Hi.
Anyone tried to improve performance like on the SGS in changeing filesystem?
Also is the hw acceleration possible, adding a line in the biuld.prop file to enable gpu in scrolling etc?
I must say that my lg p500 on cyanogen7 is much snappier, and milestone can be choppy sometimes. I feel also that qualcomm processors have better performance in the system than milestone's TI. Omap.
I know that p500 has more ram, but I feel like someting is wrong in the milestone that slows down a bit. I know that hvga is more than 2x less pixels than wvga, but still, maybe some hacks will help. Lagfix and HW acceleration helps on many android phones from lg, samsung etc.
HW acceleration is enabled by default.
My Milestone is actually very smooooooooooooth..... and snappy!
Yes, unbearable without SuperCharging it, but effing awesome with SuperCharging

Interesting What ROM did you use? and What overclock frequency?
At the moment CM7 at 1100mhz.
But come to think of it, I don't think I need 1100mhz anymore lol
I'm often "underclocking" it to 800mhz without really noticing too much difference.
But the main thing is, any ROM would fly with supercharging
Go on, ask him wat supercharging is!

Us Canadians are awesome! Hehe
Did you see that CM7 final release is out for Milestone? He said he tweaked the memory a bit.
ya I looked.
It looks alot like my v5 gscript in that he put the launcher in it's own spot with priority 2 and same kill threshold.
I put it in the second slot but he put it in the 3rd slot.
He also pushed the big chunk of apps (secondary server) down the list to the 5th slot from the 4th whereas I had moved them up from the 4th to the 3rd.
But he increased the memory limit so that chunk of apps actually start getting killed at 24 mb!
Previously, those apps weren't getting killed until ram got down to 16mb so it's actually a very big change.
So by default, it may actually behave like my Balanced 1 v5 gscript. heh.
The difference is the Heavy Weight App. We both have it in the 4th slot but in CM7 Heavy Weight App is more protected and has more priority than secondary server (the big chunk of apps) whereas I have secondary servers as being more important.
I want to see what apps fall in that heavy weight category before my update
Will the fact that apps get killed at 24MB now instead of 16MB affect the way that you can now bulletproof two apps in this recent update? Because he warns that it is RAM intensive, but what does it do to the apps in the other slots?
It just means if you're bulletproofing an app, another app that you're not paying attention to will get killed instead of the one you want to keep running. But it would bounce back anyway and something else would get killed.
They just play musical chairs and take turns updating once in awhile.
btw, I adjusted the minfree on my phone and gave heavy weight it's own slot but there is no apps in that spot at all
I run stuff and let it sit and keep refreshing but I never see a heavyweight.

You are right! What on earth is SuperCharging???
I googled throug XDA and i cant find a clear meaning of SuperCharging
Yea, supercharge tweaks are great. So maybe changeing the filesystem? Some people said that it wont do any boost, but maybe its worth trying.
I disabled dsi bug workaround and phone is flying on adw ex. I definitely need supercharge script as phone lags sometimes in different apps after some time.
And swap would be nice on our stones, but nobody knows how to do it by kernel module.
Try the super test script on page 38 of my thread.
My next update will be based on that with different minfree values

Any ideas on how to improve 3D performance on the G1? I am talking about changing things in the kernel/firmware to make 3D games run a little smoother. My favorite game on android is raging thunder 2, and it runs fine for the most part until more then one car gets on the screen. At that point it starts to lag alot. I know it was designed for faster hardware but with some mods we can make it better.
My setup:
CM based 2.6.34 kernel with BFS
Cyanogen 5.0.8 test4
No sound
All tasks killed before the game starts.
Overclocked at 691 min/max (Universal overclock, and always plugged in)
Any ideas?
One, stop killing tasks.
I'm curious if there's a way to assign more RAM to 3d. Hence a... reverse RAM hack?

I use the running services section under settings to kill tasks. I haven't used a separate app taskiller since my donut days. Now the reverse RAM hack seems like a good idea, but wouldn't general phone performance suffer because of that?
Ah. Smart man on the killing tasks then.
Hmm... Probably? I usually go with about 18 free... never under 10... But that's ME. Maybe giving it 5mb more? That's a ~50% increase of the original 10.7MB reserved for it. The question here is how? I'm sure it can't be too hard.
the funny thing is dude, you dont mean to boost ur GPU as everything is integrated. when it comes to lag u'd usually resort to OCing the processor. i normally stick to RT1. RT2's requirements are 700Mhz and I dont know if i wanna put ma poor G1 through that - i have a hard enough time trying to get speedforge to work propperly

