Hi all,
I have one small request for developers here. I have HD2 too and prefer Android on this device but one think is extremely annoying for me - PowerUp using End call button. very often I have situation when my phone power UP in my pocket and unlocked and runs some apps. So I have idea use Volume Up or Down or both to wake Up device but all buttons under screen should be dissabled in sleep mode. In normal mode when device is on end call button can be used to turn off device or put it to sleep mode - just want to wake up it using Volume button. I think it is not so hard and can be compiled in roms as option. What do you thing about it?
Regards,
Marcin.
I think you should wear trousers that aren't so tight.
I think this is a great idea!

Say no to tight trousers. They mess with your phone!

I agree. Tight trousers are so impractical...

Then it is not put in your pocket...
What is the point having a Cellphone powered down in your pocket!
does "button remapper" do this ?

I'd love that, often happens to me and I'm wearing pants that don't strangulate my testicles.
Are you guys using a sense rom? I've noticed the sense slide down lock screen is very easily unlocked. With the stock android lockscreen I don't have this problem.

Yes I'm using sense ROM, but other thing is that display is on when you don't need this...
+1 it looks like good idea. I Hope remapping possible.
If your device unlock itself and run some apps, use unlock pattern or password for extra protection.

CyanogenMod unlock gestures solve this, but be happy the only thing on the front is the power button, I used to have a Tmobile Dash, and it called 911 while I was squating down into my brothers little clown car once o.o
not a GREAT idea...
hi this is a good idea, but i use button remapper and works perfectly !!
wake up on volume up all another buttons disabled for wake up !!
click here for more info :
Button Remapper
Buttonremapper works only for the front buttons on my hd2. I can set power button for wake, other buttons only make the key backlight light up.
But volume buttons don't do anything. Too bad, because that would be very useful.

Is there a way to wake the phone from its sleep mode without opening up the keyboard? That's the only way I can figure out.
Thanks!
A quick press of the power button on the side will wake it up.
This is written in the instruction manual.
You should have read that before using the phone.
reaffect power button
is-it possible to use another button instead of the power button in order to power on/off the screen?
Yes - if you disable the setting that stops all the other buttons from waking the device up (to avoid answering calls and making calls etc when its in your pocket).
man that power button is hard to push though. am i the only one who has trouble finding it by touch alone? i was thinking of carving out an indentation in the casing to help my thumb 'find' it, but thought better of it....

what i do is set the keys to lock when the phone is locked then use s2u to serve as the lock. I havent accidently called anyone yet so i think its the quickest way to resolve the issue not to mention i like the way it makes my phone look

I saw someone did a simple mod to make it easier to find. Dont remember where i saw it. if it find it'll post a link.
but what they did was bought a little "nub" from a craft store and glued it to the power button to make it stick out more so it was easier to find. It looked pretty good and probably did help in this situation. I've thought about doing the same.
That said, I essentially did what Neva said in the last post. I use S2U2 (Slide2Unlock2) to lock the phone. And I set my phone to be "awakened" by any key press. And S2U2 is config'd to always run on wakeup. So I can't make a phone call by accident. it works great.
You can set the phone to awaken on any key press by setting here:
Settings | System | Key Lock | Do not lock buttons
Here's the link to the Power Button mod...

Amazing what you can find if you search the forum.
Hey yall, Back when I didn't know any better I had an iphone and the power button was broken so I had an app that when I double clicked the home button it would turn off the screen.
I went to CM setting and found the thing that let me use the trackball to turn ON the phone, but Is it possible to get something simialer to what I had on the iPhone? a double click to turn off the screen thingy for the trackball?
Reteach yourself to use the power button the correct way.
Yeah that ^
Seriously you are going to kill the life of that track ball lol
I'd like to know an answer to this too, simply because my power button no longer works!

you can use power off widgets i see some in market there is some for reboot and i i remember well another to power off but need root
is there any possible way to be able to touch the screen and return its from the timed out backlight insted of the power button then the actual unlocking....
Not sure about touching screen, but there's an app called NoLock that will make it so there's no lockscreen and hitting the power button unlocks it. Eats battery though.

Is there any way? Probably. Is it a good idea? Probably not. Just having the screen up to your thigh in your pocket would be enough to turn the screen on and thus drain your battery.
Not just drain your battery, but imagine calling people unexpectedly, random texting, somehow enabling options and selecting factory reset . There's a reason why there's a lock/unlock button.
Being a lefty, I wish you could turn the screen on using the volume buttons instead.

