need alt ways to get into recovery other than adb and holding down the volume keys.
i bricked my captivate using the odin one click recovery going from the i900 rom to stock. odin had froze and i restarted trying again only to see the phone and computer screen.
sorry a bit frustrated ....ask all the questions u need
Here's what got me out of a jam...
mattonline said:
1) Remove the battery
2) Remove the SIM
3) Reinsert the battery
4) Run ODIN (Note: I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 so I ran ODIN in Administrator mode by right-clicking on the file in Explorer and choosing the 'Run As Administrator' option. I would suggest doing this to make sure you have no permissions issues with the program.)
5) Depress both the up and down volume buttons on the phone at the same time
6) While you are depressing both the up and down volume buttons, plug in the USB cable.
No need to depress the power button or do anything else. The phone should go right into Download mode with the little yellow construction guy.
Then ODIN will see the COM port you are connecting with and you can just click Start.

I'm not so sure that it's not brickable, I'm pretty sure I bricked mine...
I was trying to load the international galaxy s 2.2 rom using odin 3 and for some reason I got stuck in recovery mode and could do nothing (this was after it finished loading the rom). I couldn't make it go to the download mode. Anything I did just took me right back to recovery.
I'd really love to know what you guys would have done, I'm new to android the captivate is my first.
Thanks in advance for your input.
By the way, I was talking it through with a buddy and we came up with a possible cause. I was rooted when I tried loading the 2.2 rom. Would that have bricked it?

Odin is one tricky SOB.
Why can't Vibrant users be this helpful?

can i tell you how good god is?
so over at androidforums by djgibbsjr
his words....
i did the same thing thing initially, no big deal, battery pull and while the phone is off hold volume key and power, ...
GUYS.......all i needed to do was hold down the volume key not both
Yes, the buttons are different if you attempted to flash a Galaxy S rom, the typical button hold will not work.

Hey guys, if you are stuck on that phone+!+computer screen, do this to get into download mode!!
1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3(you must open odin3 before you start or it won't flash. Do NOT put your sim or sd card back in).
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black and return to that horrible screen.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the voldown and volup.
note: THE STUPID SCREEN IS NOW FIXED!!

that is EXACTLY what got my phone out of the certain brick situation i thought i was in this morning. i had been trying for hours, every combination imagineable from the vibrant/galaxy s forums. odin3 had shut down on me twice mid process so everything was SEVERELY screwed. i did that combination and the very first time it caught and installed now my phone works perfect. ended up sending designgears a donation based on that post alone. thanks dude!

I did have my phone plugged into power when I was trying the button push combos.
I didn't, however, try holding down just the volume button so I can't know for sure if that could have worked.
Since I was within the 30 day window I just took it back to at&t and they gave me a new one. I'm too chicken to try loading the 2.2 rom again. I really want to, but I can't afford a $500 brick...

AT&T replaced it without question? Interesting...
Edit: Well, now that I think about it, the guy that sold me mine was pretty clueless about it. I had to show him how to remove the battery cover, despite the printed "ILLUSTRATED" instructions stuck to the cover.
There's going to be a lot of refurbished captivates hitting the market soon.

So, I didn't brick it... I did the same thing with my replacement phone but this time I was patient enough to actually figure out how to fix it.

So I can't get any button combo to work, and all I get is White AT&T screen (if unplugged) and a frozen loading screen(if plugged into usb). Any ideas?
I think I have the same problem.
Used Odin one click to flash stock rom and then tried to flash JH7, but had some troubles with odin when trying flashing... tried to reboot the phone by pulling out the battery and now I can't turn it on, just have an image on the screen: Phone has troubles with connecting to PC and that's it...
oh yeah, that helped me:
1. Remove battery & usb
2. Open odin.
3. Plug in usb.
4. Hold vol down.
5. Put battery in.

Me 2 about the battery cover! Lol they let just anybody work at these stores. All they know about these phones is what's printed on that little card. Every now and again you'll find someone that cares about their job as is on top of their game. But that's few and far between...

Bricked captivate
ok so i was running a devil kernel on jellybean 4.2 and for some strange reason the rom started acting funny and gave me a message saying i had to type in a password ti decrpyt storage even though i have no passwords on my samsung I897. So i decided to flash back to stock and start all over again from scratch using odin one click but in the middle of downloading my phone was disconnected and it gave me the bricked screen shortly after. Now i am unable to do anything on this phone ive tried pushing the volume buttons and taking the battery and sim card out while running odin 3 again trying to force it back into download but so far no progress has been made. If any one can help me it is much apprecitated.
ok...was running cyan6 version right before the newest STABLE ver...then it began...i couldnt dl the newest cyan thru ROM manager..it kept giving me a error saying `download unsuccessful` sooo i Went the backdoor way and dl`d it, loaded it, wipe & install.....and ever since ive had NOTHING but FC`s and constant lock ups, getting suck on the boot screen....Ive pulled the battery over and over ,.........NOW IT WONT EVEN COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE PLEASE HELP
Just perform a clean install through recovery.
BTW: there's something wrong with your keyboard.

While holding volume down, try the power button. Release buttons - does it start? (Should see a white screen with 3 Androids on skateboards).

This morning I woke up and my phone was working fine. I had 2 updates in the market and I hit update all. After that my phone rebooted and it does the Verizon LTE animation and the LG splash screen but it goes into a black screen. While it's in the black screen the phone vibrates and the battery heats up. I tried going into recovery but it did nothing.
Pull the battery fo a few and wait before a reboot?

so you said you went in to recovery and it did nothing? So you couldn't even get recovery to load? and are you stock or rooted with clockworkmod recovery?
I can't even get it into recovery. I hold the volume keys and power buttons and it just does the boot up then black screens.

