Hi!
Maby this is a noob question
My GF just bought the IS and is happy so far except for the symbol placed in the upper left. Showing an icon of the simcard and a settings symbol attached to it. It wont dissapear.
Do you know what it mean?
Cant find it in the manual.

/Mellon

I can't find any pics of it. But it is almost the same as the icon showing when you don't got any simcard inserted but instead of the exclamation mark next to the sim card icon there is a tiny sign looking like a cog wheel (the settings symbol).
I can't find a way to get rid of it and the phone seem to work as it should.
First I thought the sim card was too old maby. But I 'm not sure.

I assume when you drag down the status bar, i assume there is no message?
Right, I can just see the name of the provider and when clicking the name nothing happens.

Take a look @ http://androiddrawableexplorer.appspot.com/
Got this icon: 'stat_notify_sim_toolkit' ?
Here is a possible fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4187128 (just read the thread)
If that doesnt work, go to back the store and demand a new sim-card
Is it this icon: 'stat_notify_sdcard_prepare' ?
If this is the case, thats not a sim-card its the sd-card who is being prepared for use, but if you have a faulty sd-card it could hang on it. format the sd-card or use another one (after formatted) can help.
if you have this one: 'stat_sys_no_sim' The sd-card is missing, even though it is in, which should indicate that its not recognized. If this is the case, go back to the store and demand a new sim-card.

Going to send a donation to the site if this works as it'll save me money I would spend in a shop getting it fixed. I read the rules and did a search for a similar topic, but each one seemed to be slightly different from my situation, I hope this is the right area of the forum as I'm new to it.
The phone was brought from T-Mobile but I also have an O2 account that I use for work so would like to be able to switch between sims with ease. I'm a total newbie with Samsung, especially the way it works so treat my question as if you were answering a child
I'm on a mac and used the method posted on this site to unlock it and that worked (as far as I know), it said unlock successful etc but now the sim isn't recognized apart from it being on O2, and there is a symbol of a sim card with red around it and a blue circle with a line through it at the top where reception would be. What's even more worrying is that the original T-Mobile sim card is getting the same response as well.
Thanks a lot.
Try to hold it correctly as said Steve

Are you sure you fitted the sim card properly? Last month I had a blonde moment when I inserted the sim card the wrong way and wondered why I had no reception.
Also you might want to clean the contacts.

You could also check you have network settings for O2 .
Suggest it may have failed to unlock if its not the settings .
Just borrow another network sim and try that same error on sim = not unlocked .

I've tried that, but no luck. It says my sim isn't able to connect to that provider, despite it being an O2 sim that works perfectly on another phone. Or do you mean network settings that needs to be manually put into the phone?

Hah, I actually read about a few people doing this as I was searching the net for a solution but I have put it in right. I even put it in upside down just to be sure I wasn't being an idiot.

Have you checked your APN settings in your phone?
To get to the settings section, follow this path.
Settings>Wireless and Network>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names
I was going to post a link to a site that has all the U.K carrier settings, but I need a few more posts to be able to do that.
Just do a google search for each mobile carriers APN settings and manually enter the information.
I'm not sure if this will solve your problem, but it's a good place to start.
Hi
Got a little problem for a while now the first way i helped my way worket but not long so mey be one of u know how it work better.
From time to time my tab just says sim is not put in bit if i remove it it reboots cus i "removed sim" so the is be notivied. First i found out that it could be my sim cus i used in my old phone and it was hot a bit from the connectors in it and i should use a strip of "tesa" on the back so that it is better connectet. It worked for a while now the problem came back again when i driving car an its on the samsung-cardock it is sometimes gone or better the sim.
Do i have to reorder a new one or is it a prob of my tab? When it is the tab i`ll have a prob cus its rooted so no garanie
Oh and sorry for my english its not my mother language

you can just try to flash another modem if that didn't fix it , i think its problem with your tab or the simcard , did you try another simcard to check whether the problem with it or with the tab ?

