AT&T Constant roaming - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the AT&T Captivate and got it about a month ago. With stock rom I am never roaming at home and get 3-5 bars always while with different roms I've tried are Phoenix 4.1, Perception 10.2, Cognition 3.2 and Serendipity 4.3 and usually only get 1-2 bars max so phone always goes to roaming on T-Mobile which I can't do data then. I have tried going in and selecting to use AT&T network but once I leave the house I get same issue and then it locks out voice till I set it to another tower. Is there any recommended settings I should do?
I also did just replace the SIM card and that helped a couple other issues I had but still get same roaming issue with it. I have not tried flashing a new modem to any of the roms, since always seeing stuff of use JK3, JK4 etc.
With the old Tilt2 phone using Energy Rom software I never had reception issues using latest radio for that.

Try flashing the modem. The 2 i recomend are ugjl2 and nkp1. I have run into the same issues with various modems. If you can flash a rom, a modem will be a piece of cake. Will attach in a few

I'm having this problem too. Tried loading JL2 and KP1 (2 different versions) and still roaming. Beyond that, getting some random call silences and drops. Guess I'll be loading random modem drivers until I find a good one.
EDIT: I just figured out how to make roaming turn off. I'm in a GSM-only area. I went into the phone app, typed *#2263#, chose GSM, then chose 850 only. It took a second but then picked up a great ATT signal. For some reason, the phone was preferring to roam on 1900 (seen using *#0011#). Not sure what effect this will have if I go somewhere else, but I work from home so my location is pretty static.

Modem Roaming Message

I've run into a pretty weird problem that no one else seems to have. No matter what ROM and kernel I run, as long as I run the TLJL3 modem, I get a roaming message. And since I have data roaming turned off, I basically can't use data. Now you can say turn on data roaming, but then I still have the roaming notification.
Running any other modem doesn't give me this problem, such as my current UGJL2 modem. Does anyone know why I'm getting this problem? TLJL3 and UGJL2 are the most popular modems atm and I'd like to use TLJL3 as I'm hoping it'll be better than my current UGJL2 modem experience.
I have another question. I went to the States for a same day shopping trip, and got my bill just now. Despite having data roaming turned off and packet data turned on, I got charged like $2 for data roaming? Wth happened? There shouldn't be any data usage on the phone when I was in the States...
I was on stock Rogers firmware at the time too.
Update: It seems that certain modems give me a roaming message. I'm getting a roaming message on KP1 modem as well as TLJL3. It'd be nice if there is a workaround or fix besides just ignoring it and enabling data roaming.
Update: Seems that while some people with a Rogers Captivate get the roaming message, others don't. I seriously got no idea what's going on. See latest post for details.

It shouldn't cause any problems. I've had data roaming turned off before with my captivate running older versions of cognition before and no charges came out. I've had roaming on JL3 modem as well, but honestly it's not a biggie. Just ignore it.
All rights then.

Well if you were in the States and you used your phone, you obviously will get roaming charges. The reason it didn't work is probably the phone thought that it belongs in the States to begin with. If you don't want any charges, it's always best to just have your phone in airplane mode when in another country.

That's the weird thing. I didn't use it when I was in the states... I can't put it on airplane mode though just in case my dad calls and stuff. Data roaming is disabled and I don't have american apn either.
As for the roaming message with the TLJL3, I flashed it at home meaning I am in canada.

Same for me. I have a SGH-i896 Captivate and I'm a Fido user and when I use JL3 or KP1 modem I have the roaming message. It is annoying, but never been charged for this. I had a HTC Hero before and had the same "issue".
I know it's not a big deal, but having the R over the reception signal is bothering me. I'd like to get rid of it if it's possible.
this may sound a bit too simplistic, but if only those modems are the cause (meaning other modems don't give you this "issue"), why not just flash a different modem?
Well like everyone else, we want to see which modem gives us the best performance and battery life. It's said that TLJL3, UGJL2, and KP1 are the best modems right now, and we can't really experiemnt with the other two modems because they give us roaming messages, which is annoying and kills our data as we have data roaming turned off. Yes it's not a huge problem, but it is a problem nonetheless.
try jk4, it's the other good modem. I've have had data roaming problems with jl3 while using Darky's Rom, but the problems went away after I started using serendipity and doc's. of course, YMMV.
one more thing: if you have a rom with the extended power menu (ie, you can go to the power menu and select recovery or download), then go there, and turn off data network and it won't use data until you turn it back on.
Wait, the roaming message just went away when using another ROM? How'd that work? Because using Perception, Cognition, and Serendipity ROMs, I get the roaming message with TLJL3 and KP1 modems.
Yea I used to turn off data network mode thinking it'd revert to GSM mode. Turns out it didn't...