Just hold down the volume down button, then hold down the power button also. Continue to hold both through the lg splash, then it should be into recovery.

I had the same thing happen to mine 20 days after I got it. I had to have it replaced under the warranty, which means they had to ship it next day air.
I've heard of a few other people with the same problem.
Finally able to get into recovery and wipe data but now phone starts up and its black screen with the status bar across the top. It's acting like it has no home launcher.
Unfortunately you are going to have to get a replacement from VZW. If you are within the 14 day period you can just swap it at the store. otherwise you have to go through the Warranty folks and make sure you have them ship it to you overnight.

Do you have Clockwork installed?
If so, this is an easy fix.
If not, well, it's a little tougher.
The gist of what's happening is easy to find by connecting your phone while it's booting to USB and running "adb logcat" on your desktop.
That will give you the boot logs and the exact reason for what's happening.
If you're running my decrapified ROM, you may want to switch back to the stock ROM. Go to my stock NANDROID thread, download that, put it in the right folder on your SD card, then boot into clockwork and follow the instructions in the stock nandroid thread.
Make sure you clear data also!
No need to call verizon
I tried connecting the phone to the pc and got nothing. computer couldn't even detect it. I called verizon and got the phone swapped under the warranty. First thing I'm doing when I get the phone is putting the recovery on it. Would have made this process much easier.

Yep, having ADB access is a surefire way to get your phone up and running again.
But, just for future reference, LG has a failsafe firmware updater that will always work, no matter what state the phone is in.
It's not super easy to set up, but it will fix a phone no matter how broken the software may be.
There's a thread in the Dev subforum with the files and instructions, but the gist is that it's accessed by holding VOLUP+POWER with usb plugged in, then plugging in the battery.
It's successfully recovered 3 phones so far.
It may not be the easiest way to get the phone back, but it has a 100% success rate
I'm having no luck with my new replacement I got from vzw. I've tried rooting it with S1C using both exploits, I've tried rootwiki's manual method and none of them work for me. Anyone got any tips?

Well... you could always try my "toggle ADB" trick.
Turn usb debugging on, then back off, then on again.
Then follow the rest of the rooting instructions, but skip the whole exploit section.
(Basically, remount /system as rw, push su, chmod su, and push superuser, and install busybox)
Ironically, the phone doesn't actually NEED any exploits at all-- it's pretty unlocked to begin with!
I have/had my nook color rooter (1.4.2) and then the lovely update came by...now, I find I can not power off my nook. I hold the power button for minutes and nothing. I normally would run quick boot, but since root was taken away, I can't even get that to work.
I need to fix this so my wife doesn't yell at me too hard.
Any thoughts/help? Please?

I just tried that again. It didn't work, I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm not sure what being plugged into the wall would have to do with shutting of the nook, but I'm desperate, I'll try anything. I just need it to reboot, I have the crm card installed in the nook. The button used to work. I'm just hoping that when the battery runs down, I'll be able to restart the nook.
Ok, so got the battery run down, managed to get it charged enough to reboot into recovery. Got root back so that much is done. But the power button still won't work.
And I made the mistake of powering it down (quick boot app)
I was able to get it start booting, (got the skull and crossbones Loading screen) but now it is hung there.
Any thoughts? You guys here are usually really good with coming up with something off the wall that works

Yea I do have a bootable recovery SD Card. I re-ran it and still no love with the power button. Can I just use the old old 1.01 image (if I could find it) and take it back to that point?
I can't even to the 8 interrupted resets, because obviously the power button won't work

I think the button is still good. About a month ago I was able to do the interrupted boot process. When I rooted her NC, was when I noticed the button didn't work. Don't know if something with the flash or if I beat the button to death.

From my POV the Physical Button is dead… If you have tried turning off the NC while it was runing on CWM Bootable uSD using the Power Button and it did not turn off then the Button is dead.
Well, at least I have it rooted, and quick boot installed, I also have a CWM sd card in there, so if it happens to bork again, I can just let the battery die and then when it recharges it will power up....
I guess the button is dead, and I've not seen much in the way of instructions on how to repair the button. And out of warranty its probably cheaper to buy a new one than take it in to get repaired, cuz I can't actually get it back to factory state without having the power button to do the factory resets...

There is an app on play store called NookColor Power Button. It is a widget you can configure to do all of the power functions, sleep, power off, reboot, etc. I suggest you get the donate version. I think it is only 99¢. You can configure it for what you need.

Yeah, I saw that one, forgot about it. Thanks. I need to try the free just to make sure it will do what I need it to.
Thanks!
I have had my captivate for 1.5 years and I have never done anything to it. A little while ago it would start to pop up with an error about twlauncher or something like that. That would happen multiple times per day. I held the volume buttons and powered it on to get to the screen that lets me restore. I did that and the problem did not go away. I didnt care though because the phone still worked.
2 weeks ago I turned it on and it would not boot past the initial screen. I can still get into the volume up/down power screen and all of my buttons still work. I tried to reset the phone and it still wont go past the "i896 samsung" screen.
Also my computer will not recognize my phone. It hasnt been recognized in some time.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I am going to get the Note2 when it releases, but I have been reduced to using my caveman Iphone 3g while I wait. That thing is 5 years old and the battery wont last for more than 30 minutes with the screen on.
If factory reset/ wipe data will not do anything to help u get it booted, then u could put it into Download Mode and flash a Stock firmware and that should get ya up and going.
TRusselo has Rogers Stock firmware links...see Post #4 in the Stock Roms stickied thread in the Dev forum.