How could I have forgotten about overclock?!?! I'm one of the lucky ones my phone will boot at up to 710 Mhz for a good 30 seconds and I'm perfectly stable at around 652 Mhz. RT1 runs a lot smoother but it has a lot worse graphics. RT2 actually runs fairly well most of the time with the sound off when clocked at 528 so I dunno.
Yeah so I played with overclock some and I'm getting amazing results. When playing 3D games I've got my cpu clocked at 710 max/min and I am getting absolutely no slowdowns. My neocore benchmark is at 30.2 fps now, way higher then stock cyanogen's 22.5 ish scores. I haven't played with overclock since the universal overclock first came out and now my phone seems to be a lot more stable at higher frequencies then it was before. It's gonna kill my battery, but I'll just play with the phone plugged in lol. Problem is solved, but I'm still open to any 3D improving suggestions.
EDIT:I still get a few random reboots, specially if the phone has been idle, but performance is amazing.
EDIT2: I'm gonna have to eat my words....710max/min might have been too aggressive. Sometimes it reboots completely, sometimes it just exits out of the game. Until I posted on here I was having amazing results but a slower clock is more reasonable...I'll go with 691 max/min=p
might be a stupid question in general but is any developing heading towards steering up the ****ty smoothness in the galaxy s in general?
feels like im running 5 fps at some points, so i was kinda wondering..
ofc iops is is crap aswell but i dont really mind ****ty accesstimes as long as the smoothness is preserved, so~
can anything be done about this or do i throw this piece of .."phone" under my 70ton excavator? ;(
//regards azure
READ THE FORUM!
There are plenty of fixes.
@Mods: Close this thread asap!
sadly none of em fixes the smoothness, they just boast higher io rate not fps >_<
im not sure if you know what the difference between "rendered frames per sec" is vs "reads/writes from an sdchip" causing i/o lag
but in short it means theres 2 types of "lags" one of them being addressed atm, and sadly its not the fps one.
or are my demands too high to request from the phone? >_<
I'm not really sure what exactly you're referring to when you say "smoothness", but try using a different launcher (I'd recommend LauncherPro). LauncherPro has always felt "smoother" to me!
yes, a good example of smoothness on 2.1. whats worse is that on the new firmwares it constantly dips when it goes beneath 22mb cache causing a frameratedrop, and due to the galaxy s being hampered with vsync w/o the fps to back the refreshrate up it stutters i.e gets halved fps for a short amount of time, might just be a sec or 2 but when its constantly there it starts to grow out as a nail in the eye ;(
and my highest wish ofc is to be able to use the tw appdrawer style which isnt possible with anything else today ;(
although thank you very mucho for the tip and im open for any other suggestions aswell, gonna try to get a hold of the driverfile in the meantime
people are trying to tell you the problem is not in the video, which is true.
you are experiencing the lag, that many are complaining about.
the system lags when you've got too many apps running or iddling in the background.
you can either install the various lag fixes people have developed
or you can simply install a good task manager + auto run killer and control which apps to allow in memory, and which should be closed when not in use.
well quite frankly i dont even need a single app installed or opened to see it, just freshly install any 2.2 fw and pinch, there you have it, open up the apppreviews in the same manner, once again, even if it opens up faster with any lagfix (ill hand you that much atleast since ive tried all availible fw's and lagfixes, kernels you name it) it still looks at the very least as its frameskipping like an old NES >_<
if that is the case, it might be a defective screen/video in your unit.
might want to consider having it exchanged..
I can count at most roughly 5 people that have mentioned something similar to what you found.
Personally i'm still on stock 2.1 and i do not see those flame skipping you have described.
do you have any App specifically where to reproduce this?
i play 3D games and run all kind of apps in my SGS and it've yet to see a skipped frame
aye i do too and i havent noticed anything quite as severe as the homescreen other when the framerate drops from vsync 1:1 to 2:1 or even 4:1 ( clearly visible in quadrant bench when its up on 56 its smooth and when it drops to 30 its choppy) ideally id just wanna rid myself of it since i doubt ill have to worry about screentearing on an sgx540 lol and the biggest hickup would be somewhat soothened since i imagine the real frame drop is less than 50%, anyways thx for the feedback, gonna have it turned in for a check and stop using the ip4 >_<

