[Q] Uses for a disconnected Hero? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just upgraded to the Epic 4G
Running SyndicatedROM Frozen 1.1 and it does everything
Now, what to do with my old phone...
Needless to say, my old phone is the HTC Hero CDMA, and it is no longer connected. Really sad since it's a perfectly good phone. I've been having trouble re-gifting to my friends because they are too cheap for Sprint, and they don't like the concept of texting on a (small) touch-screen phone.
I have been using it as my primary music player to off-load the battery drain on my Epic. However, it bugs me to use it *just* as a music player. With that said, what are some other uses for a disconnected Hero?
BTW - I'm running CyanogenMod7 rc4. And before you mention it, I know the stable release is out. I'll get around to it... eventually.

I use mine as a remote for my XMBC media player ( converted acer revo ) I can view all my media and tv shows etc on the hero's screen.. its nice..

I have an old deactivated one that I use for mostly a music player / newsreader / game player on the road. It also occasionally functions as a remote for my PC/TV and a testbed for ROMs that I don't want to flash on my new Hero. (The old one got dropped in the snow and the speaker no longer works; though the headphone jack works fine... hence the replacement).
I have thought about getting a VoIP client set up on it (not sure if Google Voice would work with a deactivated phone or not) to use as a "home phone".
It does seem like a shame, though, huh? All that wasted glory.

I just use mine for music. I found that the Hero doesn't work well as a gaming device since it lacks a decent GPU, and reading is fairly difficult, especially now that I'm use to to the Epic. In speaking of test beds, do you have any ROM recommendations for me? I'm looking for something lightweight; just for music, and a back-up phone.

That would be a great idea! I'll look into it. The Hero was great while it lasted. The perfect alternative to the iPhone that wasn't buggy as hell *cough, cough**Moment!**cough*

The gingerbread ROM builds started out as awesome and have only gotten better. I run aosp's 3/26 build with the s0be 2.6.35 #5 kernel on both of my Hero's and it is a million times snappier and stable than stock ever was. The 3/26 build is very small and let's you choose which Google apps to install, so it can be kept pretty lean.
Otherwise I'll just flash a new ROM on the old one first to test it out before putting it on my new one.

Yeah yeah yeah... I should upgrade. I really should.
Another suggestion for music; if you're short on sd card space and will have WiFi access with your Hero, check out Subsonic music streamer. It lets you stream your music through the web and they have an Android app.

That's a sweet idea and thanks for the app too. Hopefully the EVO 3d doesn't use too much of my SD card memory but ill keep my hero for experimental purposes. Because I plan on learning how to fully theme Roms this summer , so the Hero will be a good experimenting phone.

I have att nexus with service. If i flash a rom, do I need to change any setting to have phone functionality completely working? What is the best image out there for a noob that just needs tethering and maybe a little bit snappier n1?
Thanx in advance
The best suggestion would probably be to stay stock for a while and explore the system as it is, since it's great even completely stock.
You can try Cyanogen mods. Just make sure you read the wiki properly and do what it says. You do not have to change any settings to get the original functionality. You will lose the apps you have installed when you flash a new ROM. So back them up first.
thanx
thank you, coming from an iphone 3g, i should have done this soooo long ago. the n1 is so much faster at everything. I used to listen to a bunch of podcast, is there anything out there like itunes that i can grab all the podcasts from?
thank you
yes just install google listen, it does all audio podcasts, and even syncs them with your google account.
other podcast apps will do video if that's what you want.
what about music player?
what is everyones favorite music player?
since being stuck on apple for 2 years never new what a real phone should be. my n1 is worth every penny.
thanx

Doubletwist is a pretty nice media player (video/audio), a lot of others use cubed as their media player (both free), doggcatcher is a good podcast app (great audio and video podcasts), doggcatcher isn't free but you can refund paid apps for a little while after purchase if you dont like them

Got my HD7!