Been using JK4 for a few days now and so far, the reception is more or less the same as UGJL2. However, the last time I tested data speeds, it was a lot slower than UGJL2.
I still haven't figured out why I was getting the roaming message before, but it seems like some people with a Rogers Captivate using ZNKP1 modem don't have the same problem as me. He's running Cognition too, just like I was before I flash to Serendipity. See posts here and here.
Got a new Fido SIM card and I'm still getting the roaming message with certain modems. I've completely given up now.
My approach to fixing this, maybe it might help you

I've just upgraded to Serendipity 7 and was having the same roaming issue message that you have. I am also using a fido sim card, ahaha.
I was able to fix the issue by using the JK4 modem, the same one used in Firefly 3.0 (Rogers based rom). So far it is working great for me, no issues with calls or data and the roaming message is now gone
~ I attached the modem file I used. Just put the file on to the root of your phone and install it as a .zip in CWM Recovery and you're good to go!

[Q] Fringe area modem? Dont care about data.

Is there any modems that seem to work better in areas of poor reception?
I frequently loose signal or can only receive texts but not reply to them in Southern Utah. This is even on the I-15 corridor that supposedly has coverage all the way. Heaven forbid I drive off-road and need to use my phone with reliability.
Obviously with that kind of reception I am not going to be doing any web surfing, but it would be nice to be able to reply to the texts when they manage to get through. I don't mind flashing a new modem when needed, I understand sometimes the trade off is power/range versus battery life. I carry two spare batteries anyway.
Coming from a WinMo phone we would have all sorts of radio options. I gather in Android they are called modems and the options seem more limited?
Anyways, any advice on a particular modem that works well in fringe areas?
I am running Firebird2 kernel so I believe I need to stick with a I9000 compatible modem? Currenty I use the UGJK4.
Really? Nobody uses their Captivate as a phone?
I have downloaded KP1 and JL2 and will try them this weekend I think, but I cant be the only one living in BFE that has this snazzy phone.
Someone may be interested in my test so far so i will continue to talk to myself here.
I switched from the JK4 to the JL2 modem and have had a dramatic difference in signal bars. I now get a bar or two at the ski resort base where as before I never had anything. It reads 'emergency calls only' instead of 'no service'.
I still cant send any texts out and am unsure if I would be able to receive any. I think the phone needs to ping both ways to get a text.
I am unsure if the 'signal bars' mean anything about the sensitivity of the modem but its interesting that I get them now.
Next time I will try the KP1 modem for the weekend.
Im in southwest USA and the UGL2 modem works wonders for me.
what about the battery for jl2 and jk4, can you compare them as well?

Just a word of advice, make sure you check the actual signal strength (db) because bars can lie badly. The only reason I say this is because it "says" you have more bars but you still can't text sounds kinda like you're getting an over exaggerated bar signal strength.
Just my .02
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
Is there a *# code that will read out your actual signal strenght? I have SGS Tools installed and can use it to get to that information if you know were its at?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
I carry 2 spare batteries and swap them out as needed so I am not sure about battery life. At the ski resort it pretty bad but probably due to the constant wifi usage more than anything.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
You can get your signal strength (measured in dBm, so you want a lower number) in Settings, About Phone, Status.
The service mode accessed via *#0011# will also show you that signal strength, as well as some more info. (RSCP, received signal code power, corresponds to signal strength in the Status menu above.)
Good luck.
sgs tools provides more than information... Its a shortcut to all your hardware codes. I'm in batch 1007 and when I flash stock ---> custom rom... I always have Data issues. JK4 modem Serendipity Speedmod... Toggle my bands and for some weird reason my WAP jumps from stock New York WAP to a more local WAP (Kansas or Chicago) and my Data goes wild (latency lowers dramatically and speeds return to normal)... Otherwise my phone is a paper weight.
So I flashed the ZNKP1 modem this weekend and tried it out. It seems about the same as the last modem. However I did notice something interesting with it.
At the lodge I get full bars and no service! It will hook up to what I assume is the tmobile network? The signal shows -95dbm and 6 asu but the service state says out of service.
I am guessing that might be why I can get signal bars on some of the lifts but be unable to send or receive calls or texts.
I had been under the impression that the signal bars were only for networks that were usable but I guess that is not really the case.
Is this a function of the modem not being stock or is it always going to pick up and show unusable signals?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
I've tried and tested just about every modem, and I always come back to JK3. For me it has the best battery life and reception. GPS is also important for me, so this one seems to do the trick (with Adam's GPS fix).
JL2
The new JL2 modem works best for me, drops less calls than JK4
and consitantly has more bars.
Also my gps works better with JL2, my captivate is revision 1007
I switched my ROM to Cog 4.1 so I will have to see how it works for me at the resort next time I go.
But does anyone have any clue about the signal bars indication I mentioned? Full bars but on the wrong network?
Is that something I have never noticed before, or something to do with flashing different modems?