Hi
Everybody talk about changing the VM heap value, but... what is the difference after changing it? What about increase its value? And decrease it?
On the CM7 thread adamz667 post this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15065093&postcount=4569
Anyone can confirm that?
Thanks
Increasing cm heap means that apps can use more memory which makes them run faster but then since tbey use up more mem u will have less free memory.
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
Here you got some definition:
VM Heap Size
The heap is an area of dynamic memory allocated to programs. With a larger heap size, there is more memory for the program and the garbage collector can run more efficiently. Therefore, it is possible to get better performance by setting a larger VM heap size.
However, if you set it too high, you can run out of free memory which can trigger swapping which will degrade performance. Therefore the VM setting is a trade-off.
The optimal value will depend on the RAM on the device as well as the programs and usage patterns, therefore the optimal setting can often only be determined by the user experimentally.
Default value: varies between devices

I have tested all of them today and the best results was with 16mb.
How I was testing it?
Shadow Guardian HD is a very heavy game for MM's ram memory. So I've tested every vm heap size on one and the same level of SGHD, with the same run environment and game was most playable on 16mb (no freezes, reboots, no returns to home screen).
Really 16mb. Which rom? And how far did you get in the game?

I am using CM7rc10 (14.06.2011) I am now in 4th episode (level?) - Medusa Sanctuary.
That is very very interesting. I'm gonna have to give cm7 another chance. Maybe rc10 is a lot better than rc4 (last cm7 I tried)

i also have good performance with 16m tried most settings from extremely large to extremely small...
also png optimized most apps again and again... (which decreased the size of the apps by almost 10mb again - quite sure that it does not make much of a difference)
don't have any app locked in memory and only one homescreen with adw ex without widgets...
dunno till now i have not experienced any issues with lost sms or phone calls...
but i'm aware of that it could happen with my settings so it needs more testing, jit turned off etc. phone works like a charm since i switched from froyomod a week ago or so.

Are you sure u tried 16 mb. Because I just tried shadow guardian on cm7 rc10 with ur settings and zepplinrox supercharger on balance and tbh it was rather language at times

I've tried jit off and VM heat on 16MB but not get any result.
The launcher was freezing 3 or 4 times, and all games get a minimal improve: 3 seconds more until FC.
I'm testing with: Asphalt 6 and Brothers In Arms 2 (Gameloft games) and Age of Wind v2.2. All versions for MM, with people that play them on stock rom.

well as i said i do not use that memory intensive apps.
(i think my biggest apps are maps and the browser, and the browser barely goes beyond 30mb, so 2 vm's with 16mb, instead of 2 with 24. but most apps stay below 10mb so i think for my use it is a good solution)
also i debloated the rom massively and replaced most system apps with smaller ones.
cm7 performs very well with this settings, at least for me. (no redraws, no lags in ui no freezes etc...)
like i said i don't use games on my stone
edit: only genie news & weather app reloads often but i think it simply has a high priority.

And 20mb with balanced 3 supercharger works great. But not so well on 16mb

I had tried 16mb weeks ago when somebody suggested it.
That lasted about 5 minutes.
Scrolling between adw screens was brutally choppy.
Swipe finger, wait, look at watch, then bam - the screen suddenly decides to quickly jump to the next screen...

I've got the same with 12mb vm heap. But when I use 16mb everything works fine on CM7 and HO!NO! CM7. Maybe it depends on rom/apps you use and your own configuration.
I guess.
But I'm used to fast, smooth and lots of free ram no matter what rom I'm using

yeah 12mb is to small... experienced some errors with it too.
i have to say that for me everyhing between 16 and 32 mb seems to do not do much of a difference, but with 32mb my system uses some more RAM right after boot.
after a while it usally uses less (around 80-90mb sometimes less, sometimes more) so i normally have around 60mb free RAM, which seems to be enough.
i'm out of this discussion for now, but i have to say that i rly think ur VM Heap settings should match the apps u use.
so just try different settings.
@Zeppe
yay never experienced that, but i use only one Homescreen anyway. and ADWEX is rly memory friendly : )

