[Q] Data drop on 3G/H with perfect connection - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bleh, I'm getting desperate here, looks like I'm the only one experiencing this.
This seems to applies to any modem I've tried so far on 2.2.1 roms. I get excellent reception (3-4 bars H or 3G) and yet data doesn't flow through in some areas while still maintaining that excellent connection. Usually fails more when I am indoor although again, the reception is in theory great.
Seems to be happening more often when I'm using 850 band but that's not really an indicator. I tried JL2, KC1, JQ1 and JPG (all worked on 850 no problem) but I still experienced the same data issue. Flashed various Doc rom (now on his latest 2.2.1 with SpeedMod K13e kernel).
Could it be my SIM card that's damaged ? I've been experiencing this for a long time but I remember the phone being ok when I first got Froyo on it and definitely ok with 2.1
Any ideas ?

Just stumbled on Roger's Captivate "latest" modem CWM flashable, UXJL1. Would it be a good idea to try and flash this one ?

Help with signal

I keep losing my 3G at work where it used to be full bars all day. Now it seems to be one or two bars and it drops to 2G most of the day now
I flashed the new radio but have now gone back to 26I as I thought it could be that. I am on Cyan's latest - reflashed after a full wipe.
What could be causing this? It seems no matter where I am the 3G signal is dropped throughout the day.
Has to be the radio or ROM?
Could it be the APN settings?
Is this a rom specific issue?
I don't know if it's a ROM issue or not. I haven't seen any faults in the cyanogen thread about this...

AT&T Constant roaming

I have the AT&T Captivate and got it about a month ago. With stock rom I am never roaming at home and get 3-5 bars always while with different roms I've tried are Phoenix 4.1, Perception 10.2, Cognition 3.2 and Serendipity 4.3 and usually only get 1-2 bars max so phone always goes to roaming on T-Mobile which I can't do data then. I have tried going in and selecting to use AT&T network but once I leave the house I get same issue and then it locks out voice till I set it to another tower. Is there any recommended settings I should do?
I also did just replace the SIM card and that helped a couple other issues I had but still get same roaming issue with it. I have not tried flashing a new modem to any of the roms, since always seeing stuff of use JK3, JK4 etc.
With the old Tilt2 phone using Energy Rom software I never had reception issues using latest radio for that.
Try flashing the modem. The 2 i recomend are ugjl2 and nkp1. I have run into the same issues with various modems. If you can flash a rom, a modem will be a piece of cake. Will attach in a few
I'm having this problem too. Tried loading JL2 and KP1 (2 different versions) and still roaming. Beyond that, getting some random call silences and drops. Guess I'll be loading random modem drivers until I find a good one.
EDIT: I just figured out how to make roaming turn off. I'm in a GSM-only area. I went into the phone app, typed *#2263#, chose GSM, then chose 850 only. It took a second but then picked up a great ATT signal. For some reason, the phone was preferring to roam on 1900 (seen using *#0011#). Not sure what effect this will have if I go somewhere else, but I work from home so my location is pretty static.

[Q] Fringe area modem? Dont care about data.

Is there any modems that seem to work better in areas of poor reception?
I frequently loose signal or can only receive texts but not reply to them in Southern Utah. This is even on the I-15 corridor that supposedly has coverage all the way. Heaven forbid I drive off-road and need to use my phone with reliability.
Obviously with that kind of reception I am not going to be doing any web surfing, but it would be nice to be able to reply to the texts when they manage to get through. I don't mind flashing a new modem when needed, I understand sometimes the trade off is power/range versus battery life. I carry two spare batteries anyway.
Coming from a WinMo phone we would have all sorts of radio options. I gather in Android they are called modems and the options seem more limited?
Anyways, any advice on a particular modem that works well in fringe areas?
I am running Firebird2 kernel so I believe I need to stick with a I9000 compatible modem? Currenty I use the UGJK4.
Really? Nobody uses their Captivate as a phone?
I have downloaded KP1 and JL2 and will try them this weekend I think, but I cant be the only one living in BFE that has this snazzy phone.
Someone may be interested in my test so far so i will continue to talk to myself here.
I switched from the JK4 to the JL2 modem and have had a dramatic difference in signal bars. I now get a bar or two at the ski resort base where as before I never had anything. It reads 'emergency calls only' instead of 'no service'.
I still cant send any texts out and am unsure if I would be able to receive any. I think the phone needs to ping both ways to get a text.
I am unsure if the 'signal bars' mean anything about the sensitivity of the modem but its interesting that I get them now.
Next time I will try the KP1 modem for the weekend.
Im in southwest USA and the UGL2 modem works wonders for me.
what about the battery for jl2 and jk4, can you compare them as well?

Just a word of advice, make sure you check the actual signal strength (db) because bars can lie badly. The only reason I say this is because it "says" you have more bars but you still can't text sounds kinda like you're getting an over exaggerated bar signal strength.
Just my .02

Is there a *# code that will read out your actual signal strenght? I have SGS Tools installed and can use it to get to that information if you know were its at?

I carry 2 spare batteries and swap them out as needed so I am not sure about battery life. At the ski resort it pretty bad but probably due to the constant wifi usage more than anything.