I can. Hold them for a second and the screen should turn on when you release them. If it doesn't let me know I'd like to investigate further.

Nope, not working. It turns it on using NoLock but then that just changes the volume too.
Im running Darkys 7 btw.

Holding the volume button does not turn on the screen, you probably touched the power button with you middle finger which holding the volume button with your thumb.
Widget Locker
Try the app WidgetLocker--it's a couple bucks but lets you turn on the screen with the volume buttons if you want (any hardware button). It will also let you customize your lockscreen with widgets and unlock the screen using the soft keys at the bottom if you so desire.
Mentioned this app in previous threads, should really start getting a cut from the developer.

You really should believe people when they say something works. Just because your rom works one way doesn't mean anything about everyone else.
Now if someone would give me a link to the roms which don't unlock due to the volume buttons, I might be able to fix that.
lmao love the music

I am not using a custom ROM. Maybe some custom ROM has that feature added but it definitely does not work on stock AT&T ROM.
Works on stock 2.2 Froyo leak ROM

That's not a stock ROM by any means.
I wish the volume buttons were lower on the case. I have a tendency to squeeze them with my finger when pressing the power button one-handed.
Hi guys! I am buying a Nexus One. I just read about the power button problem. I wanted to know if there is any way that I could take care of my power button so that it does not break. I also wanted to know if there was a possible way of remapping the power button, for example the power button dies out on me, I could use the Volume up button to power on my device (cold boot).
Well that depends if you're running stock ROM or rooting and installing a custom ROM. I'm gonna assume you're gonna root and say to get a ROM with trackball root. This way you can unlock with the trackball and save your power button. You can also get a one of many apps that lets you lock the phone from a homescreen widget.
If you're not planning on rooting you could install GoLocker which would let you unlock with the volume rocker. Think the locking widgets should still work too.
Hope that helps.
I read somewhere that pressing the power button from the side closest to the headphone jack would also prevent damage to it. Is this true? I haven't really gotten my N1 yet so it's kind of hard to visualize how the power button works on it.
Yeah like addam360 stated, I use CM7 ROM with trackball unlock/trackball wake.
Barely use my power button. There's also app like Quickboot which let me reboot or reboot to recovery without having to use the button.
CM7 ROM also have an option to shut down via widget.
As for which side to push I really couldn't tell you.

I've had my N1 for over a year with no power button issues - Check out my signature; I did a huge long post explaining my reasoning.

So that's where I got the info of pressing closest to the audio jack. Thanks very much for the info. So what if I were to place a thin piece of paper between the trace and the plastic power button head so that it does not press down on the trace? Do you think this will help preserve the trace?
I have had my nexus one for a year and 8 months, I haven't payed attention to where I click the button and its still working properly.

Mine failed around that time. Luckily still under warranty so HTC fixed it. (Audio jack went at same time and fixed also)

If anything, that would probably push the trace down more every time you pressed the power button. If you really want to try a fix, see about grinding down the part of the power button above the trace - that way you won't accidentally press it on the wrong side.
I'm using an EVO 3d so I don't have insight for the N1 but I do know moving parts break. It's one reason I think slideout keyboards are retarded. But most aosp roms allow trackball wake. Me personally I think my volume down is going out. Scrolling in recovery to my download folder is like 16 presses lol. Lucky for me I can get a new back cover and be back to new.

After a year of use, the unlock button is dead, I've been using Smart screen on for now, but I want to know if I can remap the useless G button to unlock or turn on/off the phone
I also tried opening it to clean it, but the screws are too tight
I'm on Cyanogenmod 10 btw

Just remap the G-button like it's writen in this forum already a hundred times, especially if your on CM10 and don't have the 2.3.4s deep sleep problem.

If you're not on gingerbread, then you don't have this bug. This bug doesn't allow waking up the phone after a few minutes of deep sleep by G button.
But the g buttons for waking the phone works well in CM10/ICS. (of coure you have to remap it)
How do I do it? The instructions say I have to modify a file, but it's not where it's supposed to be
try one thing
i had this with cm10 and v30b
flash zeus and it will be fine
it's deep sleep
If you are using Cm10 go in settings and set a volume rockers wake.Nothing else, just settings.
