[Q] Gingerbread for Captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

At one point wasnt there an internal build Gingerbread rom "leaked" from Samsung for the Galaxy S? I thought at one point I remember reading that there was. If there was, is anybody doctoring it up for the Captivate?
I'd like to go for Gingerbread on my Captivate but kind of dont want CM7, since it's stock based its too "green". I actually kind of like the samsung touchwiz based roms since they have the blue highlighting and the TW launcher isnt too bad, it looks sooooo much better than that puke green color of stock gingerbread.

There was a leak for the I9000 but since they did not release the source code it can not be ported over to the Captivate.

so far there is CM7 and Miui built off 2.3.3.. your only 2 choices so far. Neither are out of beta yet.

i believe samsung has said they will be releasing gingerbread for the galaxy s phones starting as early as next month... not that I think they can keep a date to save their lives, but they do generally follow through... eventually

just wait for a while, since others (htc, sony) will release 2.3 update pretty soon, samsung will do the same thing ...

once again, like last time. samsung released on time, but to the carriers not us. the carriers then got do decide if/and what to do with it. ATT dropped the date. not samsung.
there are already theads for the gingerbread rumor.

Vibrant and Future Proofing

Hey Guys,
I'm on the fence about buying a Vibrant and I'd love some perspective from you guys, the dev community.
I saw the Vibrant, love the screen and overall performance...however, I'm concerned about the future (6-9) months out.
The device is supposed to get Froyo..but what about Gingerbread?
How is the dev-ability of this device? Might there be a custom ROM to 1) have Froyo before Samsung 'blesses us' with it...what about Gingerbread?
Thanks guys - I'm new to this scene and appreciate your perspective.

ok...part of it was. it was a Q to the devs about the potential to put ROMs on this device.
I read on an Android blog comment that even though the phone has been rooted, that drivers are not 'in the open' so therefore ROMs would not be possible. I'm wanting to fact-check this

This is wrong. We will DEFINITELY see custom roms for this device.
I'm clapping my hands in joy and excitement
could custom ROMs include the possibility of Froyo, even before Samsung brings it 'officially'?

No definitive answer to that, but more than likely. Almost every previous device has either received a custom unreleased or early leaked android build. No worries though, we won't be waiting long for an official 2.2 dump. FYI, this device will eventually get Gingerbread. Google has already reported that all devices running a 1ghz processor will receive Gingerbread. However, don't expect that until AT LEAST the end of the year, possibly later.
I would suspect that we will start seeing Froyo roms come out between the time Samsung releases the "official" froyo rom and T-Mobile pushing said rom to the handsets.
Rooting was available for me even before i purchased the phone. Now i found out, Cyanogen Mod 6 is on the works. I believe that is froyo. Also, Clockwork recovery is as well. I believe we are in good hands. Future looks good so far being the phone out in my hands only 5 days.
ok cool. I was holding back on buying a Vibrant because I don't want to plunk down $500 bones and then have this thing be obsolete when Gingerbread comes out.
I'm still wondering the "open source" status of the driver of Vibrant. Someone said it's closed thus may affect the custom ROM progress? Can anyone elaborate on this a little bit?
CM6 for vibrant is being actively developed right now, its in an alpha0 stage, and should be finished(within a week hopefully) as for Gingerbread, I have no clue whether we will get that working on the vibrant, dont know the requirements, but since the vibrant is the fastest handset currently available, im thinking gingerbread will happen. Also we have plenty of space, plenty of ram, and a 1ghz processor, we'll be seeing dual core handsets at the end of the year/early next year, until then im happy to be getting my vibrant tomorrow shipped to me by tmobile.
some french guy already got froyo working on the galaxy s, its being worked on and will happen.
I'm also very happy tmobile has a Equiptment installment plan for me, since ive been using the G1 since October 08, im very happy to upgrade to this device

Since CM6 is froyo, we'll definitely see that before we see the official froyo rom from samsung. It'll be stock android--just like the nexus one style of look-- but at least it's android 2.2.
Once froyo (touchwiz ui) from samsung is released, we will definitely get a lot of froyo ROMs from our community, or if you're still stock then you can get the official update
Min. requirement for gingerbread.