Today, a friend, called me to setup a new android phone for his wife. It was the cheap, very cheap, Alcatel Onetouch 908.
I transfered contacts, calendar events, configured emails and installed some apps from the market. The phone felt speedy, to be exact much more speedy than my Galaxy S and that started to bother me. What bothered me more was my friend, who has a Galaxy S II device. He told me out of the blue that alcatel felt speedier than his S II. I finished and 'take it for a walk'. I started sequently loading apps (browser, gmail, contants, market and talk) and then multitasked between them. The initial loading was almost immediate and, to my suprise, mutitasking was instant. My Galaxy felt like a second class device, my world shuttered... almost
I left my friend and I was angry, very angry. How could that be? I've tried numerous roms, customs and stock ones, with lagfixes enabled or disabled but, truth to be told, all of them felt like rubbish compared to an alcatel onet... I don't want to tell the evil's name!
Now, I am still angry but not with Alcatel,.. with Samsung! Am I wrong? What are your thoughts? Does anyone have an answer? Was just my imagination?
I don't suppose you have tried running 3D games on it?
knowledge is Power. Guard it well.
I did and it was fantastic... just kidding
No I didn't. But now you've said it, just for the laughs, next time I will be around, I'll try angry birds... if possible (although not a 3D game... I think)!
Ugliest thing ever seen on Internet
aaaaaaaaawwwwwwww, this is uglyyyyy, what an ugly phone, even if it had the speed of light, or even faster, the speed of thought or even much faster than those the speed of GOD, I would take the SGS anytime.
btw, try quadrant too, see if you get some noticable scores with it, if it's really worth your time, but if it was me, I wouldn't even set it up for a girl friend, let alone a friends girl.
well its the same story again u see a new android phone unused or if even used then used very very lightly(just calls, sms, have 10-25 apps. and all that) ! man any android pgone newly bought and used lightly can be very fast! i saw my friends galaxy ace on 2.2 bpught just 3 days ago and very lightly uaed and it was working like a lightning! if you want to see your phone this fast then flash stock jvs and you'll face lightning but as soon you get some apps in and start using it heavily youll start facing lags! download 100 apps. and do heavy multitasking on that alcatel for a week or so and youll start hating it and will throw it into a dustbin!

You should try CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) out of the box (no apps/games installed).
It's just fast - the speed is nearly amazing. Same thing with MIUI.
And just forget stock-ROMs. You won't want to use them after you have tried an AOSP-ROM (CM7 or MIUI).

Memory Management
The thing about multitasking is that is related mainly with memory and memory management. I think it's true, if enough free memory exists any os will keep more tasks active and multitask between them will be instant...
But android keeps loading and unloading apps, in the background, which I almost never use but consume memory.
Skype is the perfect example. When i do not need it, I am signing off skype and go straight back to my home screen... Of course, as we all know, skype persists and never exits. It's just sits there consuming memory and doing nothing. If I try to kill it, android will happily and immediately reload it. The only way really kill it, is to uninstall it, but is this a solution?
One more example? The facebook app or the friencaster app. Even if I disable every automatic refresh or log off from facebook some part of them will keep running and like skype I cannot kill it.
The essence of all this is that: I own a phone with 512 mb of ram assisted with a powerful, 1 GHz, CPU, much - much more than an alcatel OT 908 and this doesn't show. Maybe is the 100+ apps I've installed in my phone, maybe is android, maybe is a bug, maybe it's me whining. Whatever is it... it's wrong and yes, I'm starting feeling angry, very angry with... Google and Samsung

Looking at the specs for the OneTouch, I am not surprised it is fast.
The 600mhz chip it is using is quite overpowered for what is effectively a featurephone. It is also supporting a much smaller, less advanced screen (256K colors, TFT) which frees up a LOT of cpu cycles for basic functions. This kind of speed while just being a phone is why feature phones aren't as dead as people keep assuming.
It is also running Froyo, which was made for this kind of phone and likely races on it, without having to worry about the sort of strains a Galaxy class smartphone puts on an OS.
Remember, if you install a slimmed down OS on a custom designed modern laptop, and ONLY install a handful of programs no doubt it will break speed records. However, to judge it against a fully loaded, professional install is like comparing apples and oranges.