Hi Everyone,
My HD7 arrived today and I have started to set it up etc. (I am in the UK)
Any questions you want to know fire them at me.
I am coming from a Galaxy S so it does seem a tad limited for now until the apps catch up.
So far I have noticed the following oddities.
OS based Issues MS need to fix
Video player does not play audio via A2DP. (music does)
Bluetooth settings lack any options for type (Headset/Stereo) settings (no real issue)
Mobile IE does not render Toodledo/slim well so not sure about other sites.
Zune software - Podcast section does not appear in market in UK have to add rss feeds manually to the app.
No custom ringtones/other sound settings
No option to connect to WIFI with hidden SSID
Only syncs main calendar from any source not any additionals.
Media HUB only remembers the location of the last video in the play list that is "paused" once you move to other items of music or other videos it forgets the place.
Other issues not OS related. (all will be fixed over time with good apps)
Lack of apps is a real issue on day one. This should change.
No TODO app with push notifications available! big issue for me.
YouTube App just loads the m.youtube.com so its really just a player engine once you pick a video from the site.
Videos get converted on the fly during sync which makes this a slow process. Should kick off the conversion as soon as you say sync to phone.
Other than these points the phone itself is really nice and fast, no lag at all.
Takes some getting used to but I am trying hard to make it all work.
Russ
No connection to hidden SSID? That sucks!
Can you categorise imported/synched videos into any album you want and rename the albums? So I could have say one video album labelled FAMILY, one labelled, FUNNY, one labelled MOVIES etc
Thanks for the input. What's your opinion of the screen coming from samoled? How is the ringer volume compared to the Samsung?

I got mine today, just sold my Galaxy S, still have my iPhone 4.
Screen is almost as good as iPhone, nothing like Super AMOLED sadly.
Biggest issue for me is speakers are terrible.
Kev
Oh okay thanks for the info. I had an ip4 so if its close to that I am cool. I hate to hear the speakers suck. That's big issue for me. Especially since I can't add my loud ringers I usually add if speakers suck on the phones I get

I thought the HTCs had Dolby Surround or whats it called How can they be worse than the competitors?
I may be mistaken but Dolby Sound and SRS only work when headphones are plugged in. Maybe someone can confim.
i Can confirm that both SRS and Dolby mobile work through headphones and through the speakers, when putting on Dolby does make it sound slightly louder and clearer for me!!
That's great to hear

As far as I can make out on my Zune software I can not group videos into playlists so there does not seem to be an easy way to get it to auto sync unless you pick the ALL option.
Still messing with it though.

Agreed, the screen is nowhere as good as the Galaxy but if you have never had a Super Amoled then I dont think you will be disappointed.
Speaker volume is very low compared to my Galaxy also. I thought the grills at top and bottom were speakers but they are just for show.
The speaker is next to the camera on the back.

This is not true, without the Youtube app you can't play Youtube Videos from the website. The App contains necessary Code/Drivers which allow you to play Youtube videos whethere going through the App/Link or from IE.
Also the Front Mounted Speakers are still being questioned. HTC seemed to have advertised the phone to Reviewers/Critics as having "Front Mounted Stereo Speakers" however atm they are either not used (software update required from M$) or HTC were lying. I'd like to hope it's teh first one but you never know
The Screen on mine is brilliant when the brightness is set to High. When on Auto it seems to keep screen brightness on Medium which is a bit rubbish and doesn't show it off very well. Get it on High and you'll notice the difference. It's (very) hardly noticable from the HTC Desire's when they're side by side, but the fact it's massive far outways that.
Thats was my point about it being just a player engine (codecs etc). I was comparing what I know from Android for a youtube app and was suprised it was not a full in app experience.
But being able to play the videos at all is a big plus.
Agree on the screen, set on HIGH it looks very nice and anyone will be happy with it but I am not sure what impact the battery is going to take. Side by side with a galaxy S though you do see the difference but if you never had a super Amoled then you wont care at all.
What is a score with Low - Med - High anyway, wheres the slider for brightness. Seems like a miss that should have been easy.
Russ
Ah apologies I misread you on the YouTube thing. I've left my screen brightness on high for a few days now and I must say I haven't even noticed a difference in battery life, although tbh my battery life is terrible anyway. Why HTC chose a 1200 instead of a 1500 is beyond me.
Waiting on my new HTC HD7 arriving this afteroon, been using an HTC HD2 with hacked Android and love it apart from the bugs etc...
Have 14 days to decide weather its worth it or if i need to switch carries to the Desire HD...
Hurry up DHL!!!
Did you already try to install on your HD7 some .CABs developed for WM6 ?
There are a couple of apps (SPB Wallet, iGO8) I couldn't live without, and losing them under WM7 would be a big problem.
Thanks

1) Absolutely, positively no possible way ANY Windows Mobile apps will run on Windows Phone 7 as it exists today.
2) What is this "WM7" of which you speak?

...you mean that NO existing app running on WM6.x will run under WM7 ?
No backward compatibility ?
Apps have to be completely rewritten ?
Please tell me I'm wrong
PS WM7 = Windows Mobile 7
exactly, WP7 and WM6 are 2 different pairs of shoes. You also cannot run a Windows program on a Commodore C64 Btw. there is on Windows Mobile 7, it´s called Windows Phone 7,
cheers

WinPho7 can't multitask so...