And where would the aforementioned CM6 be?

Are there any roms better than stock for this phone?

There was such a good selection on the desire.there appears to be such a limited selection on the galaxy s...none seem that good.
Can people recommend which is best and why? Looking for a fast and stable rom.
My rom is xxjm1 by the way.
Not yet, stock is still the most trouble free for now. Won't last long though.
Its my understand (and hopefullness) that most devs FroYo. Most (if not all) are just themed and optimized roms at the moment.
We want froyo !
Yes, most devs are waiting for froyo, just because everyone will want to upgrade, and there is just no justification to make a custom rom with 2.1 just for a few weeks.
Have you not tried SamSet? Dude there are about 4 different Custom ROMs on XDA :| how can you say there are no good ones as you haven't even tried any?
Devs are waiting for FroYo and Cyanogen Mod, that'll increase the ROM majority. The Desire has FroYo (Official) AND Cyanogen Mod, so there are tons of ROMs. Stock isn't the best atm, SamSets is the best for now.

first off, 4 roms is nothing.
Secondly, setzuna or whatever he is called produced a bog standard rom for the desire.
I want quality original roms. Hopefully asop pure roms like cyanogen.
The galaxy s roms are poop at the moment.
Really...
Desire has 6month head start, also helps when the desire is clone of nexus one which is reference dev gadget so what do you expect. Have look at other latest devices that came out in last 2 months and tell me if they even have roms yet, you have been spoilt.

Agreed, ROM selection for the Hero (my last phone) were much better. I've tried HackEclair, Doc's StockRomMod and SamSet (currently the one I'm using).
From reading the forums, it really does look like all the devs are just waiting on the official Froyo release. I also read somewhere that the ROMs must be based off of official firmwares or else they won't work, which would make sense why it's difficult to get Sense-like interfaces on the phone.
Either way, it's only a few weeks - if that - until the official Froyo!

you CAN'T produce a 'bog' standard ROM for the SGS yet, It's been done for the other Galaxy S version(s) (ASOP ROM) but that's in BETA stage and some features don't even work. We have to wait for Cyanogen.
If you really want 'quality' original ROMs make them yourself. The devs here do it in their free time and aren't doing this to tailor your every suit and need, and you don't pay them for it and they do it out of sole interest. SetENZA makes ROMs because he obviously enjoys it and the challenge, and shares it with the community, and you can't compare the SGS and Desire development, they're both entirely different and the SGS is newer, meaning the Desire has more backing.
How are they 'poop' if you haven't even tested a single custom ROM?
I agree that we need more development but seriously, if you are implying that no dev is making a good custom ROM at the moment then you are VERY wrong. SamSet is the most stable one for now, DocRambone is stripped entirely so check his ROMs out. You need to read up a bit more, we all know that there is slow ROM development and for a REASON.
Hurry up Sammy.

hi,
Please don't make these assumptions. I have tried a couple of the roms and am back to my original stock rom now because none of them seem better than it.
I also wasn't suggesting that people weren't making roms or that things won't get better. I am just disappointed its taking a long time. I had good 2.1 roms within a month of me having a desire, asop 2.2 within 2 months.
Anyhow, the roms have a long way to go it seems... They aren't the best at the moment but I'm sure they will be great soon enough.

Yeah but with patience we will see a fair share of ROMs in the next month, i guess these things take time, the Desire did get pretty popular though as it is HTC and Samsung is known for being crap with updates, but now the SGS is getting better and slowly it will overtake the Desire, i assure you.

Disagreed.
Yes, Samsung has been crap in the past but with this phone they're pushing a lot out. We are yet to see how they respond to the Froyo update and how they maintain it, so you may be right, but i think that in this case Samsung will release it and *hopefully* maintain it, if not then XDA is here to maintain all phones, of course
HD2 has potential for Android as it's been ported, but WinMo is horrible and the Sense interface just makes it that little bit better, so glad i ditched WinMo for Android. Desire is awesome but the inferior screen and sensitivity made me get the SGS because the hardware is just that little bit better