no sim card or does´nt read sim card
should anyone find that they have a problem with sim card (not reading) i would strongly advise that you seriously consider that it may well be the conexion in the tab.
it was driving me crazy, but i was determined, and eventually chose to desmantel the device. where i was able to see the false conexion in the sim card holder. i tried to straighten it and it broke off, the next step would be to change the sim card hold which requires soldering (in a fairly delicate place) and i havent got a clue.at the moment i have put a bit of tin foil on the sim card (bridging) so that it connects and it is doing just fine. this post is especially for those who are certain that they have unlocked the carrier network so that they are able to rule out that cause. (sorry about the grammar).
The following post from another forum may be of interest to you in how to reinstall the call app you speak of. The poster is talking about loss of gmail application but it may apply to your situation:
Okay so after I posted this, I talked to one of my software developer friends who is also and Android freak. He told me that any application that linked to google is probably causing the problem. The only application that fit that description was Talk and talk Provider. I extracted the Talk and Talk Provider files from my .zip file, and put them in the "download" folder on the Vibrant's internal memory (NOT THE MICRO SD CARD!). Then I used the Vibrant to access this website: http://www.lysesoft.com/products/andexplorer/index.html and downloaded the "AndExplorer" file manager from the website, NOT the Android Market (remember, my android market was not working). I used AndExplorer File Manager to open and install Talk.apk and TalkProvider.apk. I also reinstalled Swype.apk. Rebooted the phone and VIOLA! Problem fixed.
Help!!!
So I had the power button failure and no electronic cleaner would fix it. I bought a broken captivate off ebay and replaced the motherboard. I had to take the daughter board off my old motherboard and place it on the new motherboard cause the old daughter board had a bend sd card holder. Turned on the phone and it had a lock on it so I did a hard reset. Now the phone turns on and seems to work great except for the fact that I have no network connection and my contacts from my sim card dont show up under my contacts. Sim card worked fine before the switch and works in my blackberry right now so I dont think its the sim card. I have re-checked all the connections and they are fine. Hopefully someone can help me with this.
Thanks!
Edit: Wifi works but still no network.
I was flashing modems on the move and got a sim lock msg on boot. Had no connection to the network. I don't know if this is the same problem but I resolved it by downloading "Galaxy S Unlock" app from the market. It's the purple computer tower/wrench icon. Hope this helps!
have no IMEI number, phone not rooted.
I put the other motherboard back in my phone until I "hopefully" figure this out. Is there a way I can copy my IMEI number from the original motherboard to the new one so it will work?
/efs folder on root has my imei backup. There might be a more specific app to deal with this. A search of the forums " EW] IMEI generator and ROM zip update" might be what you a step in the right direction. Like I mentioned I just used galaxy s unlock and it fixed everything.
(Can't post links being a noob sorry)
Guess I will have to root the phone and try this method then. Thanks
I have the same problems. The power button stopped working, then before I could get to repairing it, my wife left the phone in the sprinklers and the nothing would work. I disassembled the phone, cleaned with CRC cleaner- got it working, but with green tint to everything. Disassembled, cleaned all contacts with CRC & q-tips- got display back to normal but now it does not recognize the sim card. Card works fine on old phone though. When I get home I will check the imei #.

lol, Im in Bakersfield too. Maybe its something in the air?
I tried to root it last night with super one click but the program kept locking up and stopped responding. What are other alternatives to rooting the phone?
Mine is also missing the imei number when I look for it under phone info. What does the sim card have to do with the imei #?

when I change the sim on my note and power on, I get a message stating
"Welcome to Samsung. Your device is registered"
this message is just like when u on ur wifi and u get a notification on home or lock screen.
then I get the notification that a message was sent from my note and I was even charged for it. It doesn't even show up in logs.
also I get a message from DZ-alerts
" Dear GT-N7000 user, Thank you for your interest in being a part of Samsung Family."
I am on rooted stock 4.0.4
anyone know what it is?
Thats common i think.see if for a particular sim you have checked sim change alert in settings, ddn may be due to dat u r charging 1 rupee.
And may be in some cases, in mine too i got charged 1 rupee when i change sim.
And your device is registered and dat msg is common.

thats a different setting to send a message to a particular number about sim change. I don't have that ticked
maybe malware? any dodgy apps?

If it is the first time, it is ok.
No worries.
Try to change to ur old SIM nd get back to this new SIM. It shldnt do the same thing.
It is basically set up by the network Telco, if only first time on new SIM.
If it keeps on repeating for the same SIM evrytime u slot in, perhaps got app which is not suppose to install for personal security.

put my wifes sim card into my z1 then i got signal
Some thing wrong whit the z1?
Have googled hole day cant find a solution plesae help me?
anybody have the same problem?
Cheers Stian
Go via Warranty.
Well same happened to me at first I though was the sim reader but it was the rom that suddenly stop reading the sim and I don't know why. The solution was to flash a different rom and now I am with kitslim. To check the sim reader I used the app "sim card by gsmdev" such app allows to read the sim information like contacts imei etc so if that app reads that info means that the sim reader is OK and you need to flash a different rom or the same. Hope this help

Check if your imei is intact, perhaps you could flash an FTF file which will replace the OS so back everything up first.
Make sure you are inserting the sim correctly (i know you probably are but it's worth checking) ones the sims in the phone it should reboot, could be that the contacts which hold the sim aren't raised enough, don't bother fixing them just take it back if that's the case, if the sim has been inserted incorrectly then theres a chance that the contacts may be bent and if that's the case then your warranty will be void, but in all fairness it sounds like a dodgy phone rather than any of the above.
I'd still do the FTF flash anyway, it's probably the best shot you've got, oh and i've noticed that some peoples phones will read sims and others won't so the fact that it works in yours and not hers although weird, isn't conclusive. Try another sim too.