Is there any way that at least music, Like Slacker or Music Player, can work in the background? I know that's what "not able to multitask" is, but this is a BIG downer for me. I like having Slacker or Pandora (HD2) running all day with my headphones in, but still be able to perform basic functions on the phone,
No unfortunately not at the moment. It will play with the phone background off but that is it. If you have to go to another program and then hit back it will resume/stream again.
Zune obviously plays in the background but so far not another player. I wonder when pandora will finally release the WP7.

I loved Pandora. But I would take any music program that would play in the background while still being able to text/surf the web like I used to on the HD2.
Small drawbacks to getting a brand spankin' new software. Gotta wait for these small things to hopefully change.
zune natively.does.that right now. I love zune and how on this phone its awesome. Signed up for a year pass. Can't beat it. Unlimited streaming of any song they have and 10 songs to keep forever is great.
Try zune if you are looking for a music player that will play while surfing, emailing etc.

Thanks for the advice. I was looking more into a free way of doing it like Pandora or Slacker, FM Radio ect (well as far as not pay for a membership to like Zune ect) I'd pay for an app.
Guess time will tell on what there chef's can do for the new windows...
I use Zune without a pass and I have transferred all my music and download all my podcasts and everything works a teat
CD (UK)
Yea, it's good for once you get your music on it, but I don't have a computer that I can use Zune. All my music is at work and i opnly have iTiunes, on a MAC, and can not download any programs.

I'm sure I read MS have loosened the controls on running apps in the background as long as it meets certain targets on battery usage, so it really depends if winmo gets enough mindshare for pandora etc to make an app for it
Yeh they did, I remember reading that spotify said they are making an app for WP7 and that it will run in the background
That would be reat. Sounds like they didn't allow it due to they didn't want the phone to run slow, and the performance going back to them? I'd rather my phone run a little slow to be able to at least multitask so music frm a free program such (slaker, pandora ect) can run in the background than hnave a super fast phone that i can only use one program at a time. For now, I'd be happy with just music running in the background. But I'm sure some apps could make use of this as well.
Wasn't this an iPhone problem at first (or current) too? Not the music, but multitasking in general?
I understand and appreciate the rationale behind the lack of multitask support for third-party apps in WP7, but I have already encountered two major inconvenient situations caused by it.
1. I can't run Messenger (which sucks for now) and browse the web or play games at the same time.
2. I'm playing a game half way, and I receive a text message. If I want to read and reply to the message, I'll have to reload the game all over again.
I do not know when or if Microsoft would support multitasking in an update, but I sure hope it will be soon. WP7 is such a sweet platform as far as development is concerned, yet the lack of third-party multitask support could be a dealbreaker for me.

[Q] [Google I/O] Music Beta not working on MT3G

The new Music Beta by Google app was leaked a few weeks ago, but it was a little buggy for me, so I was going to wait until the official release. well, it's out now, but it's not visible on my phone's market. It's visible on the web market, but my device is not listed as compatible. Requirements list froyo and up as a requirement, but nothing really else. Do you think that they're phasing out older devices again or could this just be a hiccup on the first day release?
Running
MyTouch 3G 1.2
w/ COS-DS 05062011 (2.3.4)
you could try installing it manually...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072655
It still doesn't work in landscape mode for me, but thank you for the link. It will play music and I guess I'll find out later if it will sync music. After further research, I don't think that the Magic/MyTouch line is supported by this app because of OpenGL 2.0 being needed. I may be off though.
I installed the standalone apk and it installed and works just fine for me on my HeroC. Considering that the Hero and the MT3G are almost the same phones they should work fine.
Well, they're not exactly the same and there must be a reason it doesn't show up on the market. I get a FC every time I go landscape. I know it's not important, but I just want the album coverflow to work.
I can now confirm that music sync works just fine, but I want to know why it's not working with this model.

[Q] Nexus One OpenGL 2.0

I am looking to get open gl 2.0 on my nexus one. it shows that im running 1.1 and i would like to use the new music beta. im running cyanogenmod nightlys.
any help would be wonderful im a beginner at this so please dumb it down for me.
Music Beta works fine on cyanogen without modification.
you are not able to sync with the music beta server. seeing as i got an invitation to full use music beta. even on their site it says the phone needs OpenGL 2.0.
is there any way to get this on the N1?
See if this works for you, looks like it should probably...
https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.cf3d&feature=search_result
Developer says it needs S-OFF on your HTC device.
Here it is running cleanly on the officially unsupported Nexus One:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvKGGYfM-Dg&feature=related
this works. makes music beta think you have a 2.0 device and allows you to sync your music with the cloud. now i can fully utilize Music Beta..
Best regards and many thanks!