[Q] Alternate ROMs

When is there going to be any alternate ROMs to run on the Captivate?
All I see are samsung ROMs that can be loaded on the Captivate, and they're all loaded up with crappy samsung touchwiz. Whether its "Cognition" or JF6 or JH7 or JI6, etc. the fact remains that these are all crappy samsung ROMs. Where's all the "openness" that I hear the pro-android crowd pumping day in and day out?
I guess I dont understand much about android, but why is it impossible to just load a purely stock version of the OS on the phone and have it run? I hate touchwiz. I hate the bluetooth stack that samsung put on the phone (no WII-mote gaming). I hate the absolutely ridiculous file system that samsung uses. I hate the fact that it takes 20 seconds to open up the phone dialer.
My dialer opens instantly and i like touchwiz.
But the 2.1 sources are there, if someone wants to build a generic 2.1 they can. I guess if someone really wanted it, they would build it.
It sounds like you would like to commission someone to build a Stock Android 2.1 build for the Captivate. You could try to motivate someone with a cash bounty.
Why not search the forum and see what is available for the phone instead of complaining. Roms are available that remove touchwiz and boatwear. Or get a phone that would suit you more since learning about android and the captivate don't work well for you.

Yea, I would love a stock 2.1 or 2.2. Someone in the developer forum tried building an AOSP 2.1 but they stopped. They put out a version 0.1 and it had so much wrong with it, it was worthless. Things like having voice while on a call or being able to use data are pretty important things on a smartphone.

Also there are i9000 reorient roms you can run
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app and aosp beta 3 froyo
The devs are working on a Froyo AOSP rom. I'm sure it will be finalized and released for general consumption once the 2.2 source code is released.
You won't see any "true" AOSP builds until the devs can get the source from Samsung and find out how intertwined TW is integrated with the OS.
So you can flash to what is available currently or wait till early 2011 for the "final" ROMS to start coming out of the woodwork. Samsung announced that 2.2 is slowly rolling out to all Samsung Galaxy S devices this Oct... in Europe - so I don't think the Captivate crowd will see the update until late Nov/Dec of this year.
I know Design Gears is attempting to build one that is as close as your going to get to one right now. He almost has a "stable" build going but it is still being tweaked.
But.. the latest 2.2 Cognition build currently has TW removed and Launcher Pro installed. It isn't perfect but it is close to what you are looking for. I prefer .6 and kept TW on as the phone seems to rely on it pretty heavily for functionality. Only issue I get is a lag spike here and there but otherwise it runs great.

[Q] The Future Of i9000 ?

The i9000 is a year old, (and still is the best android phone in most markets)
it came with android 2.1 , we got 2.2 , we will get 2.3 in , lets say about 1 month , wright when 2.4 will be released.
I think samsung will eventually release a 2.4 firmware maybe in june - july but then "ice cream" will be released
So what do you guys think , we will ever see "ice cream 3.x'' officially on the i9000 , or gingerbread will the the end of the line ?
Yes, i think we will, and if we dont, we will kick up a fuss and demand it from samsung lol
or we could just wait for someone to port it from another ROM, android hacking will never die !!!!
My guess is that 2.3, maybe with a patch or two, will be the last thing that Samsung does for the i9000. I don't think there is in their interest to support a phone older than 18 months, as they probably rely on statistics. And the statistics tells them that you and me probably have bought a new phone by then.
true i suppose.
If ice cream ever did come out for the SGS is probably wouldnt be for a while, and yea me and you probably would have a new phone, so we wouldnt be on the i9000 forums to find out if it was released.
but im happy with cyanogenMod, and as long as that always gets frequent updates, il stick to this til i get a new device

Very True
Like any device the manufactures have to drop support from it at some point! I think we will see Android 2.3.3, which from ports does run smooth on this phone and then afterwards just the normal updates we see floating around for 2.2.1 etc..
Then again there are loads of adverts for the Galaxy S still on the TV so I suppose in reality we will just have to wait and see.
I really cant see us going to 2.4. I suppose someone like Darky or DOC might come up with a 2.4 ROM for the SGS in the future but who knows! I think at this stage I will be happy when a ROM comes out with fully functional 2.3.
What about the Galaxy S II. Is that a better phone than the I9000?

