flashing my I897 into Foyo 2.2 and with Cog 2.4.1 Rom.
So far so good.
I am still very afraid of brick my cappy again.
So, I decided post question here, just to clear my mind.
If I wanna flash it into an I9000 Rom from Cog 2.4.1 Rom
What are the right steps ??
My current system config is listed here
Firmware 2.2
Baseband Version - I897 UCJJ4
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9
Build Number - Cognition. v2.4.1
The best thing you can do is decide which i9000 Rom you want to flash to and read the OP of that thread for exactly how to flash. It is gonna require both odin and clockwork though. Which Rom are you wanting to go to?

From your opinion, which I9000 Rom is most popular ?? (This might be the best one i think)
Is it ganna be better than Cog's I897 rom ??
Really I prefer to stick with cognition but there is no denying that setirons kernel is the best one going right now but it doesn't play well with cognition. If I was going to go i9000 I would use mikeymikes conversion of docs Rom...it looks really nice and everyone in that thread loves it.
Hello, hopefully this hasn't been posted anywhere before, I couldn't find anything on it though. I have Perception 10.4 on my Captivate, and as you might know it is a I9000 based rom. I want to flash to Darkyy's Extreme Edition 9.3 for Captivate and I just have some questions about it.
1.) Should I just follow the instructions given on Darkyy's page?
2.) Do I need to flash a different kernel or modem?
3. Is there anything else I should know?
Thanks guys, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here are the links to the Darkyy's Rom and Perception, in that order.

Thanks again.
Edit: I'm dumb, I have Perception 10.1 and not sure if that is I9000 or not. Sorry about the confusion.
Bump

I'm currently running it and followed most directions to b safe so I'd just flash tht Odin file he provides n then flash the rom
i love all roms
Sounds good, thanks man. So it is a pretty good rom?

Just follow the OP for darkyy's 9.3! Do part 1 and part 2 as given in the instructions. And be sure to select Wipe in the DarkyRom Configurator in Part 2 to avoid issues with a new base JS5.
If you have any issues with installation, ask in that thread and anyone there would help u out!
I like it but I haven't flashed a rom I haven't liked
i love all roms
Just read the instructions as they are clear for what is necessary. Each step in the process works and you don't need to do anything different unless you choose to change modem or kernel after you install 9.3 Captivate version.
Hi Guys
I am upgrading to a SGS i9000. Previously had a Motorola Milestone, custom kernel is new to me.
I've been searching and couldn't find anything. I want to load gingerbread XXJVK and use SpeedMod Kernel. Will this cause any problems? If I do experience problems would it be straight forward to go back to stock kernel?

Speedmod is a kernel designed to run with Froyo, not Gingerbread. Many custom 2.3.3 ROMs have you install Speedmod as an intermediary step just to get CWM installed, but it will not work with JVK. You will need to install one of the kernels specifically designed to support JVK.
I STRONGLY suggest you read the many threads posted here about JVK and the process of flashing to it, AFTER you have read the stickies about flashing ROMs on the i9000. Foreknowledge is always better than Support Calls.

Thanks for the advice. I keep going back to the stickies about flashing ROMs to i9000. I guess I will keep reading.
I would wait for the release of Gingerbread . Once its released the devs are going to have a more complete set up to work with .

There's no source to work from... so there's no speedmod as of now. Your best shot could be supercurio's hacked JVK kernel which can convert partitions to ext4. But remember, the rom is still a beta.
My SGS came today. I'm going to look at flashing darky's rom tonight.
I have Cyanogenmod7 RC3 on my milestone at the moment but I don't think I'll miss the 2.3 features.
Again thanks everyone for the advice
hi guys,
i'm a noob.
need some help over here.
i'm using galaxy S i9000.
i rooted my device with speedmod kernel k13e-500hz #36 but firmware is v2.2.
is theer anyway to upgarde to v2.3 with rooted kernel??
many thanks
If I purchase the full (premium) version of ROM Manager will I be able to update from Cog4 to Cog5 through the app? Or is it always best to just wipe it and load the newest?
Just FYI I loaded my first and only ROM in Jan and haven't done anything since.....
No. And Cog 5 is close to be dead if not already. Sadly Desing Gears has moved on.
Edit: Also you need Gingerbread bootloaders to run ANY gingerbread rom except Cm7 and MIUI
Hi guys, I've read all the threads, couldn't find anything.
I am currently running Firefly 3.0 (Froyo 2.2) on my (originally) Rogers i896 Captivate (after rooting it changed to AT&T boot screen and now thinks its the SGH i897).
I was looking to move up to 2.3 or even ICS but don't know if I HAVE to go back to Rogers 2.1 stock to do this or simply flash over a new 2.3 rom on my Firefly 3.0 by booting into Recovery and "install zip from sdcard'?
Any ideas.
HEres more info on Firefly 3.0 = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914284
Uhhhh...u didn't read all of the threads
Check out TRusselo's Guide in this forum that is a Sticky thread...

that's a great guide.
another option is to get Apex ROM Heimdall one-click version and flash it along with GB bootloaders.
ODIN never worked for me.