You can get your signal strength (measured in dBm, so you want a lower number) in Settings, About Phone, Status.
The service mode accessed via *#0011# will also show you that signal strength, as well as some more info. (RSCP, received signal code power, corresponds to signal strength in the Status menu above.)
Good luck.
sgs tools provides more than information... Its a shortcut to all your hardware codes. I'm in batch 1007 and when I flash stock ---> custom rom... I always have Data issues. JK4 modem Serendipity Speedmod... Toggle my bands and for some weird reason my WAP jumps from stock New York WAP to a more local WAP (Kansas or Chicago) and my Data goes wild (latency lowers dramatically and speeds return to normal)... Otherwise my phone is a paper weight.
So I flashed the ZNKP1 modem this weekend and tried it out. It seems about the same as the last modem. However I did notice something interesting with it.
At the lodge I get full bars and no service! It will hook up to what I assume is the tmobile network? The signal shows -95dbm and 6 asu but the service state says out of service.
I am guessing that might be why I can get signal bars on some of the lifts but be unable to send or receive calls or texts.
I had been under the impression that the signal bars were only for networks that were usable but I guess that is not really the case.
Is this a function of the modem not being stock or is it always going to pick up and show unusable signals?

I've tried and tested just about every modem, and I always come back to JK3. For me it has the best battery life and reception. GPS is also important for me, so this one seems to do the trick (with Adam's GPS fix).
JL2
The new JL2 modem works best for me, drops less calls than JK4
and consitantly has more bars.
Also my gps works better with JL2, my captivate is revision 1007
I switched my ROM to Cog 4.1 so I will have to see how it works for me at the resort next time I go.
But does anyone have any clue about the signal bars indication I mentioned? Full bars but on the wrong network?
Is that something I have never noticed before, or something to do with flashing different modems?

3G connectivity issues. All ROMs

For quite some time now, my phone has been having some terrible 3G connectivity issues.
It just drops from HDSPA to UMTS and gives me no data for chunks of time. And every now and then, the entire 3G turns off(as if the APN has been switched).
This has been occurring with MIUI 2.2, MIUI 2.3, CM6 and CM7.
Im using 5.12.00.08 radio (latest i think). Im unsure what HBOOT I'm running, but the full baseband version is "32.50.99.32U_5.12.00.08". So i think I'm running HBOOT 32 but im not sure. With the CM and MIUI roms the problem was occurring on stock kernels and monk's.
Any ideas on what could be causing the issues? If you would like me to send logcats i can(i haven't seen anything in there to indicate any issues)...
Also i found a post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931728
Not sure if thats related.
Seemingly the problem started occouring after i was using alot with WiFi Tethering with Wireless Tether by Lemons and co.
I'm using Virgin Mobile AU as carrier.
Also, the problems occurs before installing ANY apps as well(and afterwards obviously).
32.50.99.32U_5.12.00.08
mine is only 32.50.00.32U... IMO just try flashing a new radio, start with 5.08 instead of 5.12 and see if that works then if you are content then leave it... else flash 5.12 after and try to root out the problem...
cheers!
The default setting in nexus one is WCDMA preferred... i.e. it connects to 3G if available.
If the signal strength of the 3G network is lower than than 2G network,
it switches to 2G rather than connecting via 3G.
However, Its a known limitation that Nexus one 3G reception is comparatively less due to physical properties of the antenna.

i9000 cannot make or receive calls. modem problem?

Hi everyone, noob here so dun wanna start a new thread with my question since it is related to this matter and I was wondering if anyone can help me because I really can't figure it out anymore.
I have an International GT-i9000 purchased with Hong Kong and system specs I have running are
Gingerbread.ZSJW4 (recently flashed the official ROM from Hong Kong cuz I am anal and want to keep the same languages)
Kernal: 2.6.35.7-I9000ZSJW4-CL1147074
[email protected] #2
Bandbase version: i9000ugkg3
And I use AT&T in New York (I know, worse plan to use in dead zone capital of the US)
I had flashed the ugkg3 modem on it because the JW1 modem that was with the official ROM wasn't working out for me and I had heard this modem was the best for my area. Before it would either not pick up a signal when coming up from underground or the signal just go dead, which did not happen when my phone was on Froyo (on Froyo I did not have 850mhz enabled and it worked alright outside and sometimes in the house)
At first, the KG3 modem worked wonderfully, I was able to receive data in my house and was on 3 bars (compared to none to one before). However, I now notice that while I do have full bars, I cannot receive or send messages or phone calls (even though my brother's Note is able to do all that and it was next to my phone).
I also happens when I am outside as well.
The other day I was standing in front of the AT&T store near where I am and I still don't pick up a signal.
Or it would lose the signal and never pick it up again.
Unless if I really can't use 850mhz on my phone, which does not make sense because AT&T uses 850mhz.
I am real hesistant to try another modem, and I cannot figure out if it is a hardware issue or network issue, or is it just the wrong modem?
Can someone please share any insight?

my other question is, phone is not ICS, and I found the nexus S one...will it still work?
and can I just extract out modem.bin and flash via ODIN ?(somehow my phone won't do CMW recovery...)