How could they?they aren't developers(afaik) they both need a rom as a base if sammy doesn't release one they can't mod it.
Since there is a cyanogenmod projekt for the sgs now we will propably get updates for a while because it is based in many parts on nexus s source.
So if you make the jump to cm you will propably (if they make it to the mainline) see ice cream or whatever the next updates are called

I don't think samsung will give up on the phone that increased their market! I mean 10 million units is not exatly a couple of phones...

Android 2.3.x is the last for Gingerbread going to be released for the i9000.
However, due to the large numbers of i9000 devices within the market, and still being sold, Samsung have no option but to release an upgrade to Ice-Cream Sandwich (Android 4.x.x).
There will be no 2.4 for Android, it goes straight to 4 (Ice-Cream Sandwich).
Because Android cannot sustain development for both 2.x.x and 3.x.x concurrently, it makes sense to release the "co-op" version for both smartphones and tablets.
Rumour has it, this version will be released end of October, first for Samsung Nexus Prime.
So November seems to be a good enough guess for the rest to follow suite.
Note: if you don't like waiting for upgrades in your country, and your device is already a year old, just install/flash a stock ROM released for a different country (closest to yours...check GSMA for technology standards if you're really worried). Also, if there is a big difference in GSMA standards, you can still flash a ROM of your choice and then use your current Modem, e.g. flash JVR update on your phone, then flash the modem for previous working version for your country.
I am from India and it's bleak in a way. The android bug hasn't really caught on here. We are severely crippled. We did not get an official Nexus. We got the Galaxy S II, the prices of GT9000 have dropped. But still no one goes for it. People here are still caught up in the iphone bug. I think Samsung will pull the plug soon to make their other phones sell.

HTC phones blow for battery life and signal. (Take it from someone who has been down that road many times with different OS)
THE SGS2 is zippier with the processor and RAM, but goes through the battery faster.
Your best bet is really one of two options:
Keep the SGS and grab a Samsung Armani battery. Its 1650mah (same physical size as stock) which makes up for any custom fast kernal battery loss versus stock.
Or
Get a Motorola Atrix which has the power of the SGS2 minus the screen but at least has the battery.
Unless you can wait a little while longer and see the ICS phones coming this fall for even more options...

When are we get gingerbread back??

I haven't even heard any rumors about expected re-release date for gingerbread.
I was sure we were gonna get our gb back within two to three weeks, but my faith is fading very rapidly now.
Some people are expecting mid-May for re-release.
What you guys reckon?
I reckon G00glez took their G1ng3rbr3ads back and are not going to release it again until 24 hours goes by without someone creating a thread and asking about it.
In all honesties, I'm patient as long as it's rock solid.

Patent Infringements? Seriously?
Unless there is a court order restraining Google from distributing Android, which there is NOT nor will there be in the future in my opinion, there is no way they would have pulled the release based on patent issues, which are never ending anyway for all companies these days. Also, GB HAS been released for other devices, including the Nexus S.
I would say it is far more likely to have been due to carrier integration problems, or that they recalled it to fix a relatively minor issue, such as the camera fix that was rumored, and the fix ended up breaking something else, and fixing that killed the wifi and so on and so on.
As it is JVB seemed a bit underdone for a final release. Hopefully we will get a better version all around, once they get around to putting it back in Kies. Could happen tomorrow, could happen next month....who knows. In the mean time, several of the custom versions are maturing nicely and the Kitchen is soon to move GB from beta to mainstream...so be happy and try those.
Samsung apps is offering an update. No serious change, but might be a sign for rerelease.

AFAIK that was debunked.
Nobody knows
I haven't heard any truly plausible reasons for taking Gingerbread of Kies again. I am currently running the Kies version (JVB) of Gingerbread and compared to the earlier Samsung releases the JVB is a dream to run on.
Yes there may be bugs in it, though I personally haven't run into to any yet, but all of the official realeses I have run so far, has had bugs in them, so no change there.
The only reason I can see to hold it back is that they are waiting until the SGS2 to come to market, so they don't have to compete with there own product.
Thats my two cents.
Small update
I can tell you that the official release date of the SGS2 from one of the major carriers in denmark (TDC) is week 19 (the 9th to the 15th of may), which accidentally coinsides with the releasedate of branded Gingerbread on the SGS in Scandinavia.