[Q]Odd signal issue

Ok, so I know it's not the csc, or the rom, or the apn settings, or the modem, or the band selection. It's not an app, or even a signal issue. It's not the service or network selection. Wiping didn't help nor did a factory reset. Every time my phone connects to an edge network, it won't connect to an hsdpa network without me going into settings, wireless and network, mobile networks, wcdma only and then back to gsm and wcdma. Any suggestions?
Anyone that comes up with a half-way decent suggestion gets a Thank You....
I'm guessing that no one has come across this before? It's not like it won't connect to HSDPA, it's just that it won't connect automatically. Believe me when I say, I've searched samsunggalaxysforum, google, and xda for a solution so I don't think this is a problem that has been posted here as of yet. Forgive me if it is and lead me to it....
Bump.
I don't think enough people have seen it before it slips into the nether regions of the forum.
I changed HSDPA revision to option 2 in band selection (HSDPA/no HSUPA). It worked off of airplane mode, which it hadn't done before but the same issue persists. When I get to work (where there is a clear HSDPA signal) from home (also clear HSDPA) it's on EDGE. During travel or when the HSDPA signal is not available, it'll just stay on that **** EDGE network even when I get to an HSDPA area.
Same problem on a clean stock rom ???
jje
Come to think of it, I'm not sure. HSDPA is new where I live but not where I work. I did, however, do a repartition in Odin of the JS3 firmware and then a wipe with Darky's 9.2 and 9.3. Of course I didn't really stick with JS3 for very long before flashing to Darky's ROM but this isn't a problem inherent in the ROM itself or others would have reported it. Furthermore, I've switched between kernels, file systems and modems and yet the problem persists. I haven't enabled any tweaks with any kernel I've used either so that shouldn't be an issue, should it?
Maybe try this.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* ->
Go to Phone Information -> and perhaps play with the Preferred network type?
If noen of your efforts have resulted in anything meaningful, the suspicion goes to your operator.
Hope this helps.
i have the exact same issue although 3G is available in my area when it once logs into edge mode it doesnt wanna change it. only when i restart the phone it logs onto 3G again.
pretty annoying
maik
You can go into wireless and settings, network settings, wcdma only, and then back to wcdma and gsm and it'll connect to 3g or H. At least that way you don't have to restart the phone every time it does it. The main thing is finding out what can fix the issue.
For some reason, the phone information settings don't stick. I've tried to use wcdma preferred but it just goes right back. The other code settings, on the other hand, work just fine.

I'm wondering if it may be a sim card problem rather then a phone problem. I'm thinking I should try my girlfriend's sim. I'll report back when I see if that's the problem. It'll be after work though so feel free to come up with other suggestions. I plan to do a write up in general, [resolved] if we figure out the problem so people with this issue can know what to do.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Not the sim. I also contacted my service provider to get a push of their latest update with tower location, it's not prl on gsm it's id-something-something. No change there really as far as the signal issue goes. I also checked my provider website just to see how much data I had used, not even close to the cap on unlimited.
I think i'll have to try a flash on odin with repartition to a stock firmware and then work my way back to see what may have caused the problem. It's a shame, really since everything else on the phone works phenomenally, it just won't auto connect to hsdpa which is spotty in my home and work area so it's a bigger pain in the neck then it needs to be if it won't switch between the two on it's own.

[Q] Data drop on 3G/H with perfect connection

Bleh, I'm getting desperate here, looks like I'm the only one experiencing this.
This seems to applies to any modem I've tried so far on 2.2.1 roms. I get excellent reception (3-4 bars H or 3G) and yet data doesn't flow through in some areas while still maintaining that excellent connection. Usually fails more when I am indoor although again, the reception is in theory great.
Seems to be happening more often when I'm using 850 band but that's not really an indicator. I tried JL2, KC1, JQ1 and JPG (all worked on 850 no problem) but I still experienced the same data issue. Flashed various Doc rom (now on his latest 2.2.1 with SpeedMod K13e kernel).
Could it be my SIM card that's damaged ? I've been experiencing this for a long time but I remember the phone being ok when I first got Froyo on it and definitely ok with 2.1
Any ideas ?
Just stumbled on Roger's Captivate "latest" modem CWM flashable, UXJL1. Would it be a good idea to try and flash this one ?

Can't connect the 3g networks

They just rolled 3g into my small Michigan town and all of my friends are able to pick it up but my phone only has a little 'E' instead of '3g' by the data bars. I notice when I go into my options the options 'use only 2g networks' is always ticked, even if I untick it, it'll magically come back. I don't remember installing any apps that would mess with that as I'm running a fresh, new version of cyanogen 7.
I've never been on CM, but I remember reading that people had troubles with HSUPA on CM. I think it had to do with making sure it was enabled before flashing CM7. I would suggest going back to stock, verifying you have 3g, then re-flashing CM.
Sent from my Cappy
Even when I was on stock, or any other ROM for that matter 3g wouldn't work.
Then contact ATT, if you are sure it doesn't work on stock. If that phone has less than 1 year they probablyy will replace