alcatel ot 908 runs NFS shift, NOVA, Gangstar, BIA2, Sandstorm, Sims3, Rackless Racing, GuerillaBob, dead space....runs 99% hd games that don't requires armv7 or 2.3
it's way better then most off QVGA android and all msm7201 and msm7225.... (hvga and qvga)
for that money...
Well I have to say.
Just bought this second hand SGS to test and compare with my Desire HD.
If I can be honest. Both have the same clock freq and specs seems the same, but the DHD (lets call it that way) is alot faster than the SGS.
I am amazed how long it takes to just open the camera. On the DHD the camera app opens in half a second I think.
Then sometimes you click on something and nothing happens making you think that you didn't click anything at all. On the DHD opening anything is instant.
I'm running Darky 10.22 so if someone knows if I need to change something to make this a faster thing please let me know.
the only advantage of the desire hd and the alcatel ot 908 (i own one of these and a desire S, very similar to the hd hardware-wise) is that out-o-the-box, they're configured almost perfectly for their respective OS version and hardware.. Samsung makes some very tough and cutting-edge hardware, but they've always been lagging behind software-wise (and still are to some extent, i know what i'm talking about here too : my main device is a note2 N7100 and my dev/test device is my old -but almost unbreakable even when I'm the one who opens it up to solder or repair sthg in it- galaxy s2 i9100... None of those were left "stock", they're both fitted with CM10-derivated ROMs (most of the time a ParanoidAndroid or some derivate), heavily customized and "after-market" optimized (thanks to all the good tips&tweaks found here at XDA ^^) just to remedy those problems.. Never for my life would I leave one of these stock (I run a stock firmware on a dual-boot on the SGS2, but that's only for entering USSD codes, as these usually won't work on CM7/9/10 ROMs)... And yet, they're both way better when they're still "stock" than the Wave 1 was, with his powerful 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, but a puny 512Mb RAM -shared with the OS/CPU and GPU at that, leaving a mere 312Mb -give or take- to the poor user.. Far too low for its memory-hungry Bada OS,even in its latest and last 2.X versions.. I couldn't even open a second page in its Dolphin browser before it started shutting down background apps and closing widgets.. :s).

You can almost guarantee that a 1GB model will be better. The Optimus 2X does struggle with it's 512 mb, because 128mb is attributed to the GPU. Lukily, some kernels, like IronKrnl free some of that memory up and give it back to the CPU, but it's still losing 80mb.
Also, it's worth noting that, if you want to run ICS, if you look at the phones out that have 1gb of ram, you'll see they're all actually better phones- especially what Samsung make.
So, while the O2X is a cheap dual-core device. The best experience will come with something with 1gb of RAM, as it's much more likely to also get ICS. (Due in part because most 1gb phones have already had an announcement, and for it to be soon)
ICS is very hungry in memory. On my Asus Tablet running official, my 1GB RAM is fully used, as usual in Linux but at a higher level than in GB.
To run ICS correctly on O2X, you must use IronKrnl, the 48mb ramhack version is correct (means it steals 48MB to GPU, leaving only 80MB to it), and modifying memory killer values to a sort of aggressive profile.
Yea right, so this is why I had less free memory on GB. And now I have CM kernel on ICS. I doubt you actually tried CM9 alpha on O2X if you are talking crap like this about performance.

The browser in ICS works better even though we have 512MB. It always returned to where I had left. 512 and less is enough for full desktop environments on PC even.

See my sig and stop arguing. I run CM9 since first day Ricardo published SK0, and now running SK2 with latest Ironkrnl. Setiron himself admitted on Google+that ICS is a memory eater.
Dont know how much free memory we're talking about here but I'm on SK2 with original CM9 kernel. Using Adv.Task Killer from time to time and I always have around 200-240 Mb free memory. Just sharing my experience
Running CM9 aswell and its sooooo smooth, faster than any rom ive tried
OK, so what happens when you want to run Tegra games? (like Dungeon Defenders for example). A shame you cannot dynamically set the ram hack :-(

That's the real question... Free memory when phone is idle means nothing. Plus you have to consider the lowmemkiller values you have set, I personnally use aggressive values: 16 24 32 90 100 110 to free the most possible memory.
Many users report freezes with games that run perfectly on GB. The problem or ramhack is choosing the right value for gaming, it seems 48mb version is the best compromise. A 'on the fly' feature was not planned for the moment by Setiron in one of his G+ posts.

That has no direct link with OP. But it's true it's smooth lol.

It does. In low memory situations ICS seems to keep running better and smoother compared to GB. If you get under 40mb free on GB everythings gets very slow, with ICS it seems to handle it a bit more elegantly from a user experience.
Please don't think I'm pesimistic here, I'm just going off the comments: Given that OEM releases tend to be bloated and memory wasteful, it's not looking great for an LG ICS release that is 'fully' working. If they pull it off and allow tegra games to run, then I'll be impressed
the official release from LG should be more efficient, and once you remove bloatwares, it should be quite a charm
Hi,
The Google Nexus S also has only 512Mb, and a certain amount of those allocated to GPU (though I don't remember how many), and ICS works like a charm on it... So I think it shouldn't be a problem on our O2X! :-D

It has the same config (128 for the GPU, 384 of available RAM) and works really fine.
Obviously a full gigabyte would be awesome.
Cheers!
Im typing using my optimus one running icss.
NOTE: my phone can only be over clocked till 729mhz.
So for our 2x it will be no prob.
Just need propriety files.
